- Zelda's voice hasn't exactly been consistent. Nintendo have changed her voice time and time again, seemingly on a whim. Go behind the scenes to answer the question: Why doesn't Princess Zelda sound like she used to?

You forgot to mention that Nintendo wanted Zelda in Breath of the Wild to sound British English because of the British Royal family. Nintendo chose Patricia Summersett an American voice actress to do Zelda voice and wanted her to put on the British accent. Patricia Summersett was a bit scared and thought fans wouldn't like her doing British accent as it'll sound fake, Nintendo wanted to keep her. So Patricia Summersett had a friend who was British and got her to help nail the accent. Patricia Summersett even said her friend was confused why didn't Nintendo just hire someone British?
From what I have read online, most American companies are scared of hiring British people for British accents because Americans have difficulty understanding them if they are genuine.
It also might be inconvenient to have a British actor move to the US just for voicing about 30 lines of dialogue.
@@CordyBrush but couldn't they just get a British person who lives in America to do the voice? Instead getting someone to fake the accent?
@@MERCHIODOS Or just have a British person in Britain do it? Nintendo really doesn't have a clue what the internet is, do they?
I never pictured Zelda as British anyway. Transatlantic accent at most. She also sound way too old.
@@Distress. That reminds me of how old school television had their actors speak in transatlantic accents in order to sound sorta American and sorta British in order to appeal to both audiences.
Those audio clip examples sure sound weird out of context.
The voice clips were kinda sus and sounded weird so I lowered the TV volume....

I know that a lot of people tend to ignore or dismiss ALBW, but calling it a spin-off is the most hurtful thing I've heard toward this game LMAO.
But why do they do that, it’s a great game
haha I guess it's not really a spinoff! for what it's worth, I've played the entire game and I thought it was really good!! just for some reason my brain classed it as a spinoff
I think Thomas has just misinterpreted what a Zelda spin-off is. Anything with 'The Legend of Zelda' in the title is indeed a main series game. Things like Link's Crossbow Training, Cadence of Hyrule and Hyrule Warriors are the spin-offs. The fact that the handheld Zeldas are the more 'minor' entries in the series compared to the big budget, massively hyped home console releases is what I believe he was trying to say.
@@Anu_Sol candence of hyrule isn’t a spinoff, it’s a crossover, and the series it belongs to is crypt of the necrodancer.
@@jashi2920 It may be a crossover, but generally speaking it's still considered a Zelda game and since it's not part of the main series it's a spin-off.

Just as a clarifying note, because iirc you had a similar framing in the link voice video. Phantom Hourglass is a direct sequel to Wind Waker, so it makes sense to have the characters keep the same voice. Spirit Tracks is a jump ahead in time, and the characters aren't the same incarnations, so it makes sense to have different voices-even if it is the same art style.
ooh that's a good point! thanks for the info, that may well have been the reason behind the change!
I still find it kind of weird, though. For Link, every single different link, regardless of art style, is a different VA (triforce heroes not included), but for Zelda, her VA was recast for different Zeldas, regardless of art style. Sure, it could be the reason, but if her VA was recast for different zeldas with different art styles, while change for the one with the same art style?
@@Rogeryoo Ocarina/Majora Link have the same voice. As do Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass Link.
Yeah, they are not always consistent in their casting, and some of that has to do with the voice actors as much as their own desires. But in the case of the same Link & Zelda voices existing for both WW/PH and then both being recast for ST, there is at least a plausible line of reasoning. I mean they could have just used the exact same voice clips for the 2nd DS game if they'd wanted.
Now that I think about it though, Ocarina/Majora & Wind/Phantom are the only 2 times in the main series that the characters are canonically the same individuals (after voice acting started being included). And they were consistent with keeping them the same voice both times, not just Link but also Zelda.
@@ThomasGameDocs Can you do Ness from Earthbound next?
@@jmporkbob age of calamity isn't a sequel but is around the time of botw and they have the same va for zelda 100% and link as far as i can tell, and we will also have to see when botw2 comes out
Actual reason: she is a different person each time (not including sequals)
And when they didn’t bother to find a new one despite it being a different Zelda, well they were probably just a being lazy. Link is the most important one since you hear it most.
This is literally what I was about to type. I don't find it surprising that she would have a different voice each time. They aren't all the same person, just reincarnations of the same person.
Yeah, this video was giving very much SwankyBox. It’s pretty self explanatory and only requires 60 seconds to explain.
Honestly the point of these videos are less to explain why the voice changes and more just do a fun recap of all the different voice actors these characters have, posing it as a question is just for click bait more or less
@@frickinfrick8488 But the content of the video is _trying_ to answer the question, not just recap the changes.

@@ThomasGameDocs good for you big man.

The reason Link and Zelda were recast for Spirit Tracks is likely because they're different characters. Link from Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass is the Hero of Winds, while Spirit Tracks takes place several decades later and stars the Hero of Trains, alongside a descendant of Zelda (who is also named Zelda)
i can definitely understand all this. but i still find it funny and strange how OoT and TP princess Zelda share the same voice actress (same goes for SS and BoTW Zelda) but not Spirit Tracks and WW Zelda
@@flytothemountains824 if I had to guess they didn't find a new voice actress because TP Zelda had very little screentime compared to say Link.
@@Robbie_Haruna at least in the TP manga Princess Zelda had more screen time there than how she was in the game and I admire her badass personality there, I hate the fact how the game just doesn’t mention about her a lot.

@@flytothemountains824 Brawl doesn't really help much considering it relegates every character to being a mute.
I know TP Zelda was pretty bland to begin with, but no dialog at all, even in text form did her no favors.
@@Robbie_Haruna I see where you're coming from, but Brawl does have voice actors. with a LOT of voice clips, which means that theoretically they could have foresaw that brawl was coming out and got a new VA for TP/Brawl Zelda, if that makes sense

Rule number one: do never blame the voice actors. It is (usually) never their fault if their performance isn't living up to the expectations
Yeah, it’s often how they’re directed, as that’s the point of there being a voice director. They do what’s asked of them. “DO AN ENGLISH ACCENT!!”
“But I don’t know how…”

A Link Between Worlds is not a spinoff, it's a sequel to A Link to the Past.
It's not really a sequel so much as a reimagining.
Takes a lot of inspiration, but puts its own spin on it.
@@Robbie_Haruna I guess you can call it that, but it is also still a direct sequel. There are murals to the Link of LttP, and the big bad's plans revolve around finding the descendants of the sages in that game, in order to resurrect Ganon. And, once again the hero has to travel two different world, one a dark mirror of the other, in order to stop this.
It is similar in many ways to its direct predecessor, but there's an in-universe reason for it. It's the same exact place, less than a century later.
@@Robbie_Haruna It’s literally called Triforce of the Gods 2 in Japan, and uses a mostly the same overworld.
Seriously, just because it's a handheld game that doesn't exclude it from the timeline, ALBW was in a way a return to form to the formula of a less linear world before BotW.
@@Schwarzorn That doesn't really mean much when it's clearly not a direct sequel any more than any other Zelda game (aside from Majora's Mask, Adventure of Link and Phantom Hourglass,) it's centuries later and doesn't feature any of the same characters, nor the same iterations of the titular characters. It's a "sequel" in the sense that every Zelda game is a sequel to previous Zelda games, but it's undeniably not a direct sequel.
It's more accurate to call it the Twilight Princess to ALttP's Ocarina of Time than anything. Same timeline (just a long time later,) follows a similar basic formula, but with its own spin put on things.
12:57 Zelda's Latin American voice actress is Mexican VA Jessica Ángeles. She's known for playing characters like Marinette from Ladybug, Super Girl most of the time, Chihiro and Lin on Spirited Away, Darla from Finding Nemo, Unikitty on The Lego Movie, Sonia on Pokemon Journeys, Catra on the She-Ra reboot, and Aurora on Ralph Breaks The Internet, among many others

That's dope
@@lovelesswish1972 when she was a kid probably
@@sugarcapart I mean obviously she was a child but still, my mind now will see Zelda shaking a dead fish in a bag every time I play BOTW
Jessica Ángeles also had a similar controversy to the english voice actress involving the pronuciation of "Hyrule" as "E-roo-leh" and the change of Zelda's voice in Age of Calamity. Things that she had nothing to do with, I don't understand the reason of blaming and sending harassing messages to her :/
About the french dubs: The French and French Candian dub have the same french VA but for the French Canadian version, they changed some sentenses so that french canadian would better understand the dialogues.
@@thinkandgame3627 i know than a memory, she uses a way of talking to her father that does not exist (or is incorrect, I don't really know, please leave me alone with my baguettes and my fromages) in Canadian French, so they changed the dubbing of this cutscene
@@thinkandgame3627 actually every french canadian version I've heard didn't have a different accent, it's just the sentences who change. Idk exactly why but I think it's because of a law of french canadian translation
The two (dialects? languages? whatever) are decently different.
You'd be hard pressed to find any European French that would properly understand what the hell "Esti de câlice de tabarnak" is supposed to mean.
There are small differences, but they're big enough to be noticeable. It's like how Latin American Spanish is different from Spain Spanish
@@tsrenis It's a bit of a different situaton with Latin American Spanish though, since that in and of itself is a "fictional" dialect of sorts with no local idioms so everyone can understand it. A more akin comparison would be a "neutral" French that's made for both France and Canada, lacking all unique aspects of either of them.
Being English, I genuinely don't mind Zelda's voice in BotW. I know it's a bit put on but whenever you hear the Royal Family, their voices are very prim and proper too which might sound unnatural to us, but is probably how they were taught to speak. At least I don't see as much of an issue as everyone else seems to.
Same honestly, I find her voice very pleasing
Her voice was jarring to me a bit at first, and my only real criticism in BotW is the crying scene. It just wasn't the best delivery compared to the other dubs, the French one especially knocked that scene out of the park and even makes ME feel like crying just listening to her. BUT I will say, Patricia got a LOT better in Age of Calamity, like she's able to emote better with her voice and I was genuinely happy she improved. Makes me all the more excited for BotW2.
Sorry you’re English
Same
Most people complain about her fake-sounding accent, but it’s a million times better than the King, and the narrator in Age of Calamity (same voice actor), and since no one complains about those two, clearly the “fake accent” isn’t the reason like they pretend it is.
Anybody else feel a little sad when Thomas called ALBW a spinoff? Even if it’s an accident, it’s still a mainline game, and a damn good one at that.
Kinda pisses me off when people classify the handheld games as spin offs.
Yeah, that was a bit disheartening tbh. It's such a lovely game
@@patrickramseyart being a spin-off doesn’t automatically make it a bad game. It isn’t a direct sequel to ALTP since it puts its spin on it, with it being a handhold game.

The reason Link and Zelda are recast in Spirit Tracks is because they aren't the Link and Zelda from Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass. Every iteration of Link and Zelda has a different voice for the most part.
He said the same thing on the Link video. I think he don't understand that Link and Zelda are different characters in most games.
Zelda is always getting her voice cords changed.

I personally love her english voice in BotW, it's a nice, refreshing change because it no longer gives off the old damsel-in-distress vibe, with that accent and the lower voice she sounds much more elegant, genuinely like a princess.

Dude same, she sounds so much more regal. I also think it just differentiates her a bit from Princess Peach too. It’s surface level, but it’s always bothered me a bit that they were both blondes with pink dresses and high voices. This more regal and studious Zelda is so much more interesting

*Confused, angry Zelda lore understanding person noises*
I believe French is one of he best voices of Zelda. Aldeline Chetail is a relatively common VA in France. She dubbed war games and such. And I loved seeing her in Age of Calamity and can't wait for the Sequel of BotW.

My issue with the English dub of Breath of the Wild was that Zelda's voice sounded really unnatural to me. It sounded like someone trying to make their voice as high pitched as possible rather than talking normal. Guess now I know I was right lol. She does sound a lot better in Age of Calamity though, so I'm looking forward to BotW 2.
I have the same complaint about Mipha though, her voice is just so unnatural imo. The only normal sounding woman in the game to me was Urbosa and also young Impa from AoC
To be honest a race of fish people is unnatural in itself.

They change the voice actress Zelda whenever there is a new Zelda. For example, the Zeldas from Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass are the same person. That’s why they have the same voice actress. In Spirit Tracks, that Zelda is a different person, a descendent of the Zelda from Wind Waker. That’s why Nintendo change the voice actress for Spirit Tracks. Same thing for Link

The Ocarina of Time voice for Zelda will always be my favorite. She had a way of sounding like a captured maiden but also a powerful sage all at the same time, which is a tough feat to pull off. I'm not a huge fan of the BOTW Zelda's voice in English, since it is a bit low and I never pictured Zelda as British. But that's certainly not the voice actresses fault. They cast her because that was the voice the higher ups wanted for their Zelda. She was just giving the voice they hired.

I thought Zelda's BOTW VA did great until I finished playing the game and read the comments online. I didn't know the actress received much hate. I haven't changed my opinion, and I'm liking her voice in Age of Calamity the most
I think she was bettered directed in Age of Calamity or just more confident. I think all the actors improved in that game.
Honestly I REALLY love the voice that Summersett gave Zelda. Yes it is lower and completely different, but it makes her stand out uniquely and for me it fit Zelda more than the high pitched voices she had before. Sure, they were all wonderful in their own way, but it was a fresh new sound for the princess and I really enjoy it. It has something soothing too, elegant. 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Me too! I actually like that she has a lower voice. It makes botw's Zelda much different and easy to differentiate with the other Zeldas because I thought if they all have similar voices then it will make me think that they are all the same person across all games (which they are not unless mentioned in game). Overall, botw Zelda's voice and accent is giving me a sense of familiarity in a way that it's based in irl british accent but not too perfect, which kinda make sense that it sounds weird since it's a fantasy game (I just imagine that's how hylian royalty were taught to speak) At least that's how I view it.
I have some information about the French voice actress for botw who is Adeline Chetail, she's a popular voice actress in my opinion, like she voiced Ellie in the last of us and Mei in overwatch and some Ghibli movie like Arietty, she started voice acting at a really young age she was 7years old when's she started, but all I known about the botw audition is the fact that it was super secretive too, they just told her that she was a princess of a certain land and that was it, when she knew she was taken for the role and finally told that it was Zelda she knew she had a big role to play and I think she was "scared" of doing bad and not representing well Zelda. Patricia Summerset's Zelda doesn't resemble original Japanese version, but it very unique. I'd recognize her as Zelda any day of the week, whereas original one kinda blends with all other anime girl voices
I think by TotK she had a better grasp on not losing accent. I think the Japanese Zelda VA is great, for Skyward Sword, because of that character's portrayal as a cheerier childhood friend, but less fitting for how Zelda is portrayed as being more dynamic in BotW/TotK with a more thorough arc.

I actually really like Botw Zeldas English voice. Sure it's not the best voice acting ever but I think some will agree that the voice is distinctly unique, and I think that matters sometimes more than having a generic Hollywood performance that's really good.

The reason they changed the actors for Link and Zelda in Spirit Tracks is that they're different people from the Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass counterparts. Almost every individual Link and Zelda has a distinct voice actor, but sometimes they would recycle voices in 2D games out of convenience, like Four Swords Adventures and Minish Cap.

She is an Actor, Voice Actor, and Audiobook Reader from Hamburg, Germany.
Her acting career started 2007, and since then she did about 20 movies/series, but nothing special.
Her Audiobook career started 2013, with the famous kidsbook about Conni, and later the "Chaosschwestern" (Chaos-sisters) series.
Her voice-acting carrer contains mostly of syncro work for diverse movies and series, maybe most noteable: Yuuko Kobayashi "as Masako" in Naruto Shippuden the movie, Mai Nakahara "as Suzune Ichihara" in The Irregular at the Magic School, Manami Numakura "as Otoya Takechi" in Akuma no Riddle, and many more.
Her work on BOTW seems to be her first work as an voice actor for video games.
Hope this brings some light about the German Voice Actress!
Perfect timing with the video just got done playing Skyward Sword HD
I don't like Zelda's voice in English for BOTW, I play with the Japanese voice acting because I think the Japanese VA portrays the emotion much better, especially on that crying scene for example. Much more visceral imo
yeah I totally agree, but you can’t blame the actress tho. it was Nintendo’s fault for voice directing her making her sound that way.
and yeah, I totally agree that the Japanese is a lot better. but there were times that Patricia did do a nice job for Zelda, for example in that one cutscene where Zelda was praying to the goddess of statue is the only good thing abt her English voice
@@flytothemountains824 I agree with this 100% and I don’t think it’s the VA’s fault at all.
To be fair, the Japanese voice actors overacts in the crying at the end. It’s still better than the English crying, but I still expect a better match with the face than that.
@@flytothemountains824 never blamed the VA tho or that she didn't have her moments, just preferred the Japanese interpretation for her:) I do look forward to hear what Zelda's voice may sound like in the upcoming games; I think there'd be great comparison material between the games as there is plenty of spoken dialogue to listen to going forward I hope! ^u^
it's really not much of a mystery why they recast for spirit tracks. spirit tracks takes place many, many years after phantom hourglass. so, despite the characters looking similar, link and zelda in that game are different characters than phantom hourglass and spirit tracks.
Zelda herself is _very obviously_ a different character in Spirit Tracks. Her personality is completely different from Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass!
Gosh, the crying scene in Japanese made me wanna cry too. SHEESH, she's a good actress. The English one is good too but she ain't as good at crying lol.
I personally love Patricia take, I know it's not everybody's cup of tea, however, I think it's unique and makes her stand out from other Zelda's, mainly, because they don't talk. However, for me, I really enjoyed her take.
Man, these voice changing vids are very interesting and amusing to watch, keep it up Thomas!
I am not sure why you called A Link Between Worlds a spin off. It's a half remake half sequel to A Link to the Past. It's very much not a spin off.
Exactly
when i heard zelda say “ tadaa” my heart melted.
imagine a princess walks up to you, opens her hands and there’s a frog all whilst she says “tadaa” with soo much giddiness
Who was the voice actress for Zelda in Smash Ultimate? She spoke in the World of Light Cutscene
I’ve been wondering that too!
That was so enjoyable to watch. Thanks! I appreciate the scenes of English dub Zelda scenes
This guy deserves way more subs
Eventually he “will” have more sub…
I am sure :)
I think Skyward Sword’s Zelda is my absolute favorite iteration of the princess. She’s one of the few Zeldas that makes me feel invested in beating the game so I can see her again. I got the game when I was about 6 or so, and the first time I heard her singing, I felt so calm and happy. Yu Shimamura has a beautiful voice and I’m glad they brought her back for BotW.
Side note: I have to agree, even as an American, that Patricia Somerset’s acting and her accent were a bit off, but she’s not terrible, and I now know her as the official English voice of Zelda, so that’s awesome.
I love the pauses in these videos with the drums ending
every time he show how zelda sounded like i feel like i need to lower down the audio even tho im wearing headphones
I believe the recastings for Spirit Tracks can be chopped up to the Link and Zelda in the game NOT being the same ones from WW and PH, despite the art style.
As a Brit, I have to say I thought Patricia’s accent was pretty decent and that the voice was great! I was quite happy that they went with the English sound, you don’t really hear a lot of accents in the most popular western games/voice acting in general that aren’t American, even when the story is set somewhere else.
Italian dub in botw is extremely good! I suggest everyone to give it a try at least once!
Spirit tracks recast isn't a mystery, they are different Zelda's and Link's honestly the fact that they had the same va for Zelda in TP was kinda of a shock to me because it breaks tradition for recasting
Everybody gangsta until “Why doesn’t Mario sound like he used to?” comes out
lol
but we had a video like that already *please dont whoosh me aaah*
I would assume most sounded different because they just wanted someone else to play a different incarnation of her. Also, why no including Zelda in Smash Ultimate? She has voiced lines in that one, as well.
While Tetra is indeed Princess Zelda, she didn't appear in her princess form in Phantom Hourglass.
My Headcanon is that..... prepare....
Its a hunch, but....
*she didnt want to* lmao
Zelda's first voiced appearance in a Nintendo-made game was actually for a game called BS The Legend of Zelda. The title was a Japan exclusive remake of the first Zelda game for the Super Famicom. They achieved voice acting via live broadcast to a satellite radio accessory, called the Broadcast Satellaview, hence the BS acronym. She then was voiced by a different actress in another broadcasted game, BS The Legend of Zelda: Ancient Stone Tablets, which was a sequel to A Link to the Past, reusing many of its assets and locations. www.behindthevoiceactors.com/characters/The-Legend-of-Zelda/Princess-Zelda/?s=otn
I thought for a second you were saying the main acronym for bs safe to say I was confused for a good while.
@@powerfullpummel6417 Lol. I see how it could easily be misread. I edited my original post for clarity.
I’m replying in hopes that your comment will get boosted to the top. I swear all the important things are at the bottom. I guess they couldn’t handle the truth?
Three things I've got to mention:
- As a non native speaker, I don't really differentiate acted accents from true ones, so I was surprised to learn that Zelda's BotW actress is actually Canadian, they totally got me there lmao
- Forgot how much I missed the small piano bits at the end of each video, any reasoning of why he doesn't does them anymore? Is it because of time or he got tired of them?
- A small thing about Zelda's Latin American VA since he asked in the video: she also voices (Miraculous) Ladybug in our dub, so my brain can't unhear the similarity between that show's theme song and Age of Calamity's lmao
I personally loved that they included Zelda's screams in the final battle. It really makes you feel the intensity of the moment.
I am pretty familiar with BOTW's English Dub. However, I am French, and both versions have subtle nuances for their markets which really help us understand the characters more... Same actors, yet very small differences make these versions resonate with people. ^^
Thomas, I'd love to explain in detail some observations. There are french nuances that echo differently on each side of the Atlantic. The way the King speaks to his Daughter is very interesting. In France he speaks more like a King with his hierarchy to a subject with the "vous" (you). In Canada he speaks more like a father to his daughter with a familiar "tu" (also you). This change in context is very nuanced yet important to make for Nintendo to bother re-recording lines. ^^
I love the art, time, passion and investment that goes into those small details to make these translations a reality. The broader games are better for it. :D
This fella has some great videos. I think I'll be subscribing, liking, and leaving a comment!
8:46 Legend of Zelda Link Between World is not a spin-off, the game is a sequel to Legend of Zelda Link to the Past, spin-off is Hyrule Warriors:Age of Calamity.
Zelda: EEYYYAAAAAAACH
Store clerk: NO, not my pots!
I think her accent is weird in BOTW because she is trying to do a posh engilish accent but it’s off. I can tell becaue I’m English. But other than that I like it a lot and she portrayed Zelda really well. The acting is brilliant it’s just the accent that is weird to me
Yeah I agree. I'm American, but her accent sounded weird to me too.
*Zelda:* 4:12
*Chris:* I hope it's NOT poisonous. 😨
A Link Between Worlds its not a spin-off its a direct sequel to ALTP and a mainline title.
Maybe because she grew up..... AND they are different people named Zelda..... Cool video, love these
Edit, the voice clips were kinda sus and sounded weird so I lowered the TV volume....
i always wanted to know who voiced zelda cdi... now i'm sad you'll not talk about it :/
it's apparently a woman called Bonnie Jean Wilbur - not sure how she ended up with the role though!
I'll admit--when BOTW was first teased and I heard Zelda's voice.. I was SOOO skeptical and was not open to the idea. Because it totally changed how the series was leading up to that point.. But once the game was released, I was hooked and I'm so glad nintendo made the decision they did! Patricia totally brought Zelda to life and I always looked forward to the cutscenes with her. Really made me more connected to want to save Zelda than any other game before.
