It’s based on a true story but they did take some liberty

The strategy they used was called a Phalanx. You fight in a row and when you get tired, the guy behind you steps up and you go to the back of the line. It was a very successful strategy back in the day. This was based on a real battle and it set the course for world history because the Greeks ended up prevailing.

I was deployed when I saw this. Imagine seeing this in a mini theater full of soldiers. The energy was insane!

Some actual real, historically documented quotes in the movie:

As a person of Greek ancestry, I knew all about Leonidas and his 300 Spartans! At a very young age from my parents and my grandmother. Watching this movie, which does take liberties but has a basis for history really got to my heart and soul because of my heritage!

This story is literally one of the events that forms part of the mythos of western civilization. Every professional soldier for the next 2300 years is aware of the stand of the 300, much like Horatius at the Bridge, and Cincinnatus at the Plow. The quote "Go tell the Spartans (passerby) that here, obedient to their law we lie", and "Come back with your shield or upon it" (meaning come back victorious or don't come back) are also historical quotes.

300 is based on a real event. The Battle of Thermopylae was fought during the Greco-Persian Wars in 480 BC. The type of soldier portrayed in the film is known as a hoplite. They were lightly armored soldiers that could move swiftly from place to place. The fighting formation they use in the film is called a phalanx formation. Usually the formation is a square, but in this case, the terrain allowed a straight line with the mountains covering their flanks.

I was amazed at how this movie literally brought the graphic novel source material to life so perfectly.

The passage of Thermopylae (that literally means "Hot Gates") doesn't exist anymore since the mud deposition made by the Spercheios river moved the beach and the sea a few kilometers away. Near Thermopylae, next to the national road connecting Athens to Thessaloniki there is a memorial statue of King Leonidas and his soldiers with an inscription saying:

I am so stoked you guys picked up on that look between Leonidas and the Queen before he kicked the emissary into the pit. Lots and lots of people miss it - bu it is absolutely critical to understanding the relationship. He didn't ask her permission - but he wanted to double check that he was not blinded by ego or anger. She acted as his "sanity check."

They essentially saved the world back than in that battle of Thermopylae. It's amazing the ripple effect Leonidas created.

They were not only trained to fight but to banter as well. So, picture "rap battles"... but with Spartans.

When Leonidas tells Ephialtes that he wished for him to life forever it wasn’t him being forgiving or generous. It was a huge diss. Growing old was considered a cowardly life as it means you did not die in battle with honor. Also, he knew that it would be told forever that he betrayed the Spartans and his name would be tarnished for all time. Ephialtes looked upset in that moment because he knew he would never been seen as a hero instead he would be known as the traitor and coward.

To give you an idea of how badly Xerxes was defeated in real life, he was carried to Greece and had to walk back to Persia.

This movie to me teaches us the value of sacrifice. Leonidas knows that he can't defeat the Persians with just 300 soldiers. So he did what any leader would, lead the defense of Sparta in hopes to inspire other states to stand up and fight the Persians. Also his sacrifice weakend the Persian army as Xerxes lost a large number of troops. Leonidas' sacrifice united all of Greece to stand up fight.

Fun fact since you're a track coach.. when she's talking to the council at near the end and she's talking about the Battle of Marathon and how Xerxes father tried to take over Greece at the Battle of Marathon a few yrs earlier , well during the battle one of the general sent a soldier back to Athens to warn them and he ran and it was exactly 26 miles from the Battle of Marathon to Athens and that's how we get running a marathon 26 miles.. he ran 26 miles and a myth is that right when he got there he warned them and he died from exhaustion cuz he didn't stop.. but that's how we got running a marathon and that's how a marathon is 26 miles so just a little fun fact since you're a coach but you might have already known that I don't know but that's where it came from

The year this movie came out our coaches took our entire football team Varsity - Freshman to watch it in theaters. Our O-line coach told us we had to be like the Spartans a single impenetrable unit. This movie pumped us up so much we would watch it before our games. We even took the “What is your profession” and made it our own. This movie has a special place in my heart and the fact that it’s kick ass but can make anyone shed a tear is that much better.
