One of the few times I remember Graf cramping in a match. Credit to Gaby for pushing her to the limit and to Steffi for managing (barely) to pull through.
Steffi have all sorts of problems throughout her entire career!!! Amazingly how she accomplished what she had accomplished really is baffling!! Goat of goats
Tough 3 set semi-final win for Steffi against her friendly rival Gabriela. I think Steffi started to suffer from cramps towards the end of the match. Way to tough it out and luckily, she was able to recuperate for the final. For me, what stands out was not the competitive play between these two but the noise! My goodness I’m still so baffled that you can hold a huge sports event with airplanes ✈️ constantly flying overhead. It’s so hysterical that even the commentators were raising their voices when the jet engines were the loudest. I’ve played in the public parks or school campuses where loud music was playing. Distracting for sure but for me, it was the lack of hearing the ball coming off from my opponent’s racquet that was such a disadvantage. That sound after contact helps me gauge how much speed or how much spin the ball had but without it, I had no early warning indication. I wonder how it’s like for deaf tennis players 🤔. Thank goodness airplanes flying over the USO is no longer happening or at least very infrequent (probably different flight path away from the stadium).
kevmcg i can send you the link so you can copy on DVD your self, but the only problem is i don’t have ur email addressed. You know how Mary Carillo broadcasting right? Very interesting even Mary mention how Peter Graf bet against Steffi that she lose to Gaby. Personally i prefer US Broadcast for US Tournament they had more “FLAVOR”.
Kinclongs Laundry How bout firing her coach? who pushed her to play AUTO BALL higher and higher with topspin that eventually tiring Gaby and she ran out of gas in the end. Her game is complicated and took a lot of work compared to Steffi. Just like Mary Carillo and Tony Trabert from CBS broadcast mention to Gaby performance “Her mind is willing but her body isn’t”. Only a year later in Carlos Kirmayr hands finally we saw Gaby’s game matured and executing better tactical game than Angel Gimenez but that’s a different story.
@@MachoDefeatersGaby's tennis was very joyless back then. In fairness though, Graf was always more vulnerable to high, heavy topspin shots. Gaby did sometimes manage to win longer matches with it. When she retired it turned she had a form of anaemia - the type Pete Sampras did which sometimes affected him.
Thank you for posting these vids ..greatest female player of all time Graf alongside Henin

Steffi said many years later that this match was one of her most treasured victories. She really thought she was going to lose it when she cramped.

Angel Gimenez, Gaby’s coach
Headline Australia open....
Sabatini should have won it. She were disadvantaged by the umpire many times...

The umpire ??? What the hell did the umpire do ? She had the advantage of a partisan crowd.
Such rubbish the better player won.
