I like the Olga thing. Not only because of the reverse role they play with Helga now, but being an over achiever up to college and then crash down, not seeing a clear path to follow after, losing time in death ends... It's really relatable. I wish the show would potentially makes her tridimensional and not just a pathetic attention seeker.

I just realized that this "becoming a better person" is EXACTLY what Miriam and Bob did with Olga! In a few flashbacks when Olga is still at home, you see Miriam being sober, and Bob seeming to be a proud father, using his daughters success to support his own business. They put all the pressure on Olga to be perfect because she has potential. Meanwhile Helga was dropped like a rock and just had to grow up without that love. If as a teen she's starting to shine, the parents do the exact same thing. Only Helga has had 15yrs of neglect, and can more quickly figure out how conditional this love really is. Unlike Olga who it sounds got the golden child treatment much earlier, and therefore wasn't able to recognize how conditional her parents love really was.

Thank you Jordan for doing the interview with Craig Bartlett. Definitely brings more closure to the series as a whole. And with the Jungle Movie done, who knows what could happen next.

Idk if I'm the only one but Hey Arnold is probably the show were i can feel the most powerful 90s energy and early 2000s , the vibe is something that, make me feel a lot of nostalgia.
I love how the show planned on also addressing Phoebe unwilling to be the Asian Sidekick and embracing her individuality. It’s a trope that is sooo common and Phoebe deserved more
The Phoebe farting episode... might have been the most hilarious episode in the entire series. Helga selling her friend out by saying she "Rip's 'em all night long" when sleeping over. Absolutely killed me.
@Pygmalion in Venus you’ve clearly never watched the old Pink Panther movies with Peter Sellers, the Green Hornet, or even Dragon Ball (Krillin is technically Asian, even if Goku isn’t with him being an alien and all) or the movie Disturbia starring Shia Labeof. There’s so many others, but those are the main three that comes to me when I think of Asian sidekick trope.
@@kyleellis1825 They were freaking 9, kyle. The woulda adult show sounds as if they spent time away from each other and Helga is really forced to register herself/life. The premise of them coming back together as adults after growing and changing from their childhood trauma is SO CUTE. Don't apply every statement like an umbrella cuz you're really just saying a damaged kid does something wrong in childhood and can never be helped/changed . Which again, the show sounded as if that was the premise.
I remember reading long, long ago like a brief mention about The Patakis being something pitched to MTV that didn't go anywhere. It's amazing to learn about it all these years later.
Its no surprise that Helga would have gotten her own show considering that the episodes focused on her in Hey Arnold, especially the one where she went to therapy, are the ones that people remembered the most
If the Patakis were made today it would be very popular, since the majority of us who watched hey arnold are adults now and would understand everything. Its definitely not tooo late to make this!
I love SO MUCH when people heavily involved in shows are open to talking to UA-camrs about their art in on-camera interviews. It’s so much more personal than “official” interviews with big media outlets, and their passion really comes through. ❤️
And Zoey 101 is coming back as Zoey 102. Avatar Studios is continuing with new and old stories. A new Good Burger movie is coming. Paramount needs to see that we want a continuation of Hey Arnold but with The Patakis!!
@Garbo hey Arnold isn't a cartoon network cartoon its a viacom o.g. nicktoon it wouldn't be viable to be on adult swim ren and stimpy was able to be on spike TV because viacom owned spike TV ren and stimpy adult party
Haha it makes sense though when you think about it. The more sheltered and watched the golden child is by their parents, the more likely it is that they're going to rebel later in life
From the sounds of it this series COULD have worked. The premise for it is interesting and the Patakis were some of the most interesting characters in Hey Arnold. However if it were going to be made today we would have to have the right people working on it. We ALL know how badly wrong it can go if the wrong people work on an adult take of a beloved kids' show. “Do you mean Vel-“ SHH!!! WE DO NOT SPEAK ITS NAME!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 One thing I’d love to see if it did happen is to have a character introduced that Olga goes full stalker on. Similar to how her sister was with Arnold, though on a slightly more deranged level. I think there could be some untapped potential of exploring the results of Olga's status on “Golden Child” taken away, seeing her fall into an even darker pit than Helga did when she was ignored. But hey that’s just what I’d do. While I doubt we’ll ever see anything come of this it’s still interesting to think “What If?”
I genuinely appreciate all the “Hey Arnold” content. There is truly no other show like it. So finding out that there could’ve been more with Helga makes me happy but also sad that it didn’t happen during that wonderful decade of the 90’s
I really feel that hey arnold is one of the most underrated animated "kid's" shows of all time. every once in a while I'll revisit it as a sort of comfort watch, and I'm still impressed and moved by how authentically it presents working class families, poverty, childhood struggles, varied family dynamics.... and the pigeon man.
also awesome video, thank you for taking the time to talk to craig and canonize this lore lol. the pitch seems so perfect, I'm sad it didn't get made but stoked that it was even an idea
I love that the Golden Child / Scapegoat dynamic of Helga and Olga would have been flipped, because that is so true to reality. Olga was constantly bringing in awards and accolades, but ultimately failed to launch, meanwhile Helga is actively getting accolades because she is younger. Miriam and Bob only know how to coddle one child and ignore the other, so when Olga starts becoming a loser with no prospects, it makes sense they'd turn on her, and of course, never blame themselves.
Considered how deeply troubled and honestly fucked up that family's dynamics were a more mature show (and Hey Arnold was already really really mature to begin with) would have been amazing. We could finally adress Miriam's alcoholism , sisters could finally FINALLY grow close have a true bond and Olga can finally be free of her family and do what truly made her happy despite her success in everything. We can get all the ladies away from Bob as well leaving that disgusting piece of shit to rot and Miriam can finally devorce his abusive ass and become the successful woman in whatever she wanted to do from now on.
@@PeterGriffin11 he wasn't to this extend, fella there is projecting, he wasn't a super good dad and had a bunch of problems, but the show made case for both of helga parents to show both their negative sides and positive ones, is like the fact that in all the show bob never showed one once of sexist even if he could be a real ass, if you call him abusive, then so is Miriam in her own passivity, he clearly was a jerk, but did loved his family in his own way
@@KnucklesxReala911 No, Bob was overtly abusive. His behavior was not remotely normal or acceptable. I'm not projecting, I'm saying this as someone who had a normal, non-abusive dad. Even as a child I could tell Bob was a bad father, and not a "bad father" in the "bumbling idiot" kind of trope, but actually actively terrible. Miriam was a neglectful acoholic for sure, but Bob was a screamer/yeller who physically intimidated everyone to get his way.
@@PeterGriffin11 You can love your family but still be abusive. Loving your family and or your family members isn't exclusive. All abusers care to an extent, and to try to separate that only enables the abused to stay with their abusers and or abusers to justify the kind of "love" they give their victims. You don't have to be intentionally an awful person to be abusive, most abusers are charismatic and or nice people until you get to see their true colors. Bob and Miriam 100% are abusive parents, to both Helga and Olga
I initially felt cheated by not getting this show, but after I found out about the premise, I realized that all Helga ever wanted was Arnold, & after getting him in the end, this show would have taken that away from her by having him move away.
she is very dependent on him for any light in her life, i LOVE shortaki, i LIVE for shortaki, and I LOVE ships where they cant live without each other HOWEVER hey arnold is a grounded real show so a patakis show would survive because we'd see a helga trying to find herself without arnold, which honestly, is important. the fanfiction Helga Unbound deals with this topic beautifully.
It's so cool that we finally have more info about this piece of Hey Arnold lore. I've always imagined if the show ever got rebooted that it would feature the characters dealing with more mature teenage issues. Helga writing unsent letters to Arnold strikes me as a similar framing decide that Doug used when writing in his journal.
I think Craig could absolutely get this done now. The rise of adult animation is garnering attention and I truly think if he pitches this right, the show could happen.
You know for the longest part it makes me wonder of all the potential animation spin off’s, movies, series that never happened. It makes me wonder of the potential vault of concepts, scripts, artwork that either never went anywhere or were opened every so often to recycle into something different
That's super cool you got to interview the Hey Arnold creator himself. I would've loved if this had become a real show. It's a shame Nick/MTV weren't for it.
Would have loved to see a season six. Just seeing Helga and Arnold getting closer. Maybe even a little jealousy in Arnold’s part towards Her. Some other boy showing an interest in her. This is my comfort show and then Hulu took it almost all of it away…
I would've LOVED an hour of "Daria" and "The Patakis" as a teenager. I was really a little too old for Hey Arnold when it started, but it was so well written I watched it for years.
I heard about The Patakis years ago and I still would love to see this come to fruition. I think this show would be so successful today with how much more widespread knowledge there is about toxic family dynamics and how they affect children of them for the rest of their lives and if not for that it would also be a great example/representation of that for people who came from dysfunctional families. I also really love Helga as a character too and how complex and imperfect she is I would love to see how she navigates the world a little wiser this time and if she wants to still pursue Arnold I hope she has bettered herself enough to apologize to him for bullying him as a way of masking her feelings. I would love to see this as a show in the creator's original vision but if not I would absolutely love a graphic novel series as well.
I can’t believe how bashful Craig is about this amazing idea, would’ve loved to see this. Still not seen the Jungle Movie, but I 100% want more Hey Arnold! in some form.
I think this could still happen. I'd love for it to still get made. Maybe Craig could try Comedy Central, a place where he could get away with arguably as much as he'd want to.
Yeah but a show like that would lean more heavily towards drama than comedy. Comedy Central isn’t known for dramas and South Park is as close as it gets.
This is pretty much fan fiction here, but years ago I came up with a fan character for Hey Arnold. I never named the guy but he would be the "cool uncle" archetype who would enter Helga's life. The estranged brother of either Bob or Miriam, they would move back to the city after a multiple-year absence to try to mend his relationship with his sibling. And would end up having a very positive influence on Helga's life from that point on. Helga would look up to her uncle and strive to be the kind of person he is.
I like that idea. Literally the only person who is a major positive role model is Arnold. The rest of the kids and their teacher had a lot of redeeming qualities - loyalty, for one - but since Helga doesn't have much respect for them, they don't have much influence on her.
God, this is still such a solid idea. Everything in the original show is so well fleshed out that the characters aged 5-10 years feels completely organic. Even today, you can see Bob adopting the modern side hustle persona, Olga becomes an influencer, Helga takes on the Gen Z critical outlook on everything, Miriam gets addicted to consuming social media.
Honestly I love the idea of Olga going from "Perfect" to "Loser" since a lot of kids who were pressured and were the "perfect gifted kid" burnt out after college and in many ways became "Losers" because they finally broke. There is literally a meme bout "Were you the gifted kid everyone had high hopes for but now you're in your 30s working a dead end job with no future in sight or are you normal?" and other versions ... and the fact that so many "Gifted" and "Perfect" kids RELATE to that says /a lot/. I can imagine after going to college and all the pressure to perform was gone from her parents + the lack of praise [since she didn't live at home] - Ogla filled her life with boyfriends [as mentioned] to fill the gap of praise and attention she used to get from her folks. And then being on her own without needing to perform, she started to let herself slip here and there for a bit of "much needed rest" and eventually tumbled down. She still graduated but finally having unexpected freedom kind of messed herself up to some degree and "became a loser" as suggested. It's super common with the gifted kids or if the golden child is older and goes off on their own and reality bites them. It's really a perfect transition, and could even be something for Helga to worry about becoming when she's the center of attention / seen now in the same light. Could even be something she'd have to overcome [both in fear and practice] and maybe help set her sister back right before it gets to be too late.
What's funny is that in the episode where Helga forges Olga's report card Olga tells Helga that she envies the fact that their parents don't notice her so I can see it Helga hating being in the spotlight
I wonder if Arnold actually moved away or if his grandpa died, his grandma was declared incompetent, and he was put in the foster care system. That could've been an interesting element to explore with Helga marking the aniversary of her soul mate's departure by writing about the events that led up to him moving in a flashback episode
Originally when The Jungle Movie was planned in the early 00s, Craig revealed Arnold's parents would have passed away which would have been the case for The Patakis too. When they re-picked it up, Craig decided instead to keep the parents alive. Though it could still be very plausible to have Arnold leave, eg: the green eyes are in trouble again or something and this time Arnold joins his parents as he doesn't want to be left behind again.
Hey Arnold really built up its own world during the runtime and ended up more or less iconic in its time just as well and I have often thought about where the characters are now and what they could be doing. Along with the Helga Spinoff, I'd love to see the characters in various stages in life at least in the long Arnold and Helga lovestory.
this would have been an amazing series. i still watch hey arnold as a full grown adult. its so complex and so much you can learn from it at any age. it was truly above its time and will always be one of my favorites
This was good to see. It’s really cool to see the series creator talk about his work. The fact the he is willing to revamp his work but keep what he knows works is amazing and difficult. Thanks for the vid.
This was the best video I've seen in regards to the Pataki's. It was a great interview, and so cute to see Craig's awkward smiles as he looks back over his original thoughts and notes. I would also love to see a season six, I'm so curious about how Helga would handle an actual relationship with Arnold.
Man, now I'm really sad this doesn't exist. I actually think it would go over better nowadays VS 23 years ago. And I love seeing how much Craig still clearly cares deeply for this series. I'd trust him to make this series good even today.
Goddd I was a *huge* Hey Arnold fan back in the day and remember learning this was a thing when I would've been about Helga's age in it, I was so miffed it never got made; I mean Daria was great but frankly the bible makes it seem closer to an As Told By Ginger sort of thing. It's so wild to actually see all these outlines and concepts get leaked all these years later, really feels like closing a chapter on my childhood 🥲 thanks for covering this bc I prob wouldn't have heard about it otherwise. Also shout-out to Craig for having that Mark Ryden print behind him, I have the same one in my house 😂
I really like this idea of a Helga spin off. With the events of the jungle movie it makes sense that Arnold would probably spend his high school years globe hopping with his parents and making Helga the show focus is just genius. (Or at least a well thought out concept)
That’s awesome that you got Craig to do an interview!! He seems like such a cool guy. I wish we could get this show! I know so many people who want it!!
This should certainly still happen. Hey Arnold is a masterful piece of animation and would really benefit from a sort of "Epilogue Series." I would pick up graphic novel volumes of the stories continuation as well, any way to get it out there for fans!
I remember reading about this from the creator on AOL message boards. I was so excited and told my friends that this show would soon be coming to Nick at Nite. I was so sorely disappointed after I saw Hey! Arnold get canceled, since I knew The Patakis would go with it. It was super validating in my 20s to look this up and find out it wasn't a fever dream. 😂
This is so cool. I love how Craig has got these fully formed ideas of the characters (Arnold and Helga being soulmates who will definitely end up together, Gerald being this cunning entrepreneur) in his head and how enthusiastic he talks about them. It’s a reminder that these shows mean as much to the creators as the fans if not more
Theres always such a comfort in seeing professionals talk about embarrassment towards their old work. Just a little reminder that oh yeah, they feel that way too just like us smaller artists and writers.
The fact that u get the commercial drops from navy in the day and the sync up perfectly to the actual ads might just be my favorite detail in ur videos.
if he still wanted to make it he should pitch it to hulu. i do t see why they wouldn't be interested in it. he would also probably get way more creative freedom

I really love the idea of Helga writing and storing volumes of unsent letters to Arnold. That absolutely seems like something she would do.
I love how the show planned on also addressing Phoebe unwilling to be the Asian Sidekick and embracing her individuality. It’s a trope that is sooo common and Phoebe deserved more
wdym?
The Phoebe farting episode... might have been the most hilarious episode in the entire series. Helga selling her friend out by saying she "Rip's 'em all night long" when sleeping over. Absolutely killed me.
An asian sidekick isn't even a trope. Calm down.
@@fabtasticplanet1517 I can list plenty of more movies and shows where the black guy was a sidekick.
It's SOOO cute hearing Arnold and Helga being called soulmates. SO CUTE.
NO. That is normalizing stalkers and saying, just wear the person down. Arnold should have a restraining order on Helga.
Well its logical, if you know story from grandpa and granny 😂.
As a 32 year old lady who still supports Helga's rights and wrongs - I still wish this has become a thing. ❤
Eh, the Jungle Movie was enough.
We were robbed! ROBBED, I TELL YOU!
@@SirBlackReedsGet out! It was not!
I remember reading long, long ago like a brief mention about The Patakis being something pitched to MTV that didn't go anywhere. It's amazing to learn about it all these years later.
Cause they said mtv already had Daria. Which they claimed looked too similar in their eyes
Its no surprise that Helga would have gotten her own show considering that the episodes focused on her in Hey Arnold, especially the one where she went to therapy, are the ones that people remembered the most
I love how the concept art is very of it's time. Olga design in particular reminds me of like an early 2000s pop star.
Why does the mom have her hand on her ass though?
Reminds me of like baby spice from spice girls
If the Patakis were made today it would be very popular, since the majority of us who watched hey arnold are adults now and would understand everything.
Its definitely not tooo late to make this!
I love SO MUCH when people heavily involved in shows are open to talking to UA-camrs about their art in on-camera interviews. It’s so much more personal than “official” interviews with big media outlets, and their passion really comes through. ❤️
Has craig bartlett ever considered making a comic book series (digital and physical) about the pataki's?
Probably not, besides comics are a money pit at the moment, they’re really not selling well
@@kirbyfan4 Only because of hacks writing the Comics.
If the Patakis are well written they'll sell like Hotcakes.
@@kirbyfan4 Really? comics aren’t doing well? Manga is booming isn’t it?
would be cool to see short web comics!
I don't think it's too late for The Patakis. I mean we have an adult iCarly that's pretty good.
The new iCarly is not good
@@babitferreira so the same as the original?
And Zoey 101 is coming back as Zoey 102. Avatar Studios is continuing with new and old stories. A new Good Burger movie is coming. Paramount needs to see that we want a continuation of Hey Arnold but with The Patakis!!
As long as it isn't woke, then I'm all for it.
@@HenshinFanatic okay normally I'll say everyone's entitled to their POVs but what is wrong with y'all? Lmao
With paramount + or Netflix existing this show can actually become reality.
I agree, it's definitely not too late for it
I was thinking the same thing! Let’s hope that it will one day to pass.
Adult Swim could also be a viable option. They have saved quite a few adult animations from cancellation.
Netflix will just cancel after one season for big mouth and bad reboots
@Garbo hey Arnold isn't a cartoon network cartoon its a viacom o.g. nicktoon it wouldn't be viable to be on adult swim ren and stimpy was able to be on spike TV because viacom owned spike TV ren and stimpy adult party
Oh man Olga’s arc feels like itll hit close to home for a lot of formerly overachieving kids.
Olga's storyline sounds like what would have happened to Alex in Modern Family.
Ok but Olga wildin' out in a miniskirt and tank is amazing.
Haha it makes sense though when you think about it. The more sheltered and watched the golden child is by their parents, the more likely it is that they're going to rebel later in life
Thanks for giving us more Intel about the proposed spinoff, Jordan. I love that you were able to find some more information from Craig himself.
“Do you mean Vel-“
SHH!!! WE DO NOT SPEAK ITS NAME!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
One thing I’d love to see if it did happen is to have a character introduced that Olga goes full stalker on.
We can get all the ladies away from Bob as well leaving that disgusting piece of shit to rot and Miriam can finally devorce his abusive ass and become the successful woman in whatever she wanted to do from now on.
yeah this would have been / could be a really good show.
@@GoddoDoggo Fr Bob was literally verbally abusive, judgemental and narcissistic.
Yea
That might be why it wouldn't make sense for this show to be made.
she is very dependent on him for any light in her life, i LOVE shortaki, i LIVE for shortaki, and I LOVE ships where they cant live without each other HOWEVER hey arnold is a grounded real show so a patakis show would survive because we'd see a helga trying to find herself without arnold, which honestly, is important. the fanfiction Helga Unbound deals with this topic beautifully.
I wrote a FanFiction with this exact plot a few years ago. They're called "Hey Arnold: After the Jungle" and "Hey Arnold: The Other Side of Helga".
Do Arnold and Helga end up together?
@@de_lontekk8019 Why don't you read them and find out?
Mind sharing some details? This sounds really cool
Fun fact: hearing about the Pataki's years ago is how I found out about Daria
To me I found Daria very boring, and would find the Pataki’s more exciting, since I’m a huge Hey Arnold fan myself.
Characters in Hey Arnold already acted like they were 12 versus 9 so I'd be here for it.
Damn I wish this had gotten at least a pilot. This sounds like such a good series idea
Would have loved to see a season six. Just seeing Helga and Arnold getting closer. Maybe even a little jealousy in Arnold’s part towards Her. Some other boy showing an interest in her. This is my comfort show and then Hulu took it almost all of it away…
This spin off NEEDS to exist
The part about the letters makes me imagine a coming-of-age movie called "Dear Arnold" or maybe "with love, Helga"
I would have loved to see the flashback of Bob and Mariam meeting at a frat party 😂
Mariam was a wine-oh..
Nick at night idoits
Facts lol
Miriam *
i need this spin-off... bring it to life!! PLEASE!
I would've LOVED an hour of "Daria" and "The Patakis" as a teenager. I was really a little too old for Hey Arnold when it started, but it was so well written I watched it for years.
The Pataki's would've been a hit! Wish we would've gotten that spin-off
I'm so bummed that no one wanted to pick this up. Hey Arnold is such a classic 😢
This sounds amazing, it would have been a good thing to have back when it was concepted, but it would be even better if it were to come out now.
Perfect as a Paramount Plus exclusive.
I loved Hey Arnold and related to Helga a lot growing up. I would have loved a Patakis spin off. Great video!
He should pitch this show again for Paramount+
Man, this would have been such a cool series to have.
OMG you got to talk with Craig Bartlett!!! That’s incredible.
This is super cool that you were able to interview the creator! I think this show sounds like a great pitch, in my opinion.
Thanks for giving us closure for the patakis bible and it’s so cool you got to talk to Craig! W video Jordan ❤ loved it
Ugh. I want a spin off so bad
Please do Recess, The Proud family, The cramp Twins, Boy Meets World, and Drake and Josh!
He got his parents back, no reason for the foster care system to take him if his grandpa died.
Or his parents could run the border house until he was old enough.
I really hope this video finds it’s way to Nickelodeon and they connect with Craig to make this come to life.
We need this series!😫
This was good to see. It’s really cool to see the series creator talk about his work. The fact the he is willing to revamp his work but keep what he knows works is amazing and difficult. Thanks for the vid.
This was the best video I've seen in regards to the Pataki's. It was a great interview, and so cute to see Craig's awkward smiles as he looks back over his original thoughts and notes. I would also love to see a season six, I'm so curious about how Helga would handle an actual relationship with Arnold.
After your HUGE Hey Arnold video, i wasnt expecting you to talk about the series for a good couple of years from now, at the least lol
So glad The Jungle Movie finally got released. It was the only "reboot" that gave me some closure. SO good and SO wonderful. ❤
I loved this show when I was a kid. Hey Arnold is one of the shows that made your childhood.
Damn, I'd have watched the hell out of this.
I dont care that it's 2023 I still want a adult spin off of them as a movie
I really like this idea of a Helga spin off. With the events of the jungle movie it makes sense that Arnold would probably spend his high school years globe hopping with his parents and making Helga the show focus is just genius. (Or at least a well thought out concept)
That’s awesome that you got Craig to do an interview!! He seems like such a cool guy. I wish we could get this show! I know so many people who want it!!
I myself want this show to exist
This should certainly still happen. Hey Arnold is a masterful piece of animation and would really benefit from a sort of "Epilogue Series." I would pick up graphic novel volumes of the stories continuation as well, any way to get it out there for fans!
Plot twist: Arnold has no attraction to Helga and all her advances will be met with rejection.
It’s a reminder that these shows mean as much to the creators as the fans if not more
Meanwhile in the parallel universe, The Patakis is happening.
I wanna see more toon creators talk about the pitches that never made it to air.
Mad respect to you Craig! Thank you for giving us all this insight! Mad respect. Mad love! ❤❤❤
