I love my T480, easily the best laptop I've ever owned, would highly recommend it for the "broke college student" crowd or anyone on a tighter budget. My second hand model came with a dodgy trackpad, and it was as simple as taking off the back cover, taking out the internal battery, and undoing 4 screws to get the old trackpad out!
@@ghostbrandishjm5853 I have an i5 model without dedicated graphics, so I can only speak for that but I think this would mostly apply to those models too. It's still good for those that don't need more than 4 cores. You have your RAM upgrades, you have your fantastic relaibility, and I have upgraded my T480 to an IGZO low-power screen (it's great), 32GB RAM, and 48Wh and 72Wh batteries. There's a limit to the CPU power, sure, but what are you going to do on such a laptop? Play games? They're a giant waste of time and money. And it will handle video editing fine because it has Intel QSV.
I've bought one back in december 2022, it's been 10 months now and I still think I made a great buy. It's not as upgradable as the often called "true ThinkPads", but it's enough for me. I've put 32GB of memory to it, replaced the WWAN card with another M.2 SSD (making it 512GB + 256GB), changed the keyboard for a backlit one, and it's perfect for me as is. I use it mainly for study and work (managing a store). It's got Windows 11 compatibility (although I use Solus) and no problem in running my day-to-day apps.

I found one new in box at my local microcenter, fully loaded, for $250. I had heard how legendary it was so I impulse bought it and do not regret it. I like using it so much I barely touch my desktop now.
@@MeulkieHi! How do you like it so far? What specs does yours have? Found one used myself for around the same price, i7, MX150, all nice things, thinking to buy it.
Great machines, as long as you get one with the updated firmware for the thunderbolt controller. I bought mine i7 16gb of ram no drive and cracked screen for $40
I've been waffling between the T480 and the X280 for a few days now. The prices are right, and I can't believe how mint your T480 was! I hope mine is in as good a condition. Great video!
Thanks. ideally you pretty much should get a very good T480 in excellent condition. most have been rolled out from big companies. only make sure the seller is in good standing
i bought a thinkpad t480 back in 2020 for online school since my hp laptop stopped working and i needed a laptop RIGHT THEN. the parts of the thinkpad t480 that intrigued me were the external and internal battery combo, the replaceable keyboard (and the fact that thinkpad keyboards are amazing), the 2 sticks of user replacable ram, all the i/o, and the fact that thinkpads had a huge reputation for being durable (they were the only laptops allowed on the international space station for a long time), i was just set on the laptop. in the ~4 years that i've had this laptop i have abused it so much, i have done many things to this laptop that should have killed it but its still here and even though because of my own negligence it's held together with duct tape i think it's going to last at least another 5 years
As an aspiring programmer this is great! Lenovo laptops work flawlessly with Linux. I got a L460 which is worse but its battery life and keyboard are a dream, definitely recommended.
I bought a T480 last week, and so far I am loving it. I was able to get it in practically brand new condition for $250. It packs a i5 8350, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, 14" 1080p IPS display. I fully intend to upgrade the RAM and SSD in the future. I loaded Ubuntu onto it and have been using it primarily for coding, web browsing, and watching UA-cam. For the price, it might be the best or at the least one of the best laptops you can buy for under $300.
thinkpads never really drop to super low prices until they are literally dead specs wise, online sellers discovered long ago how valuable they were and how in demand they are which stops you getting seriously great deals these days but still sone decent options around
Just got one with i5 1tb ssd, 16gb ram for $220 shipped. It will replace my t450 that I also bought for around $200 ages ago. I’ve been telling people for ages, you don’t need expensive Mac books. These are more than sufficient for my e-commerce business. I have another dedicated gaming laptop for gaming.
@@MrJspecefini wow! thats a great buy. I pretty much take mine wherever i go, and its still bery much rock solid, the battery life for me is the sweetest part 😉
i have it for almost 2 years still kicking ass. One time i was late for work i packed all of my things in a rush the laptop slipped out of my bag fall into the floor and no damage on it, the floor cracked....
Great video! The T480 is an awesome laptop! I love Lenovo's build quality on these Thinkpads. I got mine for about $190 and then added a 1TB secondary NVMe SSD and upgraded to 64GB. Lastly, I replaced my batteries and upgraded the external battery to the extended capacity size. I can easily run the laptop all day on a single charge. The upgrades are well worth the investment.
@@mirzanazri About $90 for both batteries (roughly $45 each). For the SSD, it's about $80 now. The 64GB RAM upgrade was about $125. All in total, about $295, but each are optional and can be done incrementally.
@@jordanwilliams1546 I mostly upgraded because I could. It depends on your workload and whether you need the full 64GB of RAM. If you're doing light work and web browsing, 16GB is a good amount. If you're doing software development, you might want more. I've not come close to maxing out the 64GB, but I could imagine a scenario where you might have something like OBS open and multiple browser windows/tabs and some development tools and that taking a considerable chunk of memory.
@@Hardwaremoneykind of scared because got a T470 for $139 used very good condition on Amazon. I just hope it can last 3 years but that might be a bit optimistic
It's a shame company's don't make sturdier, harder laptops anymore and instead go for the slender feel. Hp used to have great lapyopsy before, nowadays it feels like it's one 1hp. I wish they would take a step back and make laptops like the used to, it might boost their sales a lot.

i have this baby for the uni, and i like it overall. I had two problems: Lagging touch screen which was randomly clicking(i simply disabled it), and the brightness of the screen is not enough in a sunny room. Great video, man! I just bought one on eBay myself relatively cheap and excellent condition under $150. Only thing is that it’s 8GB RAM instead of 16GB but I may not need the full 16 at this time and can upgrade later if necessary. Keep going, you deserve more subscribers for the great attention to detail and editing!
@@ehabemshani222 I think it’s very well worth it, especially if you can get one that has both the internal and external batteries. If you get a large power bank capable of USB-C PD 45-100 Watts, then it will definitely last a long time, 1-2 days or more. If you use Linux with the TLP power management, then it will actually be amazing battery life compared to Windows. You can try dual booting both. How good it is, depends on what you wish to use it for. For everyday use, coding, editing video, and other work/productivity usage, it’s great! For gaming, I tried some light things like Dead Cells and it works great, but some more demanding games might not work so well unless you get a model with the dGPU. But I am also using Shadow PC (cloud PC) and sometimes NVIDIA GeForce NOW cloud gaming and they work great on it. And this is one of the last few great Thinkpads that is easily upgradable yourself, for example no soldered RAM modules so you can upgrade it to 32 or 64 GB RAM in the future and it will stay a beast for a long time. I really love it. Around 6 years ago it costed 1k to $2K USD, so it’s amazing that you can get them for a good price now. If you can get the matte 1080p display version with backlit keyboard, it’s definitely nice. If not, you can always upgrade that yourself in the future.

I've just reached the point of "too many things going wrong with it" on my 2011 Macbook Pro, and I kind of want a bigger screen. Thought about going to a similar-vintage 15" MBP, but just didn't find anything at a price competitive to comparably equipped Thinkpads. I've always loved Thinkpads for their durability and their matchless keyboards. So it's back to the black slab for me. :) Just plunked down the cash for a T590, which should show up Monday. Spent a hair over $500US and got an I7, 16GB RAM, 15" display, gobs of USB ports, an ethernet jack, and a 2TB SSD to swap in for the 512 that came with it. The 512 can go into my chromebook. :D
@@Hardwaremoney Yeah, that was a deal I just couldn't walk past. My musical aspirations are gonna be much happier with a laptop with more that one more-or-less working USB port. :D
mind I ask what processor is it that came with it? 500 dollars seems kinda overpay, will anyone use that much storage anyways? I only see that kinda storage reasonable on gaming laptops and pcs.
@@memesandstuff491 It's an i7-8665U. 1.9-4.8GHz, 4 cores, hyperthreaded. 's plenty fast enough for my music production purposes. As for the 2TB, I mirror my home workstation, with my massive accumulations of every photo I've ever taken since 2004 (or earlier, counting all the ones I've scanned :) ) , all the music I own, and a lot of accumulated videos. I can burn thru disk space in a ferocious hurry if I don't keep cleaning up after myself. For the traditional Thinkpad virtues (durability, great keyboard, gorgeous display) with a larger display, longer battery life, and lighter weight than the Macbook Pro it replaced, I think $500's reasonable. That was 4-1/4 for the machine, and about another 80 for the 2TB drive. And recall, it's a T590, which is newer and has a larger screen than the T480 in the vid.
Thank you for the recommendation I will purchase this device in 2024 for my studies. I’m using 2018 i7 15in Mbp and custom ryzen gaming pc built in late 2019 but this one I will use to learn financial modeling in excel
Thinkpads have been a treat to experience. Their robust body might not be the most stylish but it sure feels solid and rugged and powerful in your hands. The display, speakers and sheer performance to gulp down multiple tasks is a beauty to behold. The red nipple in the center (yes its called that) and the red glowing dot on the lid is such a style icon!
good option for warranty and general security while buying used laptops are websites that sell refurbished items. I just bought a lenovo T470s for around 300€ with i7-7600 and 20 gig ram with 30 days to give it back and 12 month warranty in case of technical problems , so would racomend checking these sites as they all offer pretty similar deals .
Supposedly you can also upgrade the stock TN display panel it comes with it to an IPS one that supports full HD resolution. There are guides for this process on youtube. And the best thing about upgrading the display panel isnt because of better colours and viewing angles. But because the replacement part is damn cheap at £30-40. My father wanted to spend £250 on a chrome book. I said to give me that £250 and I will give you something 100x better!
I got an IGZO low-power panel for it for just $60 including shipping. I got it from a local e-tailer. It had no mounting brackets so I used double-sided tape to secure it in place, and it's not going anywhere. Fun fact - most modern ThinkPads have their screens secured with double-sided tape because it's more practical and easier to manage, and also easier to upgrade the screen afterwards.
Bought one several years ago for 450 Euros used, dropped in a 1080p screen (under 100 Euros), Linux Mint, absolute heaven. Will use it until it falls apart.
Thinkpads are best with Linux. I bought old X1 Carbon 7gen (2019) and it's awesome - you need to set Linux sleep in BIOS & install GPU drivers so it work properly .. and then .. perfection!
Been keeping an eye on getting a T480. Currently using a x270, but unfortunately it is too heavy at times. Very good machines I highly recommend a x270 as well, but might be too small for some people.
I considered the T480 too.. Went with a Latitude 7490/7400 instead. The Lenovo is build sturdier for sure and has more "upgrades" available too. But as a overal home laptop (paperwork, youtube, mailing, simple games) it's perfect to me. The spec is similar to a 480 (when you leave out the 1440P upgrade route) apart from the external battery. Overal I think it is a great alternative, easy acces to parts. DC-Jack is a plug-and-play replacement and it has TB3 with charging too. The 480 only has the latter, so if that breaks you are screwed... The battery is larger on the 480 but I rather have a lightweight machine and a 20k mAh batterypack in with me for times I need to.
For 100 dollars more I got myself a MacBook 2018 pro with an i7 9750h processor, I dislike Mac but after my incident with the xps 9350 having a loud buzzin noise out of nowhere I had to get something more sturdier. The Battery kina sucks thought, but I got it in mint condition so I can't complain alot. Either way, from what I can tell the latitud is pretty much a downgrade vs the t480 by looking at its processor, dunno why you would go for it when I happened to rum the same horsepower before and it couldnt even movies at 4k/2k.
I bought my T480s in 2023 for $230. It is with core i5 and 8gb. I add 16gb more and now there is 24gb. I’m absolutely happy with this laptop. My previous laptop was T440s. And this is the right upgrade. Honestly T440s was even better but too heavy and pretty old and slow.
in the line of T series thinkpad, T480 might be the last best T series. ive got mine two years ago, and ive been try to max the specs, and the result is beyond amazing. mine its the i7 version, within Nvidia in it. i chunk 2X32GB RAM, for total 64GB RAM, and put 4TB NVME SSD from PNY, alongside with 4G Fibocom WWAN LTE for my mobile network ( never use public wifi btw ) with Windows 11 PRO and linux mint, this device is SOLID ROCK.
bought for 200€ a thinkpad, the merchant put in 16gig of ram and a the big slot battery to compensate the non cleanliness of it (by commercial standards, but for me it was really clean), put arch with i3 on it and it just works perfectly. solid manufacturing, lot of ports, and two batteries, one internal and one changeable, game changer, sad this kind of design is less and less sold with the new ones.
Nice. T480 X280 L380 ... and Intel gen 8 is the oldest processor with high enough performing for todays daily requirements. Unlike gen 7 and below (or so i heard from chatgpt), gen 8 is eligible to upgrade to win11, has enough cores to do most multitask you need like ms office, canva, zoom meeting, basic AI, browsing, music, watch video, handling SQL and billing etc. For me this spec works. 2x8gb ram would suffice. 2x16gb even better, tho rarely needed
this is exactly my work laptop, mac cant do many server related jobs cause it cant be upgraded or qweaked. d lenovo fit all use and demand, i upgraded it storage myself with no issue.
Perfect video. Keep the screws in a cup maybe but can I ask as there was only 8gb ram and you said you can upgrade to 64gb which is huge does it have 4 slots of 16gb potential or 2 slots for 32Gb. Thank you. Nice to give an older unit a little lift. Thank you for a very informative video

Yes, 100% you will be investing in a good laptop. i own the T480 myself, and i have only good things to say about it. only make sure you are buying from a reputable seller. In my new video i taked more about the t480, you can watch the video as well 😉
Should I get a T480 used second-hand with 24GB ram and 1TB for 500$ or get a new IdeaPad for 700$ with i5-1135g7 16GB ram and 1TB SSD ? Primarily software dev and casuallll gaming (maybe)... I need a good typing experience, prefer silent keyboard if possible.
That's too expensive for a T480. Find one that costs $200-250 and has either 8GB RAM or no RAM at all. And buy two 16GB RAM sticks (you only need them to be 2400MHz, no need to overpay for 3200MHz) and a good SSD. Then you'll get your money's worth. You can also find 72Wh batteries for it for like $40. IdeaPads are cheap, less reliable and have worse build quality and keyboard. You also can't really use them in the cold, with gloves on (you can use your T480 literally anywhere, even in the cold in winter). The T480 is sturdy and will probably also survive being dropped, but I wouldn't recommend you try it at home.
Liquidated companies oem thinkpad are the best on the market . You may get a one year old X1 carbon gen 10 thinkpad for just a penny , i got mine for £10 with 2 years warranty left in it . After some search i finally decided to format the all drive and followed lenovo online thinkpad recovery process to restore my thinkpad to a brand new win pro system with all drivers installed during the process for free !!!. Now when people are talking about buying used laptops i just think oem laptops is the way to go.
I got one for 180 EUR with like 80 cycles on batteries and i5 8250u, 8GB, 256 nvme (7 months ago). I sold some of the parts for like 40 EUR. Now I have it with Chicony Keyboard backlit, 1080p, 400nits display, 16GB RAM, and a new palmrest. I am Running solo Debian 12 Stable. Using it for research, taking care of my stuff, multimedia. The display is gorgeous and the small batteries hold like 5 Hours of usage. Windows 11 was working nice but I decided to not dual boot anymore. Is not that strong but on KDE Debian works very nice for normal stuff. I wanted it just for portably at a final price of 300 EUR after upgrades. For heavy stuff I use my desktop. The thing is with these upgrades I am getting a better experience even. Than of 700 EUR usage because display is the most important for me when maintenaing UA-cam Channels or Web Design.

The only thing I don't like about the T470, T480, T490 S series is the fact that the heat sink vent is on the right side (as far as I know). This is bad for right handed people because it always blows hot air to your hand when using an external mouse. I also hate that battery is not swappable anymore like previous models. To me the T440s/T450s are just better besides Win 11 hardware requirement of course.

There is also A485 which is t480 but with amd cpus, and very good integrated graphics. Its cheaper and has no thunderbolt(avoiding the firmware bug that burned the tb ports on some intel based thinkpads). It has same exact parts otherwise, you can get bigger batteries(48 and 72whrs compared to stock slim 24whr battery), plus internal one and get gigantic amounts of battery life in excess of 15 hours depending on use. It also means it could take 4-5 hours of harduse/gaming.
The a485 unfortuaely eats battery like crazy , we haveba couple of t480 and t480s compared to 2 a485 unit , the 75wh + internal barely beats the 24+24wh battery t480s and loses to the 57wh t480s

T480s is a bad idea because of no external batteries. Buy only the T480, it's more upgradable and there are more mods for it. And you don't need to overspend on the i7-8650U because there's little performance improvement, since both i5-8350U and i7-8650U are 4-core CPUs. Get an Intel i5-8350U model for cheap with a 16GB RAM stick (there should be 1x16GB instead of 2x8GB sticks installed for easier upgradability later down the road) and improve the efficiency of the processor to be on par with the i7-8550U by undervolting the CPU using Throttlestop.
@@one_step_sideways Thanks for leaving these tips here I don't know about undervolting a CPU. Are you sure that this won't cause any issues down the road? I may purchase this laptop soon and I want it to be as stable as possible because it is meant for university.
@@mianashhad9802 I'm certain. It's only going to actually prolong its lifespan. The only issues you may have is if you undervolt it too hard. It's just a matter of raising the voltage up to the last successful step. For instance, I decreased voltage in -25mV ranges starting from -50mV. At -125mV it froze during the stress test to test the stability, so I increased it to -100mV and it was stable again.

Thanks. ideally you pretty much should get a very good T480 in excellent condition. most have been rolled out from big companies. only make sure the seller is in good standing
i bought a thinkpad t480 back in 2020 for online school since my hp laptop stopped working and i needed a laptop RIGHT THEN. the parts of the thinkpad t480 that intrigued me were the external and internal battery combo, the replaceable keyboard (and the fact that thinkpad keyboards are amazing), the 2 sticks of user replacable ram, all the i/o, and the fact that thinkpads had a huge reputation for being durable (they were the only laptops allowed on the international space station for a long time), i was just set on the laptop. in the ~4 years that i've had this laptop i have abused it so much, i have done many things to this laptop that should have killed it but its still here and even though because of my own negligence it's held together with duct tape i think it's going to last at least another 5 years
wow! thanks for the feedback, it will definitely help someone to make a buying decision 😉

Couldn't agree more! and $190 is a pretty good deal. I am aware the good conditioned T480`s are getting quite hard to get lately
@@mirzanazri About $90 for both batteries (roughly $45 each). For the SSD, it's about $80 now. The 64GB RAM upgrade was about $125. All in total, about $295, but each are optional and can be done incrementally.
@@tinkersmusingsI have the T480 with 16gb ram. Do you notice a huge difference upgrading to 64gb of ram?
@@jordanwilliams1546 I mostly upgraded because I could. It depends on your workload and whether you need the full 64GB of RAM. If you're doing light work and web browsing, 16GB is a good amount. If you're doing software development, you might want more. I've not come close to maxing out the 64GB, but I could imagine a scenario where you might have something like OBS open and multiple browser windows/tabs and some development tools and that taking a considerable chunk of memory.

I had one from work then a P1, all of the lenovo thinkpads are solid machines and can’t go wrong
i think so too 😉
I considered the T480 too..
My next purchase, thank you for this review !

Nice. T480 X280 L380 ... and Intel gen 8 is the oldest processor with high enough performing for todays daily requirements.

I've a Thinkpad with Core i7, 32 GB RAM, 256 SSD, touch-screen, two batteries, retro iluminated keyboard... it's good enough to replace my old T430
definitely 😉
Great review! Excellent work.
Thanks for the feedback 😉
WELL DONE VIDEO SIR!
😉 you are welcome
How does it compare the upgraded ram and ssd with the stock one?
will need to check that😉 but i can imagine the machine will be much faster when upgraded. depending on so many factors though
I just purchased mine online. I asked for the BIOS of this, and they sent me a pic showing that the RAM is 16 GB but in their post, it's just 8 GB. Is there a chance that the BIOS they've sent me is FAKE?
It might not be fake. this dellers sell a ton lot of the same laptop. perhaps the pictures they sent you was that of one of the many stocks they have
The only thing I don't like about the T470, T480, T490 S series is the fact that the heat sink vent is on the right side (as far as I know). This is bad for right handed people because it always blows hot air to your hand when using an external mouse. I also hate that battery is not swappable anymore like previous models. To me the T440s/T450s are just better besides Win 11 hardware requirement of course.
i get what you mean, i use a wireless mouse and its absolutely not a problem 😉
@@Hardwaremoney Okay. Thanks for quick response. It appears only the S models have that design. The non S has the vent on the left. Looking to get one right now. Great machines.
great choice😉@@muhammad-bin-american
The battery is replaceable tho
Imma be getting a thinkpad A485 since ill use the vega 8 graphics, but if you dont want graphics buy the T480
I have one and love it...just bought a 2TB SSD just to be surprised mine has a M.2...
Does anyone knows which conector I have to buy in order to use the SSD I just bought?
the opening of the back case was akin to a cat fighting a can of tuna
😀😂
There is also A485 which is t480 but with amd cpus, and very good integrated graphics. Its cheaper and has no thunderbolt(avoiding the firmware bug that burned the tb ports on some intel based thinkpads).
It has same exact parts otherwise, you can get bigger batteries(48 and 72whrs compared to stock slim 24whr battery), plus internal one and get gigantic amounts of battery life in excess of 15 hours depending on use. It also means it could take 4-5 hours of harduse/gaming.
Great info, pretty sure someone will find this useful 😉
The a485 unfortuaely eats battery like crazy , we haveba couple of t480 and t480s compared to 2 a485 unit , the 75wh + internal barely beats the 24+24wh battery t480s and loses to the 57wh t480s
My main laptop keeps crashing for no reasons, the screen just turns off and the power button light keeps coming on...have taken in it to a repair shop but its always the same thing sooo im think of getting this t480 for work till i can get good money to buy a better laptop
go for it 😉
Hi i have a kenovo laptop and for some teason i accidentally did some erird key combo abd it messed up my keybosrd. When i press r, the kets are wirriten as 'r5" or i is "i=". Is therr a way to fix jt? Ive been searching for hours wnd still hnable to fix it.
strange 😳, normally if you restart the machine, it should correct itself. otherwise make sure none of the keys are constantly pressed down
You probably changed the default language or smth
How is the performance so far brother? how long is the battery?
very good Bro, it’s been working excellently well 😉
How long does battery last before it needs charging?
mine pretty much lasts forever 😅. just kidding, but give that mine has an internal and external battery, i enjoy real solid battery life. In the end, it all depends on usage
Today i buy this one❤
Great 😉
Please how can i get this laptop in Nigeria ? Will appreciate your quick response.
Would it be good for college ? Getting a i7-8650 16GB and 500GB SSD for €450 or would something be better for that price range ?
(t480s)
they are both very good machines. personally i prefer the t480 😉
@@one_step_sideways Thanks for leaving these tips here
I don't know about undervolting a CPU.
For a second I thought you're Singaporean. Great Review though!
😉
Great review. Love your accent.
😉 thanks for the feedback
