  • My name is TenderDirector, and today I am taking a look at The Music Genre Iceberg. The further into the depths of the iceberg, the more obscure and odd the genres become. The topics on this list range from loved and recognizable to confusing and flat-out weird.

Ok I know not everyone is going to see this but before you comment "this is not the most in-depth iceberg video dude there's like a bajillion other more in-depth iceberg videos" or "why wasn't ____ on the list???" Yes I know, I was being sarcastic and I even mentioned this in the outro of the video and I also mentioned how I didn't create this iceberg and even acknowledge that this picture only has a small percentage of the vast majority of genres out there. I get that it's kind of a shitty video that's too long but watch the outro because I cleared up this stuff.

Definitely not in depth but that’s because it wasn’t supposed to be. Actually I think it couldn’t have been in depth taking into consideration that he tried to cover every genre of music. It’s just an intro of sorts to a ton of different genres. Commendable effort certainly

@@no12578 yeah he just read a general description of a genre and suggested a couple of the most known bands within it. You could kind of tell his knowledge (if any) of most genres was superficial at best and some of his takes were really bad. For example I don’t know if you listen to progressive metal but putting porcupine tree and Tool over Dream Theater and Opeth is honestly a disgrace to metal

Ja, I noticed this too. Artists like Aphex Twin, sophie, Burial, Flying Lotus, IglooGhost, Machine Girl, Death Grips, IDM (Genre), Industrial (anything), Post Rock (bands), Post Punk (Bands) were treated as if they were normal. As if they can be compared to Trap Rap and Pop Rock. In reality, these are highly experimental and avant-garde artists and genres that are super esoteric to the general public. There was also a few takes that missed the ball. For example, when talking about post punk and Alternative Rock, I think these bands are better described as being a more artistic and sensitive reaction to punk music and pop rock. Alternative Rock in particular is better described as a reaction to the experimental rock aesthetics emerging out of the 60s with bands like The Velvet Underground, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and Talking Heads. Therefore, approaching rock with a more artistic and experimental lens with bands like Radiohead, Nirvana, The Smiths, Twenty One Pilots (I know it's not the most virtuous example but theoretically it's true). I know this sounds nit picky and gate-keepy. To say the least, this video will trigger the experts, hah. It got on my nerves a little bit.

@@Ergoperidot "Real Emo" only consists of the dc Emotional Hardcore scene and the late 90's Screamo scene. What is known by "Midwest Emo" is nothing but Alternative Rock with questionable real emo influence. When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness). Real emo sounds ENERGETIC, POWERFUL and somewhat HATEFUL. Fake emo is weak, self pity and a failed attempt to direct energy and emotion into music. Some examples of REAL EMO are Pg 99, Rites of Spring, Cap n Jazz (the only real emo band from the midwest scene) and Loma Prieta. Some examples of FAKE EMO are American Football, My Chemical Romance and Mineral EMO BELONGS TO HARDCORE NOT TO INDIE, POP PUNK, ALT ROCK OR ANY OTHER MAINSTREAM GENRE

I realize this video is not actually a very in-depth look at music genres but I recently watched an iceberg video this long about death metal, just death metal, one sub-genre. What I'm trying to say here, is that no matter how much effort you put in, you're still going to miss a lot. One example of something missed was technical death metal, which includes bands like Archspire that are comprised of amazing musicians regardless of what genre you enjoy. I'm glad that you included melodic death metal, though, it includes some amazing bands like At the Gates.

It's always funny to see the genre biases of the people who make these icebergs. I saw another video that heavily focused on vaporwave, EDM, and grindcore variants. This one seems to focus a lot on rock, metal, noise, ambient, and industrial music, with kinda a music nerd's base understanding of other genres. If I were to make an iceberg, it would probably center folk, prog, classical, and traditional forms of music. I think taking a holistic approach will always skew results based on preferences like this, so making individual icebergs for each notable genre heading (rock, folk, R&B, punk, hip hop, industrial, etc.) with a somewhat standardized metric that can be used when cross-referencing charts is probably a better way to go about it.

Fairly informative iceberg! I appreciate the explanations and examples, and it is always nice to see illbient mentioned anywhere.
I think other genres and movements could have been touched on for the lower tiers.
I was surprised to see no mention of Phonk considering it's similar situation with dubstep (having an origin almost completely different to what has been made generally known) it has plenty of niche subgenres too, with Drift Phonk being the most popular and most regarded as Phonk (similar with Brostep being the most known form of Dubstep during the mainstream success of Skrillex) it probably could of found it's place in tier 3 or 4.
Japanoise is a fairly straightforward one, noise music originating from Japan, probably on tier 3 due to Merzbow's fame alone.
Zamrock is a distinct style of psychedelic rock with a particular kind of production to it originating from Zambia, it takes influence from heavy metal bands but somewhat more like acid rock. It's origins go back to the 50s and there are documentaries on it. W.I.T.C.H are probably the most known band from this genre, which are somewhat still active to this day and were founded back in 1973.
Vomitcore is exactly what you think it is; grindcore with an emphasis on vomiting sounds, definitely bottom tier due to less bands that you can count on your hands only exist for it.
Futurist Music is a fascinating one to look into. There is only a handful of recordings of it that are around the 1920s, but what makes it interesting is how the music was made under the belief that it was ahead of its time with strange instruments being invented to play it and most of them just being droney or unusual, accompanying other weird things such as futurist food and art. It was fairly similar to Dadaist movements and had a manifesto with it too.
A great source for ever expanding on quite literally every genre would be a website called everynoise or Every Noise at once, and it genuinely has thousands upon thousands of niche genres in there, many of them are genres in particular countries (Italo-Disco, Rap Metal Espanol, Hungarian Rock etc.) but there are a lot of niche ones. Clicking on any will play and example, and you can always find more artists linked to said genre from there too. The most fun part is you can get a hoodie with all of the genres written on it from the website.

great vid, but just to add something I think "tape music" is supposed to refer to "musique concrete" which is when in the 60s and 70s artists used short clips of sounds from regular life or warped instrument sounds to create weird sound collages, its pretty avant garde and generally seen as unlistenable due to the lack of normal vocals and instrumentation but is highly influential as it paved the way for sampling and electronic music later. By far the most infamous example is the beatles song "revolution 9" from the white album in 1968.

Hi-NRG is tier 7? I'm assuming you're not including Rick Astley for some reason? I could see maybe putting Italo Disco up there somewhere, but Hi-NRG dominated the pop charts everywhere for like 5 years.

Metalcore is high up on the list as it is probably the most popular and mainstream form of metal in the 21st century. The late 2000s/early 2010s metalcore and post-hardcore bands enjoyed a lot of mainstream success. Asking Alexandria, Sleeping With Sirens, Pierce the Veil, Bring Me The Horizon etc. Also, poppy modern metalcore like Bad Omens have become really big over the past few years.

Look up Zola7 and Mandoza, as some popular examples

Sad to see no mention of the distinct subgenres skapunk and slamming brutal death metal and the sub-subgenre crackrocksteady (ska-core but more crusty/lofi)
Despite lacking some it was very informative and entertaining regardless.
In the future i hope to hear depressive suicidal reggae metal or something similar would be very cool

Industrial metal coming before first wave industrial is the listening order
    It goes
NIN -> Ministry -> KMFDM -> godflesh ->skinny puppy -> Coil -> Ramleh -> EZN -> psychic TV -> throbbing gristle -> then if you’re still here for it Japanoise, harsh noise wall, power electronics etc
That’s the proper listening order to get into industrial music, it’s one of the most misunderstood genres out there and you really have to listen to it backwards if you’ve never had any introduction to it
