it’s mostly because of the fact that words like “pop”, “rock”, and “rap” are way too wide in terms of subgenres to get a single entry on the list, so instead sub-genres of these are entries instead.
Definitely not in depth but that’s because it wasn’t supposed to be. Actually I think it couldn’t have been in depth taking into consideration that he tried to cover every genre of music. It’s just an intro of sorts to a ton of different genres. Commendable effort certainly
yeah like why is melodic death so far down? why is atmospheric black so far up? there are like, borderline normal genres in the 6th tier like math rock as well.
@@no12578 yeah he just read a general description of a genre and suggested a couple of the most known bands within it. You could kind of tell his knowledge (if any) of most genres was superficial at best and some of his takes were really bad. For example I don’t know if you listen to progressive metal but putting porcupine tree and Tool over Dream Theater and Opeth is honestly a disgrace to metal
Ja, I noticed this too. Artists like Aphex Twin, sophie, Burial, Flying Lotus, IglooGhost, Machine Girl, Death Grips, IDM (Genre), Industrial (anything), Post Rock (bands), Post Punk (Bands) were treated as if they were normal. As if they can be compared to Trap Rap and Pop Rock. In reality, these are highly experimental and avant-garde artists and genres that are super esoteric to the general public. There was also a few takes that missed the ball. For example, when talking about post punk and Alternative Rock, I think these bands are better described as being a more artistic and sensitive reaction to punk music and pop rock. Alternative Rock in particular is better described as a reaction to the experimental rock aesthetics emerging out of the 60s with bands like The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and Talking Heads. Therefore, approaching rock with a more artistic and experimental lens with bands like Radiohead, Nirvana, The Smiths, Twenty One Pilots (I know it's not the most virtuous example but theoretically it's true). I know this sounds nit picky and gate-keepy. To say the least, this video will trigger the experts, hah. It got on my nerves a little bit.
@@Ergoperidot "Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE
I realize this video is not actually a very in-depth look at music genres but I recently watched an iceberg video this long about death metal, just death metal, one sub-genre. What I'm trying to say here, is that no matter how much effort you put in, you're still going to miss a lot. One example of something missed was technical death metal, which includes bands like Archspire that are comprised of amazing musicians regardless of what genre you enjoy. I'm glad that you included melodic death metal, though, it includes some amazing bands like At the Gates.
I watched a video discussing 170 different EDM genres and there were still some genres left out, so it is impossible to talk about every single genre even if you make a video of a week
I felt the same way. I am am avid country music listener and the only country music genre he had on here was "Country" itself. No Bluegrass, Appalachian, Western, Red Dirt, Texas, Outlaw, or Southern Rock at the least was on there. Thoroughly disappointed on that regard, gonna try and find a video like you said but for country music
Honestly, there's way too many genres missing for this to be considered complete... Besides the basics (rap, funk, opera, classical, techno, house, jazz etc.) which for some reason were not included there are many other ones missing - such as speedcore, black MIDI, experimental, disco polo, chorals and so on.
There’s a late 60’s band called Xhol Caravan that’s insanely psychedelic, even by today’s standards. I’m a little surprised they’re not more well-known because of how out there their music is
I finally finished watching. I loved. Congratulations on the work, it made me see which styles I already really like and others close to the styles I like. In addition to news that made me very curious! Great Job!
It's always funny to see the genre biases of the people who make these icebergs. I saw another video that heavily focused on vaporwave, EDM, and grindcore variants. This one seems to focus a lot on rock, metal, noise, ambient, and industrial music, with kinda a music nerd's base understanding of other genres. If I were to make an iceberg, it would probably center folk, prog, classical, and traditional forms of music. I think taking a holistic approach will always skew results based on preferences like this, so making individual icebergs for each notable genre heading (rock, folk, R&B, punk, hip hop, industrial, etc.) with a somewhat standardized metric that can be used when cross-referencing charts is probably a better way to go about it.
@@MaulwurfBuddelflink Nah, thats bs. It's just an umbrella term for music thats is made for dancing which includes most of techno, house, dnb and much more. Calling most of it crappy is just stupid.
You explained Krautrock and Zeuhl way better than the other music genre iceberg I watched! The other one didn't even mention Magma.. the band that literally founded the genre. Great stuff! subbed :)
“All music genres ever” you say 🤣 boy imma prove you wrong. Hekhem. So. Where is: Hardstyle, Rawstyle, Phonk, Drum and Bass, Neuro DnB, Jungle, Minimal, Jazz, Blues, Psytrance, Synthwave, PsyDub, Acid, Progressive Psy, GoaPsy-Trance, Dub Techno, Techno, Deep Tech, Liquid DnB, (joke entry) Elevator Music, UK Drill, German Ghetto Rap (like Gzuz or Sido), Danish Ghetto Rap etc???
Great video, although i don’t know if anyone else has mentioned it yet but suicidal depressive black metal is normally called depressive suicidal black metal and shortened to DSBM! :)
Absolutely unhinged placement from whoever made the iceberg - how did melodeath and death n' roll get below regular death metal lol, but you've made an absolutely excellent video from it either way. I find it crazy how you could make a similarly sized list out of just metal subgenres if you tried.
This gets a huge down vote for not following the traditional iceberg format where you start with the most popular or best known terms and then work your way down to obscurity. This is demonstrated by the VERY first entry being something called “electro swing” - I probably wouldn’t even put Swing itself in Tier 1 (Jazz itself, yes), much a blend with something else. If they can’t even follow the basic iceberg concept… this isn’t worth my time (and it also suggests that I know more than they do - maybe I should make one !)
Dude, do you know all this stuff from years of research? Because that's really impressive. I've never met someone so passionate about music before. I wish you the best on your UA-cam career.
Thank you so much! I got a lot of help from from wikis and rateyourmusic.com; honestly, I wasn’t familiar with everything on this list so those websites helped a lot
@@stevencooper3202 dude, I major in that shit, no the fuck it's not. I know a guy who didn't know Metalcore was a thing until meeting me. Fucking METALCORE, the shit that dominated underground scenes from '05-'10.
One of the worst things about being an artist is that you're having a hard time identifying exactly what genre music you make. We say we make electronic pop, but then there's other artists that make electronic pop that don't sound anything like us. 🤷♂
had this problem when i was looking for music that sounds similar to "i didnt mean to haunt you" by quadeca. everyone says its folktronica, but you search up folktronica and it sounds completely different.
@@proddubby gave it a listen, it seems like simply alternative hip hop/rap. sounds like something XXXTentacion, Tyler The Creator and the like would do nowadays.
I think metalcore is on level one is because its gotten verry diverse over the years to the point where almost all of modern metal/heavier rock music can be considered metalcore in some way or form
Great video! As many of commentators noted that are quite a lot of genres not mentioned in this iceberg. I'll add the one that I particularly enjoy: generative electronics. Bohdan Stupak, Tony Lugo, Sunhaus, Mileece, Evol are a couple of artists to mention
As was already said, this iceberg is cool but heavily biased towards certain genres and subgenres and absolutely nowhere near complete... here are some categories from the top of my head - classical music, trance, techno, house, disco, chillstep, etc. and maybe even "instrumental music" and "epic music" which are sometimes presented as it's own genre Also, there are like 4 folk subgenres but not actual folk itself... just weird
Unless I missed it, I didn’t see the Canterbury Scene in this video. It’s one of my favorite genres with a rich history. Soft Machine, Caravan, and Robert Wyatt are a few things you should check out. I’m also glad you brought up Magma when you mentioned Zeuhl. I’ve seen another video on this topic that left them out. Btw everyone should listen to Comus. First Utterance is in my top 5 favorite albums.
Here in South Africa, we have a Sub-genre of Hip-hop called Kwaito. Think of it as "Tribal hip-hop" Look up Zola7 and Mandoza, as some popular examples
Metalcore is high up on the list as it is probably the most popular and mainstream form of metal in the 21st century. The late 2000s/early 2010s metalcore and post-hardcore bands enjoyed a lot of mainstream success. Asking Alexandria, Sleeping With Sirens, Pierce the Veil, Bring Me The Horizon etc. Also, poppy modern metalcore like Bad Omens have become really big over the past few years.
Gotta say freak folk is such an underrated genre. Comus' First Utterance and Exuma's self titled are incredibly unique experiences that gave me something i've never felt before.
You have a mistake in the hard rock section Hey Joe was written and played by Jimi Hendrix but Led zeppelin did a cover of it in the 70s but the version that was playing was definitely the Jimi Hendrix version
Yes, you are correct, but also incorrect aswell. You see you're right about that being not being Jimmi Hendrix in the video, that is Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, but here's where your incorrect statement comes in. Jimi Hendrix did not write Hey Joe either, that was Billy Roberts. Hendrix covered it and it got popular.
So many basics missing. Folk, mariachi, tango, polka, waltz, world music, swing, Celtic, opera, classical (including Gregorian chant early music, Renaissance music, baroque music, classical music, romantic music, Impressionism), show tunes, swing, Indian classical, jazz (including Dixieland, smooth jazz, hot jazz), easy listening, traditional/classic pop; just to name a few.
No eurodance? No beatbox? No wintersynth? No sea shanties? No oriental extreme metal? No neurofunk? No wizard rock? Great video, but that's one odd iceberg - there's a lot missing, and the order is super random ;-)
It is impossible to record each and every genre of music that ever existed! This is a very good attempt but let me note that nearly all these iceberg videos refer to western and western influenced *popular music*. The list goes on for many more hours if we decide to include music traditions from all regions around the world and from older times. As a musicology student that's what I find fascinating!
its kinda crazy how many of those genres “Third side of tape” by Lil Ugly Mane fits in… ofc it fits more other genres that wasnt mentioned… such an underrated piece of material
Industrial metal coming before first wave industrial is the listening order It goes NIN -> Ministry -> KMFDM -> godflesh ->skinny puppy -> Coil -> Ramleh -> EZN -> psychic TV -> throbbing gristle -> then if you’re still here for it Japanoise, harsh noise wall, power electronics etc That’s the proper listening order to get into industrial music, it’s one of the most misunderstood genres out there and you really have to listen to it backwards if you’ve never had any introduction to it
Gotta say props to you for actually researching the genres more. I’ve seen another music genre iceberg video that had some pretentious idiot just reading the first sentence of the Wikipedias. He Got almost all the metal subgenres horribly wrong too. Good job to you sir.
3:28 Yes, there’s a reason why Uncut Gems & Good Time soundtracks and The Weeknd all sound similar, they are all produced by Oneohtrix Point Never. He also pioneered vaporwave which is so interesting
Thrash metal is probably lower because Metallica is insanely popular, yes, but they gained most of that recognition from the Black Album, which turns away from thrash in favor of a more traditional heavy metal style. A large portion of Metallica 'fans' probably only know the Black Album, a select few songs off of the first 4 albums like The Four Horsemen, FWTBT, Master of Puppets, and One. Additionally, Metallica is the exception, even the rest of the big 4 of thrash (Megadeth, Anthrax, and Slayer) have nowhere near the same popularity.
Holy sht. This is the longest high quality video with "love" in it, I ever saw. It must mean, that this is an important topic to you (and many others), Ill definetly watch this when I have anough focused time!!
I'm sorry to ruin it for you but this is not even close to all genres that exist, this is just a lot of the most known ones but still, good job for researching all of that
@@tannerocean6682 only 10 hours? bro if he were to cover all the genres in existence my guy could start a movie series longer than the marvel cinematic universe
Yeah it would be literally impossible to cover every genre of music that ever existed but this is pretty comprehensive for the electronic music genres.
The small moment for death metal was nice, but it’s funny that is the tip of a massive iceberg. Death Metal probably has more sub genres than most standard genres of music. Example: Brutal Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Blackened Death Metal, Slamming Brutal Death Metal, Technical Death Metal, etc.
Fairly informative iceberg! I appreciate the explanations and examples, and it is always nice to see illbient mentioned anywhere. I think other genres and movements could have been touched on for the lower tiers. I was surprised to see no mention of Phonk considering it's similar situation with dubstep (having an origin almost completely different to what has been made generally known) it has plenty of niche subgenres too, with Drift Phonk being the most popular and most regarded as Phonk (similar with Brostep being the most known form of Dubstep during the mainstream success of Skrillex) it probably could of found it's place in tier 3 or 4. Japanoise is a fairly straightforward one, noise music originating from Japan, probably on tier 3 due to Merzbow's fame alone. Zamrock is a distinct style of psychedelic rock with a particular kind of production to it originating from Zambia, it takes influence from heavy metal bands but somewhat more like acid rock. It's origins go back to the 50s and there are documentaries on it. W.I.T.C.H are probably the most known band from this genre, which are somewhat still active to this day and were founded back in 1973. Vomitcore is exactly what you think it is; grindcore with an emphasis on vomiting sounds, definitely bottom tier due to less bands that you can count on your hands only exist for it. Futurist Music is a fascinating one to look into. There is only a handful of recordings of it that are around the 1920s, but what makes it interesting is how the music was made under the belief that it was ahead of its time with strange instruments being invented to play it and most of them just being droney or unusual, accompanying other weird things such as futurist food and art. It was fairly similar to Dadaist movements and had a manifesto with it too. A great source for ever expanding on quite literally every genre would be a website called everynoise or Every Noise at once, and it genuinely has thousands upon thousands of niche genres in there, many of them are genres in particular countries (Italo-Disco, Rap Metal Espanol, Hungarian Rock etc.) but there are a lot of niche ones. Clicking on any will play and example, and you can always find more artists linked to said genre from there too. The most fun part is you can get a hoodie with all of the genres written on it from the website.
Poggers, someone mentioning the absence of one of todays most explosively popular genres, phonk. Also missing dark trap, shadow rap, new-school memphis and the like from a similar bubble of music.
Classical music of the romantic period is the best genre ever made and you can't deny! But Bach was the best musician that ever walked the earth (and Beethoven).
I think Tape Music is a mislabel, there's a few tape based genres currently, called; Beat Tape(which is heavily inspired by Boombap, Memphis Rap, PlunderPhoniks, and Burner music culture) and Tapephonk(which is an evolution of the concept on Trillphonk, Horrorcore, and Trillwave, except specifically as a Cassette product)
Forgot alternative metal, nu metal, funk metal, epic doom, death doom, funeral doom, tech death, brutal death, dissonant death, gothic, black n roll, black noise, deathgrind, goregrind, neoclassical metal
Well if you want good song writing in progressive metal you should check out Opeth. They take a while to get into but when you do, boy you´ll always be in that trancendant state.

Absolute legend, I’ll try to put this in the description
@@tenderdirector8958 sick dude, just finished
@@tenderdirector8958 just pin this comment
i like how this implies electro swing is the most widely known genre to exist
it’s mostly because of the fact that words like “pop”, “rock”, and “rap” are way too wide in terms of subgenres to get a single entry on the list, so instead sub-genres of these are entries instead.
besides the iceberg's genre placement being absolutely unhinged, i thought this was a super in depth piece. learned a lot, love the vid
He kept mentioning the same bands or artists for multiple genres. Like dude there's other bands and artists that represent these genre pretty well

I fucking love how in depth you can go in metal, I could talk for years, but not many people want to talk about it
tech death is its own entire iceberg fr
I watched a video discussing 170 different EDM genres and there were still some genres left out, so it is impossible to talk about every single genre even if you make a video of a week
And folk metal

I’m just tryna find a all genre but the comments of them that I seen say the same 😭 this one’s even worse
Dude thats a great idea
Always hate it when icebergs like this include "edm" - it's more an umbrella term than a genre tho

It goes
NIN -> Ministry -> KMFDM -> godflesh ->skinny puppy -> Coil -> Ramleh -> EZN -> psychic TV -> throbbing gristle -> then if you’re still here for it Japanoise, harsh noise wall, power electronics etc
