I saw DEVO at Gaston hall at Georgetown University in DC 1979 and it was a fantastic show. The high gothic architecture of the hall that looked like someplace where the Spanish inquisition trials would be held and here is the band from the future preaching Devolution. A surreal experience to say the least.
Ya know, Mark? I took piano lessons in the last foster home I was in, from '72 to '74. between the ages of 10 and 12. My foster mother was a musical teacher with 4 sons of her own, and each son played an instrument. They talked me into taking piano lessons, so I had to get up when the high school boys got up for school. I would do all my 6 times a piece lessons, while they ate breakfast. Then, I would have my chow and off to school I went. So, while you guys were working on making your mark (no pun intended), I was slaving away, having all kinds of what the hell have I gotten myself into thoughts. I say all that to say this: If I had known about you guys...I might have stuck it out, lol. Not only that, but I'm a fellow Ohioan born and bred, down here in Athens (OU, Baby!). Anyhoo, I know none of you guys that matter will ever see this comment, but it's all good. Mad props, brother. Tell Mr. Casale and Bob 1 mad props to them as well. Talk atcha, man. I got some reality to monitor...now where the hell's my potato? 😎
Went to High School with Mark at Woodridge H.S. in Peninsula Ohio. He wore big glasses curly hair and carried a brief case. We kind of picked on him. Not mean way but funny to us. Now look who has the last laugh, but being much older now like him, I am very happy for him and privileged to say I knew him when. I guess I owe him an apology, so Hey Mark, sorry for having fun times on you and now you have great poetic justice on me. I still like to listen to and watch Whip It ! Be safe and God Bless you and family.
Great interview. MM always has great stories, though not sure about that Beatles one. I wish interviewers would ask him about his vocal style. He doesn't get enough credit for it.
Dude I've heard the bootleg of that gig, that's like the dream DEVO gig. Believe was the first time they played girl u want and whip it live? They also played fountain of filth which is rarer than rare, the mysterious Christian rock band DOVE also opened for them.
Not sure MM has the Rust Never Sleeps story right. Rust Never Sleeps was a Rust Oleum slogan from 1979. Never heard anything about Midas Muffler nor could I find anything suggesting such.
As I suspected, most of the Devo members were on the spectrum. Damaging his siblings Bee Gees albums was a way to induce perseveration, a frequent theme in their music, and a characteristic of autistic types.
DEVO far from just a fun Band far from it when you see DEVO you were in for a great CONCERT..That my fist sober concert Massey Hall Toronto Ontario 1981 that was 43 years a go..
Before punk there was De-Evolution in Akron and when they got to SNL people were dazed and confused. Satisfaction was incredible and even Mick got it.

If it wasn't surreal then it wasn't DEVO you heard playing. They were ahead of the curve even in the mid 70s.

Devo Live - The Mongoloid Years has the Halloween 1975 set that Mark is talking about where the crowd loses it and the show falls apart.
Yes, Mark seems to have forgotten that they released it.
The liner notes on that are awesome. Everyone was doing nitrous and NOT enjoying Devo? How?! 😂
great interview wow such awesome stories!!
Thank you Mark, you spoke for me and all those around me growing up in the late 70s- early 80s.
It's rare that anyone can hold my attention for an hour. It's a testament to how interesting and talented a musician Mark Mothersbaugh is.
WE'RE ALL DEVO! THANKS FOR THIS AND THANK YOU MARK / DEVO 🥔
Happy 50th Anniversary to DEVO and De-Evolution. I love you Booji Boy.

Devo changed my life.
Fantastic conversation with the musical genius Mark Mothersbaugh

Great interview!
The Best Frontman in history.
Incredible front man. Devo does not get the respect they deserve.
Awesome interview, sweet guy
I enjoyed this interview a lot!!!!
Really enjoyed that.
👌 another awesome BR episode
Idk man, after Something for Everybody, I'm pretty open to hearing new DEVO. LOVE that album
If you haven't got it, Something Else for Everybody is awesome too.
The amount of AWs in this is off the charts. I love it.

holy sheet never knew Mothersbaugh was at Kent St
Mark is so creative and intelligent
Thanks so much!
We need a Devo story time show
boogie boy! saw DEVO 1980 new years eve in long beach in our ripstop nylon jumpsuits - duty now for the future
@docter Going forward, we ALL must acknowledge that DUTY!..

Wow, that's interesting! I did not know that: what a beautiful world!@@WinslowLeach-ko5wz
In the 80's I thought they were a joke band too. Now I realize, they were 100% right. We are de-evolving.
Sometimes I think David Byrne was a pale imitation of Mothersbaugh.
@22:00 So wild, mention of Devo + Sex Pistols last show at Mabuhay Gardens.
Mark Mothersbaugh = GENIUS 🤓
❤️ Devo
Mark needs to produce a John Hinkley jr album
Mark is a musical genius
Mark is not only a musical genius he’s an artistic genius
Mark is cool

Go outside without your phone for at least an hour and get a second hobby, quickly.
Hahaha
Diving deep into the pool.... hey whos that dude down there? Wow. It's a DEVO!
The crazy thing is that Joni Mitchell apparently developed
Morgellons disease 47:26
@:5:01 HAHAHAH ,Totally sounded like the presenter, Brilliant !!!
Akron has given us both Devo and Alcoholics Anonymous.

Mark is Total DEVO.
