This is the most beautiful version of this song I've ever heard. My Irish grandparents and mother were obsessed with Riverdance and Lord of the Dance. I fondly remember taking them to Irish music festivals. This music will always mean a lot to me. Love the way it switches from English to Irish (Gaelic?) This woman has the voice of an angel.

This song brings back so many memories. As a child, I was obsessed with Lord of the Dance, and I remember wandering around the house driving everyone crazy by attempting to sing this song. Still have no idea what the lyrics are.

I have a similar story- only mine involved the two fiddling women on “strings of fire”, Mairead Nesbitt and Cora Smyth (her brother Sean Smyth is a member of Lúnasa). I was 14 at the time, although LOTD was created when I was only 9 I think. After seeing those women play, and then later in ‘Dueling Violins’ on Feet of Flames, my obsession with traditional Irish music began. That evolved into Scottish tunes, Cape Breton, Norwegian and more. I’m 33 now and been fiddling ever since. Even studied at University of Limerick, Ireland. Thanks to LOTD!!

One translation of the Irish chorus is:
    Go, go, go my love
    Go quietly and peacefully
Go to the door and flee with me
And may you go safely my dear.

Dia duit. You imply that everyone on the internet must be able to perfectly understand spoken or sung english. The most noticable part, the chorus, is sung in gaeilge, which is very far from english, and actually quite hard to understand for people not speaking the language. I dare to claim it's impossible to understand anything, if you're not speaking gaeilge.
I fear that you are the dumb specimen here, kind sir/lady. Lá maith agat, mo cara.

I wish I were on yonder hill',

    (Chorus♧)
I'll sell my lock, I'll sell my reel,
I'll sell my only spinning wheel:
and buy my love a sword of steel

    I wish, I wish, I wish - in vain:
    I wish I had my heart again;
and vainly think: I'd not complain

***** With respect, you are wrong. It's about a time when Irish men had to choose to serve in the English army or be exiled to France. It left their women with choices such as prostituting to feed their kids. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Si%C3%BAil_A_R%C3%BAn

***** Still don't get it? (DD IQ's). The translated lyrics:
I wish I was on yonder hill
'Tis there I'd sit and cry my fill
Until every tear would turn a mill
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
And may you go safely, my darling

[She's upset her husband is gone.]
      Chorus (after each verse):
      Siúil, siúil, siúil a rún
      Go, go, go, my love
Siúil go sochair agus siúil go ciúin
      Go quietly and go peacefully
Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
Go to the door and fly with me
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
And may you go safely, my darling

I'll sell my rock, I'll sell my reel
I'll sell my only spinning wheel
To buy my love a sword of steel
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
And may you go safely, my darling

[She will do anything to make sure he is safe including selling the implements in which she supports the family.]
I'll dye my petticoats, I'll dye them red
And 'round the world I'll beg my bread
Until my parents shall wish me dead
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
And may you go safely, my darling

[She will turn to prostitution to feed her kids in his absence.]
I wish, I wish, I wish in vain
I wish I had my heart again
And vainly think I'd not complain
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
And may you go safely, my darling

[She regrets their arguments and if she could do it again, she'd never fight with him.]
But now my love has gone to France
To try his fortune to advance
If he e'er comes back, 'tis but a chance
Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
[He chose the exile to France in order to make money to send back to her instead of possibly dying and not being able to support her or his kids at all.]
