    The key to teaching children to be bilingual, is to speak mandarin at home, and let children pick up English by watching videos and in school. The entire generation's parents did it all wrong. That's why sg is having this problem now.

    • @91838072
      @91838072 3 роки тому +7

      Thats simply not possible because Mandarin is not the actual mother tongue of the Chinese here in Singapore. Majority of Singaporean Chinese’s grandparents also don’t speak Mandarin as a mother tongue. Many grandparent’s mother tongue are Hokkien, Teochew or Cantonese.
      Thus, the kids parents grew up with Mandarin being just another language to be learnt like English. However, English is still useful as Singapore’s Father Tongue.

    • @91838072
      @91838072 3 роки тому +7

      Rather than Mother Tongue, Mandarin to the Chinese is more like their step mother tongue.

    • @RavenCloudNine

      @@91838072 it doesn't matter what Mandarin should be classified under. The point I'm making, is the way to most efficiently nurture children to be bilingual, under Singapore context. And it's totally possible. It's been proven to work very well because almost everyone in their 30s and 40s now are effectively bilingual, and that's how we learnt the languages. No doubt some still use "broken" english. But that's because 20 to 30 years ago, we did not have enough exposure to proper english as children. Which isn't the case now.

    • @icyboy771z

      @@RavenCloudNine It's easier to speak English cause too many technical words we use English anyway and will get a huh? If we use pure Chinese.

    Its not surprising that many people did poorly though, unless they are chinese speaking at home, after secondary school, some don’t even use it anymore. Imagine someone comes up to you are test you on secondary school biology, I doubt many people would remember the content as well. Same with any knowledge, if you don’t use it, you will lose it, and since singapore society current does not require the use of their mother tongue since we have a common language (english) thats why most people forgot about their mother tongue, just like any other subject they learnt in school

    Can people stop shaming people for having bad Mandarin, when it is not even the Mother Tongue of the Chinese here. It a Step-Mother Tongue that is forced upon the Chinese here by the government. Many older generations also either can’t speak Mandarin nor see it as their Mother Tongue.
    Point is people will never forget their Mother Tongue, no matter how hard they try. If they do forget them then it’s probably not their mother tongue. Singaporean Chinese will never swear Gan Ni Niang or Ni Ma, but will also sweat KNN or CB.

      Howard Zheng it's embarrassing because their english isn't good either nor their mother tongues so they're not good in any language
      you're also assuming that all HK people are native cantonese speakers which isn't always true, although it is the majority. and also, you're saying that all the singaporeans are not native mandarin speakers, which while some of them may not be, most singaporeans are native mandarin speakers

How are you comparing to HongKi when their nation language is cantonese? they basically grew up speaking canto and live speaking ONLY canto in their country? how in the world will you compare singaporeans to them when singaporeans dont even speak dialect and is not good with their english too. @@91838072 Cantonese has always been the language the Hong Kongers are brought up in. Even the way they write are similar to the way Cantonese is pronounced(using Traditional Chinese script). On the other hand, Mandarin has always been one of Singapore main languages. You go to Malaysia, regardless of you ancestors' homeland(Guangdong, Chaouzhou, Fujian, Fuzhou, etc.), they still learn how to speak Mandarin fluently.

      Alamak in Singlish came from Malay, Alamak, which ultimately came from the contraction of Alah Mak (same meaning, an exclamation). I don't think it came from Allah Ma'ak.
