Liked this! But your pronunciation of certain words drives me insane! 'monsieur' is pronounced 'messieur', and the -ou- in 'gouda' is the same as in HOUSE.
Finally had a chance to make this for the family and a huge hit! Granted my dog was frantic to partake of the freshly grated Gouda but well….she has good taste lol. The addition Of cinnamon and vanilla worked quite well. My thanks for making me look good. Especially in front of my daughter’s boyfriend lol
I've made those before, I usually add the jam/jelly as a layer in the sandwich and use both swiss and provolone, however a brie would be nice add too, hmm maybe? I also never smooshed it down that much, I guess because I used sliced cheese and not shredded, I do however, use a toothpick or two if necessary to hold it together while egg washing it. And, I always egg washed all sides and grilled all sides really encapsulating all the cheese inside (I should add, I always use large format bread and cut the crust off , really square the bread and then build it; after the assembly, I then cut into triangles before the custard bath) It truly is a great sandwich. Cheers!
I LOVE Monte Cristo sandwiches so so much, (in no small part because The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite novel, which introduced me to the sandwich) and this one looks like a huge winner. I can’t wait to try it!
Another one for the 'save button' Looks fantastic and a perfect breakfast for the up coming Christmas holidays away at my daughters - the grandkids will be right into that for sure
Like 17 James!! I love love love the layers in your Monte cristo!! This is my favorite ‘fancy’ sandwich! Looks incredible and saving this to make for the family soon!! Have a great week!
Like 5wow again so delicious and very yummy 👍like the way you explain each thing and it's full of flavours...an awesome chef with awesome recipes to make our mouthwater 😀😀..have a great day stay blessed 🎉🎉❤️❤️
Hello james big fan from Bolivia, im opening 2 restaurants soon, one sells burges, the other sells sandwiches, love your channel, you should try making a monte cristo with pernil ahumado, and mixing mayo with a touch of mustard, you're going to love that experience, i wanted to know if you could make a video about how to balance flavers in the kitchen please
Thank you Sebastián! Good luck you your new restaurants! Yes that would be very tasty and i do want to start making recipes again hopefully it will be soon. I used to think that making videos was easy and it's actually a lot of work! 😂
Another VERY successful food por, uh I mean video. Making me all hungry. Once you said gouda, yuuuuu mmme!!!!! Not fair James. 😛 Ditching the boring old grilled cheese sandwich. Will try. 👍🏼
Hey Chef James, I'm so glad you covered this sandwich! I looked up recipes, and wasn't sure if they did their own twist or not, but once I saw you covered I knew it was going to be great! The strawberry jam, is it meant for the sandwich to be dipped on? Also, is brioche bread ok?
Thanks for the recipe. I've never actually seen this sandwich until I saw your video. I did some searching and today I made the pancake batter dipped version for breakfast. Amazing sandwich. Do you know which is more common James? Did this originate in France or the USA?
@@ChefJamesMakinson I had an instinct. Sweet and savoury seem to be a US theme at breakfast. Great food. I will try the French toasted version as well, I just had to have the pancake battered one at least once. I don't plan to end up like Elvis
I have been eating something like this for breakfirst a few times a week. This video really helped me improve my recipe. I usually cover the bread with eggs first, and then add the jambon and cheese in the pan, and give it a few more minutes. I prefer your approach. It's easier that way. And I like to put a little mirin in the eggs. it's not european any more, I guess. But mirin goes really well with eggs.
depends on how much smoke you would like with your sandwich, this is a sweet sandwich so you can try a little bit to see. I would rather put smoked cheese on a cold sandwich buddy!
Awesome video with delicious looking sandwich. Great job. Making me hungry. This is one of my favorite sandwiches. Keep up the good share. Stay in touch and see you in the next video.
Hey James, how are you? Man, could you recommend a "cheese sauce" or types of cheese that are good to melt and use on top of the meat? There are some videos on UA-cam, but the choice of cheeses and the way of preparation are a little confusing. Thanks.
James, here in Huntsville, Alabama, there has been a weirdly obsessive fascination over Reuben sandwiches lately. Do you have any tips for a great Reuben???
I was going to watch the video until he showed three slices of bread at the beginning and yet his final product only had two slices of bread. I watched a video from a real French chef and he says there’s no way in the world you can get the cheese melted in the middle like this. I’m sure all of them taste really good
5:40 What I don't understand here, we here actually have savory toast (with cheese and ham) not something sweet, and than put some powdered sugar and jam ?
@@ChefJamesMakinson The cheese-jam pairing, I as an Italian know it, I often do it too. But the cooked ham-jam pairing seems very strange to me. It looks to me like one of those strange “English pairings”. So does Gordon Ramsay when he makes a “Carbonara” and put in peas and other stuff.
It was a beautiful sandwich. I was drooling over it until the powdered sugar. I am weird i guess but i have never understood why chefs sprinkle powdered sugar on some savory foods. On deserts i get but on a nice savory sandwich like that just makes no sense to me.🤔
I tried, I failed, but lesson learned. Rye bread is much worse than simple toasted bread in this case. It was still good, but not restaurant quality for sure
@@ChefJamesMakinson Most people don't, but the "English" pronunciation is just painful. In much the same way as the English pronunciation of names like "van Gogh".
English lesson: Look up what substitute means. You do not mean you can substitute the Gouda or Gruyere FOR any good melting cheese, you mean the opposite, you can substitute ANY good melting cheese FOR the Gouda or Gruyere, or you can substitute the Gouda or Gruyere WITH any good melting cheese. The SUBSTITUTE = the cheese you are using instead of what is in the recipe. The way you said it just makes absolutely no sense at all, it is backwards, but I hear this all the time nowadays. What did they teach you in school? Not good English. Sorry.
@@ChefJamesMakinson you used it backwards. Absolutely backwards, very common mistake. I used to write for a living and I’m no idiot. Proofreader, editor.

I will have to try this... though in my part of the US the tradition is to serve with a proper maple syrup to dip it in rather than serving with jam.

i've made these a few times at work, never used mayo for it, can't get the thought of mayo and jam mixing out of my head.
We are going to try the Spanish chicken wings today

I respect your choice of picking jam, but ketchup is just perfect for a sandwich like that :) Anyway it's worth to try something different

powdered sugar on ham^cheese???
mix hot sauce into the eggs. It works, trust me
