Hi, so I'm in the middle of the intake removal. I counted 5 bolts above and 5 below right? The through 6 mm Allen in the side of the thermostat housing gave/giving me a pain. However; I've backed it out about 8 mm but won't go any further (for some reason) but It must be clear of the head because I can slide a hacksaw blade between the intake and head where it obviously goes through. I'm missing a bolt or nut somewhere...I'll find it though. I guess I'll have to buy a new thermostat housing because can't get that crazy bolt to come out any further. What were the Toyota engineers thinking??
Hi. This vid was very helpful. I have a 93 Toyota piickup 22re. Timing chain broke while driving slow. 225k miles. My question is this. Is the 22re a interference engine? I'm worried about bent valves but can't do compression check until I install new chain etc. Thanks in advance
Taking my 22re head off with the help of this video saved me a lot of time and frustration. I'm battling some pre-detonation that I've thrown the book at and figured with all the quarantine downtime I would clean up all the carbon in the combustion chambers and intake. Would you still get the head resurfaced before installing new gasket or can I just razor blade the surface? Anything else you suggest I check while the head is off (aside for timing chain guides)? No other bad symptoms other than the pre-detonation. Thanks!
Depends on what was causing the pre- detonation. If it was indeed the carbon in the cylinder then cleaning that out should help and I always surface the head before reinstalling but you run the risk of having to running head saver shim if it has been machined before. Was it using any oil? If it had any smoking on start up or was using any oil then it would be a good idea to replace the valve seals while the cylinder head is off.
@@ThePracticalMechanic Hasn't been losing oil at a totally noticeable rate but it does smoke out the exhaust a tad on start up. Compression was ~ 164 for two of the cylinders and 185 for the other two. At either rate, I'll measure to see how much the head has already been machined (I'm not the original owner) and go from there. Thanks again!
@@ThePracticalMechanic Also the TDC markings on the Camshaft Gear and Harmonic Balancer aren't perfectly aligned but I heard this is something that is on purpose for 22re's. E.g. when TDC is set on balancer, TDC marking on gear is a wee bit left of actual TDC.

How do you make sure timing chain doesn't come off the crank sprocket when you drop it down the hole? It seems like mine did because the cam is lined up tdc but the notch on the crank pulley is off to the left about an inch? Do I have to take off crank case cover to accurately put the chain on the bottom sprocket or is there a trick?
Attention, red alert, do not drop the chain down the hole if planning on doing heaf gadket change and not wanting to pull off crank case cover to make sure timing chain is on corrects tooth on crank gear. Nice vid but that fuct me.
I’ve never needed to pull the timing cover unless I was also replacing chain and guides. The timing cover is supposed to have a ridge built in below the crank sprocket in order to keep the chain in place. If this ridge is missing then the chain could reposition. I just make sure my camshaft marks line up when the balancer is on TDC. If not I take the cam gear back off and move the chain to the proper position.
@ThePracticalMechanic my mechanic said tie it u p to the hood. Holding tension on it making sure it doesn't drop off the crank gear and then thread it through when you're ready to put the head on

Ah I see. These old 22re Engines don’t have torque to yield bolts but the bolts are normally in bad shape after the last 30 yrs of use. It’s still a good ideal to change them. Make sure to measure the head to see if you need a head shim. I’ll have to check my notes but I think the stock thickness is 3.800 or 3.400”. If the head has been cut too many times it retards the camshaft and you loose bottom end torque. Also make sure you brave the timing chain kit with one metal guide. @@TylerHenricksen343 you can try loosening the adjusting screws so there is less pressure on the valve and rocker. Make sure you are installing the assembly the correct orientation. There are alignment dowels under the rocker assembly or in the cylinder head. Make sure you don’t have a dowel in the rocker assembly and the head.
I think a gorilla worked on this truck before me, I had to put about 200 pounds onto some of those head bolts to get them off. And I put my torque wrench on it to see and I stripped the teeth in it.

You can still set it to top dead center. Easy way to do is pull the valve cover and rotate the engine until the arrow points up on the camshaft sprocket.

i regret buying this truck so much. it was running fine but i just tested compression and its like 30psi. on all the cylinders. im not sure how this is possible. it only has 160k miles and im so sad the engine is gonna need the head pulled. its unreal cause it was running without any issues. it was only startsup that became harder and harder. im gonna pull the valve cover but either way if i have to pull up those head bolts then ill need to replace the head gasket. i wasnt expecting this engine to have these issues with only 160k miles. its crazy cause what i hear and thats why i bought it, but in my experience i will never buy another one

Make sure you are installing the assembly the correct orientation. There are alignment dowels under the rocker assembly or in the cylinder head. Make sure you don’t have a dowel in the rocker assembly and the head.
Is it easier to take the motor out?
I think a gorilla worked on this truck before me, I had to put about 200 pounds onto some of those head bolts to get them off. And I put my torque wrench on it to see and I stripped the teeth in it.
At what points do you measure the cylinder head to see if it's been resurfaced and what is standard factory?
@@StanKindly from the top of the valve cover mating surface to the cylinder head surface. Original spec is 3.800” if I remember correctly.
@@ThePracticalMechanic Bingo! right on it - it's a new Vevor (Chinese) which are getting pretty good reviews. The price was certainly right at $200...I figure the old one was a J&C (now the Cylinder Head Shop) which I've read some not so good reviews. Anyway, we'll see. The rings probably don't have that much life left so nothing to lose really. Thanks!
If I’ve already removed the distributor can I
Still set the engine to top dead center? Or does the distributor need to be reinstalled ?
You can still set it to top dead center. Easy way to do is pull the valve cover and rotate the engine until the arrow points up on the camshaft sprocket.
What are the brand names of the tools that you use?
Could I hire you to do this head gasket job on my Toyota?
Where do you get your headcasket kit
i have a 1987 4runner too
that is another issue that concerns me is that the truck is so old .. where do i go for parts if i need them?
Parts are still available from almost any parts store. This engine was used in the US until 95 and even longer in other counties. Napa, carquest, rock auto, dealer.
Great Vid.
Do you have a source for that power steering pump switch/valve?
Both auto parts stores couldn't find it in their database?
'89 22re with 160K
Thanks!
Subbed and liked 👍
I did some digging and come up empty handed for the original style vacuum valve. I don't know if the newer valve will fit or not. The Toyota dealership may have to look at the old microfiche to get the part number
i have a blown head casket on a 1994 toyota pick up 4 cylinder 22re engine. i am a poor boy and will attempt to do the work on my own. I am doing my home work now that is how i found your site
i would like to know what equipment you use and what the processes is to upload youtube videos because would like to put my journey on youtube..
A cell phone will do the trick but it’s a lot of work.
were those heads steel or aluminum
Aluminum
when you take the valve cover off , will the casket have to be replaced?
The head gasket set will come with a new gasket for the valve cover. Don’t buy just a head gasket, get the complete set.
About how much would a shop charge to do this
Really depends on the damage. Most will be $1500-3000. Many shops are cutting back on these repair jobs opting for complete engine replacement only
What state and city is your shop located at?
Southern Colorado. 2 hrs south of Denver.
how do you git it to top dead center
Once you have the valve cover off you will be able to see the timing mark on the camshaft sprocket. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise until the dot on the camshaft sprocket is at the 12 o’clock position.
man i took mine apart probably wont be able to get it back together lol
Good
i regret buying this truck so much. it was running fine but i just tested compression and its like 30psi. on all the cylinders. im not sure how this is possible. it only has 160k miles and im so sad the engine is gonna need the head pulled. its unreal cause it was running without any issues. it was only startsup that became harder and harder. im gonna pull the valve cover but either way if i have to pull up those head bolts then ill need to replace the head gasket. i wasnt expecting this engine to have these issues with only 160k miles. its crazy cause what i hear and thats why i bought it, but in my experience i will never buy another one
@@thenman23 I would check the timing chain first. It may not be a head gasket issue
@ThePracticalMechanic Yes I didn't assume head gasket but valve issue i.e pull head but you were right! I just looked and the right guide has broken off completely. I overreacted a bit maybe
Where can i find Valerie’s UA-cam channel
MrPalvis You can find Valerie’s channel Valamilk here ua-cam.com/users/vmascarenas
Brand new fully loaded head on eBay under $300.
Where u located
Southern Colorado
Don't like the way your running that wrench before you get it on the bolt head
This is really far out! You could say I have a 22RE boner....since I have owned this engine for over 30 years, no major repairs needed.
That’s great Paul. No little blue pills needed when you drive a 22RE. Thanks for joining in on the livestream today!!!
Bro I can’t believe what I’m watching there is no way you’re getting that thing running again. I don’t even know where to begin. No labeling, no proper diagnosis, what if the customer couldn’t afford extra work, dropped the timing guides. Unbelievable
🤣 I’ve had dozens of these apart and often reassemble them after someone else has taken them apart. Vehicle was indeed reassembled and ran fine. Just because diagnostics wasn’t performed in this live stream doesn’t mean that diagnostics wasn’t performed.
Dude a fairly good vid but you talk waaaay too much about non 22RE parts. Wasting time.
