It's because all the kids who played it in their childhoods are now in their 20s on the internet lol. It happens all the time with stuff. Skyward Sword might start seeing a resurgence in popularity and love in 5-6 years.
Yeah literally idk why someone asked that tbh and honestly some of them don't sound *that* different so unless you were specifically trying to find a difference in voices you wouldn't notice. For example, Toon Link (Wind Waker) and Young Link sound pretty similar so I doubt anyone who played OoT would be like "OMG WHY DOES LINK SOUND DIFFERENT" when they play WW. They would just be like "Noice" (Btw ofc ik like TP link sounds different from Toon Link but I was saying *some* of them sound too similar to even notice)
It's odd his Twilight Princess VA didn't like his performance. I think he's my favorite. Definitely the most intense Link, it fits the vibe the game was going for perfectly, imo.
I actually found him to be the least expressive Link when listening to them back to back. and i remember feeling back in the day that TP Link always seems a bit detached/unimmersed in the situations that he finds himself in. He did a great job but if you look at it a certain way you may see it lacks something the others have.
@@inafridge8573 tbf i feel like its just more realistic and dark, just as the games feeling is. The rest Links are a lot more animeish or cartoonish so they need to be a lot more expressive
The link's va changing actually makes more sense when you realise that those are different people. It's not just one guy in different games, it's different guys, sometimes blood related sometimes not. They all have different personalities and different lives, all they share is a name. They only changed the va when the link changed. Wind waker and phantom hourglass link are the same person, spirit tracks link is another person from a few generations later. Oot and mm links are also the same person.
@@M.F.Hafizhan wanted to mention that until i realised adult timeline links probably don't share a soul (since oot link got transported to another timeline) and didn't wanna overcomplicate
I found it way more professional and qualitative that they record almost every time the voice of link in every game era It is better to have a neat and matching voice for every link aesthetic/character.
Learning about the people behind the voices is so cool. Seeing what the Adult Link VA actually looks like, him being told to "not sound Japanese" and then seeing the work he actually did. And really he did a great job. I'm glad they changed the voices because I feel the voice for both young and adult link are better than the ones they were working with during development. I especially love Young Link's voice, it just sounds so cool it fits him perfectly imo, and its unique too, it doesn't sound like a regular old real life human being, you know, he sounds like a character, in the same way that Mario and Mickey Mouse don't sound like a regular old real life human, you know. And I love what they did to it in MM adding that spooky ghostly echoey effect that made it sound badass and magical and i think its effectiveness hinges on the unique qualities of the work already done for OoT.
One thing that Nintendo does seem to keep consistent is that each incarnation of Link has a different voice. It explains why Ocarina of Time and Majora's mask share the same voice, but also why Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass share a voice. Spirit Tracks takes place 100 years after Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass and is thus a different Toon Link, so it makes sense to have a new voice actor.
Yes although of course some Links reuse previous voices such as in the ALttP Remaster/Four Swords game, Young Link's voice is reused for Link in ALttP Remastered
Actually link can speaks, when an NPC ask something and you select one of the available answers, it can be assumed that link said the selected answer, but this can't be achieved if Link had voice just like Mario. Talking about this, the objective in Zelda games is cast serious sentiment on the player rather than making them laugh just like in Mario games
Techinically Hylian is pronounced exactly as Japanese, just with a different writing system, with some unique words and such. And Geldoan (the language of the Geldo, mistraslated as "Gerudo" in Ocarina of Time) is just English, but with a different writing system (with some unique words and such). So Link is speaking Geldoan when he says "Come on!". Same with Navi saying "Hey!", "Listen!", and "Watch out!" in Ocarina or Time. Tetra and her crew speak full "Hylian" in Tetra's Trackers for Nintendo GamCube. As for Breath of the Wild, we can assume that Japanese is the truest voice option to Hylian.
The reason the actors were told they would only be making grunting noises after they got in the booth is because otherwise that particular casting call is probably code for "hentai"
I mean, the reason they kept switching Link's actor is easy to figure out. Every time Link gets a new actor, that's also a new incarnation of Link. The different Links are different people, so it makes sense why they have different voices.
@@Random1567 is reincarnation? The hero's shade (I think is it's name, we call it "la sombra del héroe" in Spanish) and in twilight princess, who happens to be Link from Oot. Yeah, except FSA Link has WW Link's voice and TMC and (GBA) LttP Link have OoT Link's voice. So occasionally different incarnations have the same VA. But yeah I dunno why Thomas keeps saying "I don't know why they recast him!" when he even mentions they're different people at the beginning lol. @@Egg-zactly The Hero's Shade is OoT Link, I think TP is also supposed to be a descendant of him too? Also, Wind Waker Link wasn't a reincarnation. He was just chosen by the gods when the Hero decided to just not reincarnate in that timeline
i don’t think i’d like a talking link to be honest, the whole silent protag thing feels so right for him. he has so much emotion in his expressions and random yelling that him talking would take away from that, i think.
I personally think it’s time for a voiced link. In BOTW, the silent thing kind of just feels off with other voice actors actually talking. It worked a bit for lore reasons, but I think he should talk now that he finished his quest or whatever. The worst part is, in all Zelda games he talks to other characters, we just don’t hear his voice saying words except for in wind waker and in BOTW he talks to npcs and has conversations with them, him not talking just wouldn’t really make sense anymore
Honestly, I think changing voice actors for each iteration of Link justs fits the idea of the same hero being reincarnated time and time again so perfectly. It really adds to the newness and atmosphere of each different Link so much. Especially with Takanashi giving such a perfectly fitting performance. Remember when everyone was confused about Link's gender when BOTW was revealed? Even the voice acting was about as androgynous as you can get LMAO
@@fortniteshouldlearn6595 I am a guy with a ponytail. Link looked female in the first trailer. There's was speculation that you could choose Link's gender which future fueled the fire.
Wow! This has happened so gradually over so long a period of time that I never noticed. Each voice actor seemingly bases their timbre off their predecessor. It's like a 20+ year game of telephone! Also, it's weird to think about the first young and adult Links having different voice actors. In my mind, I just think "Yup, that's the same person somehow aged up."
I’m so glad you brought up Jeffrey Rath. His voice for Link, while not official, is one of the more interesting things about the history of Link’s voice
Nah, I’d be fine with it. And the “they’d be speaking hylian!” is obviously such a copout-we know that characters in SFF genres don’t really speak the same language we do, yet it doesn’t break our emersion. And the Voice Acting in BotW sounded just fine to me -I love the job the American voice actors did, but I’m also curious to hear how the OG Japanese ones did, too-
Well if you wanna hear what Adult OoT Link sounds like if he talks, albeit in JP, listen to Nightmare's JP voice from Soul Calibur 2 , same guy who voices Adult Link from OoT.
It makes sense that there would be different voice actors since in Zelda’s lore, Link is the reincarnation of the hero and isn’t just 1 person. Similarly, Princess Zelda is a different character in every game because she is the reincarnation of the Goddess Hylia. The only returning character in Zelda who is a single person is Ganon.
BotW Link is one of the few times I’ve heard a Link actually laugh, let alone sing!! WW Link will probably always be my favorite kiddo Link-he’s got so much sass and it shows in his voice acting, too
"Knowing Nintendo, there's always a chance they recast. You just never know." I mean, it's not like they change his voice randomly. If it's a game featuring the same Link as a previous game (OoT/MM, WW/PH, BotW/AoC/BotW2 etc.) he keeps the same voice. If it's a new Link, he gets a new voice. Triforce Heroes is the only one that breaks that pattern, but I mean, it's Triforce Heroes. The whole game is basically an easter egg. Edit: Oh and 4 swords, I guess it's a multiplayer thing.
If you wanna hear adult OoT Link sing, Hiyama Nobuyuki was also the voice of Hiei on Yu Yu Hakusho, which had a few tie-in albums with songs performed by the voice actors.
Canonicaly, it makes sense for Link to have a different voice in almost every game, as Link is rarely the same person. Rather, a reincarnation. So even though they are all named Link, they are all different people. And no 2 people truly have the same voice.
Arguably not reincarnation either, just someone who possess the 'spirit of the hero'. This is evidenced by games where there is more than 1 Link in the same place (Twilight Princess, A Link Between Worlds), and the Wind Waker, whose Link could not have been connected to the original Hero of Time, as that hero left the timeline. The more you know.
@@Raelilah93 I already explained how that's not possible. And it adds nothing anyway. If each Link is a "different person", then there's no point in being a reincarnation. Which Link is reincarnated in BotW then, which comes after all timelines? All of them? Do you see how that doesn't make sense? Plus, BotW is a soft reboot of the series anyway, something most fans have not picked up on.

Anime/Japanese acting has a certain nuance that's easily noticeable to anyone outside of Japan (not that it's a Japanese voice per se, just that it's a bit weird). Not to say that it's bad, but I get what they meant when they asked to actor to be subtle about it. You can still easily tell all the Link VAs are Japanese, though. The only one that's remotely subtle is BoTW Link. I think it works though, the over-exaggerated grunts of Link work way better for him and what little of his character he has.
Its always been a dream of mine to voice Link at least once. It'll never happen of course but it's just one of those fun fantasies to think about. It'd be a true honor to voice Link after all the memories and nostalgia The Legend of Zelda has given me.
Anything can happen. Dont say it'll never happen, because possibilities are endless. I hope I get to hear you voicing my childhood character someday in the future

The only game missing is Link's Awakening remake, in which they recasted Mitsuki Saiga (ALBW) to voice Link again, i believe she recorded new voiceclips too, i think this is the first time they've done an exception and recasted a voice talent.
@@CuccoMagic No, he's not. The Link from Link's Awakening is the one from A Link to the Past, who is the long dead ancestor of the Link in A Link Between Worlds. While ALBW is a sequel to LttP, they do not share the same Link. Depending on which version you subscribe to, that old Link either retired after the Oracle games, or died on that raft at the end of Link's Awakening.
@@ZipplyZane What? Died on the raft?! *After* saving Koholint? Is that a real theory? Doesn't he have to 'sow his seed' somewhere so there will be another Link later? Like it's fanonly accepted that OoT Link marries Malon and TP Link is his descendent. Aonuma will probably never address this because of the inappropriateness of the material, but I was under the impression that each Link 'had' to impregnate some girl who wasn't Zelda at some point in his life. So the next Link won't be related to Zelda, and that keeps them from being inbred. I felt like that was the whole point of setting up Ganon's curse that Link & Zelda could never find happiness together. Though, admittedly, that is all headcanon... as well as me just sort of *hoping* there's no incest in the series. Boy... I really got off topic there...
Hearing the ocarina of time voice clips in isolation really highlighted the talent of the voice actors, I can't imagine how tough it would be to just yell into a microphone repeatedly and then pick the best one lol
OOT Link is significantly the most muscular Link there's ever been. A lot of people think BotW Link is rather twinkish, but that's a pretty unmerited belief, considering if you actually take his shirt off you can see that he has abs and pretty defined delts (you can see his physique best during the animation when he enters the trial of the sword). I'd say he easily takes 2nd place, but he still pales in comparison to the sheer muscle mass of the Hero of Time. For goodness sake, you can actually see his rhomboid and he appears to have a serrated serratus. I'd also say he preforms the biggest feat of strength in the series when he flips over the giant black pillars in and around Ganon's castle with the golden gauntlets. (he also has the best hairstyle in my opinion)
If you like OoT Link's shouts, then check out "King of Braves: GaoGaiGar". Or get a King of Fighters game and one-man the whole game with Joe Higashi. Oh yeah, and Young Link's VA also did Taki from Soul Calibur.
Whoa, I seriously always believed that Link has the same voice actor in Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword, but they had him act a bit differently. Those Links also look quite alike, so that only made it more likely in my head.
The only resemblance between TP and SS link is that it's a dirty blonde guy. But otherwise, TP link is strong, manly and powerful while SS link is a caricature
@@D3__ Their physique are quite alike, with the exception of SS Link being older and a bit blonder The artstyle obviously makes them look different and SS is definitely more expressive though.
I really like how they use a different VA for each different link even when they look the same, like spirit tracks where the link is different than the other toon link
I really love the idea of every Link having their own voice actor, which so far seems to be the case. The N64 Links were the same Link, so it works there. Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass have the same Link as well, but Four Swords Link is a different one. So it really does seem like all these instances where the same voice actor is used have the same Link. Pretty damn cool ngl

Changing voice between Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass Toon Link and the Spirit Track Toon Link is because in the first 2 games the character is the same (like OoT and Majora), but in the 3rd Toon Link is a completly different person. I think this level of detail from Nintendo is incredible

link not talking in his games is actually a very important feature of his character, for me at least. i would be really disappointed if they gave him lines
Yeah like even if someone starts a tradition in a game and it doesn't make sense, they should at least continue it. Because it would be worse having a weird tradition that suddenly changes every other game than it would be to just have a weird tradition and maintain it. That's why even tho I don't exactly think Link not speaking is 100% the way to go, since it has already been established, they might as well continue it.

@@ExNihiloComesNothing Or Masako Nozawa. I think she's in the Book of World Records for the longest any actor has voiced a single character. As Son Gokū in Dragon Ball. I never expected link to retain the same voice as he’s usually a different person in each game. I think of link as a general direction of voice quality but not suuuuper strict and specific. I usually enjoy hearing his voiceovers evolve as he’s needed to have sounds for more types of actions in new media.
BotW Link has my favorite voice, he's the one that sounds the most human and less like an anime character lmao, besides, how cute is his humming? I also have some nostalgia for the OoT voices tho The Link from Spirit Tracks is different from the Link from Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, so it makes sense they'd recast even if it's still a toon Link!
So, they change the voice to differentiate the different Links, with some exceptions like triforce heroes. That's why spirit tracks Link has a different voice. He's a different Link from windwaker and phantom hourglass. Just thought it was weird you never directly pointed out the most obvious reason for why Link has different voice actors.

I found it way more professional and qualitative that they record almost every time the voice of link in every game era
It is better to have a neat and matching voice for every link aesthetic/character.

@@Kevin-jb2pv "I said we wanted CLASSIC sound and gameplay. Not old and archaic sounding."

"They all would speak in hylian"
-Aonuma
Toon Link in WW in the tower of Gods:
"COME ON!".
Counter Argument: Link knows can read, write, and understand Hylian, but only knows how to speak English.
I wish they all spoke Hylian, that'd be so rad
Actually link can speaks, when an NPC ask something and you select one of the available answers, it can be assumed that link said the selected answer, but this can't be achieved if Link had voice just like Mario. Talking about this, the objective in Zelda games is cast serious sentiment on the player rather than making them laugh just like in Mario games
brUHHh

I mean, the reason they kept switching Link's actor is easy to figure out. Every time Link gets a new actor, that's also a new incarnation of Link. The different Links are different people, so it makes sense why they have different voices.
They reused Oot links voice for other links, so not exactly
Link is reincarnated tho, so they could’ve still used the same voice actor if they wanted to.

The “come on” line in WW caught me off guard when I played but I loved it. I think Link saying short lines randomly more often would be cool
@@skateorpie
Yea, I wouldn’t mind it actually.
To me TP Link had the best voice. I've always liked how deep and mature it sounds compared to the rest.
Isn’t OOT adult link the most manly?
@@TigerTabCat1 technically they're both around the same age (I mean, yeah, OOT Link appears in TP too - who's obviously much older there - but I was mainly talking about the playable OOT Link) sooo..at the end it depends on you, who you see as the most manly, the most mature one. To me it's TP Link, not only cuz of the voice or his design or whatever but mainly cuz he didn't skip 7 years unlike OOT Link, like TP Link's mental age ain't that of a minor you know. Meanwhile Oot Link is more like a child trapped in an older body, but that's just my perspective :)
@@Jenn_Bran good point on mental maturity. Just thought you were strictly mentioning the tone of voice. In that case adult link from OOT has the deepest, manliest voice out of all the links.
The game was good in general.
"The new design for Link was tall and manly" *insert thirsty sigh* 😂

This Link will always be my favorite💚😎😍the one that got me into Smash Bros. Melee which got me into Ocarina of Time, which then got me into Soul Calibur II and man that Link still holds that #1 spot for me. Twilight Princess Link is my #2😊
My favorite too !
Soul calibur 1 for Dreamcast also has this actor's voice !
Wait a minute… Link, the silent protagonist, has had different voices over the years? That’s a new one.
Funny thing about that, links adult oot voice has played a number of different Characters, like the Japanese voice for seigfried in soul Calibur, Hero in smash, and anime Characters like Guy Shishioh from GaoGaiGar
It's neat to look into people IMDbs
He doesn't actually say words. He only grunts
Never heard the grunts while playing? Do you play all your games on Mute?
That's a new one.
@@WD_RatLad nah hes given a bunch of small voice dailogue options that the player can choose from in multiple games
@@DeitySkullKid he also was joe higashi from fatal fury 1 to kof 13, and batsu ichimonji from rival schools
I feel like you are off about voice acting for young male characters.
Adult women are pretty often cast for any long term gig because they can do the job for a long time without puberty, school, and child labor laws being an issue.
Nancy Cartwright the voice of Bart Simpson being one of the biggest
@@ExNihiloComesNothing Or Masako Nozawa. I think she's in the Book of World Records for the longest any actor has voiced a single character. As Son Gokū in Dragon Ball. She voiced a young boy for about three years, and then he grew up, and she continued voicing him (cuz fans would outrage over that, and it's hard to get a voice that matches well enough). Same as when Nancy Cartwright voices Bart in the times he's shown as an adult.
Link is just different people that happen to have the name link and the spirit of the hero but what I find so funny is that in BOTW literally nothing makes him change his expressions except when it’s time to take a photo lol ❤️ keep up the amazing work
He already knows that.
in BOTW he also changes faces when in extreme cold, taking damage, some idle animations, and when he's out of stamina
Always when he eats and cooks
@@jamesluster1318 yep the food
He also gets a very slight smile while holding a dog iirc
10:41 never realised how anime link in TP sounds like
I'm waiting for the episode when the title will be "Why does X sound like he used to".
Long only three seconds, a white text saying "because they keep the original voice". Nothing else.
I also have some nostalgia for the OoT voices tho
The Link from Spirit Tracks is different from the Link from Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, so it makes sense they'd recast even if it's still a toon Link!
so that's why the BotW Link's voice always sounded inferior, I couldn't really point out why before you did
I love the humming that Link does while cooking in Tears of the Kingdom.
Twilight Princess Link will always be the coolest one, from his design to the voice, we'll never get a Link like him again
Nah he was too feminine. Ocarina of Time Link was the best.
mm or oot link
@@kyubei9979 Oni Link or adult Link are better than TP link
Kaji Yuki is very good.
@@JW-um5pg Skyward Sword Link was feminine.
I doubt he knows that particular piece of lore, just knew that they were a toon link of identical design.
They still reused WW/PH Link's voice for Four Swords even though he's another Link.
And also the port of A Link To the Past in GBA and Minish Cap I think uses OoT/MM Young Link's clips.
@@MsDarkz123 He said with some exceptions. Or did he add that?
Twilight Princess Link was my absolute favorite regarding voice and design
it's based on the adult link of ocarina of time dude
@@iago8761 I mean it's safe to say all the Links are based on eachother at some capacity
@@iago8761 All Links are based on other Link designs. That's like saying "toon link is based on link's awakening, they even wear the same hat! " like no duh. They have to keep designs similar so the character is easily recognizable.
The way I *gasped* when I saw Kaji Yuki in this video. I never knew, that’s amazing
