French Canadian here, you scared me at first with the english butchering french accent, I was prepared to cringe the whole video 😅. Turns-out your TRUE English is music à mes oreilles. great video! can't wait to see where this is going!
Developer experience is so overlooked when developing games, you the developer have to come first, make it fun, make it relaxing, make it as stress free as you can

Awesome if you're the 100th sub! That's something I will remember! I saw you got a devlog channel as well, going to check that 😎! Thank you for the kind words ❤
Belle vidéo! J'adore bien quand d'autres solo-dev partagent leur processus, ça me pousse/m'inspire à travailler après mon 5 à 7. You should introduce yourself a bit though, like name/nickname, you gave more of an intro to your music producer than yourself :D
I would have never guessed that you are French. Nice to know, neighbor. I'm Swiss. Theoretically, the lighthouses stand next to dangerous areas to tell ships that they shouldn't go there. If it is so far inside the island, it defeats the purpose. But I guess if you put smaller lights at the more dangerous points around the island then it would probably work again. Anyways. I'm really impressed by the progress you did. It takes a lot of drive to keep working on it for that long. But not only the things you did for the game. The editing was great and doing the entire video in a foreign language is also impressive. I look forward to where the game is going. I like the concept and your presentation style.
My exposure to English speakers that are French is limited, but your vocabulary choice is so similar to my only French friend’s vocabulary. It’s very endearing!
I love it when I find a new devlog channel. Good stuff. I'd suggest to break up the video timeline so people can pick a certain section. A 30 minute video is hard to get into. When I know roughly what topics are coming, or what it looks like, I'm more likely to engage. Keep up the good work though, it's looking promising.
This game looks super cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love pirate themed games and I love this creative take on it, you are super talented in game dev but your video skills could use some work haha but I subscribed I am excited
Love that your inspiration comes from final fantasy 9! I see it a lot , down the line once you have the city to your liking so throw a reference to game , maybe the tantulus crew or a small theater for I want to be your canary .. that would be awesome. Anyways I subscribed look forward to your next video. I covered a lot I suggest make it more compressed , 15 mins or so .
wow this is really cool! the fact that you modeled everything yourself is impressive. especially the npcs. i thought maybe you were using an asset pack at first 😂 i've been using Blender for years and have only recently tried my hand at game dev in UE5. i can tell that you've put a lot of work into this project. looking forward to following along with your progress 😊
some "One Piece" world building, Love the idea and the game looks awsome, cant wait to see more updates, just keep them coming, the Algorithm will pick it up eventually :) wish u the best
Hello there! Thank you for your kind message, means a lot. I'll release the Devlog #1 this months, hope to see you around and good luck for your own projects!
Awesome start! I like the name and city building angle. Check out the youtube video "Why pirate games keep failing". It looks at different pirate games, and explains what the good ones have in common, that sense of freedom.
I have watched the video you mentionned and I cannot agree more. What I tell you if I didn't choose the title of the game for nothing, freedom is crutial ;)
Very good video! I like your humorous attitude, keep it up! I just started trying game development and it is difficult, so it is very impressive how you learned all of those 3D-designing techniques from the ground up. And all of those NPC's are quite impressive too! You did not mention anything about your coding background. Did you also learn that yourself or did you have experience because of your job or something similar? And which program do you use for coding the game? Sorry for all of these questions. Greatings and good luck!
Awesome, thanks for your kind words! I wrote some of your questions and will cover them in the next devlog ;) For the software, this is Unreal Engine 5 and the coding I used for the scene is Blueprint. I'll talk more about it next time!
Hey man, cool stuff. Not sure if anyone said it yet but you don't need to "explode" the mesh as you're doing here to get good bakes, there's some options in the substance painter baker that allows you to bake based on mesh names, if you name your lowpoly meshes something like _low and highpoly like _high you could use that option, however, it could be a little wonky/finicky to texture stuff thats hidden behind other objects since you're using a more shared texturemap between the different clothes.
@@FreedomIsPiracy maybe, both ways are correct and sort of situational i guess, but could work really well whenever you create weapons or have either intersecting or close to intersecting geometry, like beams, textiles in marketstands for example
This was a very relatable video, I feel your struggles about level design, its so painful not knowing what exactly you want and the bad looking blockouts, its a painful process
ayo why not have them be toys, if it makes it easier to model, that sounds like a cool twist, have a toy story undertone to the game, but The biggest lesson from the Anime I saw all around this video was One Piece, and One Piece is a lesson for all media on how to balance goofiness with serious tones, and I think you can achieve this very easily with this game, but I think it could be fine if the characters look like toys. Also I love the Pirate theme, and I love One Piece, a Pirate One Piece like game is a game that could take hours upon days from my time if done right. But there are many things you have to consider with your games, and there are some things that are still not clear, or it may be too early right now. Is this a 1st or 3rd person game? Will it Have Multiplayer? How will the combat feel? (as in what are you closely trying to replicate) Will it be open world or have a semi-open world? Will there be crafting elements? will it have Fishmen? Devil Fruits? and crazy Islands? the better question is how much inspiration are you taking from shows like One Piece, or movies like Pirates of The Caribbean? how will Sailing feel? what are the monsters and fish lurking in the seas and skies? Will you add a Sky island? please Also how can I help make your game a reality, since this video shows that you are a very competent developer/artist and you like to challenge yourself with things you are not familiar with. All I can do is write quests, or npc backgrounds, and maybe try to flesh out smaller lore bits, your game sounds amazing.
To answer some of those questions, I invite you to watch the new devlog who released this week. Then I suggest you to jump in the discord and ask your question there, I will love to answer and talk about this fascinating topic! Love your comment!
Hello there, I made my textures look as I want iterations after iterations. I kept reimporting textures until I was ok. Not the best workflow I'm afraid haha
Yooo, One Piece and Final Fantasy are my favorites! I'm looking forward to following your progress. Don't worry about your accent/vocabulary. What engine are you using?
Hello, I noticed that the crowds in your game don't exactly move very fluidly. There's a technique called Continuum Crowds that should fix that problem. It's a super old solution and there are probably better ones than it now, but it's a good place to start. There are open source repositories that demonstrate it so it should be pretty straightforward to implement if you're interested
Hello there, thanks for the tip, indeed the crowd needs some avoidance and better movement. At first, I didn't plan to make NPC but I couldn't show the city without some life.. I'll keep that in my head when we will tackle crowd system!
Wow, this is very impressive! One thing that I would recommend is that the skybox does not fit the direction of your art style. In my own game dev experience creating a uniquely styled skybox was one of the main thing that locks in the feel of the game. My experience with Unreal 5 is limited, but in Godot I was able to find a lot of helpful resources that made creating a unique skybox possible for even an inexperienced developer like myself.
Interesting, could you explain a bit more your thoughts about it? You have in mind the sky or more the clouds? Too detailed, not enough? Thank you for your kind words. Don't hesitate to share cool Godot videos! See you around!
@@FreedomIsPiracy To me, the skybox seemed too realistic compared to the art direction of your 3d models. I think it would benefit from being a lot less realistic.
Please add Cosmic horror element in your game, like you can add some enemy faction similar to xenomorphs, necromorphs, tyranids and bugs from starship troopers.
looks quite cool! suggestion: make shorter devlogs. especially with first devlogs, people aren't willing to invest 30 minutes in watching about a game they don't know about yet. I would suggest 5-15 minutes. This game looks very high-quality and it would be a shame if the long watch times turned people away from it.
@@FreedomIsPiracy Let me explain, since I think there is actually a good argument to NOT make story driven games. I'll try to keep it short. When a game revolves around a story, the amount of time that a player is expected to spend on completing the game is directly corelated to the length of the provided story, which in most cases tends to be around 40-80 ish hours for single player games made by high end studio's. And for low budget games with only one developer it's probably going to be a lot shorter than that. So you're limiting the potential game time for your players by introducing a story. Once a player has completed the story arch, they basically completed (most of) the game and then stop playing it, even if there is potential for lots of replay ability in the core game play loop.
@@Saradominstr You're making points, but there is so much more to say as it depends on a lot of factors. What I can say is the game is not a corridor. As it's an Open World, you can either explore and progress or develop the story line. I want the player to have the freedom to choose what he wants to do.
