Took my neighbor and I at least an hour, probably more. thank god he has a mower lift. Taking that plate off sucks. I love this mower, but doing this belt was just way harder than it should be. My neighbor kept telling me he can do the drive belt on his John Deere "in four minutes." He also spent $4k on his JD. The CC XT1 was around $1,600, I think. Anyway, could not have done it without your video and I easily saved a couple of hundred bucks I would have spent having a shop do it. Thanks.
I agree it should be easier than taking the bottom plate off. I was trying to figure all the ways to do it and honestly to get it right you need to take that plate off or you’re guessing where things may go. The John Deere L100 series tractors you have to pull the steering column up, which means you have to take off a bottom steering gear and I have done many more of those and this one is definitely where a little more patience is needed. I’m glad you got the job done and you did save yourself many $$$. Please give this video alike and share my channel to help it grow. It would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for watching.
Thanks for the video. I could not have done the job without it. That said - that spring is a bear to unhook/rehook from beneath the tractor! After removing the mower deck, I raised the tractor up on a floor jack and jack stands. The spring hook on the tractor is almost impossible to see while on one’s back under the machine. Thankfully, my wife was able to see it and guide me through the unhook/hook steps. A hoist would have helped a lot. Nevertheless, the job is done and the tractor works fine.

Enjoyed the learning moment Brad, tractor is doing great, but the drought is messed up the grass, and working the tractor on clean up around outside the house,I'll catch ya on the next one.

6:02 that (brake?) rod seems to be missing from my used XT2. I pulled it apart yesterday before seeing this video. Is it some kind of mechanical brake? I still need to have the brake pedal pressed before I can start the engine, but I guess that's due to the switch that's likely still being pushed, even without that rod installed.
Hopefully this helps me figure out what messed up with putting the plate back on and why the clutch pedal is all sloppy now and something, maybe linkage or that spring, is rattling. My drive belt somehow slipped off the engine pulley. When i removed the 6 screws holding that plate, and tugged on the plate to pull it down, it had tension on it and it twisted at an angle a little bit, but only dropped down 1.5-2 inches, enough that i could see that everything looked lined up. Like, the belt was around the pulleys correctly. Once i used the impact to remove that bolt for the engine pulley(s) i was able to drop it down enough to put the pulley back on. But all i did to get some slack was push the clutch pedal down and that gave me enough slack to put belt back around the engine pulley. Then i tightened the bolt back. But now when i try to put the plate back on, the holes aren't lining up for the screws. I have the plate up against the frame , yet the holes are still slightly off, like the plate holes need to still go up higher to line up with frame holes, but there's no gaps, it's plate on frame. And somehow the clutch pedal is all janky now. It's all making clanks and pops. And isn't smooth when i push it. i noticed the cable with the spring along the frame rail, and it's drooping and floppy. Wasn't like that before i removed the plate. So now from watching this i hope to analyze and figure out what happened.
Normally it is age of the machine. Some of the of time, something will get thrown up into the belt , branch, etc. Towing heavy and driving on major hills will also shorten the life of the belt. In normal use, the signs are major cracks in the belt.
I did it! It was the Extension Spring that broke. I just jacked up the back tire a couple inches and felt my way under the tractor for the hoop and wrestled it onto the hook. Now my tractor moves forward and back like God intended it. Thank you for the video!
Do you have a video on how to replace the transmission belt on a poulan XT mower or something just like that model the model number is pxt195g42 I'm having the transmission belt keep jumping off
I do not at this time. Most of the time when a transmission belt keeps coming off, you either have the incorrect belt or a belt guide is missing or not adjusted correctly.
When I go to take the 5/8 bolt off the front pulley to drop it down it spins the pulley for the transmission belt. I don't have tension the belt moves left and right and spins the transmission pulley.

I broke my mower taking it apart and bent parts. Then I hit it with a sledgehammer. I hate mowers. I hate belt driven mowers. In the 70s and 80s they had chains. I just want to throw it in the dumpster and mow with a tractor. The belt guards cut the belts on this mower. Flawed design. It will happen again and agian.
It makes me ill how quickly and easily you did that. I lost my religion doing this. That clutch rod was awful going back in. Kept falling out of the slot in the back as soon as I had it close. Also, mine is an XT2 and has the mag clutch and the motor pulley is different from what you have here. My mag clutch slid off fine but the motor drive pulley would not come off. It was rust welded on. I almost destroyed it trying to get it off. If I could’ve gotten it off I would’ve replaced it. But I bent the upper flange down real bad trying to get it off. Had to beat it back up. In hindsight: if that pulley won’t budge, don’t pry it. Just remove the 4 motor bolts and slide the motor aft and you’ll have enough clearance to get the new belt on. Thanks for the video. Very helpful
I have been there with the engine pulley not coming down and did exactly what you did. Move the engine. The factory screw that one up by not putting a anti-seize on the shaft before install. Yes, big pain in the ***

Good job. Lifting the mower seems to help a lot. I did this job and only raised the mower about half that far and it was a pretty rough install.
tks for the simple straightforward approach. well done.

I’m glad you were successful!! That job was a pain and I’m disappointed in the way it was designed. Thank you for sharing.
Outstanding video. It made changing out my drive belt a snap! Thank you so much.

What are some of the tell-tale signs you need to replace the transmission belt? Do you see more belt failures on higher hour mowers?

Ok this is the video i need but what does a man do if I don't have one of those lifts?

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines thanks for the info on this matter of the transmission belt Brad 👍✌️👌

If you do not have a impact gun I would suggest borrow one or you will need to hold the pulley somehow to get the bolt out.
Thank you!

I have been looking and can’t find in my manual or online the size of that damn belt
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Easier than with the electric clutch. I had to build a special wrench to hold the hub so I could torque the bolt into the motor shaft.
