Sarah Irving-Stonebraker: Learning our history can answer our meaning crisis
Sarah Irving-Stonebraker is an Australian historian whose new book ‘Priests of History: stewarding the past in an ahistoric age’ says that, in our age of self-invention, modern people are profoundly disconnected from the stories, practises and history that once gave them their identity.
Justin and Belle talk to Sarah about re-enchanting an ahistorical age and about her own journey from atheism to Christianity as a young academic at Cambridge and Oxford in the early 2000s.

Obviously once in a while someone non religious will find religion, that would be considered normal. The trend is going in the other direction though so hanging your hat on a few converts may be premature. History does seem to be somewhat cyclical so who knows, in the future that may change. Science is based in logic, religion is based in faith. You can't prove to a believer that God doesn't exist and you can't prove to someone who bases their belief system around logic that God does exist. The debate will rage on forever. There are all kinds of reasons why some people search out faith, too many to mention. If faith gives one peace of mind, that is a good thing. If a faith collectively tries to use the power over it's observers to diminish others then that is not good. It depends on who holds the will of the flock. Humans are flawed, whether they are faith driven or not. So someone as a leader of a religion can sway the flock to break the covenants of their faith and harm others. There are reasons why some think religion is bad for society and other reasons why it is considered beneficial to society. The debate has raged long before we were all born, I suspect it will do so long after we are forgotten.
Modern people are Ken and Barbie. You don't have to be plastic and hollow. If one is called to some form of religion, then good on you ;-)
I could easily move the universe a great distance away. In fact, I'll do it now...and you won't feel a thing....done ! (Matthew 17:20)

Art is reflection of the Soul
But alex you are Yaldabaogh. Why haven't you figured it out yet. I watch you for the day you. Finally realise who you are
'Priest of History". Mmm That is something to grow into as a way of describing what I do as a social worker and writer. Thank you all.
As an agnostic, I have found that those who enjoy a full happy and loving family life don't feel the need for religion. It is the lonely and rather isolated people who 'need' religion to give them a sense of belonging and perhaps purpose.
there are millions of people who have religion ,who are as empty as can be. why? because religion doesn't save anyone. it is entirely a matter of the soul. only jesus gives the solution in the bible. jesus said you must be born again. this is talking about a spiritual rebirth, where you completely give your self to christ, where the holy spirit lives in you and you obey his words. jesus also said " for what shall it profit a man, if he gains the whole world, yet loses his soul"?
Arrogant assumption.
I have a family, I have friends and I came to Christianity about 18 months ago. People I've met at the church have families and social circles outside of the church. Religion isn't just about belief, belonging and purpose, it's about worship and gratitude to something that is greater than ourselves.
Beware of over generalizations. Every person, every relationship is unique.
This is suchhhh a good episode 🙏
When did NT Wright and Mr Trump have a personal conversation about any topic?
What I don't accept about Petersen is Why is he hung up ONLY on the morality of Christianity? Frankly, Christian moral philosophy is pretty defective. There is more and better thought among the REAL moral philosophers of the ancient world such as Plato, Aristotle, Marcus Aurelius, and Plotinus than there is in Christianity. Why link back to some suicidal Jewish god man when the great moral philosophers who really created our modern moral system weren't even Christians?
"How do you talk people out of -a conspiracy theory- using their eyes, ears and brains?" One day you too will find out that labeling reality a "conspiracy theory" does not magically make it go away. Go ahead curse the "fear" and the "conspiracy theories" all you want, it won't stop those fearful conspiracy theorists from noticing their children being murdered on a regular basis by your poor misunderstood refugees
'Priests of History' arrived yesterday. I am already a few of chapters into it, and I have only put it down to listen to this interview with the author. It's a good book and I recommend it.
She badly needs a toothbrush
She is just jelows of men achievments.
Such insightful discussion. Will be getting the book. Awed by Mr Wright's expansive and deep knowledge of the Bible. Very enlightened after hearing his invaluable insights that are so relevant today. 🙏
Hey AI, she just challenged to not take over the world... Wanna meet up and scheme over web diagrams?
"The rulers of the earth plan, and scheme, and make laws, and change laws, and war, and pull down one, and raise up another. But they little think that they rule only by the will of Jesus, and that nothing happens without the permission of the Lamb of God." --J. C. Ryle Donald Trump is not a Christian. The "prosperity gospel" is no gospel. "President Donald Trump has been surrounded by absolutely horrible 'spiritual advisors' since he first ran for President, Paula White was the chairman (chairwoman?) of his Presidential Spiritual Advisory Board. He was surrounded by Word-Faith heretics and charlatans, and some prominent SBC pastores (Robert Jeffress and Jack Graham) who endorsed them despite knowing better" -- Justin Peters
Alex & Jimmy Carr in conversation would make this young man very happy!
Making the world atheists would NO DOUBT be a good thing. The distinction is how you do it. Religions are sets of ideas, atheism is the better idea. Spread better ideas.
How very honest he is. Let’s continue to pray for Alex.
Thank you 🙏
In the OT, all humans deserved the wrath of God, it all began in the garden and the plan for rescue was put into motion, specifically the plan for "her seed shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel." God called out a nation because this Seed was to be delivered on to the Earth and until that happened, all of humanity was dangling on the "Mercy" of God and this is why some of the brutal judgements were passed in the OT as none deserved to live. And if God hadn't called out a nation separated out to Himself for this particular plan to bring the Seed on Earth, then corruption would have taken over the entire world (like it almost did at the time of Noah), resulting in not a single virgin left for the saviour to be delivered. But as soon as the Seed (Jesus) was delivered, the "Mercy" part was switched to "Grace" because.
The prof is very dodgy and undermines the sovereignty of God time and again. I have been watching him and at times want to be politically correct. In one one of the steams with TBN he banned the word eternity. This is man is very unreliable.
The idea that Christians wete continually persecuted in the Roman empire is factually incorrect.
That's very interesting. What a respectable guy
When Alex bring’s up the Pavlov’s dog example it sounds like he’s just invoking teleology without wanting to admit it. That there is a “logical” and “ordered” way to direct certain acts and emotions.
Would you be willing to be crucified for atheism?
Dr Martin Shaw is an answered prayer. His conversion is necessary for what’s coming. He’s helping me greatly. God bless him.
It took an hour to get to the point of this video. This woman doesn't have a functioning brain. Her ending flurry saying the word god as many times possible rooted her out as an insane lunatic. She has lost all her gray matter. When she says god is in charge, have her first speak to what epistemologically sound and falsifiable testing supports her statement. She has spent her lifetime in the sciences. Have her put what she says to any established test of knowing. If this woman ever had a functioning brain cell, it is long gone. Her test of reality rests upon if it makes sense to her. If it makes sense to her then not only is it real, not only does it exist, not only is it true, but it's universally true. All the opposite of what science is based on. So now, anything and everything that makes sense to anyone is true and real and exists. Unicorns are going to be so happy to hear this. This woman is mentally gone.
Money! A lot of money from the right wing think tanks or the zionists. Money at least as much as Jordan Peterson receives. Money money money!
"let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven" Who are the others? Pas ho = Everyone
She’s a journalist hack
I was an atheist, and it all changed when I decided to believe that every word of the Holy Bible is true, and that is all really happened. That was the leap of faith that opened the door to all Truth, knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. Every fiber of my being resisted believing it, and I was dragged - kicking and screaming - by the hand of God out of the darkness and into the Light.
I need to find Alex in the street and tell him that he's the reason that I'm a theist.
I’ll wait for the video detailing what Biden and Harris get wrong about Christianity.
My favourite Superheroes are Spider-Man and Batman, I am an artist who is still trying to find what job I should take where my skills will be at best use, unfortunately I enjoy 'strange' subjects like werewolves, skeletons, blobs and Frankensteins and I feel at conflict feeling that I as a Christian shouldn't like stuff such as that and should just paint mountains and flowers and strait-forward good things. also, Woo-Hoo Doctor Who references in this video!!!
Nice to read you’re an artist and a Christian. I don’t see a conflict there necessarily myself. A lot of old churches have gargoyles (monsters) on the outside too. ‘Strange’ things are part of life, a reality which God created. I suppose we have to work out where they fit in. Best wishes!
This was awesome, I love how he articulates the language of modern stories of comics and fairytales with the Bible clearly. Buying both his books lol
τολμάς άθεε να συζητήσεις με τον Άντριου Γουίλσον η τον Χριστιανό Πρίγκιπα? υποθέτω ότι φοβάσαι εξαιτίας τής νοητικής σου ανεπάρκειας..!!!
What a waste of time. Christians just wearing their badge of confusion. Nothing new? Science rules.
Dr. Wright, how sad that you either reject or do not understand Biblical prophecy regarding Israel. I hope your view is not representative of the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), because if it is, then I’m leaving! Israel was reconstituted as a nation state as Biblical prophecy foretold, and in your very sight, yet you have the audacity to deny and delegitimize God’s plan and prophesied end. Very, very disappointing!
There is no white evangelical movement in the US. That sounds a bit racist Tom. Are you joining the left's propaganda that America is systemically racist?
Thanks for the interview on Tom and Mike's new book. I'd enjoy getting a copy of it!
Such a powerful story 😭 God is faithful and kind, and stays close in the darkest seasons of life.
Jesus’s government is the Sermon on the Mount ✝️
Excellent series of videos. Thoughtful and deep, insightful and informative. Great presenters/hosts. And thanks to the lady grieving. May she have peace on her journey ❤
Jesus triumphed over Roman politics by willingness to do "whatever it takes" to become named King of the Jews in a Roman court of Law, because Law matters. This seems to be why so many Jews in the 1st century believed Jesus would politically and militarily overthrow Rome. See "Jesus' Biological Father was Joseph: According to the New Testament" by DS WAGGONER. In the end, we see that, thanks to Jesus' willingness to do whatever it takes to be named "King" in a Roman court of law, is how eventually the entire Roman political landscape, and the entire Roman military fell to their knees in his honor. Servanthood wins the victory.
No comments, really?
Can't he see his misunderstandings of Christianity!? I have a lot of respect for Mr O'Connor, but you should have pointed out the full implications of what he says. He's correct that we all have intuitions - but never was it discussed where those came from. The bible says God wrote the law in our hearts. There's a perfectly reasonable answer. And it's further backed by C S Lewis' argument that where there is a hunger for something it stands most logical that that something exists. As for beauty drawing one closer to God and evil moving people away. It's a false dichotomy. Good and evil. Beautiful and ugly. Two separate categories. Furthermore, most people become Christians through an acknowledgement of sin and evil. Not of the beautiful. It's when we realise that this world is imperfect that we realise there must be a solution and then it becomes all to clear.
Jesus seems to be mysteriously absent lately.
