    The Czech band 'Asonance' has performed their own version of the song, under the name 'Kolovrátek' ('Spinning Wheel'). (The Czech version is not a translation of the original, but significantly expands on the theme. It tells of a woman waiting for her beloved, who has gone to war; as often happens in this kind of songs, she is eventually told that he had been killed in a battle.)

      Yes but you’re still incorrect.
      The word “Gaelic” means “pertaining to the Gaels”. Who are the Gaels? They are the first group of hunters-gatherers who arrived in Ireland during the Stone Age. The Gaels later moved to Scottish Highlands and established a kingdom there (Dál Riata) from 4th century to 9th century. The Scottish Gaelic language was then developed.
      The word “Gaelic” in the English language refers to the Gaelic / Goidelic group of Insular Celtic languages that are Irish, Scottish Gaelic, and Manx. The other group (Brythonic) include Welsh, Breton, and Cornish.
      Therefore, it’s safe to say that Irish is a Gaelic language BUT Gaelic / Goidelic is not a language because it refers to a group of Celtic languages.
      Fun / Sad Fact: only Insular Celtic languages are still here. The Continental Celtic languages went extinct a long time ago.

      @@ThePerksdeLeSarcasmeSiorai If I recall correctly, it's called Gaeilge, while the Scottish dialect of the language is Gallic.
      Also, yes, most of Irish "Gaelic" is gone now, there's little to no written works on the language, and almost no one outside of the academic community or Irish natives actually speak it. Part of what happened after the English conquered them roughly 800 years ago, if my memory is correct.

      “It’s called Gaeilge”
      => Yes but the Irish people themselves still call it “the Irish language”. They don’t say Gaelic even though “Irish Gaelic” is a correct term in English.
      The Irish government is trying its best to preserve the language by teaching it in school, recognizing it as an official language, and officially promoting the language to be more widely used by job opportunities but so far, the result is mixed.

      Johnig There is no Irish version because this is a traditional Irish song sung across Ireland. The version you listened to is a German cover.

    • @thewiccalady7386
      @thewiccalady7386 7 років тому

      well then there is an Irish version because this an Irish song so therefor and Irish version of the song as there is also a German version. Doesn't matter if its a cover or traditional song its still a version in Irish or German.

    • @ThePerksdeLeSarcasmeSiorai
      @ThePerksdeLeSarcasmeSiorai 7 років тому

      CrazySweetGirl Well. My point is that it's ridiculous to call it an "Irish version" of the traditional Irish song. You can only use the word "version" for international covers sung in a different language (not the original language) and in your case, German. Or else, it is similar to how you say "French version of La Vie en Rose", "Scottish version of Auld Lang Syne", or "Italian version of Mambo Italiano", or "English version of Let It Go from Frozen", etc. I guess that English is definitely not your first language so I don't want to sound like a jerk but it just sounds somewhat wrong in the English context. 😂
      And yes, they're still traditional and supposed to sound the same.

    Translation for anyone who wants it:
    Come, my love
    Come, come, come, O love,
    Quickly come to me, softly move;
    Come to the door, and away we'll flee
    And safe for aye may my darling be!
    I wish I was on yonder hill
    'Tis there I'd sit and cry my fill,
    And every tear would turn a mill
    I'll sell my rod, I'll sell my reel
    I'll sell my only spinning wheel
    To buy my love a sword of steel
    Come, come, come, O love,
    Quickly come to me, softly move;
    Come to the door, and away we'll flee
    And safe for aye may my darling be!
    I'll dye my petticoats, I'll dye them red
    And 'round the world I'll beg my bread
    Until my parents shall wish me dead
    Come, come, come, O love,
    Quickly come to me, softly move;
    Come to the door, and away we'll flee
    And safe for aye may my darling be!
    Come, come, come, O love,
    Quickly come to me, softly move;
    Come to the door, and away we'll flee
    Come, come, come, O love,
    Quickly come to me, softly move;
    Come to the door, and away we'll flee
    And safe for aye may my darling be!

      Siúil, siúil, siúil a rúin
      Siúil go sochair agus siúil go ciúin
      Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
      [Chorus:]
      Siúil, siúil, siúil a rúin
      Siúil go sochair agus siúil go ciúin
      Siúil go doras agus éalaigh liom
      Is go dté tú mo mhúirnín slán
      I wish I was on yonder hill
      'Tis there I'd sit and cry my fill
      Until every tear would turn a mill
      I'll sell my rod, I'll sell my reel
      I'll sell my only spinning wheel
      To buy my love a sword of steel
      [Chorus]
      I'll dye my petticoats, I'll dye them red
      And 'round the world I'll beg my bread
      Until my parents shall wish me dead
      [Chorus three times]

    This sounds like Wilde Rose by Faun! Maybe a tanslation?

    My dearly beloved daughter, the way in which I show Myself to God’s children
    on this Earth is through only one source and that is the Holy Spirit.
    I cannot make Myself known to them through any other way.
    Your Jesus

    Is it a crime to say that, even when this version is amazing, I prefer the first one (sang by Orla Fallon)?

    This is super interesting. I hear some parallels in the lyrics of James Taylor's "Johnny Has Gone for a Soldier" (for reference: ua-cam.com/video/GgBIk7Ibmt0/v-deo.html)
    I wonder who borrowed from whom (I have a feeling James Taylor did the borrowing)

    I've been learning how to read Irish. And because I want to stick to the rules until I understand when and how to break them according to dialect, I pronounce mhuirnin as wuirnin rather than vuirnin.
