Thank you very much, Tom, whatever you believe about government and the church. But as an American Christian, I believe very strongly in the separation of church and state. Rural communities across this region boast hundreds of churches and variations of denominations; most all created due to members leaving one church angrily because of doctrinal differences to start another down the road. By the way, the way they speak the truth to power further illustrates these enormous doctrinal/interpretational differences. Russia, Iran and Saudi Arabia are good examples of an autocracy and theocracies gone bad.

Appreciate the wisdom of Tom Wright. However, as a minority American who studied with him at St. Andrews, I think his Anglicanism becomes a foreign window into American politics that doesn't quite fit the narrative here. The American Christian narrative is to be weary of the state, and the so-called separation of church and state was intended to protect religion from the tyrannical power of the state. While the Anglican UK tradition is to "accept" and conform to the power of the state as it is married to politics, the American tendency is to curb the political state by limiting its powers. American Christians are leery of political utopian promises that come in Marxist flavors on account of that narrative. Not saying, the narrative is correct, just describing it.

Exactly. Wright expresses the eschatological stance of amillennialism/postmillennialism. It is what justified the bishops' collusion with the Roman Imperium beginning in the fourth century and resulted over the generations in state churches.
In so doing, the official church became a tool of social conformity with the state providing the sword of coercion.
The gospel to some extent lost its inherent countercultural assertion that true justice will arrive only when Christ returns in glory. Whether it be St. Paul or Irenaeus, the older understanding is that maxim that 'power in this age is a corrupting influence' and is impelled by spiritual forces of darkness. Even when reform comes, oppression and expropriation will grow from its seeds.
But, the majority of believers then as now live lives of simple faith, love, and good works to help their neighbors. Regardless of the policies of the official church hierarchies.

For me (American Evangelical) the crisis now is Christian Nationalism, or any nationalism in Christ’s multi-ethnic Church. Indeed, that is why I could never be “Anglican.” The Principalities & Powers are pushing Catholics and Evangelicals to conflate Church & State instead of keeping them separate, for Christ’s Kingdom is not of this world. Our culture wars are rebellion against Jesus’ warning “Do not lord it over others like the Gentiles do.” Authoritarianism coupled with nationalism and pseudo-Christianity is a dangerous combination that cannot “make disciples of every nation.”

I appreciate the heart of what he’s saying, yet that’s not how congregations operate. They don’t seek out experts to guide them. They instead turn to leaders who affirm their cultural/political/& socioeconomic biases, even pushing away experts with legalistic prejudice. The Holy Spirit frequently has to act in spite of the church in the world.

New Covenant Whole Gospel: How many modern Christians cannot honestly answer the questions below?
Who is the King of Israel in John 1:49? Is the King of Israel now the Head of the Church, and are we His Body? Who is the “son” that is the “heir” to the land in Matthew 21:37-43? Why did God allow the Romans to destroy the Old Covenant temple and the Old Covenant city, about 40 years after His Son fulfilled the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34 in blood at Calvary?
What the modern Church needs is a New Covenant Revival (Heb. 9:10) in which members of various denominations are willing to re-examine everything they believe and see if it agrees with the Bible, instead of the traditions of men. We need to be like the Bereans. It will be a battle between our flesh and the Holy Spirit. It will not be easy. If you get mad and upset when someone challenges your man-made Bible doctrines, that is your flesh resisting the truth found in God's Word. Nobody can completely understand the Bible unless they understand the relationship between the Old Covenant given to Moses at Mount Sinai and the New Covenant fulfilled in blood at Calvary.
God is not now a “racist”. He has extended His love to all races of people through the New Covenant fulfilled by His Son’s blood at Calvary. The Apostle Paul warned against using “genealogies” in our faith in 1 Tim. 1:4, and Titus 3:9.
If the New Covenant is "everlasting" in Hebrews 13:20 and the Old Covenant is "obsolete" in Hebrews 8:13, why would any Christian believe God is going back to the Old Covenant system during a future time period?
What brings all local churches together into one Body under the blood of Christ? The answer is found below.
Let us now share the Old Testament Gospel found below with the whole world. On the road to Emmaus He said the Old Testament is about Him.
He is the very Word of God in John 1:1, 14. Awaken Church to this truth.
Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by husband unto them, saith the LORD:
Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Is the most important genealogy in the Bible found in Matthew 1:1 (Gal. 3:16)? Is God's Son the ultimate fulfillment of Israel (John 1:49)? Why has the modern Church done a pitiful job of sharing the Gospel with modern Orthodox Jews? Why would someone tell them they are God's chosen people and then fail to share the Gospel with them? Who is the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 3:15? What did Paul say about Genesis 12:3 in Galatians 3:8, 3:16? Who is the "son" in Psalm 2? Who is the "suffering servant" of Isaiah 53? Who would fulfill the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34? Who would fulfill the timeline of Daniel chapter 9 before the second temple was destroyed? Why have we not heard this simple Old Testament Gospel preached on Christian television in the United States on a regular basis?
Once a person comes to understand the New Covenant promised to Israel and Judah in Jeremiah 31:31-34, which is found fulfilled by Christ during the first century in Hebrews 8:6-13, and Hebrews 10:16-18, and specifically applied to the Church in 2 Corinthians 3:6-8, and Hebrews 12:22-24, man-made Bible doctrines fall apart.
Let us now learn to preach the whole Gospel until He comes back. The King of Israel is risen from the dead! (John 1:49, Acts 2:36)
We are not come to Mount Sinai in Hebrews 12:18. We are come instead to the New Covenant church of Mount Zion and the blood in Hebrews 12:22-24.
1Jn 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
1Jn 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
1Jn 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
The following verses prove the Holy Spirit is the master teacher for those now in the New Covenant.
Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Mar 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

Is the Bible really a reliable test, though?
The New Testament was assembled centuries after the events in Jerusalem, and the people that assembled it had a… relationship with the political power of the Roman Empire that likely affected what was and was not chosen for inclusion.
Be wary of making an idol out of the words, they are often confused for the Word that was with God and the Word that was God.
There’s a historical reason to go back to the text as a way to deconstruct the cultural baggage, but the text itself is not God, especially not a translation of events that took place in a culture we would see as truly foreign.

And people are killing each other, the little ones, and the old victimized by the youthful warring parties. And when there has been so much violence for so long, I can't get my mind around a person whose ancestors or children were slaughtered can sit down in search of compromise and peace. I remember in Revelations it refers to Jesus' return with his feet on Mount of Olives and maybe that's the only way to peaceful dwelling with one another? Politics, regardless of who is right at 83 yrs of age, I enlisted in the US Army and was Honorably discharged in 1968. My deepest concern is contemporary weapons of war. Almost any politician can covertly in private find accomplices to use weapons that the public simply can not comprehend. "Science-fiction" type weapons that have "special access" as in the "Havana Syndrome" or "Remote Viewing." What concern concerns the military use on military targets is generally acceptable, but then "special weapons" are used against the naive public w/no legal oversight or proper approval, then that becomes criminal and possibly treasonous. Horror after murder & injury from stealth attacks on the public by rouge agents gives little comfort from religious platitudes after the fact. Assertive disclosure must happen before tragedy when religious sympathy can be given in a calm discerning environment. I am very serious and feel urgency strongly as after a mass tragedy, there may not be many people to comfort...

An excellent discussion, thank you all. On the issue of Israel and the promised land, I agree fully that we need to realise that God's promises to Israel have expanded out through Jesus' victory. The whole world is God's and the gospel is for all nations. And yet, as Paul also says, God's covenant with the Jews is not forgotten, and Paul hoped and expected their return as Christians.
So, yes, the promised land of Israel is now a global covenant, with the church - God's temple and presence by His Spirit living within us - alive in many nations, and yet concurrently, the land of Israel is still sacred in a hard to define way. It therefore seems to me that Christians should still treasure the covenanted promised land, even as we live in God's kingdom around the world. This would lead then to a political view in which the land should be protected for God's church (and for the Jews yet to be part of that church). We cannot include Muslims, who reject the real Jesus, in equal land division, for they have no part in the old covenant, or Kingdom. Palestinian Christians can certainly inherit the land, as can any and all who follow Christ. The modern church should certainly not get into wrong theology about supporting the Jews to build the third temple or anything like that - for we miraculously are now the temple. Yet we also cannot treat the land like any other bit of territory. It is God's, in a deeply lasting and promised way.

This is what Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem:
    In the last days
the mountain of the Lord’s temple will be established
    as the highest of the mountains;
it will be exalted above the hills,
and all nations will stream to it.
Many peoples will come and say,
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord,
to the temple of the God of Jacob.
He will teach us his ways,
so that we may walk in his paths.”
The law will go out from Zion,
the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
He will judge between the nations
and will settle disputes for many peoples.
They will beat their swords into plowshares
and their spears into pruning hooks.

nor will they train for war anymore.
    Come, descendants of Jacob,
let us walk in the light of the Lord.

The concern here is basically that Trump’s supporters do not care about theology.
Theology is just an excuse to support what they want to do anyway, good old Divine Sanction… marketing.

44:55 Tom Wright has it totally wrong here. American politics has never been secular. God and faith has always played an enormous role in American politics. Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address (one of the most famous speeches in American history) is chock full of references to God. The Pledge of Allegiance says "One Nation Under God". The Declaration of Independence speaks of the Creator. The songs "America the Beautiful" and "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", although they are not legally instituted as national anthems, are (or previously have been) sung in schools and (until recently) were part of the American psyche. Senate sessions are still opened with prayer (this goes all the way back to the Continental Congress).
"Separation of church and state" originally mean that the U.S. would never establish a state church, as Britain did. It did not mean that God would be left out of political discourse.

It means that Government is not to favor one organizational church over another or one Christian theology over another. America is foundation ally Christian Protestant. . God is firmly foundational in America. It is very much part of America from the foundation. I accidentally stumbled onto this video and will make sure not to repeat my mistake. You take absolutely no responsibility to make sure that even so much as the premise you begin with is accurate. So it's all pretty much hogwash i. e. 1st of all in Romans 13:1-7 Paul is writing to Gentile believers in Rome to obey, not Roman secular/pagan authority, but to obey the God-ordained authority of the synagogue rulers in Rome. If God had put all in power who've been in authority then that would mean he put King Saul in authority which the Bible clearly states he did not because he did not want them to have a king but was allowing the people their God given free agency. And those people paid a heavy price for their wickedness.
The United States of America has a constitution that allows for civil disobedience although the law still applies and many have gone to jail in the process for their beliefs. You're a very unwise person. I suggest you actually read the Bible praying to God for understanding and give your heart and willing mind to him because it seems to me you haven't yet taken that very necessary step. If you sincerely want to know the answer to your question, that's how you'll find the wisdom.

When looking at the Bible, we should take a look at all of God's dealings with humanity to gain a more accurate picture of who God is. Look at Jesus - God in the flesh - who was viciously murdered by Jewish leaders and the Romans and yet said "Forgive them; for they know not what they do." He told us to "love our neighbor as yourself" (found in the Old Testament as well in Leviticus 18:19) and divinely inspired Paul to write "[l]ove is patient, love is kind. It does not envy or boast..." Indeed, His act of sacrificial love upon the cross showed humanity what true love is. Would you be willing to admit that this is also part of God as outlined in the Bible?
God is also a God of justice. God waited centuries for the ancient Isrealites to repent from murder, thievery, and gross oppression because He is "slow to anger and of great mercy" (Psalm 145:8-9). When they did not, He sent them into exile and then judged the Babylonians for their cruelty towards Judeans during the sacking of Jerusalem (Jeremiah 50). Should God have sat idly by while bands of rapists prowled the streets of Sodom and Gibeah? Should He have allowed the brutal slavery of the Hebrews in Egypt? Did He not give enough Pharoah enough chance to repent through several plagues or would Pharoah just not listen? When the wicked thrive, humanity accuses God of inaction; however, when God judges the evil and injustice of humanity, we are dissatisfied (even though our self-centeredness is the root of the evil). Is that fair?
To be honest, we should not be too quick to judge God for the deaths of children when we snuff out the life of many a baby through abortion.

I'm glad Wright is s dead-set against the way we see things in America--maybe he'll spend more time on The Continent with his chums and his tea and his bits of this and that; his janglings about 1st century Palenstine; and his notions of all that is "badly incorrect."
I'm from the American South: Dig this: Tom Wright may have a dog that can smell something that no one else's dog can smell. That is a distinct possibility. However, IF Tom Wright does indeed have a dog that can smell something no one else's dog can smell, then, Mister...THAT'S ONE MIGHTY RARE DOG.

Dr. Wright, how sad that you either reject or do not understand Biblical prophecy regarding Israel. I hope your view is not representative of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), because if it is, then I’m leaving! Israel was reconstituted as a nation state as Biblical prophecy foretold, and in your very sight, yet you have the audacity to deny and delegitimize God’s plan and prophesied end. Very, very disappointing!

Why should Christian opinions on political issues be restricted to a clique of "experts", rather than e.g. Christians whose lives are directly affected by policies? By all means encourage temperance, patience, dignity in speech, respect for rulers, etc, but hard NO! to silencing the common Christian. Not many wise, not many noble, A-OK.

At least Trump talks about Jesus and desires for America to have freedom of religion! Opposite of Democrat leadership.

Taking the name in vain isn’t a good thing.
Freedom of religion means the government isn’t shoving it down your throat in public schools.
As a descendant of Friends and Catholics on one side and Puritans on the other, the state endorsing one religion always means persecution of all other religious groups.
The guy who promised a “Muslim Ban” isn’t for freedom of religion.

@@Justanotherconsumer You're right about using God's name in vain. He certainly isn't the best model as a Christian in that regard. However, he protects the rights for religion for all people without shame. He is not afraid to say the Name of "Jesus" even when used in a good way. His intention is good but sometimes his mouth messes up for sure. Lol. Take Peter in the Gospels for our screw up example of a follower of Jesus. In fact, all the disciples eventually deserted Jesus. Yet Jesus came back for them and renewed their faith in him. Like doubting Thomas that said , "my Lord and my God".
I think it is a safe and proper to say Trump is a growing carnal Christian. However, there is no way I can say that he does not LOVE America. He wants us all to prosper and desires to keep us safe. At this time, He is the best option for America.

You are wrong about Democrats. They are for individuals making their own choices, not having someone else's vision of faith imposed on the rest of us by religeous hucksters.

Jesus triumphed over Roman politics by willingness to do "whatever it takes" to become named King of the Jews in a Roman court of Law, because Law matters. This seems to be why so many Jews in the 1st century believed Jesus would politically and militarily overthrow Rome. See "Jesus' Biological Father was Joseph: According to the New Testament" by DS WAGGONER. In the end, we see that, thanks to Jesus' willingness to do whatever it takes to be named "King" in a Roman court of law, is how eventually the entire Roman political landscape, and the entire Roman military fell to their knees in his honor. Servanthood wins the victory.

Your theory that prolife individuals are somehow inspired by the Greek god of violence and his interaction with the goddess of love is probably the most bizarre take I’ve ever heard. Tom thinks that Trump is Cesare. Tom the Woke Industrial Complex is Cesare!!
