Harley-Davidson Twin Cam Engine Is Not a One Size Fits All

  • The Harley-Davidson Twin Cam engine platform doesn't fit every person and every situation depending on what you plan to do with the bike. There are 17 years of engines out there and in all different displacement sizes which vary in price by year. Budget determines a lot of things depending on how much you are willing to spend for a used bike but each Twin Cam engine brings something different to the table. If you work on your own motorcycles and don't mind engine work and upgrades a Twin Cam 88 might be right for you. If you plan on buying a Harley-Davidson Twin Cam and only doing the minor maintenance. then having a shop take care of the rest a Twin Cam 96 or Twin Cam 103 may be a better buy.

    In my opinion, buying a NEW bike from H-D can also be a toss of the dice or a 'pig in a poke' , yes, you have a warranty but that doesn't make it feel good as you're waiting for what hopefully is the 'fix' at the dealer...we've all heard the stories, that being said, personally, the cost of a new one is a bit much for me.
    The used market is plentiful with a lot of perfectly great bikes.
    EDUCATE YOURSELF BEFORE YOU BUY
    Your videos are a great help!

    To my thinking the 88 is the best Twinkie as with all Twinkies the cam plate & oil pump should be changed to S & S . Bore the cyclinders to 95 or 97 you won't be disappointed ! One thing you never mentioned is the main bearing in the Six speed is gonna fail no matter what size motor you have ( I've rebuilt more than my share ) another good reason to get an 88 they all had 5 speeds ! That's my take & I work on them everyday in my shop !

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 роки тому +4

      That's truth that you won't be disappointed going with a 95 or 97 on a 88! Those bikes run hard with a conversion done to them, main bearings on that 6 speed is for sure one thing that always goes. It seems some bikes run forever with on the original main and other crap out early. Thank you for mentioning that!

      @@GixxerFoo my fix is running Amsoil 75/140 severe gear oil in them seems to save that bearing & the viscosity I'd the same as 20/50 oil so no extra drag on the trans in cooler weather . It works !

    If you can get a great deal on a 88 I say go for it! Upgrade the tensioners, put in a descent conversion cam, and do the 95" kit. You'll have your purchase price plus $2,500 for all the parts. But... You'll have a very reliable and stout power package that will put most other twin cams to shame (with the exception of the 110). Great video!

    You are by far my favorite UA-camr when it comes to used bike performance! You are right in my wheelhouse with your information.
    I even purchased my 02 FLHTCUI because you gave me the confidence and info to trust the TC 88. I'm also thinking seriously about the Hammer Performance Cylinder and Head porting deal you talked about in your September 10 video. It sounds like a great winter project. My only issue is I also have a Gold wing as well as a 1948 Harley with a 80" Shovelhead in it, that are needing some TLC.
    keep up the great work!

    At 20,000 miles even a twin cam should not have cam chain issues yet. If they can afford it they could put in a good cam plate oil pump and a good gear-driven cam if the run-out is not too severe on the crankshaft and if you sell the bike you could use these as selling points so the owner knows that he does not have to do what you already paid for in order to make it more reliable.

Installed a SE 259e cams and that bike ran like a charm It did have a compensator issue but not bad enough for me to change. I kept it until I purchased my 2021 Tri Glide Ultra. Wud up Foo! I still say 01-02 were the best years with the timken. That picture of the cam chest with fragments of shoe is what my 2002 Night Train looked like when I bought it with 32k, even the metal sping tensioner blew apart. These years carb'd are my favorite. They are also the coolest running TC, 103's run hot as hell. 2005 was the year of the crap heads. Every year has it's issues but these early 01-02 years I feel Harley embraced QC and had the least amount of problems. The 5 speed tranny is bulletproof and a built 95" will outrun a M8 107 and keep up with the 114 up to 120mph, at least mine will. Harley's are like Lego's, super easy to work on, especially the carb'd years and proprietary tools used once pays for themselves. 30 years from now, I feel confident that when we look back, the early TC's will go down as Harley's greatest engine.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 роки тому +1

      The twin cams caught a lot of flack but they really are some great motors, especially the early engines! Pieces of tensioner shoe and metal is the last thing you want to see in the cam chest, I hope you caught it before it ran through the engine.

    One thing about a TC88 is it has the timken bearing and the tighter runnout specs but if you plan on going over 96" or so you have to swap the crank. Which I did when I did my 107 with Darkhorse MOW. It was tough swapping that crank because it was within a thousandth. Nice thing about the OEM TC88 cranks with Timken is you are usually able to go gear drive cam if you want because of the tighter tolerances on the crank.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 роки тому +1

      Twin cam 88 cranks are awesome with the Timken lower ends from 1999 to 2002. 2003 on is when it went down hill with roller bearings and they started pressing cranks.

My springer 88 is a solid motor since I did the cam chest and cams upgrade but it still wont pull like his 96 and he has that 6th gear. And both bikes are EFI mine with a good tune and his with factory tune. Now if a full dressed bagger was the bike of choice the 103 would hands down the engine to have. For my style of riding the 96 would be perfect. I hope the put a 95 BB kit on my 88 unless I run on to a screamin deal for a 96" bike. Thanks for another great video.

    I’m running a on a ‘10 ultra with the 96. Had the cams upgraded for some passing power. The compensator failed but it didn’t show any of the real obvious symptoms. The only symptom was during start up it wouldn’t fire off on the first stab of the button. Would kickback occasionally. Had the S.E. Compensator put in and she fires on the first jab and shifts much smoother. I never had issues finding neutral so I figured my compensator was good. All things considered I’m happy with my 96, and there isn’t a tc I wouldn’t own. Tensioners are cheap and every bike Ive owned has eventually became a stage two engine.

    2002 TC 88 is a good year to start with. It is the last year that uses Timken brg's. on the sprocket shaft not roller brg's. Manual primary chain tensioner.
    Upgrade the cam chest with cams, camplate, updated oil pump hydraulic cam tensioners or even gear drive cams.
    Then pull the heads and have a econo port job done. I would keep the bore at 3.750 (88"), stronger cylinders. No thin cast iron liner that you get with the 3.875 (95")
    cylinders.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 роки тому

      That's a great point and yes the cylinder walls were a lot thicker on those too! That's why if you elect to you can bore those cylinders out quite a bit or just over bore a little over time. You for sure can't beat the factory lower end they came with!

    The 99-02 were the best lower end. Swap out oil pump cam plate do springs in the head for bigger cam. Valve job. Gear drive cams if you can. Bigger bore 95/97 Great performing engine. Of course make sure it gets enough fuel.

    Hello Gixxer, good video, as always!, and I "Liked"-it. Please refresh my memory, what year did the TC-103 come out? Also, with the 2007 and 2008 TC-96 engines, the cranks often came with serious run-out from the factory. This was a financial problem for the MoCo, and so they changed the allowable running spec. on cranks to .012" in order to stop having to pay on warranty claims! The cranks and the integrated spring-pack compensators on these models were often pretty bad, Gixxer!

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 роки тому +2

      I don't they exactly fixed anything other than upping the crank spec, there were some bad cranks right out of the factory for sure. The 103 first appeared in 2003 on the Screamin Eagle models, then it was on police bikes and select touring models. In 2012 they put the 103 across the line finally though.

    I have an 88 tc, been running strong for over 6 years now, not one issue. It has a 2 into 1 pipe, jetted carb and open filter. I've owned many rice rockets back in the day and they were all fast as hell. There's just something about the 88, it just seems to pull really good for what it is. I've never had any issues keeping up with the 96, 103 etc. I've thought a couple of times about going with a 96 or 103, but I just feel it'd be a waste and not really worth the money.

    I've had all 3. 96 FXDC (stage 2), 96B FLSTC, 103 FLTRU and now an 88 FLHR all stage 1. The 96 stage 2 in a Dyna is a beast. 103 is by far the best in the touring model. Now that I have the ol' 88, it's going Cholo and will eventually get a stage 2 and that's about it. Yes, it took 4 bikes to figure out what I really like in a bike. She'll get broke open this winter to check the cam chain tensioner and if it looks bad, the Cam upgrade will happen much sooner than the pocket book says. The 96 and 103's all had Comp issues around 25,000 miles. Had I known the root cause was probably the auto tensioner, I'd have swapped it immediately.
    I will say, that factory 103 was a strong runner and is probably the best TC they made.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 роки тому +2

      A set of cams in a 88 really pours on the torque, good set of cams in your current 88 will be about perfect for the build you got going on. That sounds about right for compensator fail, as those primary chains stretch the auto tensioner takes up all that slack. Eventually something has to give and it's usually the expensive parts.

    Great vid. I own, or did own a 16 103 TC. She was great at first. But, suffered from terrible blow by. Added a catch can to stop all that oil from hitting my pistons, then realized how bad the problem was...
    She kept filling up every few hundred miles. Decided to have her torn down and upgrade the cylinders, and go from chain to gear drive HO cams. Found out my runout was at .0010... Not at all good. Regardless of what HD says.
    After a tear down I realized she was sumping pretty bad from the all the oil in the crank. Bad flywheel was likely the cause. I'd say if you're considering any HD long term, shore up the crank, weld it or add a timken. Other than that, the 103 was good to me.

He just past so I only got limited information from 1 from the person who lined up the sale and 2 the Harley-Davidson dealer ship where he bought it and had his work done. It has the Cobra full dual exhaust system with the crossover pipe oval air cleaner. Coming from a 2000 kawasaki vulcan 1500cc. The 103 has much more torque and feels comfortable on the highway. I plan on doing S&S big bore kit some time down the road and many other upgrades. For now I'm just looking at doing wood TW 222 cams want to know what the differences in 555 777 and so on. I plan on getting the kit from wood so pushrod lifters all that my problem is once I install everything how is the bike going to run tell I can get it in to be tuned because there about 5 weeks out on getting bikes in to tuning. I know down the road I'm going with a different cam setup after doing a big bore kit and all that but that's probably not going to happen for the next two years I just want to get as much out of what I have now and enjoy it more. It's personal preference but I went with Amsoil transmission primary and oil with there filter and changed out the plugs with NGK that it calls for personal preference and Screamin Eagle wires. I personally prefer to run recreational fuel the bike seems to have much more torque and throttle response over normal pump ethanol mixed gas. Some of them were absolutely beautiful bikes but with 30k plus miles and on the original tensioners its a ticking time bomb. And of course when I mention not being interested anymore because of the tensioners the seller gets super defensive saying the bike runs great. Im like yeah im sure it does until there's problems. I have often heard torque and horsepower treated as if they were independent quantities, In fact, brake horsepower is derived from a calculation that relies on torque: BHP = Torque X RPM / 5252. Defined simply, multiply the torque by the axis’s rotational speed per minute (RPM) and you’ll get the engine’s final power output. my guess is that when you talk about torque in positive terms, you often mean low end torque which is the same thing as relatively a lot of power (hp) at low revs.

    a friend of mine had a ultra classic . early 2000s, not sure which year. it had a 95" or 98" kit on it with cams and S&S heads. that thing ran . he loved it. sure there are faster bikes now but how much faster does one want to go? ticket fast or go to jail fast ? lol you can always upgrade a 96" to a 103" easy too if one wants too if i remember right and if you going to do that you could go a head and upgrade it to a Timkin main bearing too. it will take more time and money though. to me the beauty of the 103" is you can upgrade that with no machining to a 124"!! *rubs hands together with an evil laugh* lol though if you do that one should definitely upgrade the main bearing and any other stuff while they are there. it may cost you a wife and your soul but meh its a 124"!! lol. see this is the bad and good thing about Harleys sooo many options/ways to sell your soul lol. good vid

I had a weird rattle that would go away when i pulled in the clutch, I assumed it was the IPB but now that its off, my Chain is super loose. Now i'm faced with a dilemma..... Do i pull everything off and check the IPB or do i adjust my chain and close it up and test it.

    “Not a bad twin cam out there”………..Every one of them grenade without upgrades. Ohhhhhhkay!!!! I had 88 96 and 103. All had those issues you mentioned, why does Harley charge a premium, but have shit designs, with no power? I’ve always wondered that.

    • @GixxerFoo
      @GixxerFoo  2 роки тому +1

      The motors are really solid once you get the factory flubs out. Just my theory but in the 90's Harley couldn't keep up with demand on the production line and the Evo was likely too reliable. So with the Twin Cam they designed it to be assembled more quickly and the parts cast and machined with speed on the line in mind. Also failure points engineered in to generate demand for parts and service, just my theory though.

      Power is relative. In absolute terms, an 88 is really slow, but having the power of H2 R is useless. Who can go and maintain 400 km/h speed on a public road? Power means nothing on public roads. Low end torque is far more useful in those scenarios, and an 88 is absolute king if compared to any revvy bike. I've met people who have ditched their crotch rockets in favor of torquey motors that can handle 2 up easily. Power just means something exclusively in the racetrack.
