- This is the full Marty Stuart interview.
Marty Stuart is a five-time GRAMMY-winner, platinum recording artist, Lifetime Achievement Award recipient from the Americana Music Association, Grand Ole Opry star, country music archivist, photographer, musician, and songwriter.
Since starting out singing gospel as a child, Stuart has spent over four decades celebrating American roots music. His teenage years on tour with bluegrass legend Lester Flatt in the ’70s were followed by six years in Johnny Cash’s band in the ’80s, and a chart-topping tenure as a solo artist in the ’90s.
Most recently, Stuart confirmed the 20th anniversary release of his celebrated record, The Pilgrim - Deluxe Edition for the first time ever on vinyl. These newly unearthed songs include features by Country music legends including Ralph Stanley, Connie Smith, Emmylou Harris, Earl Scruggs, and more.

Marty is a national treasure
Could not agree more!
Being part musicologist is part of being a musician. Having respect for those who came before, priceless
Kicked out of school for reading country song roundup.... I think that's the greatest thing I've ever heard in my life!!!👍😊
Thanks for watching 1966… Joe
That qualified him to be a Country Musician.
The Ultimate musician, a true artist, marvelous person. Love him. Are only true country music singer left that keeps the old country alive. He spans the generations.
Very well said, Marty is an amazing musician and entertainer and an even more amazing human being.
My son has been a guitarist since he was 12 and will turn 62 in April and is still playing in a band. He says it’s his Valium!
That’s a story I’ve heard often over the last 30 years Esther. I use to have a small chain of guitar shops in middle Tn. and Ky. All though we sold to a lot of well known and professional players the bulk was just normal people who would go home after a stressful day and pick up their guitar or other instruments and play if only for five or ten minutes and said that was their cocktail instead of drinking. It relaxed them. Thanks for watching and sharing your comments…. Best, Joe
Went from sitting on the couch to standing in front of the TV in the middle of the living room! Thank you an Marty Stuart for being the best!
He's so articulate. Fully committed to passing on that fire and joy to all of us. Great to see this amazing interview in its entirety, Joe.👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks again Ellie.... Joe
I love Marty - he continues to inspire me to be a better guitar player - I'm a good singer so I've got that covered ! 😎🎸
I agree Ellie
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum love Marty!
I've learned every time he speaks it's a historical event.
Huge respect for Marty Stuart, what a class act and a cool cat. He tells Ken Burns "I'm the deep end of the pool " concerning things country music, and he is that for sure. I always admired Marty as a player and thanks to Joe Chambers I have a deeper appreciation for the man.
Also love the fact that Marty is still rocking a world class mullet, you wear it well sir!
Thanks for watching Billy....Joe
Another awesome interview. Love Marty Stuart and the Fabulous Superlatives. Thanks!
'Joe did it'! It *is* an awesome achievement. And this series of interviews is creating a rich history in the words of the great musicians themselves. Wonderful!
Thanks Mairi…. Joe
beautifully spoken.
thank you!
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum
much and many thanks to you, joe!
absolutely no one does it better.
Miss you Joe - I have to. Believe that Marty is the most authentic celebrity ever- would love to verify it but let’s just say he’s no Blake Shelton ;)
Tom, my dad, Joe passed September 28th but he would have really appreciated your kind words and support for the channel.
Hope you can visit the museum sometime.
Best,
Britt
There's a mix of all the times Waylon and Johnny appeared on David Letterman's show thru the years. Either separately or together. It's pretty long, but I just watched it 2 weeks ago, all the way thru and everytime Johnny was on, there was Marty backing him up with David's band! Man, it's some great pickin'. I still love watching him with his band on his show. He's always turning us on to good people and great music! Thanks for always making music fun, brother! ✌😎
Wonderful interview! It’s great to witness the mutual respect Mr. Chambers and Mr. Stuart have for each other. Two men working hard to preserve our cultural heritage, thanks to both of you!
Thanks Scott....Joe
I teared up when Marty talked about the buses all being parked. The bunk beds out of the tour bus cracked me up! “ It’s a life sentence, chasing tone….” - Marty Stuart
Thanks for watching Tom……….Joe
Marty is one of the reasons I play a guitar - someone said Marty is a National Treasure - I couldn't agree more
Another great talk, a Mississippi brother, I'm from Hattiesburg. It was so cool that Flat & Scruggs, and Marty, were always so open and willing to mixing with other genres. And that's how good musicians, anybody who wants to grow, that's how to be. Appreciate this, and thanks brother Marty for letting us sit in. ✌😎
All the Stars relax so well with you. The real personalities come out.
Thanks again Bill…. Joe
Joe, this was Great. One of the coolest Guys in the music industry. Every musician dreams they were in Marty's Band.
Thanks Robert... Glad you enjoyed it...best, Joe
if i could play them I would love Handsoms job
Already watched the individuals. Was worth a rewatch. Marty is the living history book of music.
Ernest Tubb's
record store in Nashville has closed and has been bought out by a developer.
It would be an awesome thing to see the historical store get a second chance like the Ryman did.
A STATESMAN. A GENTLEMAN. A STELLAR MUSICIAN. A FONT OF INFORMATION. EXTREMELY WELL-SPOKEN. Could listen to them for hours.
Absolutely LOVED the interview with Marty Stuart! Thank you.
Thanks Nancy….Joe
Visited Sun Studios about 15 years back. There was a wall lined with guitars in stands. One, a Martin I believe, had written the soundboard below the bridge,
"If I left this at your house......
Please Return it to me at
706 Union Ave. Memphis Ten
I'll pick it up. sooner or later.
Marty Stuart"
I loved it.
Joe:
If I had to chose your "best" interview, I would have to say that this is it!
Marty showed us that no matter how different our backgrounds, and where we come from or what we music we play, we all have a lot more in common than we would think: I did photography as a kid. Like Marty, my first camera was a Kodak X15 (second version); I worked my way up to developing my own black and white film, and eventually got a Canon A-1. Many musicians are also painters, and cooks; knife makers, and gun collectors; history buffs; etc.
Marty didn't want to go to Hollywood or New York; he wanted to go to Nashville, play Fender and Martin guitars, where the clothes, and play country music. I didn't ant to go to Hollywood or Nashville; I wanted go to London or stay in New York, and play Rock and Soul music, play Rickenbacker, Fender, and Gibson guitars; where the clothes of English Mods.
How important it is to preserve music heritage: exposing the millennial and post-millennial generations to what came before. The fact that he wanted to save the Ryman-and did! At one time I thought about doing something to save and restore The Fillmore East. Unfortunately, no one cared, and the building has been owned by New York University for over three decades now.
I keep learning something from your interviews every time watch them; especially about Nashville and country music.
Thank you!
Thanks again Stu.....Joe
took my wife to see Marty a few years ago.She actually did'nt know of him (growing up in New Jersey). I just told her we have to go - Marty is an amazing artist, musician and a true "Country" icon. We stood right in front the whole show and She loved every moment. Just an incredible performer and showman was her impression. She is now one of the biggest Marty Stuart fans going !
Back in 1986, there were some things that not all artists agreed upon which sent Marty on pathways to thrive, thanks for going down that path Marty, stuntgirl
My goodness, that was a great interview. Not just interviewer and interviewee but old friends reminiscing. Brilliant!
Thanks Bill….Joe
Love Marty. Love his tv show. Kenny is a marvel. Well, that whole band is. Handsome Harry and the Apostle Paul’s voice are just perfect and heavenly. I am always amazed with ther voices. Together with Marty and Kenny’s surf dripping reverb on their guitars just hits all kinds of sweet nerves!
A great respect for Marty Stuart carrying the country torch. He's instantly identifiable soon as his I hear his music.
Excellent interview and subject, Joe. I believe this one will prove to be historic. It was good to see that Marty has some tour dates lined up this month, and hopefully we can all put the COVID scourge behind us.
Thanks Ben...Joe
Great interview Joe, you 2 mean a lot to country music. Thank you
Thanks Jeff... sincerely, joe
Two of my favorite people in the World, Joe and Marty. I've watched the Marty interviews many times. They're worth seeing again and again. ✌❤
Thank you Will…Joe
I swear, I don't know if Marty realises how freaking fortunate he has really been. He hosted the Porter Wagoner 50th anniversary Grand Ole Opry celebration, for crying out loud. The dude has played with everyone I can remember my folks ever watching on television back in the sixties when I was a kid. He's played with the Byrds. Hell, only Neil Armstrong could say that he's done something that Marty hasn't done. Yet here he is, in the same boat with the rest of us, unable to perform on account of this damned coronavirus. Sheesh. Gimme a break. What a fantastic guy.
Thanks Johnny...Joe
THANK YOU,JOE.
I can’t ever imagine the day he is gone. It will be such a tremendous loss.
So very true
hope to see marty and the band up to canada near future.lotsa fans up here Marty.... thanks Joe

Marty Stuart….is Awesome….so is his band…and Connie is. Awesome, too.❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
Really impressive, sorry I only recently got introduced to Marty as an artist.
Marty is great Live. He opened for Steve Miller at the Hollywood Bowl a few years ago. He and his band were very hip. Baby blue cowboy suits. 💞
Fantastic interview!! I love Marty so much and love listening to him tell stories. Really nice rapport between Joe and Marty.

I spent my working life interviewing people and I agree with you - Joe Chambers does the best interviews. He is able to bring out the best in every musician he interviews. It is (another) gift he has.
Outstanding as always Joe!
Thanks Steve( as always too) ....Joe
A fascinating show. One hour well spent.
Great interview, Joe!! I always enjoy your show.
That was an amazing interview. Joe, I didn't know really your history before this, so thank you for all the you and Marty have done, and continue to do, for music.
Thanks Serenity…Joe
Watched the individual interviews and watched this, too. Great job. Very well done.
Thanks Johnny...Joe
Marty is a gem.
Fantastic interview… Luv Marty Stuart!
'Charlie McCoy was playing his keys his car keys - on a session' 😲 That is a piece of history right there. This interview is gold-dust!
Wonderful interview! Thank you so much for this and for your entire channel! 😊
Marty is one of the good guys. Thanks for the great interview.
Two beautiful souls! Thank you!
Beautiful interview of beautiful man Thanks Joe
Thanks as always Nelly....Joe
Wow
I never knew about Marty Stuart how much he has been involved in the music I grew up on. Thank you 😊
Many interesting points to think over in this interview. One of them is when we finally move on from the pandemic will audiences remember in the long term the loss they tell us they are all feeling without music. Will that be reflected in increased ticket sales and albums. Will they decide to spend more money on downloads…which I hate.. than they did previously, realising that the artists return for their work is minimal and that the non creative download platform sharks are the only financial winners here. Most of all, in those smaller venues when musicians are up there giving their all to making music will they stop talking and listen. If not then I suggest they go outside, go home or just somewhere, anywhere else and exercise their vocal chords there. Christy Moore puts it more succinctly than that to an audience member in one of his videos. It’s not for me to repeat it here. It’s direct, to the point and witheringly accurate
Such joy listening to these wonderful human beings!
Thanks for watching Gary.....Joe
Marty every guy in the band is distinctive like John, Paul, George and Ringo
Great discussion. Thanks Joe. Thanks Marty.
What a killer interview and what a killer artist! I love his work, his personality and demeanor and he makes you feel like he’s an old friend. I watch the reruns of his great show on RFD TV; and The Superlatives are one of the best bands I’ve ever seen. Such a group of killer infinitely talented musicians; absolutely top notch; just like you Joe! Lovely interview!
VERY, VERY Good! ... I have the utmost respect for both of you, Marty is such a Statesman Thank you for sharing!
Thanks Craig…… Joe
Enjoyed this interview! I come from a musically inclined family of classic & soft rockers. Closest country music I ever listened to is Johnny Cash. Recently started binge watching interviews with musicians...discovered Marty from a Cash interview. Haven’t listened to his music yet (discovered Jerry Lee Lewis and decided I need to up my piano game). But I have a feeling when I do listen to his music, I will very much like it...he seems very down to earth and could listen to him be interviewed all day. Thank you for sharing this!
Joe, great show with Marty!
Thanks Amp....Joe
Fabulous and incomparable band/group. Marty, Kenny, Harry and Chris. Superlative musicians.
have seen Martys book soo cool. but I soo wish and hope you can let him know, MARTY please please write a book
I love old jazz photos too, those intimate session shots you see on blue note reissue CDs,from the fifties and sixties, those cats looked so cool too. Good on you Marty, always interesting.
I have a funny and embarrassing Marty Stuart story.... When Tempted came out (91'ish ) my 4 year old nephew was a super Marty Stuart fan so when it was announced Marty would be playing Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park i purchased a couple of tickets ( Being a fan of Marty Stuart myself ) for us to go see him during a day concert.. So we go and watch Marty's concert & my nephew Randall is having the time of his life looking and listening to Marty up on the stage.. The concert ends and it was announced if the crowd purchased merchandise from the show Marty would set up soon in-front of the stage to autograph it.. My nephew was begging me to buy him a T-shirt so he could meet Marty and of course i said yes.. So we wait in-line and finally get face to face with Marty and i tell him the concert was amazing and that my nephew ( who I'm holding up with his arms around my neck ) Randall was his biggest fan.. Marty looks and Randall and says is that right? And crickets chirp, Randall says nothing.. And i say to Randall all you've talked about for a month is going to see Marty Stuart what's wrong with you boy why are you getting all shy now? and he won't even look at Marty, he just turns his face to my ear and says without whispering because it's so loud " That's not Marty Stuart! He's too short to be Marty Stuart. My eyes got as big around as silver dollars and i said RANDALL. Marty just laughed & signed the shirt as i repeatedly apologized then made a quick getaway... I was so embarrassed but Marty was a good sport about it... About 10 years after that i bumped into Marty and his wife Connie Smith on Bourbon Street... I didn't mention the Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park story... Lol.. A true Marty Stuart fan even if he is too short to be Marty Stuart
Great story!
Thank you, Joe
Thank you too SS...Joe
I miss Joe. Thank-You for everything Joe & Marty.
❤️ Love this channel Joe C! yes I do. I think I’ve said it before: I met Johnny Cash when I was a little girl backstage early 60s. He spoke to me and my sister and my mom gave us a hug and took TIME. Johnny Cash said we reminded him of his little girls at home. He impacted my life forever. This is a beautiful interview Marty Stuart is a special person
Marty is a cool guy and so knowlegeble ,Happy to see him help with restoration of the Ryman so awesome to hear this means alot about the kind of guy he is and all the people that made sure it happened,Im want to visit your Museum as well Joe ,hopefully soon we just need covid to go away ,and yes people really need thier live music ,very awesome Interview!!!

Thanks Brother T.....Best...Brother J. P.S .... just found a interview I shot in 2007 with Gary Puckett... I think you’ll like it.
@@MusiciansHallofFameMuseum I’m sure I will brother Joe.
Joe did you have a guitar store in Sevierville or Pigion Forge at one time? And you know how much I love these vidios. This is wonderful. 👍🏻😎
Hi David.... thanks for watching.. much appreciated. No... not in Pigion Forge. There was a Joe and Charlie Chambers in Chattanooga, Tn but no relation. I had stores in Bowling Green, Kentucky, Franklin, Smyrna, Murfressboro and Nashville, Tn. Best.....Joe
Joe, I just watched this one again, maybe the third time now and I don't have enough 'superlatives' to describe Marty Stuart, or Joe Chambers. Marty is a pleasure to listen to, a true intellectual in addition to his musical credentials. I've seen the Superlatives numerous times and again, I don't have the words to describe them and their importance to country music. Joe, you are a treasure as well. A great interviewer; your immense knowledge of your subject is every bit the star of these segments. I will get down there someday to visit your place and hopefully get a chance to say hello. Please keep up the good work.
JH…. That’s about the nicest thing anyone could say about me. I just love what I do and the great music I have enjoyed listening to and playing my whole life. I hope to meet you here someday too…. Sincerely, Joe
those dynamics are why the Funk Brothers sound soo good
Something about Marty !
I'll put my hands up! I'm an an absolute Marty tragic for over 30 years!!!
"Touch me, turn me on and burn me down"!
Just enjoyed the excellent performance of Roger McGuinn on The Marty Stewart Show and there you were Joe in the front row, big smile, diggin' it.
