      Thx! Yep, I really enjoy the smaller bikes. I have about equal numbers of small and large bikes in the stable right now. The small ones are two Honda PCX150's (2015 & 2016), a 2007 Yamaha C3 scooter, a 1978 Honda CB125S, a 1970 Honda CL175 Scrambler, and a 2008 Yamaha XT250. If I don't need to go anywhere fast, then I always choose the smaller bikes for the simplicity and efficiency. It's just fun to go slower and enjoy the scenery sometimes! 😉👍 --QM

    I Love your videos of the super cub. I want to buy one but no place in southwest Florida has one to look at. Wrote to Honda Corporate and no response to date. Very frustrating, Honda really needs more presence in our area. There is one place, but they have nothing but negative reviews, so don’t want to order from them. Keep up the videos and I will keep trying.

      Thx for the feedback! I checked with my dealer in Houston, and they said that they can't find any Super Cubs in our region... all sold out. I'm sure that there are some dealers in the US that still have some, or maybe some additional stock sitting in the distribution warehouses, so it might take some searching to locate one. Another viewer/commenter mentioned that their local dealer quoted them over $7000 for a Cub, so they might be getting scarce and the dealers are playing the price-gouging game. The 2020 models should be available soon, so I would get on the next waiting list before I paid double the MSRP! Good luck on your quest! 👍 --QM

    I’ve been watching your videos and am really interested in picking up a new 2020 Cub. It would be perfect for my commute. How many miles do you have in yours and would you recommend one after owning one for over a year? Thanks and really enjoy your content. 👍🏼

      Thx for the feedback (again)! I currently have about 2500 miles on my Cub and slowly counting for now. I'll be adding several thousand miles to the clock in the next few months leading up to the big trip in July for the 2020 Scooter Cannonball Run... that will be an 8000-mile trip around the USA for my son and me on Super Cubs!
      So, to answer your second question: YES, I would definitely recommend a Super Cub to anyone that likes to ride at a leisurely pace. As long as you have reasonable expectations for the Cub, then you shouldn't be disappointed. My only "complaint" about it is the complete lack of storage, but you can remedy that by adding a rear rack or wearing a backpack. If you're in the Houston area, then you can drop me an email at quasimotard@gmail.com and I'll be happy to meet you somewhere so you can take a look at the bike. Cheers! 👍 --QM

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  5 років тому

      I prefer the RAM X-Grip, and you can see that on the Super Cub in the beginning of this video: ua-cam.com/video/FmxVoeWwvyQ/v-deo.html . That particular mount is comprised of 3 different parts:
      RAM mirror mount adapter RAM-B-272U ($12.49): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0012TRIY4
      RAM short double-socket arm ($9.49): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005KWPJ04 (be sure it's the one with the flat twist knob, the round knob doesn't work well)
      RAM X-Grip ($26.49): www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0055PH0XA
      You can probably find the X-Grip as a kit, but the mounting arm may be too long, and the mounting base will certainly be wrong (not the mirror mount). Let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to help! --QM

    QM whats your thoughts on the tires? I have quite a few fire roads that are dirt and gravel near me and I find the stock tires a little squirrelly, I ordered a set of small dual sport tires and although I have to install a tube I am going to give them a try, they also are a little wider

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  5 років тому

      I thought about that for the 2020 Scooter Cannonball Run. There were several portions of the 2018 race that went through dirt and gravel, so I considered shopping for some 80/20 enduro tires for that event. We can probably squeeze some slightly wider tires in there (maybe about +10mm), but it will be tight. Let us know how your tire swap works out, and I might do the same. 👍 --QM

      I need to ride a few more miles behind it before I can make an informed decision. I will try wait for the Givi screen to arrive and then I will have some points for comparison. My initial impression is that it does break up the air pressure across my torso a little bit, but it doesn't deflect the air stream even as high as my shoulders. That's good and bad... if it pushed the air right to chin level, then it might be a nuisance with buffeting. One bonus so far is that I can now toss my gloves onto the meter cover, and they don't slide down the front of the bike! 👍😉 --QM

      @@QuasiMotard Thanks for the reply. Seems that it's more cosmetic than practical which is what I guessed, having ridden scooters with similar miniscreens before. Ideally I'd like a screen similar to that on big adventure or touring bikes (I also have a Triumph Tiger 800 and previously a BMW 1200 GS) that deflect most of the wind over your head. The downside is that on a such a small bike as the Cub, it would probably look hideous.
      Look forward to seeing your review of the Givi screen, hope they include all the parts!

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  5 років тому +1

      @@perhaps6112 Agreed. Putting a large screen on the Cub won't look quite right, and it might significantly slow it down or reduce efficiency. It would be akin to pushing a barn door in front of you... the Cub is already limited on power, so a really large screen would probably be a boat anchor. --QM

    They used to have the ability to carry a passenger.
    I really love these bikes. I’ve ridden them all over Asia.
    I wish they offered the modern sporty styling with light weight spoked wheels just like the models they sell overseas that cost half as much. They call it the Honda Wave. All over the world these bikes are very durable seriously economical modes of transportation.
    I’d like to own one of these. I just wish it looked normal and could accommodate a passenger.
    Honda is missing out on sales.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  Рік тому

      Our US DOT regulations don't allow passenger footpegs to be mounted on a movable portion of the motorcycle's suspension; the footpegs must be mounted to a fixed portion of the frame. So, that's why all of the US-spec Super Cubs don't include passenger accommodations, and the footpeg mounts in the swingarm are epoxied shut.
      I think it would be fantastic if Honda would import more of their small-displacement motorcycles and scooters to the US market. Unfortunately, sales for smaller motorcycles have been very poor here since the 1980s, so Honda (and most of the other manufacturers) are reluctant to import them to the States due to slow sales.
      Honda tried to rekindle the small scooter market in the mid-2000s with the Elite 110 (NHX110) and the Elite 150 (SH150i) that were sourced from the Asian and European markets, but the sales were horrible and Honda had trouble selling them for nearly a decade. They tried again with the mid-sized Forza 300, but it fell flat as well. Honda was still trying to sell old stock 2012-2013 Forza 300's and 2011-2012 SilverWing 600's for over 8 years! The demand just isn't there in the US market, so I guess numbers don't lie. It's a shame, because I'd buy a dozen more small-displacement scooters and motorcycles if they'd sell them here! 😉👍 --QM

    • @perrosdemaiz
      @perrosdemaiz Рік тому +1

      @@QuasiMotard The Wave has pegs that hang frame the frame.
      The small bikes you mentioned are of the “twist and go” scooter style bikes. Not the same. So I don’t see the poor sales stats as perfectly reflective.
      I think if they were offered at a price that was similar to what they sell for abroad say $2000 US, they would sell plenty.
      Somehow they can justify selling these at that price or lower elsewhere.
      I obviously don’t know all the facts surrounding the reasons they’re not offered, but I think with the right price and the right marketing the wave would be successful.
      I get it though. I’m sure these are just not expensive enough and will never achieve the volume required to make it worth their time.
      I wish there were some way to sneak one into the country. It would perfect for me and offer me all the fun of riding and tinkering. It’s frustrating.
      Anyway, thanks for your thoughtful response.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  Рік тому +1

      Agreed. The few scooters that I mentioned are just indicicative of typical sales volumes and US-market reception toward smaller road-legal bikes. I wish that we could get a bunch of the 125-200cc motorcycles from the Asian and European markets! They already comply with EURO4 and EURO5 emissions regs, which are more stringent than US EPA standards, so it should be a slam dunk to import them to the USA. The Honda Wave, CB125F, CB150, and several others would be fantastic to have here in the States.
      Honda just announced the "new" XR150L for the US market, so maybe they are testing the waters again to see how the US riders feel toward small-ish motorcycles again. However, this probably won't be perceived as a "real" Honda because it's built in China, it's a similar cross-market import like the Navi that's built in India. I'm just surprised that Honda is able to sneak these carbureted bikes into the USA with all of the ever-tightening emissions requirements. Hell, the Navi doesn't even have a catalytic converter! Adding fuel injection to these would probably be cost prohibitive, but it would certainly make them better machines.
      Mini-motos like the Grom have sold like hotcakes here for nearly a decade now, but they still aren't considered to be "real" transportation by most US consumers. Maybe Honda should rethink their cross-market and surplus intentory imports to the USA. If they're rolling stuff up from Mexico, then bring us some of the modern fuel-injected goodies like the Zoomer-X 110, Wave 110i, CB125F, CB150R, CB150X, XR190, or any of the other goodies that we can't have ( www.honda.mx/motos ). 😉👍 --QM

    Not that by now you care but in case you are curious. Italy doesn't have an incredible export economy (or really an incredible economy at all) where as Japan does. Japan also probably shipped that item by sea and living in Texas it probably didn't have to go very far after that. Italy's export game is more focused on shipping things to the rest of the EU and likely lacks a whole lot of means for global shipping. So I would imagine they shipped it by land to somewhere like the Netherlands or France to get it off the continent.
    (joke) they are also Italians. Trusting us Italians to do anything in a timely manner is like trusting a cat not to knock something off the side of a table.

    Hey QuasiMotard. You do great videos on the Super Cub! The help a lot when screwing on her. I got my red one just last month. But hopefully you can help me out to choose a windscreen. Which one is regarding your experience the best concerning top speed and wind resistance on the chest/helmet? I wanna be more comfortable at higher speed (and less insects on the jacket ;-) ), but don't wanna loose to much speed because of a big screen.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  4 роки тому

      I have only tried two screens on the Cub so far, so I don't have any magic recipe yet. However, I can definitely recommend AGAINST the Givi screen because of the fitment and quality control issues. I've heard from other owners that the Puig screens work well (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/puig-urban-windscreen-honda-super-cub-c125-2019-2020) or (www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/puig-tx-windscreen-honda-super-cub-2018-2019).
      The tricky part for finding a good windscreen on the Cub is the close seating position to the mounting area (e.g. your helmet is closer to the front of the bike than normal). With such close proximity, the height of the screen becomes more important because of the air buffeting/turbulence at your helmet... there isn't much dead space behind the screen to "soften" the turbulent air spillover.
      The Asahi Short Visor works well for me because the air terminus is around the base of my chest, which leaves my shoulders and helmet in clear air (less turbulence). The Givi terminated just below my shoulders, so the dirty airflow was directed right at the base of my helmet/neck area... it was far too noisy in the helmet. I'm 5'7" (~170cm) without my helmet, so your results may vary depending on your height and seating position. Good luck with your shopping! 👍 --QM

      @@QuasiMotard Meanwhile i tested the Puig Urban. And it was a total mess. One of the holes for the mirrors was to narrow. So i had to drill it up by myself. Also i had to improve the plastic parts to fix the arms so that they were stable and not movable by hand. But beside that it was simply not possible to fix the screen itself in a way, that it was resistant against the headwinds. Reaching about 50 mph (80 km/h) the screen was bended nealy horizontal. Because the screws are made of metal and the other parts of plastic, it was not possible so tighten them more. There were already damages on the parts so that i had to order spare parts. May be i'll test the Givi or give one of the Asahi screens a chance. And hoping for a Retro-Cub with 150 ccm and 2 or 3 more horse powers ;-)

    Pronounced “a-SAH-hee”. Asahi is also the brand of a good beer in Japan.
    I found a windshield valuable on rides of, say, over a half hour. Hanging on against the slipstream is fatiguing. Fatigue reduces our ability to detect imminent problems approaching, slows down our thinking, and also our physical reactions. I’ve also been hit in the Adam’s apple by large bugs at 50mph. Similar to a karate chop. A windshield of correct height would have prevented that.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  5 років тому

      Cheers, it's good to hear from you again! This Asahi windscreen seems to break up the airflow past my torso, but it's more of a cosmetic/aesthetic accessory than a functional one. I have 250-300 miles behind it now and I can say that it helps reduce the wind pressure on my chest above 45 mph, and my helmet is in clear air (no buffeting from the screen's spill-over... so that's a good thing. I don't believe that this screen is available in a clear version, but they do have a taller "barn door" screen here: japan.webike.net/products/23952400.html . It looks like it might be about the same size as the Givi/Kappa 1168A, but with a different profile. I still haven't received my Givi kit, so that's apparently a dry hole for me until Givi USA decides to distribute them here. --QM

Couldn't deal with it but it was a test as I say soooooo. I wondering if a shorter one with more curve in it will give me the results I'm looking for. Watched your videos but not sure if it is possible to get the results I'm looking for. Maybe a happy medium?

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  Рік тому

      Howdy, Joe! There aren't many good windscreens available for the Cub. The Puig Traffic might be a good fit, but it would need an additonal lip spoiler on the top to give a bit more coverage and to steer the turbulence away from your helmet. I've heard that the Puig's mounts are flimsy and tend to break, so adding more stress and torque on those mounts might make matters worse.
      I tried the Givi screen for the Cub, and that was a dismal failure. That screen still might work if I would have cut it down by about 3-4" and then added a laminar lip to the top... dunno. I gave it away, so I can't test that theory now.
      This Asahi Short Visor works very well for breaking up wind pressure across my torso, but my shoulders and helmet are in the clear. That's both good and bad. My top speeds increased several MPH with this windscreen, especially when I tuck in and get my helmet inline with the curve of the screen... I can pick up 7-10 MPH in some cases. The downside is that it doesn't offer any protection against bugs, rain, or wind when I'm in a normal riding position.
      I traveled 10K+ highway miles around the USA behind that screen during the 2021 Scooter Cannonball Run, and it worked exceptionally well. In retrospect, I probably should have added a lip spoiler to the top of it for just a bit more wind management; however, that still wouldn't make the little Asahi a good touring screen. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

      Thx for that! I should have gone to Google Translate before making the video, but I was too eager to put the screen on the bike! The translation of "Asahi" is "morning sun"... learn something new every day! 👍 --QM

      @@QuasiMotard Konnichiwa QM-san. I live in a suburb of Boston and am in the process of closing on a 2019 SC125!!! I thoroughly enjoy your videos. Very informative and humorous!! They were/are a major influence on my decision to buy a Cub. I started on Honda Enduros, moved to Harleys, then in 2002 I bought a Ducati ST4s, and traded it last year for a new Ducati Monster 797.
      Like you, I will use the Cub for commutes, short trips, and close-by camping.
      I worked for 5 years for Gulf Oil Corporation R&D and traveled extensively to Houston and the Gulf Coast where I met many "good ol' boys" like yourself.
      Then a 30 year career with Digital Equipment Corp during which, I was an expat in Tokyo for three years (1989-1992) where I saw many Cubs and other commuter bikes, and learned to speak Nihongo=Japanese.
      The correct pronunciation of Asahi is "Uuh-suh-hee".
      In Japanese, the vowels take only one sound: 'a' is like the 'a' in "a-bout" or the 'u' in "under" or "supper".
      The 'i' is always like a long 'ee' as in "evil", "he" or "eat").
      Asahi is also one of the leading beers in Japan along with Kirin and Sapporo.
      If you ever get to the New England area, I'll have a Cub or Monster for you to ride. I also have lots of camping gear. Sayonara, Bob

      @@bobalessio9865 Thanks for the feedback and the phonetics for the word "Asahi"! I knew that I was butchering that pronunciation. I am multi-lingual, but Japanese isn't one of my languages. 🤣 My son and I will be riding up through your area in late June for the Scooter Cannonball Run, which starts in Bar Harbor, Maine on July 6, 2020 ( scootercannonballrun.com/ ). We will be riding a pair of Super Cub 125's up from the Houston, TX area to the start of the race in Bar Harbor, then all the way across the country for the Cannonball Run that ends in Eureka, CA on July 15th. After that, we'll ride back to Houston, TX. It's going to be a butt-numbing 9000-mile trip around the country. If we get an early enough start out of Houston, then we'll plan to take about 4-5 days (~550 miles/day) to ride up to Maine. Hopefully, we will have enough time to visit folks and find interesting camping spots along the way. Cheers! 👍 --QM
