Worked at Bennigans in the early 90s and gotta say you nailed it. Made these last night and my daughter loved them. I even one upped Bennigans: I served the preserves in a small bowl vice the thimble that Bennigans used.
Really delicious. If you're looking for what Bennigans used to serve, this is it. I tried another recipe first and it kind of tasted like a hot ham and cheese on french toast, which wasn't what I was looking for......this is the recipe for those rare times when only a true, authentic, ( at least American authentic) Monte Cristo will do.
I made these today with brioche bread and OMG they were delicious! These were my favorite sandwiches when I was a kid and I wasn't able to find a restaurant to make them as good as I remember. Thankfully, I now have your recipe where I can make them at home as much as I want😋
I loved Bennigans Monte Christo, they closed down though. I use to get in trouble (just a little)with my boss cuz I use to pick up a Monte Christo on my way to work. The problem was that I worked at the restaurant next to Bennigans & he use to say "Our customers are gonna think our food sucks when they see you eating Bennigans instead of our food?" In my defense I had been working at that restaurant for 8 years and that had been what I ate 80% of thentime because I was easy & i was lazy.... LOL
Hi! Great video! After cutting them into triangles, I take plastic wrap and wrap each one tightly , put in fridge for a bit, unwrap and dip into batter. Makes it stay together, for me. My favorite sandwich!
@@goatcheese4me That's how Bennigan's did it 37 years ago. It was one of their flagship products, and awesome when done right. I must have made a thousand of them.
Out of all the Monte Cristo recipes this lady chef is on point! Good idea to pre cut in triangles before battering! And she has rocking purple hair and explains in good detail, like how to twist and pull to remove toothpicks!
Initially I was extremely skeptical about how great this would work/taste but I'll admit it I was completely blown away. This recipe is so amazing and well worth the effort!
Thanks for the straightforward video. Triangles make it so much easier. I usually just French toast it, so that batter with a couple shots of sugar and cinnamon in stone ground organic whole wheat sub organic half and half, to your batter. Worked excellent. Honey whipped cream and organic raspberry jam go well.
Gotta say ... You almost made me cry with this. I used to go to Bennigan's all the time during high school. This was only thing that I ordered. But, all of the B's closed by us. I haven't had one of these in 20+ years. No joke. Well, I watched, and wife took your recipe and made this for lunch today. Wow, today (june 10, 2019) -- I got to have another Monte Cristo. Man, was it awesome. Also, I gotta argue with you ... ya need (no: red currant jelly) or (yes: raspberry jelly) is what we used and it was perfect.
Good job im so glad you posted this now i can make this all the time. im originally from the Northeast(Philly) and also lived in Baltimore. We used to have a restaurant called Bennigan's be they all went out of business. i used to get the Turkey Bacon and swiss cheese. No powered sugar or raspberry jam just a side of French fries of their Garlic Buttered Mash potatoes. God this is bringing back some memories...lol
Ashlee Marie Cakes I had one in Dallas uptown but with french toast bread. I didn't think you could fry it like that. Anywho, I followed your recipe and it was an excellent breakfast!
Thank you so much Ms. Ashlee!!!!!!! Ever since I had a Monte Cristo in Reno at the Peppermill, I've been trying to find another one closer to me. Haven't been able to do it. No one deep frys theirs. I can't wait to try this. Take care!!!
Your Version of the Monte Cristo is the best one I’ve seen on UA-cam and there have been quite a few actually! What’s your next demonstration going to be?
This looks pretty good, the coating batter is more like a Crepes/ Fish and Chips batter, the "Original" Monte Cristo was from Disneyland's Restaurant (Blue Bayou) you rode past it at the beginning of the Pirates of the Caribbean Ride, that "batter" was actually Eggs, Milk and Corn Starch, with a little Nutmeg, Cinnamon and Salt, by the mid 70's in Southern California EVERY Restaurant made there own version... My Mom's friend was a Chef at Blue Bayou since the day it opened, until the mid 80's. They had a Utensil like a BBQ Spit that held 4 Sandwiches at a time under the thick Rod, they would dunk in the eggs, drain, then into the fryer, then drain, keep warm, then remove from the Spit as needed, put the tooth picks with Fancy Tops into the holes from the Spit, cut on the diagonal and Plate. Assembled as Bread, Jam, Turkey and Cheddar then, BUTTER, Bread, Ham, Swiss, Dijon and Bread...this was to keep the Turkey from being dry.
Best recipe I’ve seen on you tube11/7/19👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 I made this today 11/8/19 turned out great but need a better batter. You have to eat it right away, if not it’s kinda soggy and not crunchy like Bennigan’s.
The batter is the same as bennigan's actually - I've talked to an old chef from their restaurant. You may just need to fry it a little more - also let them cool on a cooling rack vs right on a paper towel and that will help too.
wow, what a great recipe. I definitely can't wait to give this a try. you had my mouth watering the whole time watching this video. thank you for sharing.
Great video, although I put a touch on Vanilla in it and made the batter just a little thicker. Simple vid and sweet lady👍🏼❤️ Also Chedder’s Restraunt does a great one!
+Kelly Egan Huibregtse seriously so good! Disney's not the only place to get them... My first experience with this sandwich was at a chain restaurant that's no longer in business, but now I just make them myself

I love your recipe, I used to get them at Bennigan's and now at Cheddar's! After a few trial and errors I finally stumbled upon your yummy recipe! Thanks, and baking soda not powder, or either or?
Thats where i first had them too! Im like oh my god who created this?!!! Someone must of been high! Bcuz this is such comfort food!!! I want more! Jist had them once so far! Im hooked!
I’d never even heard of a Monte Cristo until a few months ago when I saw one on the menu at my local diner. I ordered one thinking it was going to be just like a grilled ham and cheese with a French toast exterior (it was the “original” kind dipped in an egg bath not in batter.) But it came sprinkled with powdered sugar and a side of maple syrup which I thought was strange at the time. Come to find out the proper way to serve is sprinkled with powdered sugar and a side of raspberry jam. The one I ordered was good, not gonna lie, but I wasn’t crazy about dipping it in the syrup. But JAM??? Now that sounds amazing. The sweet jam with the salty ham…sounds like heaven on earth. I’d try this but I don’t have a deep fryer 🥺 Guess I’ll just have to stick to the egg bath style. I make those all the time, just w/o the sugar and syrup. But next time I’m definitely trying it with powdered sugar and JAM!
So I want to attempt to make this within the next hour or so...quick question...can I use the pancake from the box for the batter?? The complete just add water kind??
Hi! Would you ever consider making this using an air fryer? I'm a BIG fan of the monte cristo, my local diner has been serving these for decades, and I really want to make one completely covered in batter with my new air fryer. I have yet to find a recipe where the sandwich is completely battered and cooked that way, which I understand. My husband had the crazy idea that I could cook the batter a bit in a pot on the stove so it thickens, then spread the batter over the sandwich..... but all I'm picturing is crumbly wet batter sort of sitting on the sandwich.. lol which doesn't sound appetizing.

Wrong. The original is made from an egg batter. Just because a restaurant put their own spin on the batter and it became popular does not mean its authentic from its origination.

Bennigan's and Cheddars both do this tactic as well (wrap overnight), according to a Cheddars waitress and (separately) a former Bennigan's chef.

Backing powder or backing soda?
baking soda
