I"m a Bengali from Calcutta.I studied in Calcutta University, though I studied Finance and Mathematics,I have deep love for History. Actually in Calcutta University,Sir Jadunath Sarkar was a great and great scholar student and Prof of Calcutta University long time back. A renowned Indian historian and scholar. He was most distinguished historians of medieval India. Sarkar's work on the decline of the Mughal Empire and the rise of Maratha power remains influential in Indian history. The Marathas indeed faced a historic defeat in the Third Battle of Panipat on January 14, 1761, against the Afghan king Ahmad Shah Abdali (Durrani), he got the permission from the Ottomans, very few Historian knew it . This battle was a turning point in Indian history, weakening the Maratha Empire and setting the stage for British colonial dominance. MARATHAS LOST IN THE ANGLO -MARATHA WAR. Before the battle, the Marathas sought alliances with various regional powers, including the Jats, Rajputs, and Sikhs, to counter Abdali's forces. However, these groups, wary of Maratha expansion and due to their own regional concerns, refrained from joining the Maratha cause. The lack of support isolated the Marathas, making their defeat in the battle even more decisive.HINDUS WERE DIVIDED AND STILL TODAY THEY ARE DIVIDED. This intense conflict resulted in tremendous casualties, marking it as one of the largest and bloodiest battles fought in the 18th century. The Marathas' defeat drastically weakened their influence in northern India, enabling British forces to strengthen their hold on the Indian subcontinent.THE MARATHAS ARE THE BRAVEST PEOPLE IN INDIA. Kulkarni Sir,a great knowledgeable person. Thanks Sir.
Marathas were also very headstrong and not strategic thinkers! They were also seen invaders by the common masses because they looted too much to common folks. That is the main reason they had to fight main battles alone, without support of the people around, and without supply lines. Defeat of Panipat is also because their supply lines were cut, and locals kings did not ally with the Marathas! Another issue was, they had a big contingent of old, women, children who were piggybacking to go to pilgrimage in North India! * All these issues and infighting, caused their downfall. * Sikhs on the other hand, helped EIC during Gadar, and never found the British when they were strong ... * Unity is strength, technology is strength, stealth/cunning-ness is strength - which were ALL not used when EIC fought these post mughal "semi" powers of Hindustan. * And that's why, now I have to live in NJ ! * Luv4rmNJ *
Hindus are divided...: On one thing they are 'united': loot, Vasooli, paisa pisa paisa .. Marathas were leaders of loot loot loot, vasooli vasooli vasooli, paisa paisa paisa, leading to the present day sobriquet: Lochlach Rao Vasoolikar? Ask Sharadbhau, Ajitdadaji, UddhavSahebji, Raja Raj Sahebji 'Hindu Samrat' Bala SAHEBji et C.
Dr Uday Kulkarni continues the glorious intellectual heritage of Maharashtra established by such scholars as Rajwade, Parasnis, Sardesai, Sarkar, Bhatkhande, Ratanjankar who came from outside the field to lay the foundation of research into our cultural heritage. By writing and publishing in English, Dr Kulkarni has done the country a huge service. I hope he gets the success and recognition that he richly deserves. The Marathas were the last people of India to taste political and economic power. Their history must be understood to appreciate where modern India has come from.
@@jsm3692 my reading of history is a little more nuanced. The rapaciousness of the BEIC meant that the Indian subcontinent was convulsed with too much conflict. Leaders like Ahilya Devi and Mahadji Shinde, if allowed a few more years of peace, could have changed things around. Mahadji Shinde was probably the wisest of all the Maratha potentates after Shivaji, Baji Rao Peshwa, and Madhav Rao Peshwa. He eclectically chose the best of European inputs to improve his administration of North India from his base in Gwalior. As long he was around, the British were kept confined to a smaller role as his military power more than matched that of the British. In the ultimate analysis, Britain's trajectory was on a sharper rise compared to that of India and eventually succeeded in overwhelming India. But Britain destroyed India's well being within 150 years and reduced the subcontinent to a state to penury and misery. The part of India that the Marathas brought under their control became the modern Republic of India, and the parts they lost to the Afghans and the British became Bangladesh and Pakistan. If it weren't for the Marathas, the Radcliff line would have run along the entire length of the Grand Trunk Road south of the Yamuna from Punjab to Bengal and modern India would have been limited only to the peninsular portion of India.

@@jitendivgi2761 Your analysis on the probable impact on Radcliffe line sans Maratha empire is definitely thoughtful. However I definitely feel, the time from dissolution of Maratha Empire in 1818 to appointment of Sir Cyrill Radcliffe in June 1947, there is a time difference of 127 years, which is massive. It was this time when Indian societies saw a massive change by accepting and at the same time opposing British administration. During these period we Indians had already accepted so called McCauley education and the imprints were deep in our ancestors mind. The anglicized way of thinking, new social reformations, movement of people due to developed rail and travel, dialogue and exchange of ideas, values changed the entire social structure and the demography of India. I know such changes are never overnight, it's a slow chain reaction. Therefore the impact of Maratha rule on India till partition is quiet negligible. This is my personal thought, which I could be wrong.

Unlike the rajputs and other North indian kingdoms, Marathas, starting from Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, always fought against the intruders and outsiders like Mughals, Afgans, British, Portuguese, and tried to keep india integrated. In fact, the Middle, West, and entire South India remain safe because of the Valor of the Marathas. That's the fact.
@ramkumarpandey4865 Again, the misinformation spread by wrong people. Marathas always protected indigenous people against outsiders and Mughals. Marathas did a lot of social work in the north and middle of India. Rajputs were always loyal to Mughals and never fought against the outsiders like afgans or british, which a fact
@mands406 I fully respect the Marathas for their contributions, having lived in Rajasthan and Maharashtra. It is true that they largely removed the Mughal rule from India. They built several temples in Varanasi as well. However, like everything, there are also some darker aspects of Maratha history, which most people in Maharashtra may not know. Also, I'm neither Maratha nor Rajput, who, for some reason, often look down upon each other and are biased toward their respective communities. - Rajputs have been defending India from Arab invasions since the advent of Islam. They significantly slowed down the Islamic expansion. While Islam spread rapidly up to Iran, it faced considerable resistance in India for three to four centuries. - Rajputs were battling Alauddin Khilji's Afghan forces when they conquered the Yadavas of Devgiri. - Until the time of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, many Maratha generals served Muslim kingdoms in the Deccan. This includes Shivaji Maharaj’s father. - After the Treaty of Purandar, Shivaji Maharaj was unfortunately compelled to form an alliance with the Mughals for some time and act against the Deccan Sultanate. - Even after Shivaji Maharaj, several Maratha Sardars continued to serve the Deccan Sultanate and Aurangzeb. - During the Sultanate army’s campaign against the Vijayanagar Empire, there were substantial numbers of Marathas fighting for them. - It was the Marathas who betrayed Sambhaji Maharaj, leading to his execution. - There are instances of Marathas fighting with Afghans against Rajputs in the north. - The Marathas employed the Pindaris, who were notorious for looting villages and killing people, particularly in Bengal. - There are several officially documented communications within the records of different Rajputana kingdoms about the Marathas ransacking villages. - Their Chauth and Sardeshmukhi taxes were extremely high, even exceeding what the Mughals used to levy. - These high taxes and other policies contributed to the lack of allies for the Marathas at the Battle of Panipat. They even threatened to arrest SurajMal Jat, who was willing to help them. - After losing the Battle of Panipat, when Jat king Suraj Mal gave refuge to many Marathas, they still attacked his kingdom a few years later. - Mahadji Shinde worked with the Mughal king for an extended period. In fact, he played a key role in reinstating the Mughal king as a ruler. For this, Mahadji Shinde was awarded the title of Nizam-ul-Mulk. - When the Marathas were in Punjab, they allied with Adina Beg, who was known for his persecution of Sikhs.
History writing is a contentious topic and is the reason for much debate and discussion. Over the years a new breed of Historians have begun to challenge the status quo through books that look at periods of our history from an indigenous/non-Colonial/non-Marxist lens. Dr. Uday S Kulkarni is an eminent example - he has written 10 books on Maratha History and has done painstaking research on the period. Although we have hosted him on Bharatvaarta many times, this was our first in person interaction. We discuss many aspects of the fascinating episode of Narayanrao Peshwa's assassination and what followed after in this very engaging conversation. Thank you to my friend, Amit Paranjape, for his support in enabling this interaction and also the production crew for their meticulous effort. Hope you enjoy this podcast, friends! If you do, then please so share it with your friends and family - and please also buy Dr. Kulkarni's books (links in the description). Happy Deepavali in advance! 🙂🙏 PS - In the intro, I have mentioned Naraynrao as son of Madhavrao, while he was the younger brother. Regret the error! 🙏
We can never study history from reverse because the conditions prevailing also culture was unimaginable Also we can never trust the Bramins who treated Sc St people like animals
Have not seen the podcast but just the introductory sentence "Tombs were made instead of cannels and wells" is such a BIG EYE OPENER. Those vandalizers who tried to rule our country did such big abuses with people, culture and courtry as a whole. Now we are truly trying to recover . We people must bear in mind that all those who abuse us now must be countered unitedly by all.KEEP making such PODCASTs.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Today's people who complaint about current Govt. must give the reply to the majority positive humans that would they prefer "Tombs to Tools" ?? People today are unnecessarily abusing governments should get ready for consequences...

56:00 I am from Rajasthan, I can correct Mr kulkarni here. Sindh faced 18 attacks, even though sindh was lost but same time chieftan of khalifa also killed. While Sindh was facing brutal islamic attacks, Rishi Harit did some what similar what Chankya did with leader as 'Bappa Rawal' and established Mewar kingdom whose borders were upto Rajasthan, Gujarat, parts of MP and parts of Punjab under Mewar kingdom ultimately ruling Delhi. Bappa Rawal army fought Caliph Arab army and defeated him and conquered sindh again. One of wife of Bappa Rawal was Caliph's sister(gifted as part of treaty). For next 50-80 years there were no attacks due to agreement however after that attacks began and very frequent. Rajput kings were consolidated during that time and even bhati raja tag line was "Uttar bhad kiwad bhati" i.e. Bhatis are gates of North, no one can enter until Bhati is lost. The biggest mistake was done by prithviraj chauhan and then rest was history. That said even Aurangzeb never tried to attack Mewar, only in Rajasthan one can find temples 1000's of years old. We in current may find a lot of deficiencies of ancestors but our ancestors must be laughing and furious with us as what chance we have and what we are doing, letting away everything so easily.. see the demographic change around yourself
Excellent. Thank god you are talking in English. I am tired to those people mixing Hindi, English, Marathi, etc. Many have pronunciation like इतिहासा, अर्जुना, पुराणाज, रामा, रावणा, etc. Please continue with any one language with correct pronunciation like this one.
It is fascinating to listen to Dr. Kulkarni. The command of events, dates, and key players is remarkable. I look forward to reading his books, if available to order, and for discussions on the stirring events in Maratha history that occurred between 1778 and 1803.
Have watched the full podcast , firstly was very much impressed by the easy of language both of them were using . It is possible only when you have good hold on your language. As for the content of the podcast , pointwise explanation was quite impressive . History has always a good impact on our mind and Maratha history which is a gem on the cap as it had turned tables of our existence for we Indians.
I'm sure he has referenced these but I would like to point out to him that Mudhoji College in Phaltan (State of the Nimbalkars in Satara district) also has several original Bakhars and such documents in its library. I have seen them myself but did not know their importance, till now.😃
Some people say that Marathas went to fight Abdali just because Najeeb and Abdali killed Dattaji Shinde (one of sadars of Marathas in North) and not to defend the nation. So, even then I mention about Ahamadia Karar (1752) between Marathas and Mughals in which Mughals declared Marathas as their protector from its adversaries like Afgans, can there be any better counter argument to the point that some say about Marathas and their will to defend the nation, all the people who spread this narrative that Marathas didn't want to defend the nation but take revenge of Dattaji's murder by abdali and najeeb are mostly found to be lefitist its my observation
Today on the western front or boarders of western India is the extend of Maratha empire were Hindus and others were not slaughtered by the mogols then.
I believe Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is a greatest general of those Times because he United 12 CASTS and make it a single force "The Mighty Marathas"....
No doubt shivaji was the bravest hindu warrior king, who had to fight moghuls and bamini sultans. I do not underestimate Krishna deva raya but Marathas were in the picture for very long time.
Thank you! Glad you liked the content - do share our videos with friends and family. Also, let us know your suggestions on who we should host / topics we could cover. Thanks again! :)
Well it was a fantastic and interesting history of Marathas and Peshavas where you come closer to the fact that happened in the past and how lost our rich heritage due to some silly mistakes.
Dr. Kulkarni should point out the role of indians who fought in anglo maratha wars betraying the mighty marathas and paved the way for britishers to rule india for next 150 years.
The loss of IIIBattle of Panipat was soley due to overconfidence of PM of Maratha Empire the Peshwa. Every important chieftain tried to dessuade him not to takr women and old with the army marching for battle. However he made it a pilgrimage and battle took a back seat. Resulting in loos of speed and agility.
Narayanrao Peshwa was not Peshwa Madhavrao’s son as mentioned by the host. He was his younger brother. And he was not ‘ very young’; he was 18 years old, married, with a son who later became Peshwa himself. These are extremely well known facts. I’m just surprised and a bit disappointed at the level of research that these podcasts do.
Raghoba had a great desire to be peshwa .he was bajirao 1 son and younger brother of nanasaheb .when vishwasrao died in panipat ,his brother madhavrao became peshwa .when madhavrao did of tb, his brother Narayan Rao was coronated .by this logic raghoba who was brother of nanasahib should have been peshwa as per his desire .it did not take place.in anger he took the criminal path and surrendered to the British .

Maratis like Gokale, Tilak were elder citizens who took up.the cause of Bharat and we're pained to see Mata Bharat chained. We owe them a lot. I respect them a lot.
Tilak was casteist as hell. He ran a very long and vicious campaign against Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj who opposed brahminism, fought against casteism, and gave reservation in his presidency to bahujans for education. Tilak was dead opposed to bringing Dalits into mainstream politics. I am Congress supporter but I know history is not as it seems, tilak's casteism is carefully ignored

It is wrong to refer to to ascent of a new peshwa as"ascending the throne". Peshwa was a 'hudda', a post to which the official was appointed. Peshwa was not a monarch. The Chatrapati was the monarch.

Reality is after 1749, means after Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj Thorle(Satara)passsd away, Maratha Empire got more decentralised, which obviously is helpful for administration purpose. But it created more independent powers, who wanted to overpower each other, which unfortunately leads to peshwa bajirao 2 signing a stupid treaty with brits in 1802 and empire starts falling down.

Pindaris were the non regulars of army who did not Recieve salary from Peshwa and only depended on loot gained from battles .. So there only option was to loot and earn for themselves.. But royal army is only 20000 20000 army of Pindaris were employed..

Marathas were the last great empire of India. Not the Sikh Empire aka the Empire of Western Punjab. It was a regional power. Marathas at their peak ruled over lands stretching from Khyber (with plans of capturing Kabul & Kandahar) to Cuttack and parts of Bengal. From Jammu & borders of Sindh to all the way to Tamil Nadu. Only Marathas ruled so much territory at that time. No other Indian Empire achieved that. That includes Sikh Empire too. So Maratha Empire was the last great 'All-India' Empire. The Marathas indeed faced a historic defeat in the Third Battle of Panipat on January 14, 1761, against the Afghan king Ahmad Shah Abdali (Durrani), he got the permission from the Ottomans, very few Historian knew it
*
All these issues and infighting, caused their downfall.
*
Sikhs on the other hand, helped EIC during Gadar, and never found the British when they were strong ...
*
Unity is strength, technology is strength, stealth/cunning-ness is strength - which were ALL not used when EIC fought these post mughal "semi" powers of Hindustan.
*
And that's why, now I have to live in NJ !

Rt.
Unfortunately, Maratha rule was exceptionally brutal in Rajputana, Bengal and Orissa. Maratha Sardar in North have reduced themselves to Vasuli Bhai

Actually after Chatrapati Shahu Maharajas death, few selfish ministers wanted to rule and their conspiracy against that time Chatapatis, Rajaram-II and Chatrapati Pratap Singh, I thing this is one of the major reason for Maratha power decline. The common people and Maratha Army were having trust and love for Chatrapati. All Chatrapati kings were pride of those people.
All peshwas were having different style of rule. During peshwa rule they once again started treating badly with backward class people. This was demolished by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
This also divided people and create anger against Peshwa. This was one of the reason Pewsha lost Bhima Koregaon battle to British, because British Army was having Lots local soldiers who were not happy with Peshwa for the treatment they were giving to untouchable people.
This would have been Chatrapati rule, those soldiers would not have fought against Chatrapati. The picture could have been different.
Peshwa tried that time to get support from Chatrapati Pratap Singh that time, but he was small in age and it was too late, at the same time people were aware of conspiracy of Peshwa against Chatrapati.
If you ask me these ministers were traitors and treason’s to Swarajya.
Narayanrao was not Madhavrao's son. He was youngest brother of Madhavrao peshwa.
Indeed, Sir. I have corrected it in my comment. Thanks for watching, do share this channel and content with your friends!
Madhava Rao 2 or Sawai Madhavarao is Narayana Raos son
I did BA Hons in History. Took me 20 years to unlearn all that BS we were fed.

Raghunathrao has to be on the top of the list of "most incompetent son of a great father".

Dear g@@ndu puneet please keep your mouth shut about issues you don't know.
Raghunathrao was very competent. Only thing was his people did not supported him
@@kaustaubh1234 No. He was short-sighted and didn't get along with anyone. Exact opposite of his father. All he had was low cunning and ruthlessness of a cutthroat, that's all.
Nanasaheb wasn't a genius either but at least he didn't make things worse. None of Bajirao's sons were as good as him
Deadly Battle of 3rd Panipat... which has changed the course of Indian history.... was the lost due to the CAST Supremacy attitude of Sadashiv Rao..... still marathas are dying in Balochistan because of that idiotic decision....
Marathas and Hindu Swaraj are synonyms ❤

I would like to know more about Pindharis
Also,in various excerpts also mentioned that marathas also were similarly involved in looting, idk which era it was but the delhi has seen that...need some clarity and truth
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching, do share this channel and content with your friends!
Pindaris were the non regulars of army who did not Recieve salary from Peshwa and only depended on loot gained from battles ..
So there only option was to loot and earn for themselves..
Royal army was directly paid by Peshwa.
Marathas employed these strategy to increase there strength of soldiers as and when required..
For e.g u need 40000 soldiers in Delhi ..
But royal army is only 20000
20000 army of Pindaris were employed..
There were many armies of mercinaries that Maratas employed
When people started pointing out
Americans & their followers started claiming it was "conspiracy theory". People started ignoring crimes & finally have to pay karma.

The last Empire in Bharat to fall to the English was not Marathas....it was the Khalsa Raj, against whom the Marathas fought along with the British.

With due respect to the Marathas...the last great empire of India was the Sikh Empire...the last one to fall to the British
@@parampreetmib2011 the fact that Sher e panjab ranjisinghji massacred the Afghans no end was the evidence that Afghans were in the decline .nadir shah succeeded because of infighting of Mughal commanders and abdali succeeded because of infighting among the marathas, ladies and no food ,total ignorance of northindia battle ,weather conditions .....for abdali it was equal loss and only a phyrric victory .
Thanks for watching, do share this episode with your friends and family. Happy Deepavali!
@@jagdishramanathan2091 There was no infighting among the Marathas in 1761...
So it was in this sense that the author aka speaker is referring to the Maratha Empire as the last great empire of India. Also, Nepalese Empire aka Nepal remained independent. It suffered territorial losses but survived and remained independent...
Narayanrao was younger brother of Madhavrao, not his son. Their elder brother Vishawasrao was killed in Panipat war along with their uncle Sadashivrao bhau.
Yes sir, corrected this in the comments. Thanks for watching, do share this episode with your friends and family.
Narayan Rao was the younger brother of Madhav Rao Peshwa and not his son as being stated.

7.05, it's not 1774, it's 1674 when Chatrapati Shivaji was crowned, guess it's a slip of tongue.

The loss of panipat still feels bitter
We have never won any decisive battle from terain in 1191
Only rulers I know is maharaja ranjit singh and peshwa bajirao who won decisive battles and war and yes the ahoms
Rest all are just foolish bravado or some childish folklore
Our warrior class rajputs were the biggest supporters of mughals so no one was there to fight muslims.
@@SidhantDhagare-gw3fj early rajput chieftains and kings did fight against invaders but they all lost badly
Even Raghunath rao won Delhi , Lahore, attock Multan Peshwar.
Again marathas won in 1771 captured Delhi.
RaghuJi Raje Bhonsle defeated and captured southern India, and defeated Nawab Alivardi khan of Bengal.
Vijayanagaram Samarajyam Krishna Dev Raya,
Kapilendra Gajpati also won battle, Maharna sangram Singh also won the battle
@@SidhantDhagare-gw3fjvery true. If only they had supported the Marathas at Panipat.
@@ramkrishnan8476The problem in case of Marathas was that the way they dominated other ruling classes without any respect prevented others to side with them...There overconfidence was seen when they ignored Surajmal's advice and paid a hefty price in Panipat

Peshwas were responsible for the defeat of Marathas at Panipat 1761.... Sadashiv bhau was fully responsible for that....and including his Father Nanasaheb Peshwa
Yea he was an emotional fool, not suitable for the battlefield with his mental state
Bengal famine he is referring to was because of opium cultivation, pl read the latest book of Amitav Ghosh...I agree with him on religious renaissance of 18th century but it was not cultural one that ended with 17th century...social history is very important, what happened to the economy of Maharashtra in 18th century has to be understood....we need to understand why people were not happy with Peshwa's in early 19th century...he does not mention great T S Shejwalkar, is it because he was very critical of Peshwas?

Sorry but Maratha Empire was there during the British too, but not as strong as it once was
@anurag9666 exactly there were cracks already. best leadership like Chatrapati, peshwa bajirao, sambhaji raje all were gone. That's why British dare engulfed maharashtra and india
In mughal era our GDP was how much in relation to world? I heard that it was quite high. Is it because of mughals. Mughals did not send the wealth created to other countries, like the british did.
It is such a sad story to listen to Maratha empire the hope of Bharat becoming a sovereign state with Sanathan dharma. Due to mere infight and bigoted thoughts handed the land from Mughals to British.

BEFORE BLOODY MUSLIM CAME TO BHARAT,, BHARAT WAS 45% OF TOTAL ECONOMY ,, WHEN THEIR DOWNFALL THEN ALSO 25% ECONOMY,, IN SPITE OF STARTED SO CALLED REVOLUTION, RENAISSANCE AND OHTER THINGS
Nothing bloody innit
They came they conquered it was our bloody kings and ancestors who could not defeat them
The spanish did a whole thousand year war to kick the muslims out
The muslims had invaded them till the last square mile they had even reached france
But thier kings stood and and won battles unlike ours who just kept losing
Please dont exaggerate and give wrong facts. The entire rechristianisation of Spain took 1 generation - the reign of Isabella and Ferdinand. The same Ferdinand and Isabella who financed Columbus' expedition. Yes our rulers made mistakes. We all do. Giving gyan from hindsight is easy. s@@Chiga-lt6vq
If our kings lost, how is it that Hindus are still in existence?
In their down fall india was 14 percent of world GDP and before they came in the gupta kal or mauryan reign india was 35 to 36% of world GDP followed by song Dynasty china at second place.
Monuments were great source of employment
Same employment based construction of churches and monuments were carried out all over the world.

Chhatrapati 1749 me swargwasi ho gate the unke koi beta nahin tha uske bad se God liye hue hain sare, and Sahu ji majaraj ke time se hi Military campaigns peshwas hi karte the Chattrapati yuddhh me ni jate the.

Sivaji whom the right wing are holding as a poster boy who has the respect of all Indians was not crowned as a king by Brahmins as he was lower caste

Greediness is reason behind fall of Maratha empire, greed of money, power & land. Lack of admistrasion or qualify in admistrasion. They should focus on school & college in country, then temple 🛕.
