  • Marty Stuart has dedicated his life to playing and preserving old country music. During his 40-plus years as a solo artist, Marty has released more than 20 albums and racked up numerous honors, including five Grammys, and an induction into the Country Music Hall Of Fame.
Marty started his career at the age of 12 playing mandolin in a gospel band. By 21, he’d joined Johnny Cash’s touring band, and eventually became a solo artist who combined classic rockabilly sounds with bluegrass and cosmic country. His latest album has a sweeping, spacious feel that's meant to conjure up visions of desert horizons and endless stretches of two-lane highways.
For today’s episode, Bruce Headlam met up with Marty Stuart at Bridge Studios in Brooklyn. Marty shared stories about first going on the road with the Sullivan Family Gospel Singers, and the very first show he ever played backing Johnny Cash where Marty pretended to know how to play the fiddle. Marty also talks about how a star-studded studio session with Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis gave him the confidence to pursue a solo career in country music.

    ABOUT BROKEN RECORD
For generations of music lovers, the liner notes on albums were a central part of the way music was heard. You bought an album and it came with an accompanying narrative: a digression, an aside, a backstory-maybe even an invented history. We intuitively understood that great music required not just listening but conversation between the artist and the audience and the audience and the rest of the world.
Broken Record is a podcast that restarts those conversations-in a world without liner notes-for a new audience of music lovers.
Broken Record is hosted by Justin Richmond with interviews by producer Rick Rubin, writer Malcolm Gladwell, and former New York Times editor Bruce Headlam.

Everytime I've seen him perform he knocked it out of the park. He even wrote a song about Steve Earle when he was released from prison, and performed it in front of them before they performed together a beautiful version of My Old Friend The Blues.

I second the last two comments. Marty is like the "golden child" of country music. Growing up as a child performing with legends. Walking with the song writers who connect with people from the heart. Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and Tom Petty. If you tried to make up a fictional story about how to be a country star, you couldn't dream up Marty's. Thanks for the interview and thanks to Marty for all the music.

Marty Stuart is a Great American. Love his spirit of adventure and wanting to create something new balanced by his reverence by what came before him. He is so talented…so reverential…and so badass. Love you man! A true sign of humility is partnering with others who have great strengths… Harry Stinson…Kenny Vaughn…Chris Scruggs…are you kidding me? Brilliant players who take it forward without loosing the thread! Stay True Stay Strong Stay Inspired!

Marty Stuart and his band are incredible. I just saw them with an old friend at the Fox in Bakersfield. We were blown away. I could hear them play live every night. Enjoyed the interview. He knows what he’s talking about.

Excellent interview. Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives are a band of, well, fabulous musicians. And Marty's The Pilgrim record is deep and wonderful, a landmark in country music, not just in his own career.

Thank you. I've been saying that the Pilgrim record is one best LPs in history, not just in country but in all of music period. I'm 40 so I was a kid when it came out and to this day I keep discovering new nuances and connctions to the music that I didn't hear or feel the time before.
I still find it hard to believe (but absolutely get it at the same time bc of how the business is) the backlash he received from the industry.
I just had to take the time to appreciate and show some gratitude to someone that gets it.
      Cheers
