Dude, SUPER HELPFUL! upgrading from my T5. Which I use as a working drive to edit photos and video. seeing you transfer 160GB in under 3 minutes is crazy!
this has sold me on the T9 over T7...time to speed up workflow! gonna get the 2TB, used to only 1TB working drive to I can store more and ready to shoot more 4k files!
Great video, was not bored, great visuals and info. Awesome work my man! Thank you 🏴‍☠

Random benefit to that USB-A to USB-C cable that's included: it's great for connecting the iPhone 15 series phones to older cars that have CarPlay. I ran into issues with lightweight (and as it turns out, charging only) A-to-C cables, but the cable that comes with the Samsung T-series SSDs is perfect! They're nice and short, and can handle the data transfer requirements for CarPlay connections. I stick with the USB-C only cable for connecting my Samsung SSD to the Mac.

One thing I found out, the included usb-c to usb-c is not capable of sustained speeds. if you say use it for 4k video capture on 15 pro as an example, after 28 seconds, you will see dropped frames. I bought some usb c cables which were usb 3.2 gen 2 and they worked fine. silly that Samsung does not include the cable meant for those speeds

I am not a film creator, I am not moving folders of 100GB. At this moment the T7 is a better deal. I own the T5 (500GB) and a T7 Touch 2TB. I am quite sure you will not notice a speed difference in normal conditions. So far I can see a normal T7 has a lower price compared to the T9.

Speed tests are largely meaningless until you tell us what drive format you used. Most likely you used ExFAT which is a big no-no on the Mac when it comes to getting good performance. Reformat as APFS and run the Black Magic Speed test so we can get a better feel for how fast the drive is. Thanks.

I just bought the 4GB T9. I absolutely love it. I've been using Samsung's SSD's since the T5, and have never had a problem. Okay, once I had to reformat and reload the firmware on my T7 Shield, but it solved the problem and is still running strong.

  • @Rob_G66
    @Rob_G66 3 місяці тому +1

I reformatted the drive as NTFS because I'm only ever using it with windows machines and this also allows for TRIM support. Transfer speeds were also quite poor with the factory exFat partitioning. Transfers are faster with NTFS, but still a bit erratic and may still show slowdown after a while. So, why even bother with this drive unless you're getting it cheap on sale? An nvme or standard SSD in an external enclosure is probably going to perform far better and more consistently.

The TB4 ports on Mac support USB 4.0 which is even faster. It will not likely have backwards compatibility for these drives only now hitting the market. 2x2 was an interim spec bump. IMO do not buy. Wait for USB 4.0 which is already in some products unless you really need a SSD now and cannot wait

The fact that it is up to twice as fast does not really help us Mac Users as we lack the USB 3.1 2x2 necessary for the maximum speed. Somehow USB 4 does not support USB 3.1 2x2 and we will only get up to 1 TB speed not up to 2 TB speed so.

I really like the Samsung ssds, I use them since the T5 came out. They are small, compact, fast and reliable. The 9nly thing I hate about the new T7 shield and the T9 is that Samsung is still using that awful silicone cover over the ssd that collect dust and tiny specs out of your pocket like a crazy! I even removed that silicon cover of my T7 Shield as underneath ssd I'd just silver aluminum. I think that Samsung need to retching they materials fir cover.

Thanks :) This was great useful info. Another factor here is the T9 costs about twice as much as the T7. :) I was going to sell my T7 Shield I haven't used yet in anticipation of Black Friday sales on the T9. But if 50GB and under files, which is what I'd be transferring mostly, transfer at the same rate, maybe I'll just keep my T7. Plus I really don't like the lint problem. I think the reason for that is they needed to make it porous for heat disipation.

This 170gb of cache is for the 4tb models of the T9 only. At 2tb cache sizes are more in line with the T7. I Googled it. Is cache size super important. Yes and no. I have a 500gb T5 to transfer files between computers. I am a volume photo editor and my folders are routinely over 100gb. I think my cache is 23gb. I regularly over run the cache. Is my drive slower? Yes. Is it unbearably slower? No. Is that 5 minutes that you save transferring a 160gb file all that important to you? Only you can answer that.

So even on a Thunderbolt port, you won't get 20gbps?

When you made the note about the usbA cable, you also should have noted that not every type c port is the same neither. A user should first check what type c and gen it is before waisitng money on a drive which will never get to that speed on day your laptop

Don't get me started on USB-C! I did a whole video about why the standard is kind of awful! The idea is great but the implementation has been terrible.

@@AppleInsider okay, will watch. Thanks! Yeah the USBC was nice, but same issue as with all cables. Not only do different ports make a difference, also the vast amount of different quality cables makes it nightmare

I have a T7 and when I formatted to the Mac file system, my iPhone 15 Pro Max would not recognize it, or it would for a second or two and then crash. I reformatted it to exFAT and it works fine. I don't get it.

Odd! Apple says "An external storage device must have only a single data partition, and it must be formatted as APFS, APFS (encrypted), macOS Extended (HFS+), exFAT (FAT64), FAT32, or FAT."

Did you insert your USB-A cable into a fast USB-A port? maybe you just put it into a USB-A 2.0 port? and that's why the speed is slow?
