  • Ride with us on one of the best roads in South Dakota's Black Hills, Iron Mountain Road. Not a road to hurry on, Iron Mountain Road was built to slow you down and enjoy the Black Hills. Starting on the southern end of the road we arrive at Keystone after 17 miles with 314 curves, 14 switchbacks, 3 tunnels, and 3 pigtails.
    Featuring Paul Black's song "Fork in the Road"

    Rode this in the rain last Thursday 8/3/23. Even in the rain- it was absolutely gorgeous. 10/10 route. Should be on every riders bucket list.

      It does not rely on distant views and large landscapes to make it a good ride, so I can see it being good even in the rain! I hope your other Black Hills rides aren't to wet, but sounds like you can handle it!

      Very cool! I have ridden this road during the rally, but I really preferred it after the rally is over with much less traffic.
      I usually try to plan my rides to have the sun at my back for filming purposes, it just usually turns out better.

    My Cuz and Myself rode this area in July 11 2017. We are adventures. We try to ride all the two lane roads possible. We rode our Goldwings through the area. Will ride again June 2019, on our way from the West Coast to the East Coast. Don't think I could handle 8000 miles on My 2012 Harley Deluxe. Thanks for the Great video's.

      I am continuing, so yes, more videos are in the works. My videos are quite labor intensive, probably a good 40 hours of editing time for each one, and right now I am working on several projects at once getting things ready for new releases, plus following doctor's orders of keeping my foot above my heart for most of the day until the swelling goes down.
      I really appreciate the comment. Comments like this keep me encouraged, so please keep them coming.
      Thanks again, Robert

    Great video. I like that you didn't speed the video up to make it seem like you ride faster than you do, like some youtubers try to . This video gives a great sense of the road and what it's like to ride it on a cruiser.

      Thank you.
      I am an average rider, and I want to create videos for everyone to enjoy, average riders included. I want to encourage everyone to go out and enjoy the ride, their ride, not someone else's, and to encourage them that they are good enough to do it. It would be counter productive to that end to make people feel that I my riding skills are so superior to their's that they just shouldn't try, or that they go out and ride to fast for their abilities, and then not enjoy the ride, or worse, get hurt. Your comment encourages me that I am doing it right and I really appreciate your taking the time to write it. Again, Thank You.

      Thank you! I do want to ride at that perfect balance of just enough speed that everything flows easily but slow enough to see the scenery. And Iots of stops, to take a little time to really enjoy the sights ( I often edit out the stops just to keep the flow of the video).

    Nice ride. How do find good music like this?

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  2 роки тому

      Thanks Sheldon. This vid features Paul Black. I first heard Paul on UA-cam and really enjoyed his music. Later I got in touch with him and explained what I did and asked if he would license me to use his music in my vids. He agreed, I drew up a basic license, and here we are. A similar story applies to the other artists I use, Sean Ashby and The Chitlins.
      I have noticed music on some of your vids, I like it. Your selections have been nice background pieces, appropriate for your vids. Not sure your source but I know UA-cam has lots of free music available and have used some of it a couple times. I think your vids do well with just a little background music, like you did in the trip to the falls.

    Great video. At the 18 second time point of the video while on Hwy 36 I noticed some steel grates across the highway. Was there any issue riding over them? Seem like it went well and there's no concern.

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  5 місяців тому +1

      Steel grates on the highway are reasonably common on secondary highways and roads where cattle are on open range or in the case you saw wildlife are being restricted movement to other areas. They are often made of heavy steel pipe and place on the highway where a fence is to replace an actual gate across the road. In my area we call them cattle guards but they are often called Texas Gates in other parts. In the vid the guard was to stop the Bison from using the road to leave the park. Generally they are of little concern to ride over but use the same methods as crossing a railway track, try to be vertical not leaned over, maintain your speed not braking or accelerating, and cross them square on if possible. If it is wet or frosty be sure to apply all those rules double. Many cattle guards also have running strips placed on top of them to provide a smooth surface for car tires, some riders use these strips to cross but I prefer not to because if your approach isn't perfectly aligned it can act like grooved pavement and pull the bike around a bit. Now for my question, what part of the world are you from that you have not encountered these? I am just so used to them being around all my life I rarely take note of them.

    • @sandtrap9
      @sandtrap9 4 місяці тому +1

      @@RobertMerz I'm from the north east. Specifically Winchester VA. About 50 miles west of Washington DC. Close to Skyline Drive National Park. To be honest the first time I saw "Cattle" gates was during an episode of Yellowstone. :)

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  4 місяці тому

      They are just one of those things we grew up with in the west so don't think much of them. We have lots of open range, government land that cattle owners can obtain a permit to range their cattle on, and that is where you will most likely encounter them. It is easy to think that everywhere in the world is the same, and it is good to be reminded that it isn't, thank you.

    What’s a Pigtail ?

    • @RobertMerz
      @RobertMerz  3 роки тому

      A switchback is a road corner that takes you through about a 180 degree turn, so you would be traveling in the opposite direction upon exiting the corner from when you entered the corner. The purpose of such a corner is usually for elevation gain. A pigtail is basically the same as a switchback except it is 360 degrees or more, and you exit the corner in the same approximate direction as you entered it but with a change in elevation.
