Hakodate Morning Market - Hokkaido, Japan

  • Take a look around Hakodate Morning Market in Japan - including Donburi Alley, fresh Hokkaido seafood and expensive fruit! Then step outside into -11°C and a snowy blizzard!
    Hakodate fish market is right by the station. There are around 250 stalls selling fresh seafood, donburi fish rice bowls, all sorts of Japanese food you might not recognise and expensive fruit! There are also lots of restaurants and places to eat authentic Japanese food. I tried a yubari melon and sweetcorn, and Phil had a salmon, tuna and scallop rice bowl. Hakodate's also famous for crabs, and there are lots of them around the market stalls.

    I could literally spend an entire holiday in that fish market and only leave when the bailiffs come to drag me away :)
    Which might take long - a lot of those bowls were surprisingly expensive, £15 or £20 ones seemed quite common.
    Your "I'll have some fruit" reminded me of when I took mum to a sushi restaurant and she does not like fish, noodles or even rice very much lol
    I had a few chinese house-mates when I was at Uni and one day they returned from a shopping trip (all the way to birmingham). I was alarmed when I
    saw one of their bags moving. "Your crabs and lobsters... they are still alive !" :)
    If you return during the depths or winter (or the height of summer) it might be fun to carry a little digital thermometer with you so that you can report
    what your personal temperature is as the official temps that you get from news sites are (whilst technically correct) different from what
    you might be experiencing :) - that seafront looked a lot colder than -11 :O

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces  5 років тому +2

      That would be interesting, it certainly felt even colder than -11!!! :-) Did your mum stick to edamame at the sushi restaurant? :-) It wasn't particularly cheap at the fish market but I think it's worth it for the experience (even more so if you like fish...!). Phil's excited to go back - the local fish market is now on his must-visit list for anywhere we go in Japan!

    I went to Hakodate's morning market and got the donburi there. It was really delicious. I saw the bowl you got and I think you got the foreigners special. Unfortunately they gave you the "Gaijin" version. Many sushi chefs watch how you eat sushi and determine whether you know how to sushi or not and serve you accordingly. And that's to the Japanese. It can be worse if you're a "Gaijin "(Foreigner) Kinda like if you go to a steakhouse and order a well done steak. They give you the worst cut they have. Me, I eat anything they serve because I know the worse sashimi/sushi there is still better than the crap back home!
