Can Kharaa Survive the Cold in Below Zero?
Вставка

- In today's short discussion video, we'll be talking about one of the most common arguments in regards to how Sector 0 in Subnautica: Below Zero managed to survive the kharaa outbreak. I'll present arguments both for and against the "cold" theory so you guys can form your own opinion on the matter.

I'm at the dentist getting fillings done right now, and this video really helped to relax me.
Thanks, Bacon.

Kharaa Theory: It's Alien Fish Herpes.
That's pretty accurate yeah :D
But that's just a Theory, A SUBNAUTICA THEORY. Thanks for watching.
Considering it’s origins I’d say it’s more space corona
True True.
Kharaa is the underwater Black Plague
Congrats on 25k my dude! You deserve all your success!
Thank you very much :)

You reached 25k. I await for the lore of the FirstBacon, just as you told me in the Pengwing video. Do not break the promised, or action will be taken.
Which is none.

I'll talk about it in the upcoming celebratory stream :)

Hey man, I just wanted you to know that your channel is really awesome. It’s the only one like it that not only fully lays down lore and story elements in a fully coherent way, but also theorizes and speculates at possible connections. I already loved this game and you’re videos give me a whole new appreciation for it, and all the other stuff you cover. I never really leave likes on videos just because I usually don’t remember to but you’ve definitely got mine.
Thank you very much for the kind and supportive words! :) Really appreciate it!
I like to think that since there are Precursor bases, they had a way to transport the peepers to the frozen area. So, between a sort of "booster shot" from the peepers, and the fridged cold, the Kharaa was slowed enough that more unique species were able to build a resistance to the bacteria.
Maybe, but the Peepers were trained by the Sea Emperor Leviathan, not the Precursors, so who knows,
Perhaps :) that could explain how the area is alive....though we don't see any regular peepers there.
I thought you meant the sickness “The Cold” lmao The Cold vs. The Kharaa
Haha close :)

Theory: Sector Zero is unaffected by kharaa because the infection can't spread past the volcanic crater due to both warpers and void leviathans keeping the crater isolated from the rest of the world, The frozen leviathan is an exception to this as an animal that's simply too massive for either void leviathans or warpers to keep trapped at the crater. I theorize that the frozen leviathan originated at the crater, and due to dwindling food supplies attempted to migrate to one of the planet's other shallow regions for food only to get frozen, luckily before it had a chance to infect other animals with the bacterium.
I suppose that's possible :) but kharaa also just spreads through open water so idk how warpers or void leviathans could stop it.
@@TheLastBacon Wait seriously? Damn.
....Why'd architects even make warpers then lmao. Like, ah yes let's make huge biorobots with claws for hands to.... Stab bacteria
I just found your channel a week ago and could not be more glad. Happy 25k!
Thank you very much! :) Hope you enjoy the upcoming content!
Out of sudden, through this video, a random thought popped in my mind. What if the big dead creature in the Lost River and the big dead creature in the ice which carries the Khara vacterium are the same species?
Could certainly be :) though the ones in the LR are much older.
@@TheLastBacon and look different though

Do you have a new microphone? This video sounds different, but nice :)
Not new, just trying a new setup :)
It will be interesting to see what scanning the new species in Sub Zero will reveal to us about the evolution of the arctic area. We got a few interesting insights in the base Subnautica game but I wonder if we’ll get some new clues in this game. Though I doubt we’ll get many skeletal remains like in the lost river. With as you said, the frozen leviathan being the exception (if it is in fact dead!)
I'm very curious as well :) hoping to get a clearer picture as more PDA entries get added.
3:40 well yes that would make sense but I have the theory that the frozen leviathan had been travelling and picked up kharra on the way before reaching sector zero
I mean, that's certainly possible, but I think it would still spread it around quite a bit then :)
I wonder if it would say ghost Leviathans have the consistency of jelly..?
Yay another video. (Btw bacon why does your icon look like a cat?)
Not sure actually :) I do like cats tho!

I really like your videos I only recently found you channel and In my opinion I found gold, love your channel 👍
Thank you very much :) you clearly have great taste!
I have learned so much from watching your videos, thank you bacon sir.
Thank you for watching them! :)
Species that are present in the arctic biome but not he equatorial region of the first game, are likely there just because it is their natural habitat, not necessarily because they were killed off in the aurora crash region from Khalsa.
Yep - still doesn't answer how they survived kharaa though :)
Im down to hear both sides even if one side is wrong, reason being because I love debates and hearing how people come to certain conclusions 😂
Yeah absolutely :) It’s definitely an interesting topic to discuss!
Maybe the ecosystem of Below Zero is a closed off ecosystem?
Dont have this game but it looks amazing
as well as the video ;)
Thank you very much! :) The game is really cool!
i once heard a theory that the precursors are the ones who made the planet full of water, this could explain why there is so small amount of difrent fishes, most of them are similar to the ones that live deeper
(i don't know much about the below zero because my laptop have broke a month after the launch)
Who knows :) it's possible that they heavily influenced the planet's climate during their stay!
@@TheLastBacon maybe they arrived much earlier but they drowned the planet for tests and abadoned it shortly after, then some time later they did come back again (1000 years ago)
@@derf5045 Would the Precursors care that much about terraforming planets. They can build their bases to survive nearly any environment, why spend that much effort on a single planet.
@@parceustheawesome1298 i'm saying that they wanted to test their water technology
@@derf5045 Maybe you're right, maybe I am, who knows? I'm just presenting possibilities.

Amazing video as always
Thank you kindly! :)
Haven’t watched yet, so idk if he mentions it, but probably. It can survive in the lost river with no issues. Sure, it’s not exactly freezing temperatures, but it isn’t exactly warm.
Edit: yep he mentioned it
Yep :) definitely a good argument for it surviving!
with the exception of the frozen leviathan, the fauna in sector zero are showing no signs of infection. maybe that's due to the juvenile sea emperors running around.
Maybe - then again those were cut from the final release of BZ and it doesn’t explain how organisms stayed alive without them for 1000ish years :)
Still making outstanding contint, keep it up ;)
Thank you very much! :)
Nice video!
Thank you! :)
Awesome video but i think precursors know if they take khaara at some cold area like Lost river Khaara will be more controled (Khaara wont spread too much)
Perhaps :) didn't help them too much though....
After a few updates a couple emperors have been found around the edges of the map so that might be a reason
Perhaps but those certainly weren't there before of else the precursors would've found them :)
The Last Bacon yeah they are probably the babies of the one in the base game
maybe the pipe system with the peepers in the first game goes all around the world instead of just the crater
Maybe - but then why don't we see any of the base peepers/vents in Below Zero? :)
I'm watching this sitting on a small watermelon float in my bed cause why not
Sounds awesome :)
Love the vids keep making the best videos
Thank you very much! :)
mabey the sector zero used to be as tropical as the crater, long before the degasi crashed. because the frozen leviathan doesnt show any signs of fur on it, and it has probably walked on land for quite some time sincerely it fell into the cave, and if it would have lived on land, (wich would be unlikely but possible.) it needed protection against the cold, and so mabey thats why the leviathan has kharaa. (unlikely theory, but still.)
You could definitely be right :) perhaps the precursors affected the planet's climate?
Or maybe the frozen leviathan came from another area
Bacon finally now do a squid shark one!
I don't think their info is finished yet right? :)
I can't wait until BZ is out for Switch or PS5
I'm sure it will be awesome! :)
My counter counter argument: the frozen leviathan is shown to be alive due to an active blood flow proven by curing it. This means that the leviathan would produce body heat keeping the infection alive despite it being weak to the cold
True :) but also, I just don't believe the bacterium is weak to cold!
What's your favourite leviathan in the games?
Extinct and alive
Alive definitely reaper and dead probably the gargantuan :)
Interesting and amazing vid! Keep it up
Thank you very much for the kind words! :)
People: *Talk about fictional pathogens*
The real and spreading corona virus: "Am I a joke to you?"
Haha not qualified enough to talk about that one :)
I must say I'm in the camp of the people thinking that cold isn't a cure.... I mean it survived everything and if the architects didn't had the idea to freeze it..... jeah they are smart the only misstake they made was not making a low tech signal that can reach ships and warn them when they come close to the planet.....
I'm in that camp too tbh :) there's just too much going up against that theory.
This is a good theory. The fact that most diseases don't thrive as well in the cold is true. But a disease that has destroyed a alien race along with many other things... is certainly something to think about.
Yep :) really makes you wonder how it's able to survive everything the precursors would've inevitably tried.
The Last bacon you sound sick hope you get feeling better
A bit yeah :) probably just a cold, thank you tho!
@@TheLastBacon u r welcome
I think that the cold would not kill it.if it spread across multiple worlds it must have encountered cold temperatures before. I think it slowed the effects greatly.maybe an adult emperor leviathan was there producing the enzyme and then died.the pda said they migrated long distances but we only see the enzymes come from the young.witch must have swam a long way.or born there. baby emperor leviathans there?my question is how did they get there?
Yeah the only problem is that the precursors were clearly in the area, so there is no way they would miss another emperor located there :)
@@TheLastBacon yes. unless they captured it too.and it was in another sanctuary.we haven't seen everything yet though so its hard to figure out why this occurred. maybe the bacterium was contained on that part of the planet
ayy im early its nice to see one of your vids mate
Glad you liked it! :)
This is going to be a theory... but an amalgamation of theories that will seem like tangents. But they are all things to consider.
Well, the Kharaa seems to be like other bacteria where it might not be “killed” in the cold but simply lay dormant in some hosts that you come across even in Below Zero.
And because the natural cure was probably around until the precursors fucked the ecosystem causing it to spread without challenge that’s how it got out of hand. Also it seems the precursors may have got a frozen specimen similar to our huge one. As you could argue the bones in the facility that’s now sunk was a frozen specimen and it’s melted with all its flesh eaten off spreading the virus to smaller fish directly which then spread it to bigger fish.
Evidently the cold doesn’t kill it, but it does seem to halt its progression and without killing it even if the host is dead. Unfortunately if you simply froze yourself with it you’d die. Unfortunately I think that big creature is also dead due to sudden freeze.
It might be evident that Below Zero location is actually a remanence of an ice age. All creatures from that era had the virus and some were immune but introducing ancient specimens caused the dormant kharaa virus to start.
You could very well be right :) bacteria and viruses which have been frozen in ice getting out is actually something that real-life scientists are concerned with.
The Last Bacon
Indeed, I’ll have to join your discord at some point. We can theories together over a nice hot cup of Deep Sea PTSD
Well you got to realize the temputure in the lost river is not as cold as secter zero because that's is = to anarctica
It is about the same in some areas though :)....or at least was a few updates ago.
subnautica below zero is basically greenland but without all the land and the technology and aliens and without the kharaa
Yep :) basically!
When will you make a another episode of subnautica mods?
Probably next week somewhere :)
Okay
Are levithans immune to kharaa
I mean the big boy is infected but the reaper and ghosts dont give a damn
I don't think so....probably just eat a lot of peepers :)
ayy early nice vid mate
Thank you! :)
Put an thermal reactor and read the temperature
I just used the seatruck for BZ and seamoth for base game :)

Is Al-Ans body his original look like? Or is it changed
I'm not sure tbh :)
You made a video about my comment 😉
Hope you enjoy! :)
I think it certainly can survive the cold, but it may just get drastically slowed down
That could explain some things for sure :)
Wait arent there emperor leviathans in below zero? Or are those just place holders? Cause if there are emperor's in below zero they could have cured the disease for other species, thus allowing them to survive. Aswell as the mercenary lady who somehow travels to below zero
Those are likely the children from the original.
Probably the juveniles from the first game indeed :)
@@TheLastBacon Wait, how long has it been since the first game? I thought it was only a couple years or so. How the Fuck did those emperor's grow to fast?
