Exploring HAKODATE - Hokkaido, Japan

- Join us around Hakodate - the end of the bullet train line in Hokkaido, Japan, to see one of Japan's top 3 night views at twilight!
It's extremely cold in Hakodate in winter! This was filmed in February in the snow and freezing temperatures. But that didn't stop us taking the tram to explore the Motomachi district, with European-style houses and churches and going on the ropeway up Mount Hakodate to see the beautiful night view. It's best to go at sunset, so you can see the colours and the lights. Then we looked for restaurants in Hakodate and found an amazing curry restaurant called Masala Curris (they have vegetarian curry!). It was delicious! And one of my favourite memories from the trip - walking along the snowy streets at night. It was so quiet, and completely the opposite of Tokyo!

Greetings from Japan🇯🇵
Thank you so much! Can't wait to go back to Japan!
This looks like a really great view definitely worth the effort to get to the front of the crowd thanks for the share 😀🇬🇧🏴
It was amazing (I guess that’s why everyone wanted to take pictures!) 😊
I love the snowy desolation of the back streets. But you could have climbed on Phil's shoulders to get a clear shot of night lights.
That was a magical moment, walking through the quiet streets, that I'll always remember (especially as it was such a contrast to the crowds earlier!).
give the me the curryyy🤤🤗🤪please tell us how to get there exactly like literally coz I don’t speak or read Japanese..... so when we visit Hokkaido, hokkadate will definitely show that little yummy restaurant a whole lot of love
It was so good! Highly recommended! If you search for "masala curris hakodate" it shows you right where to find it. :-)
It sounds like Hakodate was a highlight for you! A really different feel to the other city areas you've been to.
It really was different! I’m not a fan of the cold but it was an amazing experience. But just wait till you see the festival we went to in Otaru... 😊✨
Omg there's so much snow! Last time I was in an area with a lot of snow (Banff), I slipped in front of a lot of other tourists. 😭😭😭
This is definitely on my list when travel opens up!
I'd love to visit Canada one day, the mountains look beautiful! Ice can be a problem, haha! :-)
How much longer to Thursday... Really enjoying this series.
Thanks so much! I spend ages editing my videos so it's really great to know you enjoy them! :-)
I was up there in mid-April 2018. It was still only about 3° the night I went up, but only snow from about halfway up the mountain, none down in the town by then. No festival or anything when I was up there, still super cold and it was mid-week, but even so there were still truckloads of ppl up there! I suspect it’s so well know for being a gorgeous view that it always attracts a crowd :)
I guess everyone who goes to Hakodate wants to see it (both of us included!). The town must get a lot more tourism since the shinkansen line started running!
Great video as always. If I ever go to Hakodate I will have to try that curry restaurant. Looks delicious.
Definitely highly recommended! Hokkaido’s know for seafood too if that’s your thing.
Hokkaido in the summer looks so different than in the winter! Awesome vid!
I'd love to go back one day in the summer to explore the countryside more. Especially Noboribetsu and Sounkyo!
Noboribetsu was super fun! I actually just posted a vlog on it, feel free to check it out!
Probably one of my favourite videos you have done . And I’m exactly the same as regarding visiting places of the tourist radar . Great great video 👍
Ah wow thank you! Looking forward to sharing lots more from snowy Hokkaido! :-)
Lovely video! Now I want to visit Hakodate just to try that curry
Haha same!
I want to go back to have it again!!! Do they do Deliveroo to the UK...? 😝
Your videos are so useful :D I'm in Japan right now and I visited so many places recommended in your content! Thank you for doing amazing job and helping me to organise my trip.
Ah that's so great to hear! Have an amazing time - and have a Fanta Grape for me!! :-)
Cant wait for the next hakodate video!
Glad you're enjoying seeing somewhere different! :-)
@@cakeswithfaces now i have some kind of a glimpse of my trip to Hakodate end of this November thanks to you! Well Mt. Hakodate is in my itinerary too, it seems too many people on top but i think i can bear with the crowds. 😂
@@konkoffee It's still worth going for the view, just be prepared! You'll have to let me know if it's still as busy when it's not snow festival season.
@@cakeswithfaces Alright, I'll let you know.
We don't really like the cold weather but might need to make an exception for Hokkaido! 😁
I’m terrible with the cold too!!! But it was an amazing experience!
That bear mascot looks like a kaiju
Godzilla vs Melon Kuma! :-)
That would make a good Japanese commercial 😊
@@simonskinner1078 Oh m goodness yes! It may have already been done, who knows! :-)
Incredible view , I'll have to do this trip in warmer weather. Going to have to try the Curry.
If you’re going to Hakodate you have to go there!! If I went back to Hokkaido I’d go in summer to see more of the countryside.
i don't really know what it was but those deserted, winter streets at the end - it looked so much like the christmas episodes of a romance anime - toradora or oregairu :). That looked like such a lovely place to visit.
Yes, it absolutely does! It was romantic in a way (if you can get past the snow blowing in your face!!) But thinking back, it's a great memory.
great view from the top of mt.hakodate!
please have fun with the winter trip in hokkaido!
Thanks, I loved it!
@@cakeswithfaces thank you for comment back.
please come back to japan.
and enjoy four seasons.
Oo nice,I think I'll take my heavy jacket if i visit there haha.
You’ll definitely need it! As many layers as you can wear 😝
That was indeed a new sight such quiet streets. At times I do enjoy not being in crowded touristy areas. By the way your hat colour matches your hair's colour quite well, looks good on you. That top view was good but it was so overly crowded. Had similar experiences with places like Himeji castle. One big row from start to end with people. Sure one gets to see all but it does loses some of it's atmosphere I think due to the sheer amount of people at the location. Great video once more :)
Absolutely agree about losing the atmosphere! If you want to see the famous sights there's no other way, but sometimes smaller, less famous places can have a lot more atmosphere - like smaller shrines and temples, and the bamboo garden in Kamakura was so much more enjoyable for me than the famous one in Kyoto.
I've actually had the second best melon pan in Osaka at their Dotonbori location. I think they call it the "second best" because they learned to make it from someone else and that person's melon pan is considered number one! Its called "second best" out of respect. I love your blue hair btw!
Interesting!! And shows how Japan’s culture is so different from other countries, where they’d all be screaming out that theirs is the best!
@@cakeswithfaces Yes!
200👍 already!
I've just watched this at the summer solstice and it was as crisp and refreshing as shaved ice.
Though I fancy leaving it until next April to visit Hokkaido since I think I'll be more comfortable then.
When I booked this trip, it was the middle of the summer heatwave in the UK and it seemed really appealing to go somewhere so cold!! :-)
Love your sailor top!
Thanks! It’s from Listen Flavor, so cosy!
Early! :D love you!
Congratulations!!! 🎉🎉🎉
In Kyoto right now and still enjoying your posts. It's a bit warmer now!
Haha I should think so! Hope the rainy season isn't too bad! Have lots of fun!! :-)
@@cakeswithfaces Hi seen about 5 minutes of rain so far so doing well! Have to see what the next 10 days bring me
@@philmitchell8109 All good so far then, fingers crossed! Have fun! :-)
Nice menu. I've heard that in Japan there's no raita, or perhaps it's very unusual, and I don't see any on that menu.
Thanks for the snow scenes. Just what I need as summer approaches.
Haha, I actually booked this trip during the summer heatwave and it seemed very appealing at that time! :-) There wasn't any raita at that place; I actually haven't been to a proper Indian curry restaurant in Japan because I try and stick to Japanese food - to make the most of the authentic local food! But yes it would be interesting to try, and see if it's different from in the UK.
Hope you get to see snow miku in sapporo. Want to visit hakodate & visit all the locations shown in the Love Live Sunshine anime. They visit various places & cafes in Motomachi btw.
Yes I did see Snow Miku!!! (Coming up in my videos!). I only watched the start of season 2 of Love Live so I hadn't seen the Hakodate episode - just looked it up and it looks exactly like in real life! I love when that happens in anime!! :-)
I am living here at hakodate
A beautiful place to live! But extremely cold, you're braver than me!! :-)
The view of Hakodate from the mountain top at night looks very pretty! I really like your channel because I can enjoy your vlogs from a vegetarian point of view! What are the major differences between Japanese and Indian curry? I am familiar with the Japanese one but not with Indian curry.
In smaller places like Hakodate it can be tricky for vegetarians! Japanese curry is like katsu curry - more like a gravy curry than Indian curry! But really all curries are delicious I think!! 😋
I love your snow boots! Where are they from? thanks for the video. My husband and I want to go to northern Japan next year.
Thanks! They're Rocket Dog Icee boots. Totally recommend north Japan - there's so much to see!
This is all Meiji Era town, my most favorite! (^_^) ... Russian sailors who died during the battle of Tsushima are buried here (please check out the Russian district!),... now that I think of it maybe the Meiji government thought ' plant them up North instead of where we live ' (?) ... the peninsula is not so old, it got kind of filled in between the (hopefully dormant) volcano and Hokkaido,... I just wish that this place wasn't so bear infested ...
How long ago did you shot this video? As far as I know...the snow festival is on January right? You should do live streaming 🙂
It's early February, for the snow festival. On my last two trips I intended to do some live streams and I'd like to, but I film so much for my videos and along with taking pictures, etc, live streaming always seems like one extra thing too much!
Wow that is a beautiful view, good thing you went I couldn’t take that cold. 😅 What’s the story of the anti-mascot: Chitaan?
I’m terrible with the cold too, but it was worth it for the experience! Ah Chitaan! An unofficial mascot - I don’t know if she/he’s created just to get publicity, but either way: super fun! I do like this trend for mischievous mascots like Melon Kim’s, Chitaan & Funassyi!
@@cakeswithfaces oohh are there more unofficial mascots like Chitaan? I will have to check that out. I love your videos of you exploring Japan, the food and the anime stuff in Akihabara. Do you see a lot of bonsai in Japan by the way? Looking out for your next video :)
@@aleemmohammed7794 Thanks! Have you seen Mondo Mascots on Twitter? Really great account with lots of fun character mascots! If you like bonsai, there's a bonsai museum in Saitama near Tokyo!
Your boots are adorable! Was that a ship's horn or the Ricola guy? :-)
Haha it could well have been him!!😝
Hello i m not very good with extreme cold weather so which month will be good to enjoy sapporo.
It'd be better to avoid the wintertime if you don't like the extreme cold! I think it's snowy from around November/December until March or even April. I'd love to go back in the warmer months and see the beautiful countryside in Hokkaido. I don't like the cold either, but it was an amazing experience to be there in the winter - I'd never seen so much snow, and it was definitely worth it!
@@cakeswithfaces thank you so much
OMG I LOVE SNOOOOOWWWWW :D
It’s so beautiful! And exciting for me as it hardly ever snows at home!
We do get snow in Denmark but not like wen I was a little Girl :(
7:33 "I'm pooping now (so don't disturb)."
Is that what it says?? 😂😂
@@cakeswithfaces There were three vertical wooden hanging tags and the center one says so. It's written in vertical that 只今うんこ中 which means "Now I'm/we are pooping."
@@mPDC-gh8jy Haha thank you, I wouldn't have guessed that! :-)
@@cakeswithfaces It's a joke tag/sign came from "We're open" sign in front of shops and you can hang it on the outside knob of your bedroom door all day (as a joke).

..all that snow reminded me of the film Kanseitou, i think the owners of Masala Curris might be into punk/ska i just saw NOFX (So Long and Thanks for all the Shoes) on the top of the shelf at the counter, a vinyl record maybe?
Yes you’re right! Obviously why it’s such a cool place! 😝
@@cakeswithfaces ..a cool place in all that snow..:-)
Long time no see Luka... 💗💗💗
I'm sorry my bad.. i didn't show up a few months ago...
Which month is this? It’s not June/July is it? Because I am going to Hakodate in January?
It’s early February at Sapporo Snow Festival time :-) so January might be quite similar! Lots of SNOW!
Hi, when did u go? 😊
