    SPOILERS!!!
When I read the page where Rudy died I starting crying, took a break, went back to reading, started to quietly sob again, took a break, went back, started crying again, and then finally I finished the excruciating page.
But then I read the part where the Hubermanns died.
    God damnit.

I finished the book thief 15 minutes ago, it took me seven crying breaks and approximately 5 soaked tissues to finish the chapter, starting from when she was talking to Rudy's body till Hans and Rosa, reading this comment was highly relatable

I literally JUST finished reading this book, and I needed to vent my feelings so I came straight away to watch this vid. The only word I can truly think of to describe this book is pure beauty! Death's character is just so effective, and each character, even the ones you don't particularly like, are just portrayed so perfectly! The words and the beauty in this story is just mind-blowing! I still cannot get my head around it. In a time of such destruction and terror, there is a story of beauty and creation and love and I just cannot fathom the beauty and flawlessness of this book!
I think this will probably be my most favourite book ever and definitely one of the ones that leaves the biggest impact.
I think its safe to say that 'I will be haunted by this book'.

    SPOLIER
i have never cried so hard when reading a book. I made it through TFIOS but on the page where Rudy dies and she finally kissed him and she- just i can't talk about it.
And when she was describing papa's grey eyes that were dying and mama's carboard lips I cried so hard.

I finished this book last week, and since I remembered it's your favourite I came looking for your review. I must tell you that it gave me chills all over again!
My favourites are also Hans and Max, I love them both so much! I can't help it! Like you said, you fall in love with all the characters and want them all to have happy endings, but at the same time I feel like the ending was as realistic as it could get. Given the fact that this is historical fiction we know that even if the characters weren't real people what they went through are things that actually happened and affected a lot of people, so for me the ending made perfect sense and gave it a sense of reality that a perfect happy ending couldn't have. This of course makes it much more devastating, but I believe it is a good thing.

I got the book for Christmas and just finished it. OMG! I reached the end...... Tears everywhere. You are human being that put me onto the book. I watched this review before I read the book, and I was like 'it can't be that good. When I read the book, I bet I won't cry'. How wrong was I. It was a beautiful story, and you're right, I don't think any another ending would have been quite right.
One of the best books I have ever read.

OMGGGG You took the words straight out of my mouth. Literally. You described it perfectly. Hans was also my favorite character. I love that he is such a good-hearted character. I agree. This book is just so beautiful. It is one of my favorites and it really lets you have a different approach to life. I just really really loved it. The plot were phenomenal. The setting was phenomenal. The writing style was phenomenal. THE CHARACTERS were absolutely phenomenal. I love almost every single one of these characters. I love Hans the most but I also really loved Max and Rudy and Liesel and etc. I agree. I found the relationships between the characters, or mainly the characters and Liesel was very moving. You really took the words out of my mouth.

I'm currently reading this book. I haven't gotten to any sad, emotional parts yet. I'm trying to prepare myself. But of what I've read so far, it's really good. Now that I know it's from death perspective, it makes a lot more sense. I was so confused. But now I understand it and I love it so far. Can't wait to finish it and watch the movie. Maybe we can talk about it together. Discuss what we liked, what we didnt. What was different in the book than in the movie. If so, that would be great. I love having discussions like that with people as passionate about this kind of thing as I am.

I love the book, but for some reason the rnd didn't hit me as hard as it could have. It is probably because Death told us what will happen to some of the characters, so I guess I subconsciously braced myself for that, but it still hurt. A lot. I grew to love Rudy, Hand and Max the most, and it was so hard to say goodbye to them. I hope I'm not the only one with an expirience like this.

Death was so good as a narrative, his phrases are beautifull.
The Book Thief gets a 4/5 or 8,5/10..

I read the book and as a reader, I'm kind of easy to distract, taking anything from days to months to read most books. This book took several hours. I fell completely and utterly in love. Recommended it to a friend and actually had to go over to her house to take it back for myself, Loved Max and Hans and Rosa and Liesel and Rudy so much, it felt like they were actual close friends of mine. Hope the movie does it justice and doesn't screw it up like some other movie adaptations of books *cough Percy Jackson cough*

    SPOILERS
I'm coming to terms with the ending, but at first I was just crushed and angry. Anyone else? I kept thinking, 'it's too much,' 'their deaths aren't justified,' 'how can the author take everything away from her like that?' But maybe that's the point; war is ceaseless, senseless carnage? Maybe it's the culmination/reason behind death's narrating presence? Notwithstanding, It's now one of my favorite books of all time. Top Three most influential for sure.

The author plays with your emotions, one page you are crying and the next you are laughing and even though the story is narrated by Death and you might think its kind of macabre the writing style it's so beautiful. I feel like I should suggest you a similar book (similar in event I mean) it's called Briar Rose by Jane Yolen. It's sort of a story within a story about a survivor the Nazi time period but the most interesting part is that intertwine within the chapters is the fairytale of sleeping beauty and the author does a really cool thing intertwining these two stories together in such an interesting way, it was actually the only book i enjoyed in year 12. It's one of my favourite books!

    Hi!!
I know this is an old video, but I had to let this message :P
This is one of my favourite books! I loved that the book was written from death's perspective too, and I also liked the way Markus Zuzak construct the story.
Even when I was reading a bad or sad part, I could see the beauty of it, or because the way he wrote it, or because I could find poetry on it or just because it had to be like that, and it would only make sense that way, despite the fact I wanted it to be different...
And my favourite character is Liesel, for be a strong young girl even after what she had been through.
I hope you don't mind, but would like to let you a reference of a book that I read a few months ago, and I enjoyd it.
The book is called 'Death at Intervals' by Jose Saramago, I don't know if you know the autor, he is a portuguese nobel, and one of my favourites. He has a particular kind of writing, but once you get used to it is easy to read.
It´s a very good book, and Iremembered to suggesting it, because in some part the main character starts to be the Death.
"In an unnamed country on the first day of the new year, people stop dying. Amid the general public, there is great celebration: flags are hung out on balconies and people dance in the streets. They have achieved the great goal of humanity - eternal life. Death is on strike.
Soon, though, the residents begin to suffer. For several months undertakers face bankruptcy, the church is forced to reinvent its doctrine, and local 'maphia' smuggle those on the brink of death over the border where they can expire naturally.
Death does return eventually, but with a new, courteous approach - delivering violet warning letters to her victims. But what can death do when a letter is unexpectedly returned?"
Sorry for some bad English in the text... :P

I thin if i had read the book a year ago, when i'd only hear the title, i would have enjoyed it much more, becuase i had heard such amazing things and it didn't quite live up to those expectations. however, that's not to say i didn't enjoy it. it's a really well written book, and the characters are really well done (especially the children) as is the writing perspective. i agree that the ending needed to be the way it is and i think i wouldn't think as highly of the book if it didn't but oh did i wish rudys wish had come true! i kind of expected it to deal more with the book burning maybe in the sense that liesel saves the banned books, but if i hadn't thought that or anything at all beforehand i think i might have been quite overwhelmed.

  • @EmilynWood

I read the book after hearing it was really going to be sad, and AFTER I saw the movie trailer for it. So... *spoiler* I thought Liesel was going to be killed by the nazis at the end of the book, and when I was coming up to the climax, I was waiting for it to happen, but it never did. When I thought it was about to happen I started crying, but then I was kinda surprised by the end. I was like, "oh." that they died. So I guess maybe that sorta took away from the experience. I felt numb with sadness, and only a few minutes after I had read the book did it start to sink in. I love this book anyway though. I was thinking she was going to die young because there's this one version of the book cover that shows her dancing with Death and I thought it was beautiful, but then she grew up and that sort of took away from it, but I still appreciated that she got to meet Death.

Catriona, you should really read "Between shades of Gray" by Ruta Sepetys. It's also a WW2 novel, but takes place in Lithuania, Siberia,... Very interesting settings. I loved the characters and i cried my eyes out as well. :')

This book broke my heart a little - I am not sure if I am emotionally strong enough for the film! Although saying that, to me the film looks a little artificial and sweet... not gritty and simply beautiful enough like the book. But we shall see!

I love this book!!! I balled my eyes out!!! I read it when I was 11 which is probably not ideal... But it is one of my most favourite books of all time!! Any recommendations for other books?

I like the Hans from the book as well, but I don't think they chose the most appropriate actor for the movie, even though he is a great actor nonetheless.
Indeed, the ending is absolutely emotional! Still, it made me happy and kind of satisfied.
How did you react to Death telling what would happen in advance?

I had just reading the book this morning and i kind of skip from sleeping to finish it, i like the concept of death being the narrator, kind of sad when someone dies specially when it is dear to you after the bomb like Hans, love his character, poster parents and her friend Rudy and the other but the author here give justice to at least let Max and Liezel met again after and makes you see how's death's perspective on human ( Liezel )the girl in particular, how death see, handle and watches people, do the work that everyone got a schedule of departure from life.
It was suggested to me a month ago but i happen read another Sarah's Key.
I think i like this book more sad yet it makes you understand life, like you are afraid of death and might hate it but it is just natural happening to meet your ending somehow.
