This is the clearest the camera and sound mixing have ever been
“but if i was ever going to be trapped in a closet again this would be the perfect closet to be in” oh god i love her sfm
She/Her!! :) I love her too! Make sure to check out her first two movies (Senorita and Apparition) on the Criterion Channel and her third film (Lingua Franca) on Netflix!
@@psycane8462 omg yes!! just watched her short film Shangri-La a few weeks ago and she's truly a talent. looking forward to watching her feature films!!
@@chrisprime9601 She’s not, & frankly, no one asked you.
😂
"she"?
LOL
Thanks for inviting Isabel on, Criterion crew! This was a great episode! Isabel’s idea of blindly picking one of the movies out of all the phenomenal ones that are there was brilliant!
0:13 Age of innocence
0:33 Woman in love
0:48 The cranes are flying
1:08 John Cassavetes five films box set
1:30 Black narcissus
1:55 Agnes Varda box set
2:25 Quadrophenia (blind pick)
2:38 Mishima life in four chapters and Dazed and confused
She's lucky to be seeing Mishima for the first time, incredible set design and imo Schrader's masterpiece.
Don't forget the brilliant and iconic score by Philip Glass.
Her voice is pure ASMR.
lol really? For me exactly the other way around 😁
Wow, what a great set of picks. Definitely the random pick-one-with-your-eyes-closed move should be a new convention of the genre - should be mandatory in all future #CriterionCloset video editions. Thanks Isabel!
Woah, its Jenni Olson.
I was going to comment the very same thing! Really fun concept and I think very much in the spirit of the Criterion closet pick series, part of which is exposing yourself to different realms of cinema.
I love that Isabel randomly picked out Quadrophenia, one of my very favourite films, hope you enjoy ✌
A perfect blend of old a new. One of the most promising new filmmakers in a collection of some of the greatest older films ever made
The Cranes Are Flying is so beautiful is so many ways. A fantastic Russian film that somehow managed to escape the authorities and even get away with a quip or two about the fervent Russian nationalism and control of the masses during times in which it is set. The symbolism in the film is sublime. Tatiana Samoilova in the lead role fills the screen with her radiance, beauty and infectious enthusiasm. Even when at her lowest ebb she later finds joy and hope. A romantic film, not quite like Ballad of a Soldier although the presentation and visual styles draw some parallels. For those who are fans of the actress, the lesser known but brilliant The Letter Never Sent is a thrill. It was also released on the Criterion Collection. Whilst writing about Russian film's 'Ivan's Childhood' is a must see. Some of the most beautiful kaleidoscopic filming I have ever seen when the boy looks back to his time with his beloved mother, and on the other hand some very gripping, grim scenes will tear at your heart. The way war is portrayed in this film from a child's perspective is very engaging although one could argue Ivan is no child. That was stolen from him. Three Russian films (The Cranes Are Flying, Ballad of a Soldier, and Ivan's Childhood) all set in times of war (which was near constant in the twentieth century) as a trio these movies provide the viewer with some interesting similarities. but more with different angles of focus and messaging. For anyone wishing to try another I would suggest 'The Thief', although not part of the Criterion Collection, it is beautifully shot and although critically acclaimed upon release seems to have dropped off most people's radar.
Top 5 most charming closet picks
Who's your top 5
Jeez. The potent prejudice in these comments is baffling. It's 2021!
Current year!
Probably nobody in Criterion would read this, but I'm crossing my fingers to see Soy Cuba in Blu-ray for later in this year's announcements
Didn't Milestone do a blu ray of it last year?
My friend, you're not the only one.
Would be incredible in 4K
Lingua Franca is really good and Isabel is very talented! Looking forward to her future projects ❤
I was so lucky to see Isabel Sandoval's 'Señorita' here in London last night followed by a very special Q&A that followed. It was my first of her films that I have seen and I loved it and feel lucky that I have so many of her films to look forward to. Having recently seen a lot of Wong Kar Wai's films this summer, I was so happy to hear that she loves his work and is influenced by him.
I desperately need to see The Cranes are flying! Very good picks!
Genuinely several of my favourite movies of all time there. Her Sight & Sound poll was great as well.
Honestly one of the best criterion closet vids! Love your work Isabel!
The cranes are flying in a single word would be jawdropping. The camera work its absolutely beautiful.
daisuke beppu deserves to be in that closet
Very funny that you mention that since he just so happens to have his own makeshift Criterion closet
He doesn't need to be in the closet since he has everything in there anyway.
Oh my god she saw a screening of the devils? Luckyyyyy
She's an absolute delight!
Omg that's hilarious Quadrophenia is such a great film (and I'd forgotten the title before this video)
As a trans woman in the film industry- I love you girly!
Isabel is so gorgeous! Her dress is so perfect! Great picks and a great video!
Goodness I wish her films prior to Lingua Franca were available on a streaming service
I was watching a lot of videos about movies and was struggling with my feeling that film is often perceived as a more masculine hobby, so I wanted to watch some of these Closet videos to see other women who love the same kind of movies that I do, and as a trans woman, I was so happy when she made that joke at the beginning, that was exactly what I needed rn :)
She is stunning
I'd love to see Lingua Franca someday.
Finally, a more purple LUT
Mandatory like and comment for the love of Isabel.
never thought I'd see the day where a Filipina gets into the Criterion closet
Why not?
*Filipino 🙄
Lav Diaz should be in the closet, hopefully they restore, Evolution, and Batang West Side
@@citizenfour9622 ahhh, the classic homophobic comment I've been waiting for.
Great picks. I never heard of her, I really want to watch her films now.
Two of her films are streaming in the Criterion Channel. Her other film is streaming on Netflix (US).
@@chrisprime9601 Trans women are women.
@@chrisprime9601 Yes, she was born male and her chromosomes are male. That’s her body’s biological sex. But her gender, how she feels in heart and mind, is female. Thus she is a transgender female.
@@chrisprime9601 troll. How many other channels do you have to give yourself likes?
@@chrisprime9601 I’m not triggered. I’m also not a lefty. Good bye.
Any chance bringing in any films by Lav Diaz, like Batang West Side and Norte, the End of History for example
LOVE YOU ISABEL
Quadrophenia, what a great movie to pick at random!
I can still remember the inhuman noises I made at 17 when it dropped into the closet
I will do one of these one day.
How do I join the film club?
I’d like to see Will Self on here
real good taste
omg she mentioned The Devils. A film that needs to be in the collection but WB sucks :/ Criterion please bully them into letting you release that masterpiece lol
Unironically...The room belongs in the criterion collection.
i love you isabel
Never judge a film by its cover!
❤️❤️
0:08 😂
All you transphobes in the comments need to add Paris is Burning and some Almodovar to your Criterion collection.
Good video
She’s beauty, she’s grace.
She? He-> She.
@@chrisprime9601 You're spending an unhealthy amount of time worrying about this
@@matthewjames3637 That's not a retort of the facts though, now is it? That's the language of losers: shame, insults, guilt, need to be right. Show me your science, soy!
@@chrisprime9601 So the science is that sex and gender are not the same thing. Here's the WHO's view which is the most widely accepted among academia to my understanding www.euro.who.int/en/health-topics/health-determinants/gender/gender-definitions
@@Matt-ww3nf No, the science is that a man is not a woman. Period. Splitting hairs between "sex" and "gender" is how you people attempt to gaslight the public. What is on display there is a man in a dress, whether you like it or not. Deal with it!
The very 1st time we met I was a icepick until you follow ur ordinance I words are not urs unless you Obadiah, (dats dad oliv&Olivia aka sug&dad)Chad&Aldy&Ethel Lee Lewis their backkkk
I'm betting she won't have liked Quadrophenia.
Why?
I don’t care about the backstory of the human in this closet what I care about is! TH shelves go down to the floor and how high is the ceiling that is all I want to know otherwise this closet of a few books is not enough.
M/W
Her voice
I'm pretty sure it's because she has an accent and is feminizing her voice (or because of HRT that's just her natural voice while speaking English) which usually is very hard to do at the same time.
so cute
she's Trans and has a thick Filipino accent.
@@PlanetXerox her filipino accent is not that noticable
@@liamjones-tran6179 HRT unfortunately doesn't do much for feminizing voices
69 downvotes.....gotta few more haters than usual lol
ugh.
First 6 seconds and I already can't watch
Why?
Same! 🤣
Sounds like a you problem
Transitioned? Really? This is a man in drag.
What benefits you from saying something awful like that? Other than the fact that I totally disagree.
@@Meesterlijker It is impossible to transition from one gender to another, literally impossible. Transitioning is really just cosmetic surgery, if that. Very often it is just a man dressing up as a woman. It is a fantasy and I refuse to buy into it.
@@penguinegg01 to you it can be fantasy, but to them it's identity. To refuse someone's identity shows a severe lack of compassion. Why wouldn't you let them be who they wish to be?
@@Meesterlijker Because it's an illusion and nothing more. Why we should buy into other people's illusion baffles me. Watch this and see what I mean.
ua-cam.com/video/q0DT1aBHheI/v-deo.html
and you look like you are melting in your profile picture, but you don't see anyone bitching about that
She sounds like a guy who is trying to make a woman voice.
