      @pauldittus  2 роки тому

      Hey friend! It depends on how you use it. For example, if you are currently booting from an HDD and you switch out the internal for an SSD or boot from the external SSD, you will likely see things move faster. I switched out my HDD on my old 2010 MacBook Pro and added ram back in the day and it made a world of a difference. I'm not the expert, but still I'm pretty sure that comparison ssd vs hdd sound like a bullshit. Of course ssd is much faster, but speed of hdd is about 130-150MB/s, not so low as in the video where is shown 40MB/s. Other thing is hdd are also small, bigger than ssd, but only about 40-60% depending of storage amount. From the other side it's easier to damage hdd, because of its construction, but the same it could be said about smartphones, when you drop them on the floor.

    • @pauldittus
      @pauldittus  2 роки тому

      Hey friend! Thanks for the message. You are correct that some HDD are faster than the one I tested. Mine that I tested wasn’t as fast (at least in the test I ran).
      It is also true that the particular HDD I had was much bigger than smaller portable HDD that don’t require power or fans.
      I guess this was my test results and my experiences. I will also say that the computer I used to test the SSDs wasn’t able to show the full potential as it didn’t support the full speeds.
      I am hoping to create an updated video now that I have a new computer which can show the speeds of the SSDs.
      Cheers 😊

    I have both! I work on large (20~200gb) UE4 projects on my two T7s that light is nice you can tell if things are working. 2 years and they’re still great. Not really portable friendly because of their sleekness, I’ve dropped one a few times on my attempts at carrying them with me but everything seems fine. When I’m moving my laptop around the house sometimes I try to keep my two T7s plugged in, they’ll like slip off and smack eachother. These are better for stationary use or if you plan to hide them in a secure backpack or something after use.
    I got the Sandisk one for an on the go emergency backup. It’s very unlikely but I always get scared we’d have like a disaster a house fire or a robbery or something and I’d lose years of work. I don’t want to pay for a cloud service so having a durable SSD on me at all times gives me that sense of security. With the way it’s built it’s more suited for the outdoors than the T7.
    I never really keep track on how fast these things are but I’m transferring a 241gb folder from my T7 to my Sandisk and eta is about 2 hours 55 mins and sometimes the eta fluctuates. 11% in and it went to 1 hour 50 mins.

When you own over 16,000 music videos and these Sandisk Extreme Pro 4tb are unreliable this was unacceptable to me especially before a gig! Thank god I had a good backup in my "Lacie 5tb" external hd. and after shipping it back (Sandisk) and also returning the replacment one at the same time and getting my refund and investigated more about those Sandisk problems and found out they had all similar issues to mine, So I went on to buy the SSD "Samsung 4TB Shield" after doing my research about them so I bought it and happy that I did with no issues! As a professional video editor, I know storage is a huge deal. I got 2 NVMe SSDs and 3 SATA HDDs sitting in my desktop computer totaling in 2.5TB of NVMe storage and 25TB of HDD storage. My workflow usually is storing projects I am currently working on on my M.2 NVMe SSDs and later moving them to HDDs when I am done with them or barely need to change stuff in them because they are basically done. I went for the T7 2TB ssd to actually get footage I recorded on the shooting (I am also a professional camera operator/DP) over to my PC, but the SanDisk wouldve worked just as well. They are basically the same devices. Just grab the one that is currently cheaper or the one you find better looking.
    Keep in mind, when copying large amounts of files at once, the writing speed usually dramatically decreases once you have written files worth of 25% of the entire storages space. The reason behind this is that manufacturers usually only have 1/4th amount of the storage being SLC (single level cell) storage and write to that first. The longer time storage is usually TLC (triple level cell) storage, which is much more compact but also only 33% as fast as the SLC storage. When not currently using your SSD, it will automatically move the copied files from the SLC cache over to the TLC storage to then be able to copy stuff quickly again. Thats why it only really matters much, if you copy A LOT at once.
    If you have ever edited a video in 4K with multiple cameras recording in intra frame codec, you know that 500GB of footage are easily recorded, even when not recording in raw. But even for shootings with 1 camera you can also easily fill up 500GB or more, depending on what you are doing - but filling them in a day is no problemo even in Inter frame codecs with just 1 camera.
    1TB may be enough for most of your shoots - just keep in mind that the 1TB version of either of these devices will get slow twice as fast compared to its 2TB counter part, because 1TB SSDs usually just have 250GB of the desirable very fast SLC storage, while 2TB ones usually have 500GB.

      We use USB-C to USB-C on our studio equipment ie. iMacs...our location kit is instead a Windows 11 MSI gaming machine certainly not your typical location Laptop. Here we use USB-C to USB-A and we have never found it lagging or dropping off and the dropping off of any HDD or SSD is as we know...is royally a pain in the a**. The one thing people miss interpret on is the cable....Personally we kept our Seagate cables and use them for location work as they are a lot beefier and transfer data, images, motion files excellently. One other thing we added to our location laptop is a standard Bank of America rubber credit card sleeve ... they sticky on to the outside of the machine and hold securely the SSD so we can use a mini length 4" cable...keeps things tidy and comfortably out of the way. Removal is easy as there is absolutely no residue left behind.
      @alvareo92 We we have had to utilize 10G for a few contracts....yes, the specific cable was introduced to attain those speeds. Was it worth it? likely not for us, but each instance is different. I personally don't require 10G transfer speed ... as that is the time i get to actually enjoy the few minutes of downtime to myself.

      Samsung Amazon product page: “BUILT STRONG & SECURE: Shock-resistant and withstands drops from 6ft.”

    Last week attached a T7 1TB to my Xbox One, and Xbox One X. World of difference. Next gen consoles are impossible to get. But adding these to last gen consoles makes game launching, running games, so much better. Say goodbye to texture pop! Graphics are marginally improved in that the console does have to compensate for texture pop by down grading the texture. I am guessing. There could be a different but similar reason, but either way, games can look better. Especially when movement is taking place on screen. Much faster than on board internal drive. Wish I could transfer OS to the SSD.

    Sandisk Extreme SSDs all have the same problem: heat dissipation sucks. Sandisk Extreme generate way more heat compared with the Samsung T series, even the slower SATA Extreme heats up real fast. And the rubberised enclosure just make the heat to keep inside. Samsung T series generate way less heat and the aluminium enclosure is good for heat dissipation.

I know some people use the Extreme Pro V2 (the USB3.2*2 one) and they also told me those run really hot. What I've experienced is regardless the Extreme is doing anything or not, it heats up after half a minute when plugged into a computer (and of course the computer is powered on so the Extreme will be powered too), while the Samsung only runs hot when it's under some heavy work loads, and it'll be complete cool to touch if it's not doing anything.

    What happens if you want to clone your Win 10 PC, take the Sandisk on a trip, then hook it up to a computer at a friend or relative's house and use it there - do you have to buy a whole new MS product key for Win 10, or can you just run it the same as if it were your regular home PC using its own hard drive at home? What if you also want to do that win an old Win XP PC? I think I read that you'd need a whole new product key for that.

I’m hoping to upgrade my computer in the new year so I could test the speeds again.

    • @pauldittus
      @pauldittus  2 роки тому

      Hey J.D.! Great question. These are fast and portable options. They will be more expensive than a traditional disk drive, but if you don't need a lot of storage and want portability these are great options. That said, I recently returned one of my SSDs to buy a large hard drive. Here is my paid link to the WD Elements drive I bought: amzn.to/3cuVNUf
      If you need A LOT of space and don't want to spend as much per TB this is a great option. Downsides of the WD Elements I don't like that it requires power, is less durable, and is harder to transport.

I prefer using an external drive as it's less stress on my internal hard drive. Your use case doesn't sound particularly draining for an SSD. All drives have a certain lifespan.
