At about 28:40, Paul double nuts the exhaust studs and uses a torque wrench to "apply a steady pressure as close to 36 ft-lbs as possible, until the stud stops turning." I did this, but the stud never stopped turning. My torque wrench was well under 36 ft-lbs of torque. The stud is steel. The cylinder head is aluminum. I cracked my Rav's cylinder head at the bolt hole.
My bad; I should have known better. The studs, by themselves, should not be torqued to 36 ft-lbs.
To help the viewer, I think this part of the video should be re-done.
Hi! I agree about the exhaust stud torque. Unfortunately I can't add any annotations to the video to correct it, and re-uploading it isn't really an option since many people have already linked to it in forums. I'll pin your comment and hope people see it.
A better torque spec would be about half: 18 ft-lb. The Toyota service manual says 36, but doesn't specify a different torque for the studs. I've never had a problem working on cars without a torque wrench, but when following specs over just feeling it out, you can get into trouble.
I've had bolts break and some of the other bolts wouldn't tighten to torque. Bolts snapped on their own. I didn't touch them.
You are the reason I bought a rav4, I know that there is accurate deep informational videos on this vehicle. Thank you!
Damn man you are legend , I followed your gide and everything went well. I'm russian speaker and I couldn't find any good informational videos how to replace head gasket in our source . Than I found your channel , best regards man and keep it up
Paul, making this video amounts to an act of heroism. When you do it - everything looks so orderly and nice. Everyone who dealt with this stuff knows how HARD it all is in reality. KUDOS to you man. Keep up this good work!
Thanks! yeah, this was a massive project. The video was a lot more work than fixing the car.
Where can I locate the obd2 port for the computer????
Thank you for your service. I can now fix my car. The people at Toyota seriously couldn't tell me that there's no belt tensioner for the alternator, and that it's called an alternator bracket. But the guy who manages the parts and knows the car can adamantly tell me that there is no belt tensioner period Made for that model vehicle except for the timing belt. Like come on man...
Also my pulley completely separated itself from the balancer I can slide it back and forth. Very fun stuff. Now I got to replace that part too. Supposed to be one part, now they're two, neet magic trick.
@@sonetechuse google
I dont own a Rav4, not even a 4 wheeled vehicle.
But still here I am, watching it fully.
I guess I need to buy a first gen Rav4 now...
Just completed my head gasket replacement yesterday thanks to this video!
Just wanted to say one thing for people following this tutorial step-by-step.
If you remove the power steering pump, be sure to re-install it before the wiring harness or timing covers. I only realized I hadn't done this once I got to the "Fill Power Steering Fluid" step.
Luckily I was able to squeeze it into position by removing the tie rod from the lower control arm.
My eternal gratitude goes to you, Paul. Without this video, my rav would likely be sitting in a junk yard somewhere.
Thanks for watching, and congratulations on fixing your RAV4! The cylinder head is not an easy job.
man thanks to you i am able to fix my own rav4 98, i move to mexico and i was able to buy this car but in a very bad shape! so thanks to you now the mechanics can no longer bullshit me, so keep it going!!!
Thanks for watching, and good luck with your RAV4!
WOW !!! I just bought a project 1999 Rav 4 and although I know cars (I drive only Toyotas) and work at a parts store and have been working on cars for 60 years (I'll be 77 in three days)
THIS VIDEO BLEW ME AWAY !!
You Tubers often know the subject but not the 'videography'. Sound, script, lighting, editing, etc. This one even visually identified all the parts AND THERE ARE MANY.
I may have a head gasket issue beginning and also a EVAP pending code so to have all these parts identified is a Godsend. THANK YOU !! SUB
Thanks for watching! I'm glad the video was useful.
@@LabCoatPaul "useful" is not a big enough word.
I am wondering if the 2.0 is an "interference" motor.
Because I have NO records so I don't know how the timing belt is doing ...
I'm about to replace my head gasket on a 99 RAV4, 2.0 and because of your video I don't need any other information..you out did yourself sir.. bravo
Thanks and good luck fixing your RAV4!
The Rav4 series lives!!!! Awesome stuff as always, get me motivated to replace the radiator on mine. The videos are always appreciated.
I don't own a RAV4....never even drove one......But if I did I'd be watching your vids to make sure I could maintain and repair it properly. Your editing and flow are outstanding. thanks for taking the time to educate us all.
I've done a ton of head gaskets. I know what's involved in such a job....but you made it look so orderly and easy. And for a 1997 that motor is "clean". It's been maintained well.
Thanks for watching! The video was more work than the engine repair. The previous owner did plenty of oil changes, but not much other maintenance.
How can I locate the obd2 port on toyota rav4 1998/ 97
My head gasket just went out for the second time on my 1998 rav4, so we are swapping my motor and I started out with what my dad suggested for removing stuff, but we got stumped by the wiring. I am so glad you made this video because that is the clearest explanation of how to remove that I have yet to find. Appreciate your video!
I got my own first gen rav4 and enjoy watching these videos! I'm glad you're still making content on your rav4.
Paul: your videos inspire me to keep my 1999 RAV4 manual with allwheel drive operating. It is my first car and i have owned it for 22 years. If i have to replace the head gasket, i will be following your video guide. Enjoyed watching the video. Thank you for putting it together.
I own a 2000 RAV4 with 203,000 miles on it and plan on restoring it like yours! Thank you for these videos it makes working on this thing a lot less nerve racking when I have a great step by step guide. Appreciate your hard work!
OMG! I am so I glad you came back to the Rav! Long live Paul! Love your videos!
Thanks! My RAV4 still has many problems left, so I'll keep working on it. :)
Rav4 Gang!!!
Bro you are the RAV4 JESUS! My friend and I have learned a lot from your videos when we’re workin on his RAV4, keep it up, you’re very entertaining to listen to 😊
Thanks for your comprehensive post. I was able to confirm the type of engine head on my1997 Rav4. Excellent demonstration and pictures make following your instructions easy.
I'm glad it was helpful! Good luck with your repair!
Remove the plug in the strut Tower and use the sight hole to align the top timing marks at the same time you can see the crank alignment.
I just saw a cheap Rav4 ,that the seller mentions that it needs a new head gasket.. After watching your incredibly detailed video, he can keep his Rav4..Thanks.
Hahaha, yes it's way too much work. Thanks for watching!
Thanks labcoat paul. I just removed the head from my 97 RAV4. Your video step by step is saving me a bundle. I’m here trying to donate but can’t find the drawer.
Excellent production sir. Your knowledge of the product is amazing. Your memory is outstanding. I could/would not attempt this job. It would stay apart forever. I would have to bite the bullet and hire a true professional such as yourself to complete the job. Watching the video verifies the fact that honest, professionally educated automotive specialists are the only way to get the job done right the first time. Wish there were more like you out there. Unfortunately, there are many "mechanics" as they may call themselves who do not possess the level of expertise you do, and would ultimately perform a poor job, resulting in headaches and frustration. I like to watch automotive videos such as this. It enforces ones appreciation of commitment to high quality , honest automotive repair.
You are a beautiful man you single handily are saving me and my rav 4 I appreciate everything you do and please keep doing vids on the rav
Hope Toyota and your Autozone will sponsor your DIY videos . You also endorse that Rav4 so well. Now Rav4 first gen owners will have no second thoughts of giving it up. 🤘
Thank you! I followed the whole thing and did my first head gasket replacement on a 2000 Rav 4. Some small differences but it was still a great walk through.
Thanks for taking on this project and making this sweet video with all parts, part numbers, tools and suppliers listed. AAA+++ video editing.
Yes, this is possibly the greatest video on UA-cam. Yes, I'm extremely disappointed you didn't wear a lab coat to the junkyard.
Thanks! I though about just wearing the lab coat everywhere, but it's for wearing in the lab. Sometimes I see surgeons walking around in green clothing in public and it doesn't make sense. Are you going to operate later with street dirt all over your clothes? I decided to wear the lab coat only in the garage. Also I won't get people staring at me in public.
This is the best mechanical video I have seen
I have a 1st gen Rav4 and a Chinese scooter. This channel has been amazingly helpful.
The CA emissions part @25:30 helped me since I am putting a Federal emissions engine in my CA emissions RAV4.
Very well explained on the TOYOTA Rave4. you are more than a professional. The best video on how to head gasket replacement out there for the RAV4. These car can for a long long time. I got a 1998 model with 350000 thousand miles in it and still starts every time when it’s below -25. I trust this more then my 2015 Highlander. You can’t go wrong Toyota period. Bless and you a great day everyday.
Excellent video, very well detailed on the work, great tips and clarifying, makes me feel all pumped up to work on my '97 and do to it much more, Thank you Paul !!!
I love this series. I love how you color coded those parts. Hello from New Zealand
Just used this to get my 2000 rav4 up and going! Fellow Utahan, Thank you!
Yes! its back. these videos are so helpful to me :)
Thank you for all your hard work
Oh my gosh, this video is so in-depth, thank you so much! 🙇🏽
Paul, hey this is Ricky again.. you answered one of my questions and I appreciate it, but you didn't answer my second question but after doing the work I saw that it was a silly question and it didn't make much sense, so forgive me for that.. installation of the cams is next head gaskets been replaced all is well moving forward little bit at a time thanks again for sharing what you know
15:00 Toyota Split-Gear Exhaust camshaft drive. This is spring-loaded to eliminate backlash and optimize timing accuracy.
Paul, you are a living legend.
Thanks! I hope the RAV4 videos are useful for you.
This guy is a master, thanks for this
Awesome video Paul first gen owners owe you a lot of gratitude! now if my baby acts up and decides to blow a head gasket I got a great reference! I'm stoked you decided to just do the head replacement but still deep down inside wish I got to see someone do the 3sGTE swap, still awesome video brother thanks for all the awesome first gen Rav4 content!
Fantastic video and well done, you make it look easier than it actually is but you did a great job on the rav and the video production....Thumbs up!
It Must have took a long time to assemble this well made video. Thanks for doing this. I learn a lot! 🙏
10/10 tutorial video. Nothing else to say. Incredible work.
I've finished this vlog! You're amazing Paul.
Yayyyy RAV4 is back!
This is the best mechanical video i have seen ever. This is so nice and neat.
Paul, I appreciate the time, effort and dedication gone into the actual job and the video presentation. I was planning on doing this job myself but now I'm leaning towards just paying a shop to do it or if I end up doing it, I feel like I will be better off just pulling the engine engine out and working on it mounted on a stand.
Excellent and thorough. Well done!! 🤠👍
As always, amazing video 👍
Dude one of the best videos ever
This is amazing work!
Trully great production quality
Another awesome video! Great job!
Me salvaste la vida! Me encantan tus videos
I enjoy this video from start to finish I saw it complete it looks like you love what you do
Exelente labor ...muchas felicidades 🎉
excellent video, very well explained I have a rav5 97 and it is a very good car more for the roads of guatemala greetings .. and congratulations Paul.
Thank you for making video! Much appreciated 😊
you did a very good job, thanks
Love the colours… great job.
Thanks! The colors are a bit goofy but great for videos.
This is a great video, well done. The labelling and FSM screen shots are very helpful. My only two critiques are 1) instead of using a tap to clean the head bolt threads, I prefer to make a chaser tool by cutting two large grooves down the length of one of the old head bolts with a dremel. This is less aggressive than a tap, less likely to damage the threads, and the perfect length for the hole. Those threads take a lot of pressure, so I think it's good to leave as much thread material in place as possible. My second critique is that you can rent those harmonic balancer pullers for free from the parts stores. Otherwise, excellent work!
So helpful and professional
Split cam gear is to eliminate backlash between the two gears. Great video.
I figured it was something like that. Thanks for the info!
Thaks this video help me a lot today, My rav4 is 1995 and Has a different wiring harness. Nice video
Nice! Soon you need to buy a gen 2 and fix that for us aswell 😁
Nice job very professional.
I saw the video link on facebook, where I also commented (Lele Lex Gimondo) just to annoying you a lil bit LOL
Mate, let me tell you: Thanks!!!!! There are so many details of the job here, that if I was Mr. Toyoda I would pay you, to make maintenance videos of Toyota's. Great video, super detailed and very easy to follow.
Ps: great timing 27hours. I was waiting the whole video to hear that, but, I was gonna say 50 or something there.
Excellent. Good job!
Great video... 👍
Great video mate respect
哦 这简直是一个巨大工程,很有趣!
Awesome job!!
Really good. You're the man.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you very much, the video helped me a lot
Thanks For Your Help Bossy💯👈🙌🙏
Excelente video,saludos desde España
wow, excellent work
Excellent video -- much thanks for this!
You're welcome! Thank you for helping me. I watched your timing belt video before I made this video. I had no idea about the timing mark on the crank pulley. The timing belt procedure in the Toyota service manual is pretty awful. Without your video, I would have been very confused.
@@LabCoatPaul Wow, that's so cool -- I'm so glad the timing belt video helped! Yes, someone else taught me about that tiny little timing mark which is so hard to see, so that's why I put it in the video and it's great that you show it too, so that people can know. And I agree that the FSM leaves a lot wishing, haha. Your video here is just 100% top-notch work, and is a huge contribution to the video library that will help us keep these gen-1's on the road! : ) Thanks again, sincerely -- I *know* how much work goes into a video like this! And BIG thumbs up on your outstanding work and video!
Great editing and very informative.
Not that it matters in this case but you measured the belt tension spring outer length instead of the inner length as the diagram shown prior.
The spring loaded cam split gear is a clever design to take up the back-lash between gears.
Yes, the diagram says to measure inside the spring, but it was closer to the spec on the outside. Either my calipers are bad, or the diagram is wrong.
@@LabCoatPaul You’re well within spec and most people don’t check that stuff anyway.
I was only being smart and proving that I was paying attention ;)
Love the jump phase in edit 🤣
Thanks! I wish I could get places like that instead of driving.
Awesome job and video thx
these rav4s are so cute
Epic video thanks you
Your Rav4 is the best in the world
Thank you! It looks pretty good in the videos, but there are a few RAV4's out there with no rust and low mileage that are much better than mine. My RAV4 still has a long way to go before it's in perfect condition.
Cuanto profesionalismo felicitaciones
Nice work. But you can also use the plug wire to reach down and grip the spark plugs to remove it after you slackened it.
I just had this one last week. It was a pain
Wowww this is a very large work, and very good video, the best thing you did you are saying every single name of the PARTS and yes keep up the good work, Again TO do the head gasket on the engine and that is a very large work to do in a car, Again keep up the good work.
Thanks! I'm glad you liked it!
Can't wait for the 3SGTE swap sir.
I used to have a 1998 RAV4 in the late 2005s
Cool Paul😉👍🏻
God job
Where were you in 2019 when I done this job?? lol Absolutely awesome job.
thank you!!
nice job on the video, could not stop watching it. I got a 1991 camry with bad oil consumption problem....besides the fact that front oil seal and main seal leak, i think I got valve stem gasket leaks. Got me motivated to work on it now. 150K and runs like a pig, haha.
Before you start, do a compression test. If your piston rings are good, changing the cylinder head will fix a lot of problems. If the compression is bad, replace the whole engine, or the car.
@@LabCoatPaul good idea, I changed plugs but did not do a compression test. Need to figure out how to shut off the fuel pump first, so it won't get flooded. I really like these engines, so easy to work on
I feel so jealous when I see this video. I wish my Rav4 can go through this process.
You can fix anything you want with enough time and money.
A Paul Shpakov video my night is made :)
Thanks for watching! This one took forever to make. It will be HD here soon once it's done processing.
@@LabCoatPaul hey Paul, I don't think 3sfe were known for headgasket leaks, how much mileage is on it? Was it driven under normal driving conditions, light off road use?
Oh and if so, any chance of uploading videos of those light off road use?
@@LabCoatPaul sounds good. And thanks again for the quality content. Your videos came well timed, they gave me confidence to do things like install my own OME kit, replace my valve cover gasket, and now my head gasket, though I hope it never comes to that :P Overall your videos have made me become more knowledgeable overall about my 1999 rav4, which is also a 5 speed with center diff lock. Cheers from California.
@@DonnieDarko1 My RAV4 has 158,000 miles and it's 23 years old, so all the gaskets are pretty weak, plus I installed a radiator cap that didn't work and the coolant pressure got super high, causing the head gasket to blow. (it's in the middle of the video).
Unfortunately, my RAV4 has been too much of a POS to really drive it anywhere. Now that the engine works properly, I plan on adding a skid plate, then doing some off road driving.
@@NickAlexander_is_Awesome That's awesome! I'm glad the videos are useful for you.
