2023 Mazda CX-90 Towing Review: Can It Tow Your Racecar?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 лют 2025
- Weekend warriors, rejoice! Mazda finally has an SUV that can tow your track car or racecar - the 2023 Mazda CX-90 is rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds. We had to try it for ourselves, so Mazda sent over a CX-90 Turbo S with the optional towing package. Our trailered load was an aluminum open trailer and a BMW E36 325is 'Spec3' racecar, coming in around 4,000 pounds.

Please keep doing these videos. I just bought a pathfinder to tow my track car based on your review. I think it's a huge service to the community. I don't know anyone else doing these kinds of videos for track people.
So glad it was helpful! Not seeing these types of videos or articles was a big motivator for starting the channel at all, so this feedback is great to hear. Pathfinder punched WAY above its weight from what I remember in 2022.
Continue to monitor towing with a CVT transmission... 😮😮😮for possible trans problems
The new Pathfinder doesn't have a CVT. It has a 9 speed ZF trans.
Thanks so much for doing this review! As the owner of an ND Miata street/track toy, and a 2017 Mazda 6 Grand Touring with growing mileage and age, I’m very interested in the CX-90 as my replacement for the 6 as a daily/family vehicle, and occasional tow vehicle for track events. I think I’ll be waiting on Mazda to work out a few of the “all-new platform” kinks with this one, as I’m definitely hearing some reliability and drivability complaints with the first model year, but this is helping solidify the CX-90 Turbo (or Turbo S) as this Mazda fanboy’s all-in-one solution for a year or two down the road. Appreciate all you do!
Hey Jake.. Love how you review towing. So Awesome. My only suggestion would be to include some MPG stats.
Thanks! Only thing with MPG is that it is SO variable based on the load being towed, shape of trailer, open vs enclosed, and terrain. Can definitely consider how to best represent it with future videos though!
Great review and love the styling ! Mazda has always had some great products over the years !
Shame it doesn’t come available with a TBC given the rating but sounds like it’s a pretty competent vehicle for the types of things most would use it for.
As it turns out, Mazda does have a "Premium Tow" package that will include a trailer brake controller - total package cost is $900 vs the shown "Essential Tow" for $700. But, Premier Tow is not yet available per the Build & Price tool.
@@OutMotorsports oh gotcha, that’s good at least.
Great video. I'd love to see them stick that i6 turbo into a sports car with a 6mt
Wouldn't we all! That'd be a riot.
Perfect, I just bought a '25 CX-70 Turbo S and I have a '95 M3 lol
Really nice job on this! I tow a lot and really apricate this often overlooked but critical aspect!
Glad it was helpful!
Great video with awesome down-to-earth language.
Glad you enjoyed!
Hi, thanks for this video. We have cx-90 280hp and I am wondering would it be possible and safe to tow a two axels U-Haul trailer from NJ to IL? There is my spouse, a two months old baby and a cat. We are moving 1 bdr apartment.
I just retired from car stuff, got me a CX5 for now (2000 lbs tow cap lol) , but I think I'll upgrade to a CX90 next
I'm buying one of these this week to tow a 2,700 (dry weight) camper. Can't wait!
Should be great for it, enjoy!
Have you towed your camper? If so, how did it go? I'm thinking of getting a camper with a dry weight of 2600lbs.
@@jaex26yes I did! We rented a Jayco camper - dry weight 2,675 lbs - pulled it like a dream. Hardly knew it was there! You will see a decrease in fuel efficiency though.
Did it affect the handsfree tailgate? Mazda installed a hitch on mine and then the handsfree liftgate doesn't work (GT trim) and the dealership said the options in the settings is just there by default and it actually doesn't have a hands-free liftgate lol. Doesn't make sense. Why put it as an option if its not there (and no i didn't test it in the dealership before buying)
Hey great review! It would be nice to know what MPG you were getting towing on the highway.
The sticker on my CX-90 has the max payload capacity at 1190 lbs. I wonder why yours says a 1000.
Just picked up our new CX90 this week. We have the factory installed trailer set up. Would I have a trailer brake setup from the factory?
Mazda offers two trailer packages on the CX-90 - Essential Tow and Premier Tow. Only Premier Tow includes a trailer brake controller and it's listed as "Coming Soon" on the build & price tool. So, you'll likely have the Essential Tow setup which is pre-wired for a controller but won't include one.
You can install something like a Tekonsha Prodigy P3, the gold standard for TBCs:
amzn.to/3TbAnhw
Or if you don't want to deal with any wiring, a Prodigy RF, which you plug in between the CX-90 and trailer and works without any wiring modification:
amzn.to/42TYmFg
@@OutMotorsports I'll actually only be pulling a bike trailer with a glide on it. (Less the 2000 combined) the trailer I have does not have brakes on it now and I had no trouble pulling two bikes on that trailer (about 3000 Lbs) with my Ford Flex Eco boost with factory 5000 lb tow package.
Is you hands free lift gate still works after the install?
Am I able to tow with an offmarket hitch?
Probably, yes, but it may fit differently vs the OEM hitch and may or may not allow the same level of integration with the CX-90's various towing and safety systems.
Is the turbo i6 non S capable of towing 5k lbs as well ?
Yes, but you have to get a 3.3 Turbo Premium Sport trim at a minimum. The lower 3.3 Turbo Select and 3.3 Turbo Preferred models are rated at 3,500 pounds.
Hello all. Can you tell me the tow ball down weight max on the cx90? In Australia the mazda cx90 only has 150kg (330lbs) tow ball down weight on the car's tow ball. With the 10% rule this only allows me to tow 1500kg (3300 lbs). Just wondering what tow bar you have on the car in the review ad Mazda informed me that thete is no upgrade tow kit, just the standard?
This car had the factory Mazda towing package installed. They may have different weight limits and hardware based on where the vehicle is sold - this is a U.S.-spec car.
