An alternative for such gates is spring hinges. Not cheap, but rugged and reliable.
A piece of strongish cord , a single wheeled pulley, an a weight (I used an old sash weight) .The weight closes the gate. I used a piece of plastic downpipe as a runner for the sash weight.
Like the sound of that. Pure invention.
paul1962uk I have used this before and it works fine, even if it has to go through the gate post to the other side.

Thanks for the video - it was very helpful. I've actually just fitted one of those "spring" type closers and yes, after the first opening it went off like a gun and fell apart (the peg was, and still is, nowhere to be found). You're right, very dangerous! It's going straight back to Amazon. In my opinion the bottom peg should be welded in and the top peg should be threaded for a tight fit with a small spanner.
Shop local... amazon can be hit and miss...
I always thought it would work even better if they made a slight curve at the end of the sliding bar, but they work, not used one outside though!
