"Okay, Phil. We got a very important master class video that needs cuts and editing. We expect it to inspire thousands with his words of genuine creativity." "Anything special you want me to do with it?" "Just make sure to lower the master volume and pan EVERYTHING left."
"Also, just in case the audience forget who they are watching, put on the name card for the only two people talking in 53min EVERY time you cut to the other one"
That's still part of a comedy master class, everything has to do with everything, specially in the audiovisual stuffs, you may think editing as a tool just for video, but you can "edit" your stand up set by knowing how to get a better pace and how to tell a story for example
I love the content and insight from Dan, but the technical issues really bring me down on this. How does a world media festival publish a video with audio only working on one mono channel, with editing and camera work that cuts away from the relevant subject?
This happens with most panels like this and whilst I don't know enough to be sure about it I think it's because recording the panel isn't the main job of whoever is doing it. Basically they're manning the sound booth and once in a while go 'oh yeah I'm supposed to do that too'
I didn't want to be the first one to mention the weird "Cameraman has a crush" segment of the video--but I'm glad I didn't have to go too far to find it. I do not understand what's happening here unless Dan specifically said, "It would be funny to zoom in on someone for no reason, just to see the youtube comments." I guess it was technically a kind of pica-boo...
Gives a masterclass on comedy and its place within a larger societal framework. Q & A is mostly questions from Community fans asking about Community Also, so funny that most of the comments are jokes about the awful editing. It actually created a wave of comedy, entirely by accident.

Completely agree. For that bad editing, and the reason of it only being uploaded in the left channel stereo, I had to downvote. Big missed opportunity. Such carelessness some of these organizations have in uploading videos.
I wish we could actually see the slides as well. But nonetheless, fantastic speech. Good on the guy for being funny. Edit: oh wait, never mind, we do end up seeing the slides. i spoke prematurely.
Dan Harmon was successfully Incepted! "Elephants" (if I remember correctly) was exactly the same example JGL character uses to define "Inception" to Saito at the beginning of Inception...if memory serves. And Yes, pun intended.
You know, it's weird, sometimes answers come to you in the strangest form... thank you for touching on so many topics I am handling as a creative person.
+Ryan Harrison it's interlacing, a video artifact produced by the compression of a video. Instead of a progressive frame rate (one image at a time) the images are interlaced (one line at a time). It's disgusting. I hate it too.
Oh... at first I thought you meant that he lingered way too much with the camcorder on the strangers in the audience, not that you were talking about the guy snapping photos. What is "creepy" about that though?
I can't help but hang off of every word that he says; Im not hooked on community or rick and morty, but i seemed to be hooked on this character known as Dan Harmon himself.
when your mind is operating in 5 dimensions you sometimes forget at any given moment if you look like shit and to remember to wonder if you should care has thirteen pre-requisite considerations. so they both are slovenly fats
9:45 I'm willing to bet the camera operator and director/board operator are talking about the girl in the middle of the frame. What other explanation can there be for such a long moment spent on some random in the crowd while the keynote speaker is in the middle of a joke that clearly has a visual component to it.
Manny Peters I think they wanted a shot of someone laughing as a secondary “cut to” splice in. But then for some reason, used their coverage shot for way too long.
if youre wondering why its not perfectly curated to your viewing needs thats because we are lucky they even filmed it. this wasnt for us it was for a very serious and ambitious group of professionals.
For those of you who are extremely annoyed by the audio, if you download the video onto your computer and drop the audio into an audio editing program, all you have to do is convert the audio from stereo to mono and it will fix it. Enjoy!
"Saw game premise material" I wrote this awhile ago and found it jigsaw instead shows his captured victims him doing stand up on stage, and he would start with something like I want to tell a joke...I was in my wheelchair and my wife was next to me some asshole ran into the building while we were leaving and slammed the door into her pregnant self causing a miscarriage *stares into camera intensely* you have 60 seconds. victims are freaking out trying to break out and are mostly like wtf was that do you know him I don't even think he's on Netflix why did we watch that we have to break out. this happens over and over with jigsaw doing more sets of open mics and the only people that survive are the ones who laugh. they have a mechanism attached to their diaphram chained their limbs to the walls and if the machine detects laughter from shaking and has to hear the sound of it they will be let go and become jigsaw's opener
Diversity requires more effort on the part of leadership which is why buy in at the top is so important. You want a diverse writers room then you need to work harder to get it. Period. That's how the system is currently setup.
Weird, how many commenters seem to have never seen a taped conference talk. What moron is running around telling people UA-cam is a place for studio quality cinematic presentation? The sound sucks and the edit is rough. You'll survive. We'll get through this tragedy together.
As much as the camera should have been on Dan, I'm at least glad it was her and not some other random person in the audience. She was laughing all the time and seemed engaged. A1 audience member.
amazing presentation that is interesting to many more people than those that are looking for a career in comedy. however it seems like everyone who was part of the production of this video (except harmon ofc) needs to get a fucking clue lol... what the fuck is up with the camera work??? why the fuck is the audio only on one mono channel??? i mean the Banff is not exactly a small organization XD
wtf is wrong with this camera man. It's bad from the outset, but what the hell happens at 9:10? Focusing on a table for a minute then zooming in on a single woman. I seriously think this guy is stalking her
She's aware of how mic's work. He was kinda slapping on the arms of the chair and she was tryna make sure people didn't hear loud pops. professionalism and knowing her craft. That was the name of that move.
"Okay, Phil. We got a very important master class video that needs cuts and editing. We expect it to inspire thousands with his words of genuine creativity."
"Anything special you want me to do with it?"
"Just make sure to lower the master volume and pan EVERYTHING left."
Dakota Hayes "Hey Phil if you can also pan to those focus shots on the asian chick, WE WOULD LOVE THAT"
“Including the audio?”
“Go nuts.”
"Also, make sure we almost never show the slides Dan is referring to. Powerpoint is a theatre of the mind!"
"Also, just in case the audience forget who they are watching, put on the name card for the only two people talking in 53min EVERY time you cut to the other one"
You came here for a Comedy Master Class and you left thinking about the importance of good editing.
That's still part of a comedy master class, everything has to do with everything, specially in the audiovisual stuffs, you may think editing as a tool just for video, but you can "edit" your stand up set by knowing how to get a better pace and how to tell a story for example
This video is more about visual comedy, because essentially hes a producer/writer. Not a stand up comedian
So what you're saying is not only did we learn comedy but also how to edit.
for fucking real
Dan Harmon has a penis BITCH
I love the content and insight from Dan, but the technical issues really bring me down on this.
How does a world media festival publish a video with audio only working on one mono channel, with editing and camera work that cuts away from the relevant subject?
9:06 This feels creepy too.
I had the same feelings. Still a great presentation tho.
This happens with most panels like this and whilst I don't know enough to be sure about it I think it's because recording the panel isn't the main job of whoever is doing it. Basically they're manning the sound booth and once in a while go 'oh yeah I'm supposed to do that too'

He is fantastic, he knows the business and were it is going. He is a writer, you can see it in how he is on stage. I feel I learned a lot from.

me: I wonder if we can see that girl closer
cameraperson: yes
Totally missed Dan playing peek-a-boo too

good thing trump is funny!

press "Audio" on the left menu
Turn on mono audio

God damn would it have been perfect if instead of the generic suit guy, he had a picture of Jeff Davis instead.
Great audio! Great Editing!
Great sarcasm
@@talytasbarcelos great meta comment
@@WYalmicW I love a good meta comment until someone does something they’d never do on meta comments like mentioning it’s a meta comment
There, it's gone
Awesome stuff! Dan Harmon is fantastic.
At around 9:50 the camera becomes fixated upon the girl for a while.
Camera guy's ex girlfriend.
right??? i was like 'who is this woman? is she supposed to be important? what's going on?'
Blame the editor for holding on her for so long.
Kyle Aman 'as it should' lmao creep
that was very uncomfortable
"Yeah? Eh.. Alright" Is exactly how I'd respond onstage to praise by a peer.
Who edited this footage, it's awful. Great workshop, but they cut away from a bunch of stuff you want to see.
+Gabe Isko they got the awards show guy. its funny they actually cut a funny lecture to make it less funny.
And the sound is way too low
+Matt Orfalea And mono.
lol crank it up then? volume is not terribly low...
Completely agree. For that bad editing, and the reason of it only being uploaded in the left channel stereo, I had to downvote. Big missed opportunity. Such carelessness some of these organizations have in uploading videos.
Mono audio? Why only coming through the left headphone?
I wish we could actually see the slides as well. But nonetheless, fantastic speech. Good on the guy for being funny.

Man, parts of this talk really land differently listening in 2019, now that we know what we know about Mr Ed.
What do we know about Mr. Ed?
I literally thought that something happened to my right earphone but tyen the commment section saved me
The girl interviewing him was his girlfriend at the time who he married that year and then divorced the year after
I might be reaching but the "don't do that" kind of made me expect such a situation
@@duncandl910 when did they say that?
The tremendously funny Erin McGathy.

Whats with the creepy camera man from 9:05-10:05?

why is my life a tragedy? who stole all my stuff before I was born? im obsessed with harmon, louis ck, tarantino and jordan peele

First Question: Okay. So, your show’s cancelled now.........
Me: Great start.
Audio is in Mono (left speaker)
:(
+Joe-Lou That's not what mono means. It's actually in stereo with the right channel completely fucked.
Open VLC -> Open Network Stream
Audio -> Stereo Mode -> Left

Love Dan awkwardly denying that handshake at the beginning.
For a media festival this audio is pretty bad.
9:45 I'm willing to bet the camera operator and director/board operator are talking about the girl in the middle of the frame. Community needs a Die Hard episode!
***** ??? Wait do you think the paintball episode counts as a Die Hard episode?
***** As a huge fan of the Die Hard franchise, I say nay to that classification
Aaron VargasNV Jeff visiting the Dean in paintball 1 was pretty much shot for shot the final showdown with Hans
***** Have any of you guys seen Die Hard? Just curious
my left ear enjoys the audio
why is this sooooo quiet? volume at 100% and it's sooooo quiet.
Great stuff. The camera work at the start is a bit ... well... :P
When the camer doesnt show anything, make sure your audio is not in left channel only pls.
9:40 is s creepy, the camera just gets locked onto to her for like 5 minutes 😂
I love that you had 50% women on your staff
8:59 Darn Harmon; genius. =]
I just don't understand dislikes anymore
Great interview questions!
The sound is SOOO low!!

I have the exact sweater he's wearing in this. This isn't important. But It's interesting to me.
I feel Dan on Syd Field. It's an intensely badly written book, but at least it's something that gets you somewhere.
Was the person manning the camera even looking at what they were shooting?
The Banff World MEDIA Festival really skimped on the cam ops, TD, and audio, huh?
That Rosanne and Cosby references at 13:20 didn't aged well
What is the title of the Syd Fields book he's talking about?
Are my headphones broken? Two tracks of audio bro.
