@shawnsanmiguel9287 dca was originally designed to be a mini California. The wine country, the state fairs, Hollywood etc. But it's evolved since then to Pixar land
I completely agree that the Eastern Gateway project needs to be completed first, in order to free up enough space in the East Esplanade for renovations of Tomorrowland and the Hollywood Backlot.
FreshBaked. David, In early 1954 Walt and 4 other gentlemen met with the Anheim Council. This is what one council member had to say. "Mr. Disney with 4 others showed us some early drawings and 3 or 4 models of a kiddy park he wanted to build. For the whole meeting Mr. Disney stood he never sat down. He laid out and described his plans down to the smallest detail. He answered all our questions without hesitation. Infrastructure, water, electricity, sewage, roading. I learnt so much I did'nt know about Anaheim and I've lived here all my life. Day's later we were still talking about Mr. Disney's presentation, it was a tour-de-force." Lets hope this current and future Disney management can get the job done without cutting corners. Cheers, Chris Perry.
How project priority should look if they are trying to do it piecewise 1. Eastern Gateway 2. Parking lot expansion lands for DCA/DL 3. Hollywood/Tomorrowland remodel/expansions 4. Third gate in the toy story lot this order allows them to first replace lost parking, then increase park capacity before cutting capacity to remodel existing lands. and finally explode capacity with the extra gate. The alternative homerun swing is 1. Eastern Gateway 2. Third Gate & parking lot expansions 3. Revamp Hollywood and Tommowland This requires much more labor but gets a ton of capacity online much quicker
Pretty much, I understand them wanting to stick up for the little guy but Disney pays the bills, as well as because of Disney we get so many of these venues and hotels on Harbor and Katella
We saw the announcement on KTLA this morning and I had to explain and point out, briefly, what and where it was all about to my wife and stepdaughter…telling them I’ve known about this project for two or three years….thanks to you, David. FRESH BAKED!
David do not forget that the 1.9 billion minimum that was promised to be spent has to be used for park expansion and entertainment. That can not include parking structures, hotels or infrastructure. Therefore i would not be surprised if they have more than one project going at the time. I agree that they need to build the eastern gateway and parking structure first. I think that they might focus on building the new shuttle and security area along with the bridge over harbor. They get that done and the old security/shuttle area be demolished and expand DCA even if the new structure is not done yet because no parking spots would be removed. One thing none of us has questioned is the future of the drop off zone on harbor. Is there a possibility of that narrow piece of land to be claimed by parks? If everything is moved to eastern gateway for security it would make sense to remove the drop off zone as well
Every Disney park-Paris, Hong Kong and Shanghai-outside the US can be quickly and conveniently accessed by rail transit with plans for Brightline to include a station at WDW (by Disney Springs) in the near future. I sincerely hope plans for the Eastern Gateway include space that could be converted to a station above or below ground with connections to the LA metro and John Wayne. It would take soo many cars off the already congested roads. One can dream 🤞🏼
I read a news story about this a few hours ago, and turned to Evan and said, “I’ll bet David is working on a video right now.” Thanks for confirming my guess😄
Literally saw the news from someone else on IG and went to check FB’s IG and there was nothing so I was like, “Oh, I bet there will be a video when I get home from work!” 😂
A DVC representative at California adventure told me that if sales for the new DVC tower went well then they were gonna add more DVC rooms for Grand Californian and Pixar Place. So there is definitely a reason they’ve been pushing so much DVC stuff lately
I guess it is becoming more apparent lately that the Disney goal is to make the Disney Experience in the US (hotels and parks) all DVC. 🧐 This new entertainment concept is also being considered at Universal as well. The idea is very attractive because the companies get money up-front along with yearly charges and up-charge options. An ideal business model. Unforntunate for the less rich people.
It makes so much sense to get rid of the Simba parking lot and turn it into an extension of Disneyland. I'm trying to figure out where everybody is going to park though. I'm sure that Disney knows what they're doing with this one! Can't wait to watch all your videos and follow this transformation. It's going to be exciting🥳🥳🥳🥳
Yeah, Avatar is not even an Disney original creation. It's a film from James Cameron, and an over rated one I believe. I'm all for Disneyland Forward but not for Avatar or anymore Star Wars.
Well done David, could this be the beginning of a 20 year series called "Disneyland Forward" I think so. Having minor issues with my USN pension, soon as it's resolved going to join your patreon brother, you're by a mile the best Disneyland/Knott's/Universal VLOG out their. Nameste pal.,.
I watched the entire video for the Anaheim city council meeting. I loved one guy's snarky remark about how if Previous city council wasn't so nitpicky. We would've already have had a fourth hotel
I was up till 2 AM Utah time watching it go down (and boy was I glad I did, it got entertaining at the end). Super excited for the possibilities. Luckily, I'm only 22.
I gotta imagine that the reimagined eastern gateway project, after the city council’s approval, will begin in early 2025 and be completed by summer 2027.
Pandora construction cost in Animal Kingdom was around $500 million. I think $1.9 billion will get you two parking garages, Pandora land, and another land like Frozen or Zootopia.
They bought the Grand Hotel and land next to Interstate 5 and might make an expansion site. Rebuild the Peoplemover into switchable transit cars Or expansion the Monorail for the new park space. Put a raised Monorail station in front of the main Entrance. 10:15
Last month the O.C. Register published a story about the proposed east side parking structure. It will be one of the biggest in the world with 17,600 spaces. More than enough to compensate for losing Toy Story lot, the hotel lots and the employee lot currently on the site.
I absolutely despise the “copy-and-paste” strategy Disney does, primarily attractions based from the Disney Animation Studios movies. I wish they go back to the drawing board on revive some of the cancelled original ideas made by veteran Imagineers. We want to see Discovery Bay/Dumbo’s Circus Land or Tomorrowland 2055 come to Disneyland. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy seeing attractions for families with young kids who grew with the movies of their time, but building massive IP themed lands that are centered around 1 or 2 particular movies very susceptible to being outdated, like Galaxy’s Edge and Avengers Campus. This makes me cautious for DisneylandForward like the proposed Avatar land coming to Disneyland, while they hinted the land would take place in a new setting it’s nothing but BlueSky concept.
I'm all for Disneyland expansion. Not for Avatar theme land though as that's not an original Disney creation (James Cameron creation) and it's based on one movie (and it's sequel I guess) that people might not even care about in twenty years, and hopefully no more Star Wars crap. I never saw the appeal of that film series that so many people are fanatical about.
Dave, Thank you for this excellent report. In your opinion, which of the two parks is more likely to be the first to build a bridge and actually expand across Disneyland Drive? DL or DCA...? Thanks!
Although the Eastern Gateway project today or several years ago will affect or would have affected small or non-Disney businesses along mainly Harbor Blvd, it annoys me that third parties slowed down improvements by 5-10 years due to their belief they had a right to customers lured into Anaheim primarily by "Disney" & not anything else. OTOH, Disney has had years to tweak the basics of DCA (eg, put audioanimatronics in Grizzly River Run, etc), yet they've sat on their hands. Also, if the Disney Co also has been apathetic about buying land like what's now occupied by GardenWalk, they've not helped matters either.
I would bet that Disney would parallel-path construction of the Eastern Gateway with Pandora in the Simba lot. 2 years for the parking garage and 3 years for Pandora (according to Wikipedia, at DAK: Construction on the area began on January 10, 2014,[15] and the land opened to the public on May 27, 2017.[5][16]). I bet they would take the moderate hit in lost parking from Simba to accelerate the ROI calculations for opening Pandora.
Im still hoping for Neverland(with rides). Not getting my hopes up tho. Disney needs to renegotiate the occupancy tax issue. DVC members usually can just stay in a hotel on points. But the DVC villas at the DLH require members to fork up additional cash during their stay(tax). Unlike many other DVC offerings, the tax is not baked into the cost of stay point wise.
David, the Eastern Gateway parking structure. Is that in addition to the Mickey and Friends parking structures? Or would the Eastern Gateway Parking structure replace the Mickey n Friends structures even though they just finish building the addition? Wow, this will be such an undertaking! Thanks David, for keeping us properly informed. Its funny listening to the radio reports, and commentators, telling what they think this will mean. They seem to think and report that next year Disneyland will be expanded, haha.
I feel Disney is selling this to us as all new attractions and lands, but I feel this new zoning allows them to do what Disney wants and that’s most likely hotels, not many new lands. They double dip on park guests if they stay at Disney hotels and not just purchase tickets. It would be nice if Disney offered moderately priced accommodation options, but I want new attractions.
Isn’t Hotel Way that road alongside the Hilton and how you get into it’s parking lot? I don’t see how that’s going to connect to anything. It’s literally just for hotel access.
David are you finally a believer of Disneyland forward? And this is happening in the next 10 years not 30 like u mentioned before! Come on David be optimistic! 😂
You'll need to find the Anaheim equivalent of Bioreconstruct to partner on construction progress videos! You'll have to fly above 3,000 feet over the Disneyland no-fly zone, so you need someone with an incredible zoom lens like Bio uses out of the helicopter. In fact, didn't a heli pilot get permission to do a fly over of DL during the pandemic? I think there's a UA-cam vid of that - you should find that guy!
I have absolutely no interest in anything Avatar related, But I ask the question again - why don't they take just a fraction of their Avatar budget and re-do Tomorrowland?
Same. I'm for Disneyland Foward but not Avatar which isn't even a Disney original creation. The movie is of James Cameron, and I always thought it was an over rated film. Plus I'm tired of the Star Wars stuff, I'm hoping there's no more added Star War lands or themes.
Serious question regarding the parking. I know a second parking garage is needed but the times I’ve gone to Disney and used the Mickey and friends parking garage, they always send us to the other side. I’ve never seen the first half of the garage actually be filled. Can someone confirm if they actually use everything to capacity ???
Could you provide a link to a map of the Disneyland Resort so that people who aren't local can know where the parking lots and streets discussed for Disneyland Forward are located within and in relation to the entire property?
The Olympics are in Los Angeles in 2028 so I assume they want at least something new. What do you think they will prioritize for that if you think they are trying to attract some crowds.
I actually think Disney would want to get things open by 2028 rather than 2029 because the Olympics will be in LA that year and Disney would logically want people to come by saying hey we have new attractions come to Disneyland and they could grab a lot of visitors during the summer of that year. Thats why i also think Disney is trying to get this approved now so they can at least have something open by 2028 doesn’t mean everything could be open maybe like Avatart or Fantasy Springs something like that.
What if they took out all the kid stuff at the pier and put the Avatar ride there? I like WOC, but some don't care. They are talking about changing the name. Honestly, I don't think it belongs because DCA is all Pixar and Marvel now. That pier has the only body of water besides Grizzly peak. 😅
People need to remember what David said, this is for zoning not design. My hope is, the planning and expansion is over a long time. Develop a chunk well and right with a solid budget. Then, do it again. Piece by piece. If it all happens at once, the budget will be stretched and this moment is too important for the resort as a whole to not do it right.
the Parking structure Can easily be done in a year , the reason it took 1.5 years is because of its surroundings the eastern gateway has more space availability for trucks to get in and out as oppose to the Pixar pals was a bit more complicated
"I'll be dead by then..." 😅😂. Tell me about it. Having turned 50 this year and hearing all these new plans for California AND Florida that will most likely be finished in ten years, that puts me at SIXTY! Don't know if I'll be up for it by then. This last WDW trip last year really took it out of me. I needed a vacation from my vacation!
By then Disney will be broken up under antitrust and instead be tearing down Galaxy's Edge, Avengers Campus, and removing the Pixar theming from the pier to avoid the billions in licensing fees it will face for having IPs it no longer owns.
Thanks Scout! Well scooped and reported! I guess they sweetened the Eastern Gateway deal enough to get it through. Or maybe they sneaked it through! jk! This gives you an fun and entertaining playbook for long eons to come! Yay!
Different Councilmembers, Lots Of Cash, oops, improvement to Anaheim, and it will make a better chance of positive growth and great resumes for said Councilmembers! It's a win win win!
I think also Covid and how much they relied on Disneyland to be open and bring guests to Anaheim also played a part. Also, the different way Disney took this time around with a multi-year effort of outreach also helped instead of dropping it all at once and saying, approve this or else.
Do they have to tear down any Harbor hotels? How will Harbor hotel guests access park, staircase up to bridge? Not all of us can stay on property, cost-wise.
I wish that instead of a huge parking lot they’d invest in good public transit so ppl can get to the park without a car! All that land could be used for something else
Disney is planning to build what will essentially be the world's largest parking structure on the east side of the resort. Still, the city of Anaheim would be wise to build something like a streetcar or dedicated bus lane for the 2.5 miles between Disneyland and the ARTIC train station.
Sorry but none of this will be done by Disneyland's centennial. I know because I was there. Time travel is real. Disneyland will look like did for much of the 1980s and early 90s in 2055 so that means no Marvel or Pixar or Galaxy's Edge.
Congrats Dave, on 10+ more years of job security! Lol. FRESH BAKED!
Man this makes D23 a whole lot more exciting! Oh the freaking possibilities!
Right? But I’m sure, it will be anticlimactic like every other year lately:(
Please please please no cookie cutter attractions. This is the original park and deserves more than copy and paste.
Please!
I so agree. No rides that you can find in your neighborhood carnival like some in DCA.
@shawnsanmiguel9287 dca was originally designed to be a mini California. The wine country, the state fairs, Hollywood etc. But it's evolved since then to Pixar land
Yes, this is very valuable land, and we don't need more attractions copied for WDW etc.
We need legendary attractions on par with The Great Movie Ride or Spaceship Earth!
I completely agree that the Eastern Gateway project needs to be completed first, in order to free up enough space in the East Esplanade for renovations of Tomorrowland and the Hollywood Backlot.

Disney needs to build a 3rd park here in Anaheim to make it a week long destination, and take back dominance over Universal and Epic Universe.
How project priority should look if they are trying to do it piecewise
1. Eastern Gateway
2. Parking lot expansion lands for DCA/DL
3. Hollywood/Tomorrowland remodel/expansions
4. Third gate in the toy story lot
this order allows them to first replace lost parking, then increase park capacity before cutting capacity to remodel existing lands. and finally explode capacity with the extra gate.

Wow, I didn't expect a 7-0 vote but that's great. We can only hope they start construction on the eastern gateway sometime next year.
Disneyland Forward is moving…Forward
They would be foolish not to vote yes. Disney fills their tax coffers.
Pretty much, I understand them wanting to stick up for the little guy but Disney pays the bills, as well as because of Disney we get so many of these venues and hotels on Harbor and Katella

If Disney goes all in on this project, it could be absolutely amazing. It will be fun to watch it transform.

A bit off topic, but whatever happened to Cotino? Nobody seems to talk about it any more.

Having turned 50 this year and hearing all these new plans for California AND Florida that will most likely be finished in ten years, that puts me at SIXTY! Don't know if I'll be up for it by then. This last WDW trip last year really took it out of me. I needed a vacation from my vacation!
I’m 61 and I go to Disneyland frequently and Walt Disney World (no scooter) twice a year. You’ll be fine!
By then Disney will be broken up under antitrust and instead be tearing down Galaxy's Edge, Avengers Campus, and removing the Pixar theming from the pier to avoid the billions in licensing fees it will face for having IPs it no longer owns.
Before building that they need to fix Disneyland in south, and there tomorrow land.
And what does this mean a new park Kerstein $200 with five or six rides. Or is it going to be an expansion to Disney land.
How will guests that stay in hotels in harbor blvd or other good neighbor hotels get to the entrance and security? Have they addressed this?
Guess we can call the areas under construction Tomorrowland until it’s complete lmao
Disney needs to hire the universal construction crew!
I just want the Tron coaster at the Disneyland Resort. That is all.
Thanks Scout! Well scooped and reported! I guess they sweetened the Eastern Gateway deal enough to get it through. Or maybe they sneaked it through! jk! This gives you an fun and entertaining playbook for long eons to come! Yay!
FreshBaked! and all kinds of new stuff!
3 years!!
Ok where will parking be?😮
Wonder what changed the councils minds, as they were
really anti-disney for the last 20+ years.
Aka they all got paid off by the Disney company. Money talks. And the Disney company is allot of money 💰
@@randallbrown873 Money doesn't talk with me and won't when I take over Disney and make it great again. Only the "What would Walt do?" mantra will.
I miss the tie and vest look
Avanter will be in california adventure top lot left side already saying it
Do they have to tear down any Harbor hotels? How will Harbor hotel guests access park, staircase up to bridge? Not all of us can stay on property, cost-wise.
Pedestrian bridge
I wish that instead of a huge parking lot they’d invest in good public transit so ppl can get to the park without a car! All that land could be used for something else
Majority of guests are out of town people. Every hotel has a bus that comes every 15-20 minutes and takes you to the resort. Or just call an Uber
What does Disney have to do with public transit. That is the city of Anaheim’s problem.
The vast majority of guests drive cars and need a parking lot. I would be open to giving up on DCA and turning it back into a parking lot.
How much can Disney appeal to those with lots of money...
The more they expand, the higher the prices. When is enough, enough?
Do we really need avatar I’d rather have something else to be honest
Disneyland made Anaheim, Anaheim should have to go to Disneyland for permission for requests and not the other way around.
Its about time the city there is doing something right
I hope they don't make Disneyland into Walt Disney World.
If they use up their parking space there will be more of a congested parking situation won't there?
Disney is planning to build what will essentially be the world's largest parking structure on the east side of the resort. Still, the city of Anaheim would be wise to build something like a streetcar or dedicated bus lane for the 2.5 miles between Disneyland and the ARTIC train station.
Hopefully besides Avatar, they’ll build Frozen as well.
done by disneylands 100th birthday!!! geezzzz I will be 100 also
Sorry but none of this will be done by Disneyland's centennial. I know because I was there. Time travel is real. Disneyland will look like did for much of the 1980s and early 90s in 2055 so that means no Marvel or Pixar or Galaxy's Edge.
