I always wondered if Alocasia can be propagated by stem propagation....so I just did it! For science 🤓. What are your experiences with Alocasia props? In my opinion I prefer the seperation of corms. It's much faster and less stressful 😅😅
I didn't even know that this was possible with alocasias (so thanks!!) and was similarly unhappy with my leggy Frydek.. I started airlayering now and I'm very excited to be chopping it soon 😇
I've propagated many Alocasia from trunk or stem cuttings over the years. Even large form Alocasia, Colocasia, and Xanthosoma can be propagated this way. All produce cormels, or cormlets. But there are species that grow pups off the tuber or trunk instead, and they can also be cut off and started, even without roots of their own, if they have their own tuber, even if it's only a small portion.
But that's not a stem dear. Alocasias stems are tubers. The part there that looks like the stem of the frydek which is very stiff it is indeed part of the rhyzome that's why you were able to get roots. Otherwise the cutting would die.
Thaaaank you Ola! I love making these longer term projects. At first it's hard to delay the instant gratification of a one day shoot. In the end I am way more proud of those well documented projects though😊. The Frydek baby is my pride & joy 🥰 it's so fricking cute!
Your words are much appreciated Janine, even though I have to practice a lot of patience with these projects, the outcomes are always the most rewarding 😁. Glad you liked it 💚
Can i just say how much I appreciate shooting your video's over a longer period of time? It really shows in the quality, and makes it so useful! Also I stem propagated my Alocasia cucullata once. Took forever for the remaining stem to sprout, but it did 'branch' out into two stems 😊 hopefully your frydek does too!
It's so much more rewarding to document something over time, I agree. I have to practice a lot of patience though 😅. My motherplants also took really long to sprout but I experienced the same thing as you did. more branches with new healthy growth 👌😁 My vriegated Frydek hasn't really branched out from the stem but started to grow 4 corms from it's base 😅 I'm not even mad.
@@LeafyLuster How can we ever be mad at our plant babies 😁 Interesting though! The stem is obviously still functioning, hopefully it will push out some branches too over time!🤞
Hahaha, yeah I like that nickname 😅. I don't know why but the curiosity always wins. I didn't have to necessarily cut the Micholitziana but I just wanted to see what happens. It is still so wild to me that plants can survice being chopped up like that and still keep coming back to life 💚🌿
oooo a 2-month video! Very nice I don't know why I have so many gorgeous plants, but this alocasia is one of my favourites in my collection (and strangely, the one that has given me the most grief!). Thanks for your great video. I love your videos x
Hihi, honestly I don't know why it's always done so well. Maybe because I already got it as a mature plant. It's just chilling in my living room and get's no special care at all. I struggle most with my alocasia polly, I just can't get it to grow (not even in a propbox 😅). Thank you for the sweet words Daniel, see u in the next one 💚😊
This video is incredible!! Thank you so much for putting this together and capturing all this to share with us. I've just learned so much! So much appreciation. :)
I'm so happy you uploaded a new video, I binged all of them over the past 2 weeks. Such a good plant to go get info from, because my corms began to grow and are now both just done with the 2nd leaf. 🥰 I literally can not wait to be able to harvest a corms.
Hahhahaa, glad you like all of them! Love that💚. I swear repotting Alocasia is so much fun, cause it's a treasure hunt every time 😁. Hope you get to collect some soon 🤞 Greetings from Germany.
I actually did this with one of my spiderplants. Turns out you can propagate Spiderplants through stem cuttings, they just have to be pretty big and mature to do get it to work. Plus, you get a l o t of leaf loss when you do it. So yeahhh
Good to know! Maybe it's a good idea for the top cutting as well. It would definitely take a lot of pon to pot such a big plant in semi hydro 😅 I recently put one of my Alocasia Frydek in pon as well :)
I'm glad you liked it. Don't worry, I like that description of me a lot actually 😁 didn't think I would come across like that, for me it sounds like i come across as fairly professional 🤓 love that. Thank you for the kind words Florance, see u in the next one!
Hi Sam, sorry for the late reply. I am a little overwhelmed by all of the comments recently 😅. I'm so happy to hear you enjoy your time here so much. If you ever have any wishes or ideas for videos, let me know. See you in the next video 💚
This is great! I love that you take so much time and put so much effort into making videoes, it really shows in good quality🤩 I just bought my first frydek a few days ago, really excited for propagations!
Awwww thank you so much Frida 💚! Sorry for the late reply, I hope your Frydek is doing well 😱 how exciting! I'm glad you enjoy the videos and appreciate the way I make them. 🥰 See u soon.

Well at first i was like this video is WAY to long, and i wasnt going to watch it ...buuuuuut your voice is so soothing to me, so i just watched the whole video!! lol !🩷 You just gave me the confidence to chop my alocasia up. Its HUGE so i was scared, but your video gave me hope 😊. I will hope it goes well, my big leaves are over 2 feet long, so im hoping for success!!!
9:45 Be cautious when using terra cotta, as it can wick the moisture away from the cuttings!!! If you use cling film make sure you wrap the whole thing and maybe water a little more to account for the moisture being drawn away.
Agree with the water dispersion. Maybe even include the terracotta pot in the wrapping? Or put the whole projects into a nice big clear plastic propagation bin?
Very good concern Aiden, the terracotta saucers I use are usually coated with a watertight layer on one side. But wrapping it all around with cling film and watering more would be a great way to ensure the water staying in.
It's like you're reading my mind Alessandra ^^ I actually had the saucer sitting in one of my big plastic propboxes 😁😁 It's still in there actually and the roots on the cuttings are finaly going crazy 🥳 Thank you for the input!
Just discovered your videos today and I have to say I love it! I love how much effort you put into them, I was looking for a good alocasia frydek propagation video for some time already and this was all I needed! Good luck further on!
I like to use a very sharp ceramic blade and a cutting mat that I make sure to wash first before cutting into stems. I'm not as experienced here, so I think this is the only thing I do that a lot of others might not.
Thank you for your video! I’m still trying to learn about these beautiful plants. I’m trying to save my longlobia variegated! I’m wondering how long did you wait for the top cuttings to dry before you popped them in water?
Honestly I do not remember, I'd say maybe 0.5 to 1 hour should be fine. You can just check if it's dry to the touch. Best of luck with your Longiloba, I hope you can save her 💚
I love that you document the process so well. I'm familiar with tropical plants, but I moved to Philadelphia over 1.5 year ago, and this is my first time growing indoors. I love alocasia. I've had 4 since. All die come winter. They are so finicky. I moved and they also died, they didn't like the change. The bulbs have survived, but every time I have to start again from scratch. They give me little warning. They start getting yellow and before I find if they need more light, less light, or less water, they're gone. Help please! I'd appreciate any advice you can offer in terms of light and water indoors 😢

I really don't know. They are just chilling in my living room, no special care. I have to say with little baby propagations of alocasia I had spider mites as well. Especially once I take them out of the propboxes. I guess they are more vulnerable than the mature plants and also the sudden change in humidity isn't helpful at all. With my little Alocasia Polly I am also struggling quite a bit. Oh no, I have same issue with my sad little polly. But both the Micholitziana and the Frydek are way more easy in my experience. Maybe you should give it a try 😉💚
.. I gave my Alocasia to Leca and just keeps the water level up in cover pot (bucket) so the Leca won't dry out and the roots still gets what they need.. Water.. Problem solved and the plant is happy.. Even during winter and lower light, there's no drop of leaves or droopy leafs.. During summer it is outside in the shade of a butterfly bush.. We are on the 4th or 5th year now..
Were you keeping the rootless cuttings and/or corms in an extra high humidity setting? Sorry if I missed any reference to this in the video. Propagation is just fun!!! 😊
No worries 😊, yes I try to keep them in a propbox or in a jar, to increase humidity while they sit in perlite, once they push out their first leave and grow some roots I transfer into soil and keep them in my normal living room conditions.
You have wonderful videos but i must tell you that you cannot do stem propagations on alocasias. What you did was propagate by using the central rhyzome. Hey! Meine Polly’s sterben ständig… ich weiß nicht wieso… ich habe schon versucht, junge und ausgewachsene Pflanzen in Blähton zu halten, hat nicht geklappt. In Erde ebenso wenig.
Thank you for reminding me to clean out my pots more often. I do it sometimes but you know, sometimes I forget or get lazy, so thanks for the little kick in the a** 😅. It luckily does work with dirty pot too. At least as long as there are no pests or disease on the previous plant.
I always wondered if Alocasia can be propagated by stem propagation....so I just did it! For science 🤓. What are your experiences with Alocasia props? In my opinion I prefer the seperation of corms. It's much faster and less stressful 😅😅

Wow, you buy Frydek EUR385? who long ago? in my country it just RM50 only medium size, and RM19-20 small size in 110-120 pot.

Add fertilizer or plant nutrition to the water propagated plants and they will thrive plus lots of light and roots grow like crazy

Agreed!
The drooping is caused by photo toxicity. Too much light will cause variegated Frydeks to do this. I have 5 of them.
Haven't thought about that I always thought they would only droop while it is sunny and then perk back up. Thank you for this crucial information! 🤓💚

Thanks for sharing this video, it really gave me some insight on propagation. I’ll be looking for more of your content.

Honey clean your pots. You put them in really dirty pots. You need fresh clean. Well maybe dirty works too.
Thank you for reminding me to clean out my pots more often. I do it sometimes but you know, sometimes I forget or get lazy, so thanks for the little kick in the a** 😅. It luckily does work with dirty pot too. At least as long as there are no pests or disease on the previous plant.
Ich höre dein Akzent raus. 👀
Erwischt 😅
