    Every time you do the car boot episode, I’m blown away by all the cool tech that made it to the island. Crazy! Great video as always!

    With reference to the beige socket 7 machine you will find between the keyboard connector and the top PCI slot is a break-out shield with a PS/2 mouse port.
    Your board has the i430VX chip-set and will accept up to 128mb of ram, so maybe worth an upgrade if you're going to hold-on to her.
    Also, I am a sign-writer by trade and in 1992 I ran a 286 machine with Windows 3.1 and CorelDraw 3 to make computer-cut vinyl graphics for signs, which for the time was leading edge tech and a lot faster than the brush.

    Infact, one machine I tore down the other day had and Asus P2B DS dual slot 1 mobo with 2 500mhz Piii, a Voodoo 3500 and a bunch of SCSI drives!
    Turns out the machine once belonged to a computer repair shop not far from me in Croyden and was like a time capsule of their operations and repairs from the early 2000's! 😮

    I have the same baby AT case as this one, exept mine has the 7 segment clock display. Mine is a pentium 166 with 64mb sim ram, QDI explorer II board, ISA sound blaster ct2890T and a cirrus logic 5446 graphics card. Bought it installed with win 98se (and the win98se cd included) happy ebay find about 3 weeks ago :)

    My guess is that the first pc was used as some sort of multi-user machine. One monitor per user and serial connections for the keyboards or mice. I made a similar setup with a Linux OS but with the keyboards/mice all connected via USB. The reason for the DVI-HDMI adapters (which I also used) is to standardise on the monitors.

    Go through the folders of the DOS pc. There are a lot of interesting foldernames: PCAD (eda software?), Toniamp (amp design?), preampli, QFdesign, Dynaudio (audio brand?), plspeaker etc. etc.

    My interest peaked when I saw MPLAB and its for PIC and AVR what version is it please ? Have a look and see if there is any EDA software from that period as what we have seen suggests the owner made PCBs as well ! and of course the picture featured Valves...cheers.

      At 25:30 there is a folder PCAD. According to Wikipedia that seems to have been an EDA.

    That’s a decent board. It’s like 15 yo but it should still rock and roll. Plus, they’re still worth cash. That ASUS Dual Processor TPU/EPU is an excellent find. Hell, the 1TB hard drive was an excellent find… everything else is gravy!!

    Glad the sandy motherboard is working, I had my money on a blown south bridge. It's really common for them to go bad on boards of that era.

    Might be interesting to show the free Samsung disk software which can report on the usage and status of their disks. Just wondering if it might explain the slow loading time.

    Good luck finding a serial mouse that works today. They never even worked very good in the past. But that motherboard may have the pins for a PS/2 connector? If it does then you might be able to add a riser to it. PS/2 predates that PC by 10 years. So it conceivably could support it. There's also projects to adapt modern mice to serial. That may be a better solution today.

    • @DJLKM1
      @DJLKM1 2 місяці тому

      The funny port Richard said was maybe a scanner port on the back was indeed a ps/2 mouse port, it's a breakout panel :) btw i picked up a brand new serial mouse less than a week ago for £30 and also bagged a brand new AT keyboard for £20 :D

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 2 місяці тому

      @@DJLKM1 oddly those keyboards all are adaptable. A passive adapter works from the big plug to the PS/2 plug. But mice are different. Well serial is different. Basically an AT keyboard jack is a PS/2 plug. At least as far as I know.

    • @DJLKM1
      @DJLKM1 2 місяці тому

      @@1pcfred Very true you can buy AT keyboard adapters, you can also buy serial adpaters for a ps/2 mouse, back in the day some thoughtful brands gave you a complimentry adapter in the box.
      Indeed ps/2 is just a mini Din with an extra pin evolved from the 5 pin AT din. The 6th pin if i recall is actually N/A lol. Only main difference between the two standards is the clock.

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 2 місяці тому +1

      @@DJLKM1 a PS/2 to serial adapter only works with specific mice. The conversion happens inside the mouse when it detects what it is plugged into. That's because serial is not compatible with PS/2. Only Logitech and Microsoft really worked. Basically if you didn't get the adapter getting an adapter wouldn't do you any good. But that didn't stop plenty of people from trying and being disappointed.

    • @LearnElectronicsRepair

      @@DJLKM1 I have a logitech serial to ps2 mouse adapter that came with a car boot PC a few weeks ago but it doesn't work, even with my old rubber ball PS2 mouse. Someone said those adapters only works with specific PS2 mice

      You must be mistaken the common capacities found on DDR2 sticks with the ones on DDR3, I have a i5 3570 a 4570 and a AMD FX8320 with 2x8GB, not sure if 16GB SIMMs where workstation/server only.
      Crazy to think that with DDR5 24GB, 32GB and 48GB sticks are a thing on end user platforms nowadays.
