    "Having a heart attack was the best thing that ever happened to me," as Dean Ornish relates some patients' comments to be. Yep. Totally true for me. A blessing in disguise, leading me to life changing and life affirming shifts in diet and behavior, and leading me to appreciate the value of ALL life, including cows and pigs and chicks. Who knew? :)

      Gen129 - Indeed ... except that I don't think he's fully embraced living a vegan lifestyle, last I heard. Maybe he's progressed (I hope, for his sake), but he described eating a diet without meat, dairy, eggs, or oils as an unpleasant hardship, which it really doesn't need to be. It's actually a win/win!

      @@tspicks4360 He's definitely 100% plant based now. I saw his recent interview on the Men's Health Home Gym & Fridge video series. His daughter Harley Quinn has been vegan for a while, I think she finally convinced him after the heart attack. He looks to be really thriving!

      Gen129 - Good to hear. I hope he can get to actually being vegan, beyond just 100% plant based, as I think the ethical aspects of veganism are a reinforcing anchor to the health benefits of eating a plant based diet. Same with the environmental aspects. Anyway, glad he's still on track health-wise!

    Vitally important stuff. Dean Ornish saved my life with his book on reversing heart disease, which I read after having a heart attack 6 years ago. Literally changed my life in a major way. This man is a genius, with his ability to look outside mainstream patterns of belief and thought, and to explore that objectively and scientifically. Thanks Mic and Dean!

      Amen!!! I live with CHF - it is not cured like I once though, but I have lived with it for 10 years (my father died of it at age 58 in 1983), and this heart disease is totally controllable by everything I choose to put in my mouth!!! We all can cure, reverse, control and prevent disease in ourselves - education is power and health is wealth!!

    What’s also great about this discussion is that it debunks racist myths against Native/Indigenous health and health of minorities in oppressive systems. So many American doctors that come to Hawaii have an ingrained racist practice to the point of telling us Hawaiians “oh, you’re just prone this or that condition because you’re Hawaiian.”, and so many here take that entirely UNSCIENTIFIC and overtly racist comment (or practices) as absolute truth.

    I love this interview. I have high LDL not caused by diet. I inherited this one from my Dad. I get my blood work done annually. All of my other blood levels are fine, BP,, iron, b12, thyroid,, all good.. just high cholesterol,, dangerously high so I take my statin drug. I've been vegan, and mostly plant based for almost 2 years. I(just means that occasionally I have a beyond burger). My Doctor is a fan of my diet so I dont beleive that he is telling me to take the drugs 'just because'. He has told me that despite diet and lifestyle this one is permanent. A vegan diet is a great life for almost everything. Health, environment and my ethics. Just a note that it isnt always a cure all. I like that you touch on this. thanks

    • @paulg687
      @paulg687 3 роки тому

      Whatever diet that works for your body type is fine by me. Be a vegan, low carb, keto whatever. The main thing good diets do is remove a lot of the bad stuff. Different body types react differently to different diets. You should read some of the work with Nikolas Gonzalez and his varied treatments with different types.
      You really need to get this ‘dangerous’ high ldl out of your head though. The main purpose of ldl is to deliver triglycerides, it’s not cholesterol. You should look at your triglyceride level wrt your hdl. You want low triglycerides and high hdl. Doing a one off test to determine a statins decision is a really silly. First, cholesterol is required and regulated by your body. If it’s high, it’s high for a reason. Secondly, when you fast for a test, this gets your liver to create ldl and it will be high. Third, your diet previous to your test has a huge influence on your ldl. If you chomp on high fats 3 days before your test, it will actually LOWER your ldl in the test. Statins IMO are pointless and potentially extremely dangerous. Last point, people with lower ldl die of heart attacks just as high as the high ldl types. Don’t be obsessed with lowering your ldl to as low as it can be!

    I'd like to add...I also planned my pregnancy. So For 6 months even b4 trying (even tho I was already vegan for a few years) I went 6 months on a strict clean - almost completely raw vegan diet. Little to no processed foods. No alcohol. And started prenatal and vegan omega DHA and epa.(again I did this 6 months b4 even trying to get pregnant) I then tried and got pregnant on our 2nd try ...my son was so strong at birth. Head and neck was so strong from day 1 .. And now at 1 and half (and this isn't me just being a proud mama) but everyone ... i mean EVERYONE tells me he's so advanced and smart and knows so many words and its just that he seems to get attention from everyone due to his intelligence. He just seems way more advanced than kids his age. (And I dont know any vegan babies ear me) He also has only been sick once! Listen Idk if this is bc of how I did things but i think it's very interesting!!

      Do you have any info that I can use? I mean, why did you need to take omega? And almost raw? No legumes? We will start trying in October probably , well we need to have a conversation before, I'm not began jet, just at home, but she doesn't want to raise our kids as vegans, and I will be vegan soon but I was raise as a specist so its been hard for me, my point is, if I raise my child telling them the truth about meet industry they wont want to eat it, that's my hope.

      @@MrDavidSoro hi .. so I'm happy to share... well I wanted almost raw DURING the 6 months b4 trying. To lose weight n feel lighter n healthier .. idk I guess because I felt it was most natural and uncooked food for the most part has more nutrients..i did eat some cooked food n legumes but during that time I have to say I was like 70% raw give or take (while pregnant tho I DID eat more cooked foods) basically I felt healthier and cleaner. I didnt want processed food or chemicals in my system at all even 6 months b4 trying my husband did the same n no alcohol. Maybe it's a bit much. BUt we wanted to both be in optimal health even b4 conceiving. And as for vegan omega and Dha and epa it's super food 4 mama and fetus and helps with brain development .. look it up. When one becomes Heart centered one doesn't require anyThing to look forward to in order to enjoy life as the ensuing Love that Flows simply enjoys sustaining it's self and others. That is when one is no longer mind-isolated dominant, the mind needs future "treats" to feel motivated or to even stay alive in some cases

    great interview - thanks so much! i've had a ton of tabs open in my browser for days now on epigenetics, wanting to learn more, and now i can close them and read ornish's new book instead. ;)

    It’s worth noting NONE of this works without vegan diet being low fat- no oils, no fried foods. I’ve tested my lipids and saw no change after a year of vegan from my old meat and eggs diet. However once I finally kicked the oily dressings and sauces and French fries habit (thank god for air fryer no oil needed) I’m seeing dramatic changes that I must assume go along with epigenetic changes.
