I had similar issues. Solved my problem by editing from the external OWC Envoy Pro 2TB SSD. Now I can edit 4K vids up to 30 minutes in length without the need for proxy or optimized video.
@@dylanjohndickerson oh wow mate!! Bali is such an amazing place. If you make it to Sydney, canberra or Melbourne let me know and I’ll show you around!

Hey John , Love from India ❤ I have a Question, when i Connect my T7 SSD to Edit Direct From FCP in my Macbook Air it Does not Appear in the Device Section (but the T7 is Working properly)where i could import my Media ..
Always transcode to proxy for larger projects. Optimzed media doesnt make sense for me because of filesize 😊 and you can make proxy timeline and edit on a other mac massive loads of files
@@dylanjohndickerson Oh right wow thats quite the mix. I was born in Sydney, Australia but both my parents are Greek. Just a suggestion as a fan of your channel. I would love to see a video showing all your gear. But other than that keep up the awesome content. :)
hei, I'm used gimbal to shoot vertical, put it on my Fcpx then the shaky appear, but when I transcode optimized media, the shaky was gone, can you tell me why?
@DylanJohnYT, are you impacted by the crashing and Viewer issues in FCP v.10.6.7? Those of us lacking a Time Machine backup and running Apple Silicon are just about dead in the water.
Fortunately, I never update immediately. I'll usually wait a couple months. Unless of course, it's some big update that needs to be featured on my channel.
I wish that if you’ve already accidentally selected a range to export while still in proxy mode then you’re prompted to export in original quality it would keep the range you’ve already selected. As annoying as NOT being able to rename your colour corrections.
Went to play 120fps h.264 Sony footage in 10.6.6. Found that it won’t play. And FCPX wouldn’t create optimized or proxy versions. Had to convert to ProRes using EditReady.
Another very useful video! Thank you Dylan! :) You are the best! 🙌 Especially that I just invested in a V90 Sd Card to be able to shoot in 4K. But as I am real beginner, I don't know what file format to shoot (XAVC HS 4K? XAVC S 4? Apparently with the V90 SD card, you cannot shoot in XAVC S-I 4K) and which record setting is best. 😅 I keep exploring on UA-cam to find an answer but if you have got one and that it doesn't take too much of your time, I would love to hear what you think is best. Have a nice day
Hey Flo! So sorry for the delay. I've been burying my head in this course I'm creating. So that's a tough one. I know a lot of people shoot XAVC HS 4k. Don't quote me on this because I'm not 100% confident, but I think XAVC HS is a more compressed file format, so smaller files with decent quality. I shoot XAVC S which I think is bigger files, but a bit more quality. HOWEVER, I could be wrong. XAVC S-I is the most uncompressed out of all of them. So big files but the best quality. To be honest, I think XAVC HS is the best option from what I remember because the difference you're going to see between that and the S format is so minimal, but you save space with smaller files. Once again, don't quote me on that 😅 You might have already found the answer by now though.
@@dylanjohndickerson Thank you sooooo much for taking the time of such an extensive answer. You are perfect ❤ I have chosen XAVC S 4K. I have read it is best to avoid recording in HS (because even though the files are quite small, it is a pain in the ass to edit). And I have selected the highest bit rate 100M 4:2:2 10bit (because I have read that this will make you a high quality video while keeping your files size from being too large). I am so happy with my Sony Fx30, especially now that I have invested in a lens Sigma 30mm f1.4. Need to binge watch your latest video! Sending love from Belgium! :)
@@FlorenceRobbiano It's my pleasure! Happy to help 😊 Those sound like the exact settings I shoot in actually haha. And I'm stoked to hear that you like the FX30. Have fun creating with it and enjoy your weekend ☀
So I had issues at first. Check this out. M1 iMac. I was always using optimized and proxies. Had constant issues. It’s the m1 iMac 8cpu 8gpu 16gb ram. Somebody told me to just import my media and DO NOT optimize and DO NOT proxies. I was baffled by this, as I assumed my computer would have a much harder time. It has been a night and day difference. My library size doesn’t get bigger and I can pretty much start editing right away.
I usually don't make proxies unless I need to. If I find my computer is struggling, then creating the proxies makes it run much smoother. Interesting that it's the opposite for you 🤔
What form do you prefer when going into the color grade portion of your workflow? I feel like the poor quality affects HOW I color grade, because it’s hard to tell if the image is crappy from the proxy file or if I just did a shitty job with the grade (esp when it comes to sharpening). What do you think?
Hi Dylan. I'm having trouble seeing my 10-bit 4:2:2 XAVC-HS 120fps footage on FCPX ever since the update; it just turns black... Do you have the same issue?
A few plugins used in the tutorial ⬇
