  • 2023 SuperCub Pearl Gray. Battery and trickle charger install. It is not as easy as other motorcycles that I've worked on. Space is tight and the plastic cover for the battery makes it difficult to screw on anything on the terminals

    A job well done. I must admit that when I did mine (which has worked out very well) I cut away the “shrouds” on the battery cover that are positioned over and forward of the battery terminals, as I found these were making an already fiddly job a nightmare. Opening up the aperture made the connection easier and I did not need to cut away any part of the connection rings. I can’t see how cutting away those shrouds will adversely affect anything, since the battery and terminals are well tucked away. Honda could surely have made battery access a who,e lot easier than they have. Thanks for the video, which I watched with admiration, having cursed my way through the job a few months ago!

      This was harder than usual for sure. Filming it was a pain as well. I agree the plastic cover seems over kill since the positive cable is covered. The fear of dropping your bolts into the abyss was also a factor.

    They are very easy to bump start if you've got a flat battery. Just select 3rd gear, turn the ignition on and walk the bike until it starts.
    Unfortunately, I don't think this would work if the battery is completely dead as the fuel pump wouldn't work. However, I've started my cub if it's been left for a long time using this method if the battery is unable to turn the engine over. Then a good run will charge the battery so that it will start up the next time I use it.
    I do need to change the battery though as it doesn't hold a charge as long as it used to, so will be following your video when I come to do this. What a Faff. I'll wait for a warm dry day before doing it.

      Just don’t make the mistake I did once doing this, and forget to put the rotary ignition switch into the normal ‘start’ mode 🤦‍♂️

    Have you got a PhD in electrical engineering and the patience of a saint? What a palaver. I have owned many Hondas, and with most you just unlock the seat, lift it, remove the battery strap, unbolt 2 x 10mm battery terminals and lift it out, reverse to refit - leisurely 5 minute job. Lovely bike, but please Honda, redesign the battery accessibility - radically!

    Thanks for the video, I also did this a couple of months ago. Battery access is very tight on these, and made a straightforward job into a very fiddly and frustrating experience. I ended up cutting the eyelets off the charger terminals as they were too big, and i attached smaller terminals. But that was a job in itself too - I had to buy a quality crimping tool to replace my cheap one, which was not working properly and resulting in loose connections. But its on now and looks a lot like your finished product. My advice is to estimate how long this will take, then multiply it by three. Thanks again 👍🇦🇺

      Glad it worked out, this is definitely the toughest battery access. Multiply by 4 if your filming as well 😂

    Clipping the eyelet is a good tip. That way you could squeeze the eyelet to decrease the outer diameter of it.

    For me pulling out the old battery was difficult!! Finally did it by making some fingerloops to pull on with 2 small zip ties on the terminals and raising the bottom of the battery up with a long screwdriver. Came right out.

    Thanks for the video. The dealer put the tender on for me but I am getting some funky low voltage dash shenanigans. I can see now why I may be losing some connections.

    • @MacrossGarage
      @MacrossGarage  Рік тому

      You’re welcome. What do you think the issue is?

    • @luolin2
      @luolin2 Рік тому +1

      I’m hoping that is a loose connection with one of the battery terminals. The dealer puts a tender on for all their motorcycles, so I’m hoping I can tighten the leads and ride without trouble. Seeing you doing this makes me think that maybe they didn’t get a secure fit. I get a flashing ABS light on after 20 miles of riding (this happened the last 2 days) and I got a total dash off and on issue while waiting for a light, but this went away a soon as I drove off. FB group said to check battery for low voltages. So I’m off to do what you had done. My thinking is that a problem has the easiest solution, lol.

    • @MacrossGarage

      @@MacrossGarage I just got done. The bottom hex screw was missing but that was for the awkward cover piece for the harness. I see where they has to clip the eyelets to make the tender connectors fit. I repositioned them and tightened down. Seemed a little loose and could could poor connection. Will ride 50 miles today for commute and see. Thanks for the support.

      Yes so you can remove the back piece(cover). It would be hard to attached the wiring to the terminal if you don’t remove it

      It’s pretty easy to learn. No clutch so you can’t stall. The biggest thing to learn is down shifting. It can lurch if you down shift unless you rev match it.

    By placing the connector under the seat, you won't be able to access it when the battery is dead because the seat latch is electronic. Better to leave it hanging out a bit.

    I put one on my wife Super Cub and placed it under the seat right side just enough to tuck it under but not hanging like a eyesore. These Batteries are a BITCH to get to, Honda should have these already installed because some smart ass technician wasn't smart enough to have a mechanical latch under the seat to gain access. It came in handy because these batteries go dead really quick if you let them set up. I seen the fckd up possibility seconds after I purchased it back in 2021
