    In this video, we’re going to talk about ketones and fasting.
    Are high ketones during fasting dangerous?
    There’s a lot of confusion about the difference between nutritional ketosis and diabetic ketoacidosis.
    Mainstream medicine often doesn’t differentiate between these types of ketosis. Without this differentiation, you might be worried about being in ketosis.
    Ketoacidosis is a serious health concern and can even lead to coma and death.
    Ketones in the urine can be a sign of a medical emergency when it comes to ketoacidosis-not with nutritional ketosis.
    There are 12 levels of ketosis. Levels 1 to 5 are where most nutritional ketosis and intermittent fasting take place. Levels 6 to 8 are where your body might be if you’re doing prolonged fasting. After level 9, your body is in ketoacidosis. This isn’t the level of ketosis that happens on a Healthy Keto diet. Ketoacidosis primarily happens to diabetics who don’t take the right amount of insulin.
    In summary, ketoacidosis is very different from nutritional ketosis. While one is hazardous to your health, the other can help improve your health and support a healthy body.
    If you’re new to keto, check out the other videos on my channel to learn more about it!

    I have experienced this… asked my Dr if the keto diet is the way to go- her response was immediately “ diabetics go into ketosis as they are dying, why would you want to put yourself in that state?” Now I’m not a medical professional in any capacity, but immediately I thought to myself “but I’m not diabetic”. I just said ok. Started Keto and fasting -lost weight. Went back to her 6mon later, blood panel was beautiful and she asked what I did to make the changes. I told her and she was speechless. That made me realize one must take control of their health by doing one’s own research in these issues.

      Is a ketone level of 80 mg/dl okay on a keto diet if you have just fasted for 24 hours? I have been on a keto diet for 16 days, often do Omad and eat 20-30 grams of carbs.

    The difference is:
    Nutritional Ketosis - High ketone levels with normal/low blood glucose levels.
    Diabetic Ketoacidosis - Very high ketone levels with very high blood glucose levels (the combination is deadly).
    I am currently on day 32 of a 40 day water-only fast and have ketone levels of 8.2 mmol/L and blood glucose of 3.0 mmol/L. I feel absolutely great! This experience truly has been life changing! :)

    I’m a nurse practitioner. I encourage my patients to fast. I’ve supervised many prolonged water fasts and there has never been an incident of ketoacidosis. Every single fast has been a success. Fasting is one of the healthiest interventions for most disease processes. Ketosis and fasting are not the same but you will be in ketosis while fasting. ❤

      How long were those fasts? I’m healthy but I’m afraid that if I do a fast longer than 5 days will put my ketone levels at 10+ when I’m already at almost 7 after 4 days. I wanna do 21 days of water fast but I’m scared my ketone levels will be 10+. How do you prevent that or do ketone levels not depend on length of fast?

    • @coachcicely908
      @coachcicely908 2 місяці тому +1

      One thing I read about how to lower your ketone levels if they get too high is to drink enough water to flush the ketones out. But also make sure you get your electrolytes back in. You can do this by adding a little lemon (real lemon, not reconstructed) to your water, or sea salt-celtic sea salt has more minerals than Himalayan- or electrolytes you can purchase; just check the sugar content.
      And remember. Every "body" is different. Instead of getting scared, get curious about what your body is telling you. For instance, if you get a headache it could mean you need more water and/or more electrolytes.
      Hope this helps and you continue enjoying your fasting journey.😎👍

    Thanks Doc. I had a scare the other day. Im on day 18 of a water/tea fast(with electrolytes and sodium) My ketones normally float around 5. Now Im not much of a coffee drinker but had 3 cups the other day while in a meeting for the first time in years. I check my ketones that evening with keto-mojo and it just registered as "HI", I thought that was weird so I measured again, same thing. I go and look it up and it stops registering over 8.0 so I knew I was at least that high. Then I check my blood glucose, it ran down to 71. Started freaking out at that moment as from what i seen, below 70 is dangerous territory, Im not diabetic but everything I was reading was I was entering into ketoacidosis. I felt amazing but wasn't sure what to believe. I took a few grams of carbs to get my blood glucose back up to 80. Never an issue till I started drinking coffee. So yesterday I tried one cup of coffee as I am really curious what's going on with me. Measured that evening again ketones were 7.0 and blood sugar was 74. blood pressure 121/72. Still feel great. This video help to reassure Im doing OK.

    • @lenaeschneider9596
      @lenaeschneider9596 Рік тому

      I had a similar scare this morning. I am on Day 4 of a 5 day water fast, Keto-Mojo meter showed my ketones as a flashing "HI", and blood glucose at 64. I feel perfectly fine but the "HI" reading freaked me out a bit. (Dr Google would have me believe that death is imminent lol!). I found this video, and am once again reassured by Dr Berg that all is well. Big shout out to Dr Berg for all the accurate, free health information - he is my go-to guy and has helped me regain my health and a normal BMI after a toxic work environment.

      I just watched two videos today that said it’s when ketones are above 8 and glucose is below 50 is when it’s time to break the fast. You should be ok with high ketones and bg of 71. But keep an eye on your numbers. And of course stop if you are feeling really unwell. Your body will tell you that your are doing something wrong. But I don’t think you reached the danger zone.

    I have to say. I was almost running out the door looking for a doctor when I saw my ketones levels at 6.5 in my day 6 of fasting. My boyfriend stoped me with this videos. And is totally true that when I look in internet what you mentioned is all I could find. Not really helpful and accurate information related to ketones and fasting.

I had urine sample taken (for “possible, but wasn’t UTI) tests results show ketone values at 40 and they are calling it abnormal. I have been on the back low-carb diet for a week now. Previously, I lost 52 pounds and now this week with adding in intermittent fasting I am down another 10 pounds. I’m so glad I stumbled upon your video. It has been relatively easy. I cut out all sugars I have been a type two diabetic for 20 years. My sugars are now at 95 in the morning a week ago. They were 150 in the morning. I should weigh around 175 which means I need to lose another 65 pounds but I think it’s doable with this intermittent fasting. Thanks so much. Love your videos.

I am losing weight, I am in full ketosis, I am feeling full most times and have narrowed my eating to once or twice a day. (Only in 2nd week) Love the lemon water! I am so happy with the progress and love that I don't feel like I am hungry all the time. I have a long way to go but believe it's completely doable. I have learned so much about different names for sugar so I can stay away. I have become quite the ingredients reader thanks to you. And I can't wait for 6 months to pass and get back with ya because this is life changing. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis and Hashimotios and I am finding the inflammation is decreasing a lot and very quickly and I am feeling very hopeful. Thank you Dr Berg.

    Hi Dr Berg, I was a nurse before I had 4 strokes. I went on the Keto diet and was so happy! It suited me very well. The weight just fell off of me, right up to the time I started having strokes. I had 4 major strokes in total. I loved ketosis !!! It was awesome, I wasn't hungry , my blood sugar went to 80 (456 was my high) with no meds and my weight went from 215 down to around 180 before I started having strokes. I am a nurse or was, so I was into testing and I was using a ketone meter. I have read where some people have a hard time getting into deep ketosis. I Just raced into it at times maxing out my keto mojo ketone meter. I now believe that was my mistake. I believe Ketosis is great if levels are kept below 3.0 . My experience happened around 4 years ago when there was much less information available. I am writing this in the hope that it may help someone on their journey. PS Ketosis was so good that I am going to try again at some time, right now I am still healing. Disclaimer? when I was a young man I went head first into a brick wall at 40 mph with no helmet. I received 150 stiches in my head. I was in intensive care for two months etc... I have noticed changes in my body since that time. My theory is that my body is using alternate as opposed to the primary pathway to accomplish some tasks ? So your mileage may vary.

    Keto acidosis typically. Typically their blood sugar is through the roof like in the 7 hundreds and their body is burning on key tones because they can't get glucose in the cells because there's no insulin in the body. If healthy ketosis your body is naturally lowering glucose instead is instead and your burning fat adaptation naturally. If it's practically the opposite of diabetes. If acidosis is high blood sugar. the doctors in emergency room told me that ketones 8 and blood glucose 40 is starvation ketoacidosis and it is dangerous because at night when fasting the blood glucose could drop even further and you could pass out. Especially at the beginning of fat adaptation it can happen that after a fast, ketones could go over 8 and blood glucose drops to 20-30 and it is dangerous. I have been hospitalised because this happened to me with starvation ketoacidosis and the danger is real especially if one also exercise in a fasted state the lactate could rise and there are other acids in the blood that can make the situation worse. They gave me insulin and glucose to stop the ketoacidosis and it took a couple of days to recover. I was still fasting as I was not hugry. Ketones and fasting can be addictive so one has to be careful considering why and how long to fast depending on body reserves and type of illness. I am not diabetic I was fasting to help me to fight inflammation and to cope with Autism and ADHD symptoms...

      @hanwachtel 5 місяців тому

      It seems that light exercise such as walking, that does not raise one's heart rate above 120 beats per minute, is the way on prolonged fasting, as heavy exercise is a stressor that releases Cortisol, which leads to a release of Insulin, which in turn stops the body using fat for fuel. Heavy exercise and HIIT is OK and beneficial when doing IF less than 36 hours. Ketoacidosis is a condition that people with Diabetes may find themselves in, as opposed to Nutritional Ketosis, which is where most people strive to achieve.
