The COMPLETE Music Genre Iceberg Explained

- My name is TenderDirector, and today I am taking a look at The Music Genre Iceberg. The further into the depths of the iceberg, the more obscure and odd the genres become. The topics on this list range from loved and recognizable to confusing and flat-out weird.

Ok I know not everyone is going to see this but before you comment "this is not the most in-depth iceberg video dude there's like a bajillion other more in-depth iceberg videos" or "why wasn't ____ on the list???" Yes I know, I was being sarcastic and I even mentioned this in the outro of the video and I also mentioned how I didn't create this iceberg and even acknowledge that this picture only has a small percentage of the vast majority of genres out there. I get that it's kind of a shitty video that's too long but watch the outro because I cleared up this stuff.

@@tenderdirector8958 sick dude, just finished
@@tenderdirector8958 just pin this comment
besides the iceberg's genre placement being absolutely unhinged, i thought this was a super in depth piece. learned a lot, love the vid
Definitely not in depth but that’s because it wasn’t supposed to be. Actually I think it couldn’t have been in depth taking into consideration that he tried to cover every genre of music. It’s just an intro of sorts to a ton of different genres. Commendable effort certainly
yeah like why is melodic death so far down? why is atmospheric black so far up? there are like, borderline normal genres in the 6th tier like math rock as well.
@@no12578 yeah he just read a general description of a genre and suggested a couple of the most known bands within it. You could kind of tell his knowledge (if any) of most genres was superficial at best and some of his takes were really bad. For example I don’t know if you listen to progressive metal but putting porcupine tree and Tool over Dream Theater and Opeth is honestly a disgrace to metal
Ja, I noticed this too. Artists like Aphex Twin, sophie, Burial, Flying Lotus, IglooGhost, Machine Girl, Death Grips, IDM (Genre), Industrial (anything), Post Rock (bands), Post Punk (Bands) were treated as if they were normal. As if they can be compared to Trap Rap and Pop Rock. In reality, these are highly experimental and avant-garde artists and genres that are super esoteric to the general public. There was also a few takes that missed the ball. For example, when talking about post punk and Alternative Rock, I think these bands are better described as being a more artistic and sensitive reaction to punk music and pop rock. Alternative Rock in particular is better described as a reaction to the experimental rock aesthetics emerging out of the 60s with bands like The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and Talking Heads. Therefore, approaching rock with a more artistic and experimental lens with bands like Radiohead, Nirvana, The Smiths, Twenty One Pilots (I know it's not the most virtuous example but theoretically it's true). I know this sounds nit picky and gate-keepy. To say the least, this video will trigger the experts, hah. It got on my nerves a little bit.
He kept mentioning the same bands or artists for multiple genres. Like dude there's other bands and artists that represent these genre pretty well
Dude, the best part is is that there are thousands of other genres he didn’t mention, which shows the beauty of music
I love how Screamo is in this iceberg but not emo itself since it has a pretty wide definition and is often misunderstood.
technically emo is there, it's just under post-hardcore, and to a lesser extent post-punk.
@@btuard Yea that's true
Where's the midwest emo?
@@Ergoperidot "Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

I realize this video is not actually a very in-depth look at music genres but I recently watched an iceberg video this long about death metal, just death metal, one sub-genre. What I'm trying to say here, is that no matter how much effort you put in, you're still going to miss a lot. One example of something missed was technical death metal, which includes bands like Archspire that are comprised of amazing musicians regardless of what genre you enjoy. I'm glad that you included melodic death metal, though, it includes some amazing bands like At the Gates.
I fucking love how in depth you can go in metal, I could talk for years, but not many people want to talk about it
tech death is its own entire iceberg fr
I watched a video discussing 170 different EDM genres and there were still some genres left out, so it is impossible to talk about every single genre even if you make a video of a week
And folk metal
I felt the same way. I am am avid country music listener and the only country music genre he had on here was "Country" itself. No Bluegrass, Appalachian, Western, Red Dirt, Texas, Outlaw, or Southern Rock at the least was on there. Thoroughly disappointed on that regard, gonna try and find a video like you said but for country music
Honestly, there's way too many genres missing for this to be considered complete...
Besides the basics (rap, funk, opera, classical, techno, house, jazz etc.) which for some reason were not included there are many other ones missing - such as speedcore, black MIDI, experimental, disco polo, chorals and so on.
Black midi is a genre? I only knew the band.
@@titiseetv7830 Search up Carlos S. M. or
Alexander Verevkin - they're perhaps the most popular creators of this genre.

Maybe some afrobeat, city pop, forró, fuck, i dunno, finnish polka
Experimental is not really a genre lol, like half the genres on here could be considered “experimental”
There’s a late 60’s band called Xhol Caravan that’s insanely psychedelic, even by today’s standards. I’m a little surprised they’re not more well-known because of how out there their music is
Wow, thanks! They sounds very interesting.
i'm listening to it, ty
Great video! As many of commentators noted that are quite a lot of genres not mentioned in this iceberg. I'll add the one that I particularly enjoy: generative electronics. Bohdan Stupak, Tony Lugo, Sunhaus, Mileece, Evol are a couple of artists to mention
You explained Krautrock and Zeuhl way better than the other music genre iceberg I watched! The other one didn't even mention Magma.. the band that literally founded the genre. Great stuff! subbed :)
Imagine talking about zeuhl but not mentioning Magma
Dude, do you know all this stuff from years of research? Because that's really impressive. I've never met someone so passionate about music before. I wish you the best on your UA-cam career.
Thank you so much! I got a lot of help from from wikis and rateyourmusic.com; honestly, I wasn’t familiar with everything on this list so those websites helped a lot

amazing work! whopping hour and a half video
this video made me get to know more music genres and some obsecure songs and i enjoyed it a lot
wow this was great! thanks for putting so much time into it!
It's always funny to see the genre biases of the people who make these icebergs. I saw another video that heavily focused on vaporwave, EDM, and grindcore variants. This one seems to focus a lot on rock, metal, noise, ambient, and industrial music, with kinda a music nerd's base understanding of other genres. If I were to make an iceberg, it would probably center folk, prog, classical, and traditional forms of music. I think taking a holistic approach will always skew results based on preferences like this, so making individual icebergs for each notable genre heading (rock, folk, R&B, punk, hip hop, industrial, etc.) with a somewhat standardized metric that can be used when cross-referencing charts is probably a better way to go about it.
I’m just tryna find a all genre but the comments of them that I seen say the same 😭 this one’s even worse
Dude thats a great idea
Great video, although i don’t know if anyone else has mentioned it yet but suicidal depressive black metal is normally called depressive suicidal black metal and shortened to DSBM! :)
This was so interesting!! Thank you for making this, have found a lot of new music to listen to by watching!
excellent video!!! thanks for taking the time to make it
Absolutely unhinged placement from whoever made the iceberg - how did melodeath and death n' roll get below regular death metal lol, but you've made an absolutely excellent video from it either way. I find it crazy how you could make a similarly sized list out of just metal subgenres if you tried.
One of the worst things about being an artist is that you're having a hard time identifying exactly what genre music you make. We say we make electronic pop, but then there's other artists that make electronic pop that don't sound anything like us. 🤷♂
Frank Zappa put it best when he said his music is labled "variety".

This was so entertaining and informative! Thank you!
Fairly informative iceberg! I appreciate the explanations and examples, and it is always nice to see illbient mentioned anywhere.
I think other genres and movements could have been touched on for the lower tiers.
I was surprised to see no mention of Phonk considering it's similar situation with dubstep (having an origin almost completely different to what has been made generally known) it has plenty of niche subgenres too, with Drift Phonk being the most popular and most regarded as Phonk (similar with Brostep being the most known form of Dubstep during the mainstream success of Skrillex) it probably could of found it's place in tier 3 or 4.
Japanoise is a fairly straightforward one, noise music originating from Japan, probably on tier 3 due to Merzbow's fame alone.
Zamrock is a distinct style of psychedelic rock with a particular kind of production to it originating from Zambia, it takes influence from heavy metal bands but somewhat more like acid rock. It's origins go back to the 50s and there are documentaries on it. W.I.T.C.H are probably the most known band from this genre, which are somewhat still active to this day and were founded back in 1973.
Vomitcore is exactly what you think it is; grindcore with an emphasis on vomiting sounds, definitely bottom tier due to less bands that you can count on your hands only exist for it.
Futurist Music is a fascinating one to look into. There is only a handful of recordings of it that are around the 1920s, but what makes it interesting is how the music was made under the belief that it was ahead of its time with strange instruments being invented to play it and most of them just being droney or unusual, accompanying other weird things such as futurist food and art. It was fairly similar to Dadaist movements and had a manifesto with it too.
A great source for ever expanding on quite literally every genre would be a website called everynoise or Every Noise at once, and it genuinely has thousands upon thousands of niche genres in there, many of them are genres in particular countries (Italo-Disco, Rap Metal Espanol, Hungarian Rock etc.) but there are a lot of niche ones. Clicking on any will play and example, and you can always find more artists linked to said genre from there too. The most fun part is you can get a hoodie with all of the genres written on it from the website.
glad to see you mention phonk. unfortunate how its going through the same stages as dubstep.

1:05:20 they're actually pronounced like "Tree-Ko" (french word), other than that, pretty much no complaints, great vid, I was a bit worried you wouldn't know much about the different metal genres as many people don't but I'm glad you've done your research! Must've been a grueling task to look into the entire iceberg.
good video! i kinda missed bossa nova, but i know its kinda impossible to include every single genre in just one video
Thank god someone notuced hahah a its kinda nainstream.
love the use of tool's music vid for sober on the prog metal part.
USEFUL and GREAT VIDEO
thanks my brother
Gotta say props to you for actually researching the genres more. I’ve seen another music genre iceberg video that had some pretentious idiot just reading the first sentence of the Wikipedias. He Got almost all the metal subgenres horribly wrong too. Good job to you sir.
alot of this you can tell is just from rym though and the albums/bands he picked are just the most popular ones
I think this is a rly good broad iceberg :o theres subgenres to everything so you cant cover it all. i wish it had gabber and jungle music tho! (sorry if there is those and i just missed it.) also i love happy hardcore so much :D thanks for talking about it so nicely.
W music taste, GABBER4LIFE
great vid, but just to add something I think "tape music" is supposed to refer to "musique concrete" which is when in the 60s and 70s artists used short clips of sounds from regular life or warped instrument sounds to create weird sound collages, its pretty avant garde and generally seen as unlistenable due to the lack of normal vocals and instrumentation but is highly influential as it paved the way for sampling and electronic music later. By far the most infamous example is the beatles song "revolution 9" from the white album in 1968.
Experimental music and pop, that makes good music to me. This’s good video man, good job.
The godfathers of black metal where not mentioned. Venom is where it all started.
Great video! I really like your passion and you really know a lot! I think one of the biggest genres that should be included is Funeral Doom Metal. It is actually quite a big genre with lots of great artists and it's quite different from traditional doom metal
Actually, now that I'm looking at the genre list, even Doom Metal isn't included
Also Gothic Metal is missing
@l sludge is in there, but it's easy to miss. it's also missing technical death: no archspire :(
They're also missing metalcore
Also, for math rock they didn't even mention chon, polyphia, or covet! why? And they didn't even mention AAL for Prog metal
I loved the video! Thank you!
thanks this video gave me a much greater understanding of the different genres of music
1:19:44 He really said “cockatoo twins” hahaha
it's funnier that way, imagine a pair of identical birds playing music
Gotta say freak folk is such an underrated genre. Comus' First Utterance and Exuma's self titled are incredibly unique experiences that gave me something i've never felt before.
comus and exuma are so fucking good
i love that you included dsbm 🖤
Superb editing. Good video, hope to see you do more cool things in the future!
I think Tape Music is a mislabel, there's a few tape based genres currently, called; Beat Tape(which is heavily inspired by Boombap, Memphis Rap, PlunderPhoniks, and Burner music culture) and Tapephonk(which is an evolution of the concept on Trillphonk, Horrorcore, and Trillwave, except specifically as a Cassette product)
I felt pain when he said “Bands like The Beatles…David Bowie”
Nice information man ❤
really good quality for such an underrated small channel! Over qualified, even!
It is impossible to record each and every genre of music that ever existed! This is a very good attempt but let me note that nearly all these iceberg videos refer to western and western influenced *popular music*. The list goes on for many more hours if we decide to include music traditions from all regions around the world and from older times. As a musicology student that's what I find fascinating!
Do you have a RYM account? I’d like to explore your favourite records. I really agree with many of your points and examples!!
Thanks man! And yeah my username is Beaverball
damn, all the stuff I listen to is at least in tier 5. I'm glad I recognized 90% of the artists you mentioned too, including some I know a lot of people are missing out on
Cool video! Got alot of inspiration from it.
58:40 Thank you so much for shouting our Ryuichi Sakamoto, he is an amazing artist
Edit: *out
Well if you want good song writing in progressive metal you should check out Opeth. They take a while to get into but when you do, boy you´ll always be in that trancendant state.
its kinda crazy how many of those genres “Third side of tape” by Lil Ugly Mane fits in… ofc it fits more other genres that wasnt mentioned… such an underrated piece of material
This is way better, appealing, more detailed and more interesting than the other gys tierlist
this was a fun video. to include every genre might result in a 5 hour video.. if not longer. cant blame you for that. this one is a lot better than that other idiots genre iceberg because your artist example was generally excellent
more like 20 or 30 hours. TBH it would be great to just have a long running series with 30-40 min videos on every genre and subgenre.
For post-rock id say I am no hero, often the thinker, hubris., svefn, whale fall and silent island are good listening experiences, and getting further away from these sounds autumn creatures, the numenorean, chainsaw for birthday, two of my favourites that i would put kind of apart are Ephilexia (a project bass centric band derived from silent island) and in each hand a cutlass.
Cool video you added breakcore thank you i love breakcore.
As someone who makes very loud music (gabber which you mentioned in the outro i think i love gabber so much) i approve this video.
i like how u mention Ween despite they could be mentioned in any of these entries lol Great Viddddddddd
You have a mistake in the hard rock section Hey Joe was written and played by Jimi Hendrix but Led zeppelin did a cover of it in the 70s but the version that was playing was definitely the Jimi Hendrix version
Yes, you are correct, but also incorrect aswell. You see you're right about that being not being Jimmi Hendrix in the video, that is Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, but here's where your incorrect statement comes in. Jimi Hendrix did not write Hey Joe either, that was Billy Roberts. Hendrix covered it and it got popular.
Neofolk is such an underrated genre, it has some very interesting stuff
I've never listened to any neofolk albums, but I've been getting really into psychedelic folk recently. Any albums you'd recommend?
@@ericzhang7658 I'm a bit late to this and tbh don't really know what neofolk is but check out Maaäet from Tenhi
Amazing video!
This video is going to explode and I'm proud to say that I was here before it happened.
Also, great video, my man.
Hi-NRG is tier 7? I'm assuming you're not including Rick Astley for some reason? I could see maybe putting Italo Disco up there somewhere, but Hi-NRG dominated the pop charts everywhere for like 5 years.
isnt it just eurobeat
@@xcxjcxfjff5656 Eurobeat was a little more underground and club/single oriented IIRC. Hi-NRG was like the cheesefest Stock Aiken Waterman stuff. I guess they evolved around the same time from italo disco.
Metalcore is high up on the list as it is probably the most popular and mainstream form of metal in the 21st century. The late 2000s/early 2010s metalcore and post-hardcore bands enjoyed a lot of mainstream success. Asking Alexandria, Sleeping With Sirens, Pierce the Veil, Bring Me The Horizon etc. Also, poppy modern metalcore like Bad Omens have become really big over the past few years.
Here in South Africa, we have a Sub-genre of Hip-hop called Kwaito. Think of it as "Tribal hip-hop"
Look up Zola7 and Mandoza, as some popular examples
I wish this had 7 billion views. And people did research like you did. 🖤 great vid mi boi
This should really be renamed to "Modern Music Iceberg". These are all genres from the last 60ish years
Sad to see no mention of the distinct subgenres skapunk and slamming brutal death metal and the sub-subgenre crackrocksteady (ska-core but more crusty/lofi)
Despite lacking some it was very informative and entertaining regardless.
In the future i hope to hear depressive suicidal reggae metal or something similar would be very cool
I'm hoping to hear depressive suicidal ragtime/lowercase metal.
If sub-sub-subgenres were included, this video could have been a week long
the fuck is depressive suicidal reggae metal or crackrocksteady
I refuse to believe you didn't make this on the spot
@@rayres1074 reggae metal is unfortunately non-existent but crackrocksteady is a legit genre but to be fair is hard to distinguish from ska-core
@@alexdeschipper3708 raggae metal is undoubtedly a thing but suicidal depressive version of that? Now that's just wild
i didn’t expect ds to be on here but i’m happy it is haha
Industrial metal coming before first wave industrial is the listening order
It goes
NIN -> Ministry -> KMFDM -> godflesh ->skinny puppy -> Coil -> Ramleh -> EZN -> psychic TV -> throbbing gristle -> then if you’re still here for it Japanoise, harsh noise wall, power electronics etc
That’s the proper listening order to get into industrial music, it’s one of the most misunderstood genres out there and you really have to listen to it backwards if you’ve never had any introduction to it
Fear Factory - Demanufacture is an essential Industrial metal album
I'm sorry to ruin it for you but this is not even close to all genres that exist, this is just a lot of the most known ones
but still, good job for researching all of that
honestly if he covered EVERY SINGLE MUSIC GENRE THAT HAS EVER EXISTED...this video will be 10 hours long lmao
@@tannerocean6682 only 10 hours? bro if he were to cover all the genres in existence my guy could start a movie series longer than the marvel cinematic universe
@@leliliddellisin omg you're right
@@leliliddellisin imagine all the microgenres and music scenes with unique sounds. That's going to be a 2 week lecture
Yeah it would be literally impossible to cover every genre of music that ever existed but this is pretty comprehensive for the electronic music genres.
Great video!
Where are my favorite genres? Blackgaze? Funeral doom metal? Breakcore?
Thats the comment i looking for. Breakcore is here but i dont know which genres are similar with. Have you got an advice ? Maybe like igorrr
So many basics missing. Folk, mariachi, tango, polka, waltz, world music, swing, Celtic, opera, classical (including Gregorian chant early music, Renaissance music, baroque music, classical music, romantic music, Impressionism), show tunes, swing, Indian classical, jazz (including Dixieland, smooth jazz, hot jazz), easy listening, traditional/classic pop; just to name a few.
