My reason for living in 1989, watching these two play. I was a Grafanatic (still am).

Steffi said years later that this was one of matches she was most proud of in her career. I get the impression that she really felt she was going to lose it because of the physical problems she was having, and probably had memories of how she'd lost the French open final that year for similar reasons. She was very proud she got through it.

yes i think too, but i think of other reason. Here she reached all GS final years in a row for the second time. High Pressure

    Thank you, humbly and kindly.
And, for those who may not know, Steffi goes on to win this US Open.

I’ve always wondered why sabatini didn’t play Graf the way she did rushing the net when she did beat Graf in the open final in 1990.

Gabi only really began to start to play an attacking game at the US Open in 1990. The reason for that is because after the French open in 1990 and a disappointing loss to Novotna, Gabi switched coaches to Carlos Kirmayr. He wanted to bring some freshness to her game because the baseline game you see her playing here had got very stale. They started working on playing a more attacking game, but Gabi only really started to do it in matches when she played Mary Joe Fernandez in the 1990 US Open semi final. She was playing her usual baseline game and was going to lose - so she decided to try what she had been doing in practice and going into the net more. In the final against Graf, Gabi decided to try and attack more from the start because she was so tired from her semi final, and she wanted to try and keep the points a bit shorter. It worked really well for her.

I think she said after she retired that this was one of the wins that meant the most to her.

Two single handed backhand players competed to prove if slice or groundstroke backhand is better.

Not if you had Everts backhand. Problem with two handed backhand is reach and Chris was just there you never incision her lunging or out of balance . She hit her backhand differently than All that to handers. She put her left hand on the rack it just for support she didn’t use that hand to push through the stroke she primarily used her left hand like a single handed backhand and she moves so well that she was able to get to those white cross court shot.
