We've all experienced them at work, at school, in the military, and other places in life. How do you deal with people who have been put in positions of power, but who simply don't have the ability to be a good leader?
If there are any topics you want discussed in future videos. Please comment below!
I liked what you said, it's really insightful!!! You have some realy good advice on how to make it through many situations!!!! Plus, I've watched your Drill Instructor videos, they're fun to watch!!!! And, yes, I subscribed to your channel!!! Semper Fi right back to you!! OOH RAHH!!!!!
OOH RAH! Thank you Joe.
Nicolas, I would want to meet you
Do u know anything about the Marines and them eating crayons?
@@SSGTNICHOLS I wanna see Andrew Stevens inspire recruits.
Old Corps., here. Enlisted in June of 65, three days after graduating from high school. After PI was sent to Lejuene and joined 3/6. Was all good until we got a new platoon Sergeant, who will remain nameless. Just had something against me and busted my chops every chance he got. Always seemed to get weekend duty or denial of a 72 hour pass to “swoop” home to see my girl. When my friends made corporal, I stayed a L/Cpl for another eight months before making E4. Getting orders to Vietnam was a relief to me because I would never see that piece of shit again. Or so I thought! Served with some real NCO’s in Nam. Encouraged me and taught me and brought out my leadership skills.
Survived 13 months as a Marine Dog Handler with various infantry units in the 1st. MarDiv. Made E5 and came back with Bronze Star w/V, 2 Purple Hearts,Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and Combat Action Ribbon as personal awards. My last 60 days in the Marines was back at Lejuene attached to a Casual Company waiting to be discharged. I am at the PX one day and guess who I run into? That prick E5 who hated me. I am wearing four rows of ribbons and strutting my stuff. Somehow he had still not gone overseas yet. I introduced my self asking if he remembered me. He replied in the affirmative. I looked him in the eye and told him he was the worst NCO I had ever met and if he had a problem with that to look me up after hours and we’ll go at it. He turned and walked away.
After I got out I went to college, earned two degrees and had a great career in the corporate world. I had one rule; always treat the people under me with encouragement and respect. It’s amazing how people can live up to their potential when treated right. Old Corps signing out. Semper Fi.
Thank you for your service to our great country.
True
Great philosophy.
AMEN

I’m not in the military, but this is strong words for anyone dealing with shitty leadership and just life in general. Thank you all for your service and dedication. God Bless!
Thank you! OOH RAH!
Hey SSGT Nichols! Man I wish I saw this a year ago because I had terrible leadership at work with a lack of gratitude. I ended up leaving that job and things just fell in place. It was like I woke up. Went through many things as described in the video. Amazing how God works in mysterious ways. Bad leaders end up self destructing after their mask is cracked. Anyway, great video, love your channel and how you incorporate faith. Thanks bud and Semper Fi !! 🙌
Sergeant Nichols for president
Amen.
Leadership has never been about who has control. It is about finding a way to unleash the potential of those around you.
OOH RAH! These are wise words!
Semper Fi! I did my time as an 0311 in 2/5 Golf Company and went to Fallujah, Ramadi, and Karma, during the troop surge in 2007. I love what you have to say about leadership. I dealt with terrible leaders. I dealt with guys who would go out looking for their Combat Action Ribbon and that we’re in leadership positions. When I went through Boot Camp in 2005, most Drill Instructors didn’t take the time to teach morality, leadership, and the military definition of integrity. They taught kill, kill, kill. But during the surge, they really didn’t have time to teach us too much else. I really enjoy seeing how even though you were training recruits that were ultimately going to combat, in these videos, I actually see you interacting with them from a point of love, respect, and a sense of duty to God, Corps, and Country. It’s AWE inspiring! It’s Marines like YOU that taught Marines like ME how to get home. SEMPER FI and keep up the good work killer!
The timing of this video coming out is impeccable.
OOH RAH!
Never even seriously thought of being in the military, just been in a pretty "pointless" rut after failing/getting screwed by a workplace rat. I come back to vids like these for inspiration, as I feel rather down at the moment. Thanks for the video.
Keep pushing forward James. Never quit even during the times when you're down and in a rut. OOH RAH!
You should join I have 3 month to finish my electrical trade school and then im probably shipping out in August. If you do join I recommend you to study for the asvab I got to high and mighty in my thoughts and thought I would do fine but me forgetting I am one who has to study to do well...I passed but didnt do as good as I wanted...fuck me hahaha
Take some time and figure out what you're passionate about doing in life and would love to wake up to and do for the next 5, 10, 20, 30 years. Then set 3 goals - short term, medium term, and long term. Then you just start working towards that short term goal. I had to work for 11 years in the medical field, running around, breaking a sweat EVERY shift, over-worked and underpaid, as they say. Took 11 years of getting berated, patients hating seeing me (I did the blood draws starting at 4 AM in the hospital), getting yelled at by Dr's, and so on in order to get the dream job I wanted. But it's SO worth it, even more-so now that I know what obstacles I had to overcome and push past in order to get a career (NOT the job, but CAREER) that pays well, bought me my first house, and gave me a wife and 2 beautiful kids.
Stay MOTIVATED, "hug the cactus" when times get tough (embrace the difficulties, don't shy away from them), and it WILL pay off!
First saw your videos 4.5 years ago, and now ive been in the Marine Corps for 3.5 years now. Even though I never met you I have looked up to you, thank you SSGT.
OOH RAH! Thank you.
I sent this vid to my son. He's going thru hard time with an NCO like your Gunny. My son's an E4 trying to get his stripes all others got there's but this one NCO is holding him back
Thank you Thomas. All the best for your son. I hope it works out for him and bad leadership does not derail his career. OOH RAH!
too easy just tell him to simply out pt his ass...they dont like that that means they cant use their rank and makes them have to work harder 😀
The timing of this video upload could not have been any better. Thank you once again Ssgt.
OOH RAH! Thank you!
I was just about to post this same thing. I don't know how the youtube algorithm pointed me to this guy whose videos I've never watched before, but it's exactly what I needed to hear right now. Thank you ssgt Nichols, you just got me out a really negative place.
@@SSGTNICHOLS I remember you from your days in MWSS-171 as a LCpl, I was a Sgt at the time. Speaking from a former Drill Instructor's point of view I think what you do in these videos is awesome. Keep up the good work inspiring Marines and civilians alike to become good successful people. God bless and Semper Fidelis. MSgt USMC/Retired.
“Don’t give them the pleasure of watching you walk away with your head down.” That hit me hard because I’m going through this at my job right now. As a former Marine myself, hearing a Drill Instructor’s advice carries a lot of weight for me. Thank you for the push I needed today. Semper Fidelis and God bless you SSGT
Ssgt Nichols, you are a true leader. God gifted you to do the job you did for the Marine Corps. Thank you for your service sir. God Bless you.!
Accurate video. Experienced numerous bad leadership in the Fleet. Mostly First SGTs out for themselves. Only cared about the welfare of the troops when an officer was around.
Thank you Mark. I totally understand your experience and can relate.
thank you Ssgt Nichols I'm not in the Marine corps but Army infantry but it really helped me
OOH RAH! Thank you for your service to the Army and the country!
SSGT. Nichols, you're still changing lives.... these are great words, and they're appreciated!
Yes,I was reflecting this morning about how my whole life has been run by bad leaders.
Meet him at the VA in San Diego. A real stand up guy. Subscribed.
OOH RAH! Thank you.
I'm an Army man! Marines like you make me proud!
Piss poor leadership results in piss poor results especially in a combat zone
Very true Albert!
I had a toxic squad leader in the Army but thank God I had an awesome First Sergeant and a CO and XO with Ranger tabs that were simply outstanding leaders. 20 years out I've learned bad leaders come in all different forms. It's just an unfortunate evil in life. If you're lower management or just an old hand with experience help insulate the younger people from bad leaders because they'll potentially reiterate the same type of leadership down the road, causing more unnecessary grief.
I served directly with this Marine at Camp Pendleton and Iraq from 2006 to 2007. He’s the real deal and a tremendous leader! I learned so much from him! Semper Fidelis!
I thought it was the guy from A-ha.
SSGT Nicolas thank you for telling us about dealing with bad leaders in our lives including my life especially when the enemy come to do three things steal kill and destroy
OOH RAH! Thank you Dion.
I just got to 29 palms with my first unit. Really needed to hear this SSgt.
OOH RAH Nate! Give it your all and all the best with your military career!
@@SSGTNICHOLS Thanks SSgt. Continue to do great things, keep up the good content.
I needed to hear that! Thank you!
Thanks man dealing with toxic leader currently
Keep pushing forward. Eventually the toxic leader moves out of your life.
Poor leaders motivated me for sure I'll be picking up Sgt in about 3 months. This video came in my life with great timing 💯💯💯
OOH RAH! Thank you. And congratulations on promoting to Sgt. All the best with your career!
Aye aye ssgt thanks for the motivational insight, marine vet here love the videos it’s a great reflection to see and remember the transformation. I also can’t help but laugh as well thank you for what you do.
Just came across this, great words of wisdom and thank you for sharing.
Thank you for sharing! 🇺🇸
Thanks Ssgr. That was some great advice. Thanks for sharing your experiences and life lessons from the Corps.
SEMPER FI!
I respect and admire Mr Nichols
Thank you.
Well said. Thank you for your service.
SSgt thank you for the words of encouragement. I've been surrounded by good people in my life to know what a bad leader looks like and I subconsciously followed up with what you recommended we do. After watching this video you showed me that there were no regrets in my decision and that it's never too late as long as you never quit. Stay healthy and motivated. Oorah!
OOH RAH! Thank you Edgar and keep staying motivated. Trust your good instincts and have no regrets!
Thank you for these words. I have just found you I look forward to watching your videos I'm going to tell my son to watch your videos also
AWESOME DEVILDOG!!! GREAT TO SEE THAT YOU HAVE A VIDEO AS WELL
Thanks for your service!!!! MCRD 87-91. You are a true leader
Love your videos! Pure example of the NCO!
Thanks. I needed that.
Thank you for your videos Sir I've been following you for quite some time when my daughter was old enough I introduced her to you and now she wants to be a marine she is hardcore the real badass powerlifting in a high school I use your videos to motivate her when she's feeling down thank you very much for your dedication our beloved Marine Corps Semper Fi sir!!!
God Bless You SSgt! Well said! Semper Fi!
He was my Heavy Hat. Charlie Company Platoon 1010. 2001
OOH RAH!
You have spread the love you showed your Marines to all of us and many will never understand what that means. You are embedded in history again thank you
God Bless, That was one of the Most Powerful Words I’ve heard in a long time from a Man/Marine!!! I hope to meet you someday because I’ve shown some of your incredible inspiring motivational, and truly the way to become a responsible, respectful human. Some young kids now with the world were in now they’re very confused and that’s a shame. God Bless
TONS of life lessons here. Military or not. Thanks for the words of wisdom brother. Top of the line respect for ye.
Thank you for what yoy have done Ssgt. I watch your videos until this day.
Fantastic approach and words. Keep spreading strength and positivity 👊🏼
I absolutely love these nuggets of wisdom in your video, especially the part about not letting the enemy take joy in seeing you walk away with your head down. Just as you said, the enemy loves to kill, steal, and destroy. Excellent video! Thx for all you do for your Marines and fellow vets! This is applicable across all the six branches of service-Army, AF, USMC, USN, USCG, and Space Force!
I needed this now more than ever.
Keep pushing forward even in the face of adversity!
Hey SSgt, how are you. I got out in '03 but recall a real joke of a GySgt myself. Extremely inconsiderate, ex drill instructor, unapproachable attitude, you name it. In the mornings when we were all sitting in the shop eating breakfast, this gunny would take your sausage biscuit outta your hand, take a bite, hand it back, and say thanks with a wink. He was the greatest example of what not to be.
Very true. Not good form to do something like that to a fellow Marine. Thank you for sharing the story. OOH RAH!
We probably would have to fight tbh I can tolerate a lot but when it comes to my food I’m like animal I don’t play with that. He is a shitty person. I’m a newly promoted SGT I have my fair view on poor leadership especially from my combat deployment
@@dafunnyfam6724 ..yes sir he was a useless prick to the core. It didn't stop with sausage biscuits. He'd grab a few of your tater tots, even drink whatever you were having. Yeah, his mouth...on your straw...no bullshit. There were a great many people who thought very low of this guy, for good reason. Some just mentally never leave the drill field. If I was to ever meet his wife, I'd shake her hand and ask her how the hell she does it.
Thank you Staff Sergeant Nichols! It's very motivating to listen to someone I can relate to.
I know all of this. I live all of this. Just good to hear it from another. To know I'm not alone.
always respected your character and you probably won't expect this but in the civilian world, your words hold true and i take them forward to assist in my decision making and sometimes to confirm the decisions i've already made. thanks brother
Motivating Encouragement.
SEMPER FI‼️🍻
Semper Fi!
Staff Sergeant, your words inspire me as a junior Marine. You are the image of what all leaders including myself should aspire to be. Thank you and Semper Fi 🤙🏻
Thank you, SSGT.
I'm a Corporal now and I have been coming to this video for the last couple of weeks for your insight into leading.
That was a blessing. Thank you for the words of encouragement. Oorah!
I needed this.
Always coming with the facts. No bullshit. Good man
OOH RAH!
Thanks SSgt, you're an enlightened gentleman as well as a certified badass. Looking forward to your next vid.
OOH RAH! Thank you Dan!
I've been watching your videos. You are definitely the epitome of Drill Instructor. Served in 2000 to 2008. Semper Fi warrior.
Great video and words of encouragement. Thanks for doing what you do.
Thank you Jason!
Ive been out for about 11 years now, haven't talked to another Marine since really and this was actually a breath of fresh air for me. I needed to hear another Marine speak. Thanks for doing all you've done, I've got your back till the end of time Devil. ✌️👁️
You give hope to Marines that see this world crumble. You’re an outstanding Marine Staff Sergeant. Thank you
Thank you Staff Sgt. For this motivated video. This is something I needed to hear in this Devil Dogs career. Semper Fi.
OOH RAH! Thank you Leon. Semper Fi!
Great words of wisdom!! I was in the Marines back in 03 and was in an infantry battalion stationed in Kanoehe Bay 1st Battalion 3rd Marines, Weapons Company. Keep up the outstanding movational videos. Semper Fi.
SSGT Nichols, thank you sir for the encouragement. I have worked under leadership that you have described. You are so right on with this. Thank you again and for your service.
Thank you SSGT Nichols! I needed to hear that. I'm a Correctional Officer and people respect me, including the inmates. However, just like you said in this video, there are poor leadership in this field. Sometimes I, just want to quit.
I'm not going to give them the satisfaction. Once again thank you for serving our country and sharing your experience. God bless!
Watched many videos you were in and many comments from trained Marines spoke highly of you. You damn sure are a leader, sir.
Thank you man, you really inspired me
Thanks for the trip down memory lane SSgt .
Ooooh Rah!! Thank you SSGT. Please keep making these moto videos. I start my day with them! Capt S.
OOH RAH! Thank you!
Thank you for your advice and determination..As a father I teach my daughter what you guys were taught..Thank you so very much...
Ssgt Nichols.... I needed to hear this right now. Currently in a position where supervisors do nothing but complain about each other and bring moral of the department down. I got sucked into it. I just climbed out of that hole of negativity right now. I allowed it to keep me from doing my best cuz my attitude started to suffer. That ended right now. Thank you sir.
Thank you Eric. All the best with your current situation and keep pushing forward! OOH RAH!
Needed to hear this. I feel like all my life has been a fight, but I wouldn't have it any other way.
It makes the victories even sweeter Spencer!
Love your vids SSGT Nichols , thank you for your service, im recently retired law enforcement 28 yrs , over the years I learned the same , up until I retired I always helped out another officer who was struggling especially in like your case military or me law enforcement, definitely not the kind of gig you want someone nervous and not confident, had a command officer like you had same animal , same thing happened me I kept up distance did my thing and dodged him as much as possible
Outstanding!! I am definitely taking that onboard!! Thank You!!!
OOH RAH!
Thank you! great advice
Awesome. Timeless advice. Please keep making more videos. Thanks!
Thank you Ray!
Amen. 🙏🏻 Wise words for any area in life when dealing with a poor leader. It takes a Great leader to deal with a poor leader.
Bless your sgt nichols 💯👍🏾
Thank you for the advice, since I watched this video when it first came out, I kept my head down and kept working, I' just got promoted to SSG in the Army!
Once again the Motivational as always
I have issues along the same lines as the poor leadership in my units
A lot of the things you say help me realize that it’s true, it’s not just our marines who have these issues, and there are good Marines still out there
Semper Fidelis SSgt!
Thank you Ryan. Keep pushing forward even in the face of poor leadership and adversity! OOH RAH!
Your greatness exposes those bad leaders.
Good word SSgt. I dealt with that a lot of that (Officer to Senior enlisted) while active on duty but I never let that take away from the excellent people/leaders I was blessed with priviledge of serving with! Just like you said in your particular story with the Gunny brother there is always a blessing in the works. SF💪🏾☝🏾✊🏾 Couldn't imagine being a NCO today we live in a whole different society mindset I see it in the youth everyday @ work!
OOH RAH! Times have evolved indeed. Thank you for what you did for our country on active duty!
Spot on. I'm a former marine and almost 30 years later still working in public safety. I can attest to the correctness of the drill instructors words here.
Motivator motivator come on out. Wise words being spoken. Keep it up wardawg. Semper
OOH RAH! Thank you.
I only wish I learned this in the army. In my first duty station, I had a bad leader, and it caused my heartache no end. However, as in chess, where you learn to win by losing, I learned these things, and I went into my next duty station, able to show that I knew my job and knew it well, and I became the go-to guy when there were issues that needed fixing. That bad leader did make me strive to prove that I was better than that and to improve myself so that, when I did change stations, I came in with an air of confidence and ability to be a positive player on my team. I only wished I learned it sooner because if I had, I would have advanced quicker.
Having a bad leader at the first duty station is not ideal, especially if that gives a lasting impression. It's great that you progressed beyond that experience. OOH RAH!
Definitely needed this! Thanks SSGT! Semper Fi!
You are 100% right. SEMPER FIDELIS brother. Thank you for your motivation and advise.
OOH RAH! Thank you Matthew.
Legend. We need leaders like you to run this country.
Just popped up in my feed. Thank you SSGT Nichols!
Outstanding advice! Much appreciated and well utilized!
Thank you Gaberial!
This video applies to so much in life ❤
I appreciate hearing this after being a hat just like you
I have worked on the ground operations side for SWA airlines for around 6 years now. It’s frustrating to me when I try to give insights about potential baggage mishandling issues to leadership and they don’t take me seriously. Unfortunately, it’s our costumers who suffer the consequences of avoidable mishaps. Especially ones, that I tried to warn leadership of but they chose not to listen to until it’s too late.
Thank you for your service, sir!
Oorah! Ssgt Nichols!!! We were stationed at Camp Smith, HI back in 03 I believe! I was working for SGM Skinner at the time!
Semper Fi!!!
Thanks SSGT Nichols. I've been going down a dead end road for about three years. Thankyou for your words of encouragement. My leader is one of these you speak of. He is a great guy and I wish Nothing ill upon him. But leadership is not the road he should go down. I will listen and learn from your wisdom. That I promise. From a civilian with love. Fuckin rah!!
OOH RAH! Thank you Zac!
Sarnt. You have inspired millions. What else is there to say or talk about? You have done your part.
Nichols you might not like this comparison as a devildog, your style as a DI is exactly like my senior MTI Jim Grissom at Lackland, AFB in 1988. I didn't know it post graduation, but this man was getting us ready for the Persian Gulf. We got to see first hand what Marines could do.
Well spoken Sir- Thankyou for your service - you are a great American.

Ssgt Nichols thank God for your in site. Amen. Bravo Zulu! We need more leaders like you.👍
Thank you Arthur!
