In this video, we’re going to talk about ketones and fasting.
Are high ketones during fasting dangerous?
There’s a lot of confusion about the difference between nutritional ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis.
Mainstream medicine often doesn’t differentiate between these types of ketosis. Without this differentiation, you might be worried about being in ketosis.
Ketoacidosis is a serious health concern and can even lead to coma and death.
Ketones in the urine can be a sign of a medical emergency when it comes to ketoacidosis-not with nutritional ketosis.
There are 12 levels of ketosis. Levels 1 to 5 are where most nutritional ketosis and intermittent fasting take place. Levels 6 to 8 are where your body might be if you’re doing prolonged fasting. After level 9, your body is in ketoacidosis. This isn’t the level of ketosis that happens on a Healthy Keto diet. Ketoacidosis primarily happens to diabetics who don’t take the right amount of insulin.
In summary, ketoacidosis is very different from nutritional ketosis. While one is hazardous to your health, the other can help improve your health and support a healthy body.

Thanks for watching. I hope this helped explain the difference between nutritional ketosis and ketoacidosis. I’ll see you in the next video.
I have experienced this… asked my Dr if the keto diet is the way to go- her response was immediately “ diabetics go into ketosis as they are dying, why would you want to put yourself in that state?” Now I’m not a medical professional in any capacity, but immediately I thought to myself “but I’m not diabetic”. I just said ok. Started Keto and fasting -lost weight. Went back to her 6mon later, blood panel was beautiful and she asked what I did to make the changes. I told her and she was speechless. That made me realize one must take control of their health by doing one’s own research in these issues.
Most doctors have only one skill today: writing "antibiotic" on a piece of paper.
And 'cut and burn', then bill. Rinse and repeat.
Hey my doctor. I need formulas. for my. How to height posture ? Because i am 160cm. And 30 years. I need 180cm sir. Please help answer me
Yes and panadol and ibuprofen
Correct😂
Is a ketone level of 80 mg/dl okay on a keto diet if you have just fasted for 24 hours? I have been on a keto diet for 16 days, often do Omad and eat 20-30 grams of carbs.
The difference is:
Nutritional Ketosis - High ketone levels with normal/low blood glucose levels.
Diabetic Ketoacidosis - Very high ketone levels with very high blood glucose levels (the combination is deadly).
I am currently on day 32 of a 40 day water-only fast and have ketone levels of 8.2 mmol/L and blood glucose of 3.0 mmol/L. I feel absolutely great! This experience truly has been life changing! :)
Imogen, do you supplement any elektrolytes? Dr. Berg is usually talking about loosing potassium with urine. And I can just confirm - if I am on longer fast I get problems if not supplementing potassium & Co.
We're you able to exercise during this time and did you supplement anything?? Am doing research because I want to do the same thanks
Good luck. Lets us know how r U doing 👍🏻. I bet U at least take salt. Right?

I’m a nurse practitioner. I encourage my patients to fast. I’ve supervised many prolonged water fasts and there has never been an incident of ketoacidosis. Every single fast has been a success. Fasting is one of the healthiest interventions for most disease processes. Ketosis and fasting are not the same but you will be in ketosis while fasting. ❤
How long were those fasts? I’m healthy but I’m afraid that if I do a fast longer than 5 days will put my ketone levels at 10+ when I’m already at almost 7 after 4 days. I wanna do 21 days of water fast but I’m scared my ketone levels will be 10+. How do you prevent that or do ketone levels not depend on length of fast?
One thing I read about how to lower your ketone levels if they get too high is to drink enough water to flush the ketones out. But also make sure you get your electrolytes back in. You can do this by adding a little lemon (real lemon, not reconstructed) to your water, or sea salt-celtic sea salt has more minerals than Himalayan- or electrolytes you can purchase; just check the sugar content.
And remember. Every "body" is different. Instead of getting scared, get curious about what your body is telling you. For instance, if you get a headache it could mean you need more water and/or more electrolytes.
Hope this helps and you continue enjoying your fasting journey.😎👍
My GP was the one who suggested Keto, and I will be forever grateful!
You must be some of the luckiest patient there is! Where is your doctor located?
I've had that "discussion" with my doctor. He had no idea! So, to fix the problem, I quit going to the guy!
Mine just doesn't want to know.....no other docs to change to as we have a severe doctor shortage.

My life's experience is doctors only try to relieve or antagonize symptoms for another appointment and a trip to big pharma. But no health.
Most often true!

Most doctors don't know diddly except how to push them pills and jabs.
Most doctors practice with what they learned in school from doctors taught by the previous generation. You'd like them to be deeply thoughtful people but they do what they're told by the 'experts' that instructed them and they don't want to change their 'learned opinions' anymore than anyone else.
Most doctors practice the Rockefeller approved version of big-pharma based medicine.

I just completed my first 3 day water fasting. My ketone level at the end of fasting (before eating anything) is 6.3. I am proud to say that I completed my 3 day water fasting with little issues. I only started to feel a bit weak on the 3rd day..., that's all. I will be doing monthly 3 day water fasting from now on!! Yeah to myself!!
Great! Thank you so much for sharing!
Have you checked Dr Berg's videos on feeling weak? Or on how to fast with no side effects?
@@healthyketoexperiment7964 Will do.. will attempt my first 5-day water fasting on December
Also very important to understand healing crisis during fast. You should always break your fast when you are feeling great. Wait until the weakness passes, even if it takes another day. Otherwise you interrupt a healing process if you break the fast whe you feel unwell. Happy healing :)
@idontgotouniversity make sure you are getting some form of electrolytes while you fast, that will help with the weakness.
This is an extremely important information.thank you doc for sharing.

thank you so much! I am on day 10 of a fast and ketones are at 7, so I was getting concerned. And this answered my question beautifully! I am benefiting greatly from your videos! God Bless You!!!!
Did they stay at 7?? Or go up?
Thanks Doc. I had a scare the other day. Im on day 18 of a water/tea fast(with electrolytes and sodium) My ketones normally float around 5. Now Im not much of a coffee drinker but had 3 cups the other day while in a meeting for the first time in years. I check my ketones that evening with keto-mojo and it just registered as "HI", I thought that was weird so I measured again, same thing. I go and look it up and it stops registering over 8.0 so I knew I was at least that high. Then I check my blood glucose, it ran down to 71. Started freaking out at that moment as from what i seen, below 70 is dangerous territory, Im not diabetic but everything I was reading was I was entering into ketoacidosis. I felt amazing but wasn't sure what to believe. I took a few grams of carbs to get my blood glucose back up to 80. Never an issue till I started drinking coffee. So yesterday I tried one cup of coffee as I am really curious what's going on with me. Measured that evening again ketones were 7.0 and blood sugar was 74. blood pressure 121/72. Still feel great. This video help to reassure Im doing OK.
I had a similar scare this morning. I am on Day 4 of a 5 day water fast, Keto-Mojo meter showed my ketones as a flashing "HI", and blood glucose at 64. I feel perfectly fine but the "HI" reading freaked me out a bit. (Dr Google would have me believe that death is imminent lol!). I found this video, and am once again reassured by Dr Berg that all is well. Big shout out to Dr Berg for all the accurate, free health information - he is my go-to guy and has helped me regain my health and a normal BMI after a toxic work environment.
I just watched two videos today that said it’s when ketones are above 8 and glucose is below 50 is when it’s time to break the fast. You should be ok with high ketones and bg of 71. But keep an eye on your numbers. And of course stop if you are feeling really unwell. Your body will tell you that your are doing something wrong. But I don’t think you reached the danger zone.
Oh wow I had the same thing happen to me today. I had coffee after a month of IF and I felt very sick and almost lost consciousness
Great content Dr berg.... I've faced this question many times
Found your channel after I had a blood sugar test that came back at 5.8 so I took action started the keto diet about a week ago with 2 meals a day no snacks and 16 hour fasting my ketones are measuring about 5 mmol/dl and my blood sugar fasting has already dropped to 5.6 so hopefully I can shed some belly fat and keep it up thank you for your informative content it's a godsend

If ketones are detected in urine , it means you are not using them as fuel , i.e, you aren't " ketone sensitive" and are then emitting them in urine .Ketone sensitivety can take months to occur .
I love Germany. Very intelligent people.🌹🇭🇲💃

I have to say. I was almost running out the door looking for a doctor when I saw my ketones levels at 6.5 in my day 6 of fasting. My boyfriend stoped me with this videos. And is totally true that when I look in internet what you mentioned is all I could find. Not really helpful and accurate information related to ketones and fasting.
I’m a little bit scared, this is my first time. And was sleeping afraid of nit waiking up in the morning 😬

phew! I’ve just read some of these scary reports as my ketones are at 6.5 at the moment! As per usual, I came an checked in with you! ps I am not diabetic, but on hour 62 of my fast :)
Thank you Dr.berg As a type one diabetic for five years I’ve learned a lot from your videos. I had some level of dka When I was first diagnosed…
Was hospitalized for three days as a result of test to confirm if I was diabetic and to take care of keton issues
I’ve lost 21 pounds over the course of about five months before diagnosis without realizing that I was losing weight
That's great information to know Dr.Berg Thank you - makes sense🤔
I knew you would have the answer Dr Berg. I am doing intermittent fasting and exercising with great results. I had urine sample taken (for “possible, but wasn’t UTI) tests results show ketone values at 40 and they are calling it abnormal. I am completely healthy in every way, blood work fantastic and my Dr says he shows medical students EKG because it’s amazing. So, before I got shook over the ketone situation, I came here. Thank you as always Dr Berg!
I have been on the back low-carb diet for a week now. Previously, I lost 52 pounds and now this week with adding in intermittent fasting I am down another 10 pounds. I’m so glad I stumbled upon your video. It has been relatively easy. I cut out all sugars I have been a type two diabetic for 20 years. My sugars are now at 95 in the morning a week ago. They were 150 in the morning. I should weigh around 175 which means I need to lose another 65 pounds but I think it’s doable with this intermittent fasting. Thanks so much. Love your videos.
Definitely benefitting from your videos. I have fasted as a Christian but never for dieting purposes. I am losing weight, I am in full ketosis, I am feeling full most times and have narrowed my eating to once or twice a day. (Only in 2nd week) Love the lemon water! I am so happy with the progress and love that I don't feel like I am hungry all the time. I have a long way to go but believe it's completely doable. I have learned so much about different names for sugar so I can stay away. I have become quite the ingredients reader thanks to you. And I can't wait for 6 months to pass and get back with ya because this is life changing. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis and Hashimotios and I am finding the inflammation is decreasing a lot and very quickly and I am feeling very hopeful. Thank you Dr Berg.
Oh yeah, I just ordered your probiotics instead of the ones I am on, and gallbladder formula too. I watched a video that said it could help with my thyroid issues in losing weight. So I will give it a twirl.

My doctor is a good guy. He would probably cheer me on to continue so long as the blood lab results show proof positive results. I’m waiting until next month to get it done.
Hi Dr Berg, I was a nurse before I had 4 strokes. I went on the Keto diet and was so happy! It suited me very well. The weight just fell off of me, right up to the time I started having strokes. I had 4 major strokes in total. I loved ketosis !!! It was awesome, I wasn't hungry , my blood sugar went to 80 (456 was my high) with no meds and my weight went from 215 down to around 180 before I started having strokes. I am a nurse or was, so I was into testing and I was using a ketone meter. I have read where some people have a hard time getting into deep ketosis. I Just raced into it at times maxing out my keto mojo ketone meter. I now believe that was my mistake. I believe Ketosis is great if levels are kept below 3.0 . My experience happened around 4 years ago when there was much less information available. I am writing this in the hope that it may help someone on their journey. PS Ketosis was so good that I am going to try again at some time, right now I am still healing. Disclaimer? when I was a young man I went head first into a brick wall at 40 mph with no helmet. I received 150 stiches in my head. I was in intensive care for two months etc... I have noticed changes in my body since that time. My theory is that my body is using alternate as opposed to the primary pathway to accomplish some tasks ? So your mileage may vary.
You said you lost weight before you have 4 major strokes. What was the cause of your strokes? Did it have anything to do with keto?
I have been fasting and doing the keto diet for a straight week i have been in the "purple" on ketone test strips. My friend scared me recently when we discussed this so I ate carbs this morning. I'll be back to ketosis is a couple days. Thank you for this information! 😊

I am doing Keto eating for last 7 weeks. I believe one of my medications may have pushed my ketone too high and I ended up in ICU. I have lost 20 kilograms. This vlog has given me piece of mind that I am doing the right kind of eating. The Dr asked are you on a Keto diet and I answered yes but it is not a diet for me . It is just the way I eat normally. May I ask, are you type 1 diabetics by any chance?
That's what I'm worried about, my mom is on multiple medications and I fear ketosis will make her situation worse.

One of the biggest challenges that people who start following the keto diet face is the difficulty of producing ketones in the blood and entering ketosis.

Thanks, I'm a T2D and I just got some strips from the Walmart and tested my ketones. the color indicated "over 8.0", but I have been on the carnivore diet for about a month now, so I should be in pretty deep ketosis. I've checked my blood glucose (I just ate an hour ago) and it was 107, so I was just making sure I wasn't actually dying of diabetic ketoacidosis when google told me that I should go to a hospital immediately 😂
I'm 41 years old, dionosed with grade 3 brain cancer last March 2020 and I've been doing keto and I.F. doing my blood tests to see if I can get my glucose and ketones to ➗ and equals to 1, a therapeutic ketogenic state eg KGI
Exactly right! We have come to understand this with our T1D child. Her ketones are completely harmless on the keto diet, as long as we keep her blood sugars in normal range, which of course we are doing. She is completely healthy on the keto diet, and loving it! I wish doctors understood that keto is good for T1D people of all ages, whether old or young. Thanks for this good video Dr. Berg!! 💯💯💯💯💯
Congratulations! Nothing simple about having a child with T1d. My parents and I had a lot to deal with when I developed type 1 out of the blue as a 16yo but that was almost 40 years ago now. Keto as a decision makes management so much easier, so much more simply controllable!
Well done from someone 40 years in on that same journey.👍

For me, I found that I couldn’t do any electrolytes or supplemental minerals. I would really feel sick after taking them.
I would say my favorite part of fasting was NOT cooking, cleaning or shopping! Loved that part of it. So much more time in the day!😁
Keto acidosis typically. Typically their blood sugar is through the roof like in the 7 hundreds and their body is burning on key tones because they can't get glucose in the cells because there's no insulin in the body. If healthy ketosis your body is naturally lowering glucose instead is instead and your burning fat adaptation naturally. If it's practically the opposite of diabetes. If acidosis is high blood sugar. Healthy key toses his lower blood sugar
Great breakdown (pardon the pun)...my new pcp ordered labs and I just checked in patient portal "abnormal" ketone level of 5. It will be interesting to hear his response. Normal pH and overall pretty perfect labs at 59. I'm hoping he understands this, seems like a smart doc. We'll see
I'm 63M, 195cm, currently 105.6kg, started at 132kg. I hit a plateau with my weight loss recently, decided (with some further investigation) to 'clean' my fast. I've added in ACV at 30ml x 3 times per day with water, extended my fast (I'm at 110 hours as of now). Ketones are at 4.8. I was a little concerned, so relieved following this video. I'm using my body to tell me when to end the fast, though I plan to do a 7-8 day, which should last me for a month or two. I normally follow OMAD or OMEOD. Thank you for your guidance, Dr Berg.
Yeah, I'm about 104 hours in to a water fast and I'm reading at about 5 mg/dl. I was under the impression I should be higher after 4 days.
As always. Thank you Dr. Berg. Invaluable information... for free??? 🙏. You've helped me change my body, mind and life. I'm forever grateful.
This video helped me, it was just what I was wondering. I am on a 14 day fast. I am on day 9 and my ketones are running 3.0. I am also a Diabetic 2.
What was your avg blood sugar during fast?
Thanks a lot for this video. Most searches were telling me to basically let my next of kin know that my ketone level was sitting at 5.5mmol and my time was up. One meal a day + exercise for a few months triggered it. Never felt better. Of course, my doctor wants to put me on a statin for my cholesterol despite having lost 20kgs and feeling amazing.
😂😂😂 keep going Bill!
the doctors in emergency room told me that ketones 8 and blood glucose 40 is starvation ketoacidosis and it is dangerous because at night when fasting the blood glucose could drop even further and you could pass out. Especially at the beginning of fat adaptation it can happen that after a fast, ketones could go over 8 and blood glucose drops to 20-30 and it is dangerous. I have been hospitalised because this happened to me with starvation ketoacidosis and the danger is real especially if one also exercise in a fasted state the lactate could rise and there are other acids in the blood that can make the situation worse. They gave me insulin and glucose to stop the ketoacidosis and it took a couple of days to recover. I was still fasting as I was not hugry. Ketones and fasting can be addictive so one has to be careful considering why and how long to fast depending on body reserves and type of illness. I am not diabetic I was fasting to help me to fight inflammation and to cope with Autism and ADHD symptoms...
Why didn't you just eat something rather than go to the hospital? Have a handful of nuts.
Many experts advise against exercise during a fast.
It seems that light exercise such as walking, that does not raise one's heart rate above 120 beats per minute, is the way on prolonged fasting, as heavy exercise is a stressor that releases Cortisol, which leads to a release of Insulin, which in turn stops the body using fat for fuel. Heavy exercise and HIIT is OK and beneficial when doing IF less than 36 hours. Ketoacidosis is a condition that people with Diabetes may find themselves in, as opposed to Nutritional Ketosis, which is where most people strive to achieve.
well done
Thanks for for your video and my ketones where 3.6 and all the internet states I should be worried
This was exactly the information I needed to confidently continue my water fast as my gki is currently 1.2 with blood glucose 72 and ketones 3.1. The sudden increase in ketones was alarming to me. Just 2 1/2 hours ago my ketones were at 2.5. I am on day 4 of the fast and feeling amazing and don’t want to stop if nothing is wrong. I am still curious about electrolytes though. I have been taking in himalayan salt, magnesium at night and some melatonin is all. Consuming just two cups of black coffee in the am.
My blood sugar is fine and I feel great I’ve been hitting the gym, eating about 3500 calories of eggs sausage and beef every day. I have 8.8 mmol of ketones.
I’ve been experimenting with IF and extended water fasts for years now. I’m still surprised by how much fear there is around even skipping meals and the lack of education about what happens to the body in the fasted state. I love fasting! It has saved my life many times - I have Hashimotos and ME so my body actually prefers to be in the fasted state ❤
Awesome. Glad to know that you love fasting. Stay safe and healthy!
Better yet, don’t ask an MD ANYTHING- you’re better off talking to a wall.
Hey my doctor. I need formulas. for my. How to height posture ? Because i am 160cm. And 30 years. I need 180cm sir. Please help answer me
I made a doctor mad once when I told him “the further I stay away from a doctor, the healthier I am!” That’s been my motto for my entire life!
