'Priests of History' arrived yesterday. I am already a few of chapters into it, and I have only put it down to listen to this interview with the author. It's a good book and I recommend it.

'Priest of History". Mmm That is something to grow into as a way of describing what I do as a social worker and writer. Thank you all.

The history of the origins of Christianity is amongst the best evidence against any literal truth to the central myths of the bible.

Modern people are Ken and Barbie. You don't have to be plastic and hollow. If one is called to some form of religion, then good on you ;-)

Obviously once in a while someone non religious will find religion, that would be considered normal. The trend is going in the other direction though so hanging your hat on a few converts may be premature. History does seem to be somewhat cyclical so who knows, in the future that may change. Science is based in logic, religion is based in faith. You can't prove to a believer that God doesn't exist and you can't prove to someone who bases their belief system around logic that God does exist. The debate will rage on forever. There are all kinds of reasons why some people search out faith, too many to mention. If faith gives one peace of mind, that is a good thing. If a faith collectively tries to use the power over it's observers to diminish others then that is not good. It depends on who holds the will of the flock. Humans are flawed, whether they are faith driven or not. So someone as a leader of a religion can sway the flock to break the covenants of their faith and harm others. There are reasons why some think religion is bad for society and other reasons why it is considered beneficial to society. The debate has raged long before we were all born, I suspect it will do so long after we are forgotten.

As an agnostic, I have found that those who enjoy a full happy and loving family life don't feel the need for religion. It is the lonely and rather isolated people who 'need' religion to give them a sense of belonging and perhaps purpose.

there are millions of people who have religion ,who are as empty as can be. why? because religion doesn't save anyone. it is entirely a matter of the soul. only jesus gives the solution in the bible. jesus said you must be born again. this is talking about a spiritual rebirth, where you completely give your self to christ, where the holy spirit lives in you and you obey his words. jesus also said " for what shall it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, yet loses his soul"?

I have a family, I have friends and I came to Christianity about 18 months ago. People I've met at the church have families and social circles outside of the church.
Religion isn't just about belief, belonging and purpose, it's about worship and gratitude to something that is greater than ourselves.

Beware of over generalizations. Every person, every relationship is unique.
