  • HELLO!
In this video I show you how I modify my floppy hat to become flat. I just go this floppy hat at the thrift store and I wanted to see if I could DIY the brim to be stiffer. It turned out to be very successful and I wanted to share the process with you! It was really fun to make this video and I hope you all enjoy!

This technique definitely works. I tried it on a tan felt hat and a black one and the only thing I would warn is for the tan hat the glue left residue where I put it.

Water based glue.... if it gets wet your hair is going to get stiff to😯 it’s happened to me several times. Actually I’m looking at stiffening my new hat and avoiding the stiff hair thing. Unmanageable “hat hair” is something I don’t like dealing with.

Hairspray works as well for the same job, and hairspray smells better than glue (or Kahl Hat Stiffener, or shellac in 95%+ alcohol, even fabric starch, or sizing etc. I think your glue would have worked better in alcohol btw, it would dry faster) . Also, you can hold a felt hat over a tea kettle (steam it) and reshape it as you wish. If you've previously stiffened the felt using your preferred method, the steam will reactive the stiffener, and the hat will retain the shape you've molded. EVERY felt cowboy hat, fedora, trilby, pork pie, panama, etc, has been stiffened and shaped thusly for centuries. * end/ man-splaining. sorry 😒 * 🤪

I purchased a beaded hat and brim is floppy. I have several questions
    1. Will the mod podge run or clump up if it gets rained on?
    2. Did the container stick to your hat?
I feel I will need to have weight all around the hat
    3. Will that mod podge ruin the beads? I can attach a picture if needed

    • @millineryhub
      @millineryhub 3 роки тому

If it gets wet the glue will most likely turn white. One of the reasons milliners rarely use it. It shouldn't run. But it will go out of shape again. You could Iron it back in place. You could wait until the brim is dry and then iron it down (with a cloth) to make sure it's flat. I'd think the likelihood of ruining the look of your beads is high.

So I know this video is old and this comment is late, but for future reference or anyone watching this after me, I'm sure this works, but I don't know that this is the best thing to do to a felt hat. It could discolor or flake off, and there are just better options.
Theres a company called bickmore that sells all kinds of specified products like hat cleaner, hat stiffener, waterproofer, hat sponges, and stuff like that. These products will be designed with a purpose in mind, and because of that, they wont discolor, flake off, or harm your hats in any way. There are also other companies like scout for example.
Just might be a bit better for your hats in the long run as opposed to glue.

    Your information is good,
FYI: It is beyond me why UA-cam content creators play background music over their voice. We came to hear you, not to fight background noise. The background noise quickly becomes extremely annoying. Many folks have hearing difficulties, thus while concentrating on your voice they must also concentrate on tuning out the music; frustrating. Your background music ruins an otherwise exceptionally good presentation.

    Ashley,
    1. you assume a lot about hats
    2. Was it wool felt or fur felt?
    3. What kind of glue was it in case I don’t have access to modge podge?
    4. Only now in front of the camera you decide not to use not use your “nice kitchen equipment”? A bit of planning ahead of filming wouldn’t hurt. Same goes about paper bags.
    5. Not all kids eat glue. Maybe because you did, your videos work out that way.
