Hi guys. This one broke me.
Really difficult song to analyze in one take on a second (if you count the actual track reaction) listen.
Far too many time sig changes and very note dense.
Can't wait to transcribe some Neil and attempt a cover when I get some time.
So yes... disclaimer. I realize this isn't an exhaustive breakdown of the song. Hope you dig it regardless!
Neil Peart/Rush Playlist! ua-cam.com/play/PLqspKksRqaUVia4e736aSQdeyr_KIN-hI.html
I love that he broke your brain. What is cool is that in their final tour they played the anthology in reverse and ended with their earliest stuff and he reverted to his old kit as the show progressed. INteresting note is that "Tom Sawyer" was one of his most difficult drum parts due to the physicality of how he played it. There are some cool documentary pieces where he explains this difficulty.
This is a typical Rush song that trying to dissect in just one listen is like going to a Calculus equation to solve with just a basic math foundation to work with. There is so much and takes multiple listens to see both the genius in what they are doing and just how much is put into the song
@@scottshields113 100% Scott!
@@bryanedmonds5943 Can't wait to dig into all that stuff Bryan!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums I'm paraphrasing but he said that he played full power from start to finish on Tom Sawyer. It has 4 of his most iconic air drum fills that everyone knows.... When I say everyone, I mean except Kiwis!!!😆
The “Natural Science “ drum fill has been my absolute favorite NP fill since I heard it 40 years ago !!!
Don't forget about the end of Lock And Key.
I am 53 and a drummer , learnt so much from this educated humble man . I cried when he went.
46 here ... cried myself, we lost one of the good ones
49...same here gentlemen. Still tough to accept. RIB-Rest in Beats Professor.
Neil Peart's prodigious talent was rivaled only by his prodigious humanity and equanimity. His body of work - music, lyrics, books, interviews - are the measure of a life well lived, for which he justifiably holds our love and respect. And yes, I am paraphrasing his lyrics from "The Garden."
Great analysis , Andrew. Your enthusiasm is contagious! Thanks. Rush represents the apogee of progressive rock music. We shall not see their like again.
When I was 15 my dad tried to tell me that NP was the greatest. I dutifully ignored him. I am much older now and what I can say is you can teach an old dog new tricks. The man is a weapon. Great as always Roons.
If the gun was to my head and had to pick a single favorite Rush song it would be “Natural Science”. By far one of their greatest masterpieces, but yet aren’t they all. Watching them live can’t be expressed in words how amazing Rush really is. He is the reason I took up the drums.
R.I.P. Mr. Peart You are and will always truly be my drum hero!!!
Love the look on his face.
Neil is crisp and clean.
RIP super stud. The professor.
RIP
Even more amazing that Neil was 56 friggin years old in that show. All hail Peart. We’re not worthy.
Yes a 3 hour concert at that age and keeping up the energy the whole time ,
There are so many drummers I admire. With there own style and sound.
But Neil, he’s just different… I can’t even explain.
RUSH for that matter is just a different kind of band. Truly one of a kind on so many levels.
And after all that musicianship, all that talent, all that work to produce such amazing drumming performances, lest we forget, the poetry being sung is all him as well. Breathtaking. Cannot believe all that talent, humanity and intelligence will create no more. Thank you Neil for all you gave me.
9:43 is another trademark Peart lick, that triplet hemiola down the toms.
Please dig "Subdivisions." Not only some of Peart's most relatable lyrics - an outcast/weirdo anthem - but one of his most meticulously arranged drum parts. Rarely if ever did he hit all the high points of prog chops, head-bobbing groove, and radio-friendly accessibility in one track. It's made for radio, despite the fact that if you analyze it, you quickly realize that it is a Swiss watch of a song.
Sounds awesome Joe.
And agree on the trips!
I started playing the drums back when I was seven years old and today I am 55.... I started playing the drums because of the inspiration that Neil Peart gave me when I was a young man... To me, there is no one that can touch Neil on any day of the week on a set of drums and in my own opinion he is the best drummer of all time and never will we find such a musician of his level and skill of timing or caliber ever again.
What he composed and how he grew with that and played them, still blows my mind, his attention to detail to listen to
Love the passion guys! And the respect this band has among musos
Me too
While he is my favorite drummer/composer of all time we have to acknowledge the insane musicianship of many drummers being on another level compared to Neil
@@michaelcarter8620 you crazy. Name one drummer on another level than the professor?
That is an amazing fill, but I like his last fill in The Camera Eye even more.
And I REALLY wish they hadn’t deleted the “Art as expression...” verse later in their career.
Yes, The Camera Eye fill is golden!
You’ve gotta hear the 3 drum fill sequence in By-Tor and the Snow Dog, absolutely incredible
One writer, describing why Neil might have been some sort of alien, used THAT fill as an example ;)
Sub-di-visions. That would be a great song to react to. The evolution of Neil into the 80's. Subdivisions.
Thank you Enrique!
Yeah it’s a great composed drum piece
+1 for 'Subdivisions'! Another great example of seamless time signature changes and also the polyrhythms between his drumming and his mates' instruments, plus Geddy's quick switches between bass guitar and synth 😀 Also definitely one of their easier accessible songs to anyone new to this style of Music 🙂
Yes! Another example of a song that sounds "simple", or "for the radio", and then you hear the isolated drums and your like, "well, clearly, I don't know what the hell I'm actually hearing ".
@@jonnyyen7169 - Yes, exactly! 😀 Also, I personally reckon Neil's drums sound the best on 'Signals', the album 'Subdivisions' is on 🙂
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR!
With heart felt admiration and sincerity!
Gary
A man such as Neil Peart has soooo many iconic drum fills, but...
the one that made you stop for a double take, that one is my favorite. 30+years ago I bought the Rush drum book and went in search of THAT fill. To this day, every time I hear it, it's like the first time all over again.🥁🎶🖤
Natural Science is my favorite rush songs. Trippiest lyrics EVER. Period.
Precision - and live! Something so cool about listening to another musician bestow accolades on someone I've admired for 35 years. Another great video. Thanks for posting!
My absolute pleasure
Always fun watching your Rush reactions. 😊 Great watching you get to know Neil and Rush. They are all so extremely talented. Neil's contribution to Rush has truly been a gift to the world, minus New Zealand. Until now 😊
HAHA Correct!
What a great way to describe Neil. "I think he just broke my brain!"
"Not a perfect isolation..." I prefer it that way. This was way more interesting than when you have that "perfection" you speak of.
Also have a look at MISSION from the same show SNAKES AND ARROWS TOUR, a beautiful underrate song with another one of Neil's all time greatest drumming performances, it also has a great drum camera video. Best wishes from the UK.
Thanks Philip!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums mission
The initiated Rush fan knows, especially drummers, that Rush does a lot of stuff in 7/8, 6/8, and 5/8. This song features classic Rush 7/8, and 6/8 and of course common time. They have a way of organically playing odd time without it feeling like odd time. A lot of groups of 4 and 3 to make 7, amazing feel! Seamless!
Neil has a habit of breaking everyone's brain!! (and that's just with his drumming - his lyrics tend to do the same - he makes you think in many ways!) He is an absolute MASTER of his craft!
So many incredible songs to check out.
Subdivisions would be top of my list. 2112 would be next.
Keep them coming Andrew! I love this format of reacting to the song, then seeking out the isolated drums (where applicable). Cheers!
Totally Darren!
That fill is an 8th note build up to a flam tom burst with a high hat punch followed by a descending flam tom fill in 6 or simply put, a triplet flam pattern down the toms. Then they go back into 4 to cue the guitar solo. Prior to the fill explosion it was simply a double ride pattern split between the high hat and the ride in 7/8. Neil uses the double ride pattern in a lot of songs, especially when they are grooving in 7/8. Subdivisions on Signals is a perfect example. Holla!
Neil was totally awsome .Loved your expert break down of the preformance including going back and slowing it down for us none drummers thanks stay safe.
Likewise Wayne. Take care my friend
Rush gave us all so much enjoyment throughout the years all three men are giants!
Very fun song to learn and play! Learned it back in the 90s ! RIP Neil!
I played along to RUSH on drums 1978 thru 1982..that break broke my brain too 🤣
Yes Tim LOL
Hey Andrew, I appreciate your new interest in Rush, having grown up in the 70s Rush was a big part of Canadian culture…I’m a drummer and honestly my influences didn’t lean toward a drumming style like Peart, I was into drummers like Danny Sapherine, Steve Gadd, John Bonham, more free flowing styles…but now I still listen to classic Rush and I’ve learned a deeper respect for what Rush accomplished as a band, I remember when Permanent Waves came out, it blew me away!..especially Natural Science, I believe they were way ahead of the time, so thanks for your channel, I love your outlook on music and drumming!…all the best
This song was a good demonstration of smoothing over the odd signatures and making it all flow seamlessly while giving the rest of the band a constant marker for the timing of the song.
This ^
Hey Andrew. Please check out La Villa Strangiato. It is one of my favourite Rush tracks. It is an instrumental that is signature Rush. Time changes that is always Rush. I am a Canadian living in the US now and like your introspective of how good Neil really is.
I've done it!
That fill was my ring tone for years. So good.
Yes, Natural Science is heralded as an amazing performance by Neil!! And this performance is slower than when they took this on tour when it came out.
I've really been enjoying your introduction and learning about Neil. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, will do!
That moment from “jaws” is so funny
HAHA Jason. Tried to capture my feelings lol
Even sheriff Brody was impressed!🤣
Amazing drummer. I love his drumming on the "Digital Man"
That right there @6:54 . . . was a "1979" moment, that I didn't discover till I bought the album in 1981 _after_ buying "Exit... Stage Left", "Signals", and then going backwards in their catalogue. Changed my life a 2nd time, the 1st; Kansas - "Point of Know Return" album in 1977, it started me on my Progressive Rock journey and realized at 14, what music could be. Natural Science & "Jacobs Ladder" are my fave deep cuts on this album next to "Freewill" being one of the singles, but Alex's solo in the track is my all time favorite (and what Geddy plays on bass, and the Professor goin' NUTS on the drums _during_ the solo!).
Yes, that fill is just transcendent. So unexpected, cool, well crafted, tasty, just ahhhh!
yes the Natural Science fill is one of Neils signature fills I spent day figuring that out in the 80's it is one of his fills I can play well, so so glad you highlight that it is great on the album pretty well exact !
I like the explanation you give around 5:15-5:45. There is actually a drumeo clip (about 5 cool things Neil does) which explains the whole playing the beat with the left hand then switching to doing the same with the right hand. The guy doing it totally breaks it down & then plays it sped up. Its so freaking cool. I am a non-drummer but sub-consciously I know neil is killing it even if i cant explain why and when someone informed & skilled pops up to demo it.. well thats a thing of beauty.
Digital man; you have the same isolation version from the same concert. You will love that drum track too
Can't wait!
I was just thinking how I *love* the intro fill of that song! The toms have kind of a 'reverse' sound to them and almost seem to be breathing! Great stuff! 🙂 Speaking of "intro fill", this one's mind-blowing also: ua-cam.com/video/tNit0ifDl8Q/v-deo.html 😄
Listen to Mystic Rythms, there isn't any odd time but as the song builds, Neil adds more and more sounds. He utilizes his left foot to trigger an electronic clap sound. The end result is a very layered drum composition which is highly underrated . Rush has 150+ songs and RARELY does Neil " get in the way" of lyrics or overplayed. 1 of the greatest song composers , in my opinion. It's one thing to replicate his work , inventing these parts is the mastery
I would love to see you react to some King Crimson one day! Bill Bruford is one of the main reasons I started drumming myself. Songs like Starless and Easy Money are among my favorites, and their 80's period had strange interlocking songs in unique time signatures, like the instrumental Discipline. Big fan of your videos by the way! 😁
KC currently have a line-up with *three* drummers, don't they! 🙂
@@mightyV444 Yes! I saw them in 2017 in Chicago. Incredible show.
@@brodyyohai2316 - Good stuff! One of my overseas friends strongly recommended to me only very recently to go see their show if I ever get the opportunity. I'm in NZ, though; And it looks like 'only' the Crimson ProjeKCt (with Adrian Belew • Tony Levin • Pat Mastelotto
Markus Reuter • Julie Slick • Tobias Ralph) has been here in recent years.
Absolutely mind blowing!!!!!
Love natural science! I also love the sound of his kit on this recording; his snare backbeat is outrageous as well! You’ve got to check out hemispheres man!
Yes the kit sounds great!
Yeah Cygnus X-1 Book 1 and then Book 2!
LOVE the reaction Andy, Neil put in so much time and effort to bring that precision and skill to the forefront to every performance, so happy your taking the time to explore his gift to us, your appreciation for him is gratifying to see, THANKS!
Bytor and the Snowdog, experience his speed and precision at 23 yrs old, it was his destination to be #1, very EVIDENT in 1975
Great stuff Paul! I loved this
It delighted me watching you react to this.
I've been a Rush fan for decades, so I have to warn you if you're just getting started: prepare to spend a lot of time between a good pair of headphones. I wore out cassette tapes back in the day with this band.
Have a look at one of Neil's final shorter solos in the middle section of the instrumental WHERES MY THING, HERE IT IS live in Dallas, the instrumental starts with some great bass playing by Geddy Lee . Best wishes from the UK. Ps Have a look at STEVE VAI, NOW WE RUN, with an amazing performance from drummer JEREMY COLSON, it's not a Neil peart size drum kit, but he can certainly play it.
Thanks Philip!
Neil, rip. He is like a perfect machine
I soooo miss Neil😔. Thank you so much for highlighting Neil’s amazing drumming!
The best drumming I've ever seen
I really enjoy the channel and would love to see your reaction to By-Tor and the Snowdog from Rush's Fly By Night (studio) album and the live version on All the Worlds a Stage. This was Peart's first album with the band and it has some amazing drum fills in it.
HOW DID MISS THIS?! This is one of my all-time favorite Rush songs, and one of my favorite drum parts from any drummer, period! Liked the video before I even watched it!
Neil's perfect timing and the flow he maintains through his fill-in sections can be taken for granted after DECADES of listening to Rush. A good analysis like this gives jaded listeners a fresh look.
Rush neophytes should take a "deep dive" into Alex's guitar playing. Rush's monster bass & drum sound couldn't exist without Alex's style. Hypothetically, Alex would be the hardest member of Rush to replace. Mike Portnoy or Jeff Berlin could fill in for drums and bass, but you couldn't just take a stock hard rock or metal player like Zach Wilde or Joe Satriani or such to fill Alex's giant oversized clown shoes.
I enjoy watching Neil play these as much as anyone. But the thing that really astounds me is the work that went into creating these iconic drum performances. When you watch the entire Taking Center Stage (an entire concert of isolated drums), you realize how intricate each song is.
I'm sure quite a few drummers could play this song perfectly. How many could play 25+ Rush songs in a row perfectly? Not many. How many could create those parts and replicate them every show? Only Neil. The under-appreciated thing about Neil are the subtle details that you might not notice until you've heard a songs dozens of times.
100% I'm only at the most superficial level at the moment.
25 in a row? One band have the strength to do this. It’s New World Men, a great Rush cover band from Quebec, Canada. The singer...it’s the drummer. Insane.
Andrew as a fan of the Drum Vivisector I suggest you slow it down more often....that was great 👍🏻 your dissection is very enjoyable and enlightening 👍🏻Neil 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦drum god 😎👍🏻🥂
Farewell to the King, the bell tolls for thee. Still crying.
Hello from Canada great videos thanks
Another great video and analysis! thanks Andrew :-)
....and I still can't believe he is gone. I feel that he is still here.......
The most amazing thing for me, is that Neil doesn't play this song EXACTLY as he used to play on the record, but not because he's not capable of anymore... I think is the way he saw that the drum lines would fit better on this song, as he style of playing changed over the years!
The fills are all there, in every live you seek! It's just incredible how he thinks and memorizes all of his drum lines
Awesome. Thanks!
Neil is such a machine.
Speaking of machines...have you reacted to jojo Mayer? His drummer festival 2020 jojo & nerve is just amazing. The fact that he only uses one kick pedal and his hi hat skills.
Can't wait Nic!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums is not exactly my style of music... but his drumming is something completely different. You thought only drum machines could do this
and I meant drumeo festival 2020, oops
I'm glad you're finally getting Rush in your playlist, personally it needs to be on EVERYBODY'S playlist just to set a bar.....and then choose what to listen to afterwards. A few songs go by, and then you crave the power trio for another 3 -4 days straight. LOL. Cheers!
Cheers!
I agree about the drum fill. It is my favorite Neil drum fill. So cool and unique. Great reaction!
Neil Peart Taking Center Stage The Camera Eye... isolated drums. WOW does he hit hard! Its an absolute symphony in motion. Would love to hear your thoughts on this. I think it would break your brain even further.
As someone who has listened to Rush since age 11, the Natural Science Fill has definitely always been notable to me.
N.P...the Pioneer of Progressive Rock Drumming...he has also an great Influence to Mike Portnoy`s Drumming! 👍
All true!
Love the info. Keep it comin'!
He is the PROFFESOR ! RIP Neil :(
I think Neil just broke my brain......welcome to our world!
I totally love how Rush would come out with an LP, go on tour & play their songs note for note live! In an interview one of them said that when they tried to cut some songs down they would end up taking more time vs just playing the whole song. Keep on rocking the Rush. I will suggest to you doing The Necromancer from Caress of Steel. Do the album version or maybe one with lyrics. There is no full, great live recording of it. I had really hoped they would have pulled it from the vault for their 40th anniversary tour, but sadly it's 1 song that I never got the chance to experience live. BTW, YOU WILL BE BLOWN AWAY!!!
Great reaction Andrew,, not sure if anyone commented that this concert version is an edited version of Natural science......check out original version....over 9 minutes of awesome Rush.....including Neil 🥁🥁😀
Warning the more you dig into Neil the more you'll find theirs nobody better !
GREAT!

And thank you too Mr. Rooney
@@itzel1735 good. That means I'm not hallucinating. One day when I buy a drum set, I wont be as good as Neil peart or john bonham 😊
Fantastic break down as always Andrew and it’s awesome watching you react like we all did when first we herd it. Neil’s incredible power gets lost in the shuffle. I think ghost rider he would break a stick every time he played it.
Wow. That's nuts!
I remember seeing an interview with Geddy where he said that Neil left enough broken drumsticks after a day of recording to count as firewood. Those drum heads must be *tough*!
The Natural Science fill in this live take is very nearly identical to the studio version.....amazing.
The GOAT!!!!!!!
He always had the best sounding rides...this Sabian Paragon or his old Zildjian Ping ride.
Great info. Thanks Jason!
@@AndrewRooneyDrums if you want to hear the Ping Ride, the best example I can think of is Neil playing Witch Hunt on the back Simmons electric/Tama hybrid kit. It lives up to its name. I bought my set of Sabians before the Paragons came out and got an AAX metal ride. Sounds a lot like the Ping, but the Ping is just a bit sweeter. Still the Sabian is amazing live (finally got to hear it from audience perspective when I provided them as backline for a charity gig). Cuts through absolutely anything. Here is the video. ua-cam.com/video/-t_CI7NdHlU/v-deo.html
He didn't keep a beat, he composed.
Nice Dave!
I wonder if the sound was Neil’s in-ear monitor mix. I’ve heard that he liked drums, sequencers and anything that gave him a timing reference loud in his mix and everything else underneath
For your personal entertainment. There is a DVD Neil Peart put out called A Work in Progress. He breaks down his equipment, and how he prepared and put his piece to the Rush puzzle together for the Album Test For Echo album. I say for your own entertainment, because as a drummer I think you'll find it informative. I love it, but it might not be enjoyable to some viewers.
P.S. This was also when he went "back to school" to work on his technique with Freddy Gruber.
Thanks again for your breakdown!
Take care ✌
Thanks so much Rick!
Your discussion of the left vs. right backbeat was fascinating for me, a guitarist (i.e. non-drummer). That's the kind of stuff that us amateurs don't understand whiteout your help.
I seem to notice that he is double footing the bass drum more in this live track than in the studio version though.
Temple of syrinx live in rio that was great too
That fill really is one of his biggest moments!
They have a instrumental called "Leave that thing Alone" that has the same idea. The band stops for a incredible drum fill! You should check that out as well!
Sounds great Cristiano!
may have already been said but would love to hear you analyze any song off of Test for Echo. Neil went "back to school" and took drum lessons and sort of revamped his own playing style. The results are obvious and very different, circular in nature. Thanks for doing these. I feel like a proud papa talking about his kids with a friend. :)
Remember Neil is no kid here.
"Most Endangered Species, the Honest Man"- Neil Peart
Thanks for the tip!
The man is a goddamn Metronome
You's be hard pressed to find a Rush album without at least one song where Geddy and Neil don't lock in together, and not just on the bass drum. There's a bunch I can think of where Neil does a fill and Geddy mimics it on the bass.
Yes, they're great at that 🙂 Alex joins in sometimes, too! Think 'Spirit Of Radio' in the intro and again towards the Reggae ending 🙂
His "crisp" snare sound.... This tour was the Snakes and Arrows tour. There's a great documentary on the making of Snakes and how Neil got his drums to sound so good on that record. ua-cam.com/video/pClv4YXVDSo/v-deo.html
I love all the comments. Rush fans know their stuff.
I read all of them, don't always get a chance to reply... But I appreciate all the feedback!
This is great! Check out Darren King of mutemath Reset is a great one to check out. Another great well rounded musician.
Thanks for the tip Tim!
To look at a more "rock band" set of songs, I'd suggest something off Counterparts. Animate, Alien Shore, and Leave That Thing Alone, are three of my go to favorites.
