Dang that tone intro... Speechless.
Agreed
That one slayed me too!
I'm sorry, I feel stupid for asking this, but what song was he playing during the intro?

@@jimcarey670 Runaround - Van Halen
Pete, at this point you've seriously nailed every Van Halen tone perfectly.
Thanks!
Saw Van Halen in 91. He was playing that same guitar. Started with the drill.
It was a hell of a show.
Poundcake!
Toronto?
@reginaldbowls7180 Shreveport, Louisiana. Alice in Chains was the opening act. It was an interesting show. Grunge was just starting to get momentum.
Ayyyyy @@srogers500 318 !!!!!
I was SUPPOSED to see them in LA at the Forum. Took a week off work to stay with family there for the show. The week of the Rodney King riots. Still not over it....
Steve Lukather recommend Ernie Ball to Edward as his old guitar builder from Valley Arts Dudley Gimpel was working at Ernie Ball at that point
Mr lukather had a lot to do with this instrument, He also is the one that choose the pickup in the bridge! 😁
I do know that guitar's body shape was originally for Albert Lee's signature guitar but he felt it was too close to his tele's so he passed
on that one and went with that other Odd shape that is now the Albert lee EBMM and the name AXIS was what it was originally called when it was intended for Albert lee. IF you look closely at the head stock of the unpainted prototype Ed is playing it say's "AXIS" on the headstock,
The Ernie Ball factory has a white Axis prototype in their showroom with black hardware. It’s pre Eddie Van Halen. Black Floyd Rose and Axis on the headstock
Speaking of Luke, Luke bailed out from Valley Arts because VA was sold to a Korean company, Samick. Luke didn't like the quality of the guitars so he went to Music Man.
That and Kramer went bankrupt in 1991.
Dudley Gimpel was the man behind the body shape
Had every Guitarworld and Player from that era! I remember like it was yesterday. Learned soooo much from those mags.
Yup also getting those Carvin catalogs and building your dream guitar for fun. Ah miss those days
Me too
Oh yes.. I remember I had to wait an extra week for the mags to be shipped to Sweden and when it was Eddie or Vai on the cover it was like gold!
There were a few covers I really remember from then. One was Reb Beach with his wood stained Ibanez, the other was Michael Wilton and Chris DeGarmo from Queensryche, and I definitely remember this Eddie ad.
My heart melted when I heard you playing. It was like Eddie is back. I still have a big hollow spot since he left. Love this video. Thank you.
And somewhere Eddie is watching and grining. Well done. Very well done.
Blew my mind when he came up with his own design and it left the super strat shapes of the 80s behind.
And it’s still ugly.
@@Dr.Jekyll 😂
Nailing the tone! Fantastic work!
I think all of our minds were blown. EVH went from super Strats to super Teles. Most people, myself included, prefer the strat shape.
@sole__doubt I always thought it looks like a Les Paul and a Tele mixed together
If ever they decide to stage an EVH tribute concert, I vote for you and Wolfgang to share six string duties.
aw man, that would not be right without Eddie ... I am sure Alex would feel the same.
I mean Alex ended up being one of the greatest rock drummers the world has ever known, so it's like if he needs to make a buck, he doesn't have to rewind.
Wolfgang has said he won’t be a part of it because “I don’t want to play those songs without dad” was his reason
@@RulgertGhostalker to me it’s not about making a buck. All proceeds could go to whatever was Eddies favorite charity was. It just feels that, as a great musician (the greatest guitarist of all time imo), he never had a proper send off. I get Alex’s grief, and grieving never ends. I think that his book release, later this year, will help towards his healing. And yes, he was the greatest drummer. I just think all us fans, who also grieve his loss, need a tribute concert to the great man.
@@sloanfrederick3461 and then he went on to play them at the Taylor Hawkins tribute. Rather hypocritical wouldn’t you say?
@@jimmcdougall9973 I wouldn’t say that, it’s because he had a special connection with van halen not as much the foo fighters
*Came for the **_EVH Kramer/MusicMan_** story..., got an origin backstory of the **_Air Norton & Tone Zone,_** my two favorite **_DiMarzios!_** I first heard about em' from Petrucci using them in his **_Ibanez USA Customs_** on the **_Images and Words_** album, before he went to a **_Steve's Special_** at the bridge for **_Awake._** I had no idea that they were basically the two "extremely close 2nd place runners up" in Eddie's R&D pickup shootout elimination in choosing his custom production models for his EBMM instruments. Very cool!*
🤘😎👍
Tone Zones are really versatile, never tried an Air Zone. Im using Steve's Specials these days. Always been a Dimarzio guy.
I love my Steve's Special! I swapped in a roughcast A5 mag and its even better at the "hyper vintage" sound.
Remember shop class in high school? In my class at least 4 of us built electrict strat style guitars and bought replacement necks and all the other stuff "mail order" (remember that!?). Band saws, routers, switches and wire and your off and running! Everybody was doing it in the early 70s. It was very inspiring!
I made a Telecaster in shop class. I wanted ash, the teacher told me a few days later that he couldn't get a hold of any ash & I'd have to take maple. BIG mistake. Maple is very hard and heavy. It was a pain!
That intro was truly impressive. So awesome.
Saw this non-rock’n’roll looking guitar and was shaking my head saying Eddie what were you thinking. It took me like 15 seconds to accept and fall in love with this unpretentious beauty. It sounds and plays well, too. Very well.
Starting to get the feeling Ed was a bit difficult to work with
Certainly worth the wait, Pete. Well put together video, great playing and some lovely tones. The guitar is definitely in a much better place.
Hi Simon! Glad you enjoyed it! Hope you are well
@@PeteThorn Yes thanks, Pete. As the Van Halen song goes I'm on Top of The World. :)
Fun little EBMM EVH guitar fact, The guitar's body shape was originally for Albert Lee's signature guitar but he felt it was too close to his tele's so he passed

Reply
I don’t think it was the body shape it was the head stock you are talking about
@@humanactivated1017 The headstock is the same on all EB/MM guitars, it's their trademark.
@@MK-1010well it was originally from OLP before Ernie Ball got it.
@@n34z3r You got it backwards. Do you know what OLP means?
@@MK-1010 it is OLP not OPL. I did mix up the letters.
Just wanted to say that your VH covers are the best I've ever heard. There was a SWING in Eddie's playing. I don't know how else to describe it. You have that same swing. Also on a side note, I recently saw a video of you performing "I'm The One" with The Classic Rock Show, and you reached for your whammy bar....... and didn't have one. That must have been a moment of sheer terror. Still pulled it off like a pro. Got my tickets for the upcoming Hershey, PA show.
I was not happy in that moment haha! But you can grab a floyd behind the fine tuners and work it that way, so that's what I did haha!
Because he was a legit songwriter with great ideas
@@PeteThornA true pro
That is a beautiful Music Man and a great video as always Pete.
As always, you nailed the guitar parts, but you also really captured the tone perfectly. I’ve been following you for years and truly enjoy what you do!
What a great video Pete. Still have chills. Man I love the stuff with a story behind it. Especially when Eddie is involved. Nice Run A Round. Spot on.
Great video Pete! It blew my mind when Ed showed up with that guitar. I’m 59 so I remember it all like yesterday. They play so dang great. I never could afford one. Keep the content coming!!
I have an original 1991 purple EBMM that I adore. I still recall the day I brought her home. My most prized possession. Great job Pete!
I love the backstory behind how this guitar found its way to you Pete..and can't think of a more-deserving recipient/guardian! I'm sure it will bring immense joy to Simon to see you using it moving forward. I've always thought that the EVHMM was by far the best EVH signature guitar...it's so great to hear you playing it!
It was great for me to be able to hand pick it's new owner. Pete is certainly the most worthy and appropriate recipient.
@@simonlegg3174 you’re a good man! I flew from Australia to London in February and caught The Classic Rock Show at Cadogan Hall. Pete played “I’m The One” on his Frankenstrat…I can’t wait to see which VH tune he’ll play using your guitar!
@@rselp When I met Pete and gave him the guitar he actually played three songs with it that night, including Jump. Since then he has mentioned using it again but is a bit nervous about taking it on tour because it is in such good condition. "I'm The One" was brilliant but check out Hot For Teacher by the CRS in 2022 on UA-cam if you haven't already seen it. Fantastic version.
I was 16 when that ad came out. I didn't play guitar but my best friends were in a band so I spent countless hours baked in the jam barn reading those mags you mentioned. Cheers from Canada, great video
That is soooooo SWEET! Great Video Pete! Eddie Van Halen still blows my mind in the inventions he created from his mind. GENUIS! CHEERS PETE! 🤘🤘👍
That was such a HUGE deal when it happened. Always associated that guitar and the SLO. Album came out during beach week right after my senior year of high school... the neck pickup, the wah... it was such a big deal.
I remember when it came out, I was a kid in high school, and wanted one so bad. I ended up getting a couple Wolfgangs when I got older, and could afford them. Eventually I bought an Axis in the same color as the one in the video, new in 2003. I bought another in 2007, in tobacco sunburst. I will never let them go. While not exactly the same as Ed's version, they are close enough for me and I love them. Great video Pete, brought back a ton of memories from when I was a kid.
Always a joy watching your videos Pete, even this too! Cheers from Italy.
Golden history lesson, this is some new content I haven't seen anywhere! Great video! Also, that intro was totally insane!!!
Dude, not just the playing, but the work in the production is so impressive! The depth of research and emotion and storytelling is so great! Thanks for this, Pete!
Thanks!
Glad you could get your hands on one, you deserve it! Thanks for sharing.
Yeah his playing in the opening proved that!🤘
“Partsocaster” love it. Phenomenal playing, as always, Pete.
When you started to play I started to dance like band members in video for that great song.Thank you for magic you put out every single time.
Great great story Pete! Hats off to Simon as well. What a nice guy - I truly appreciated his story and as you said, it was nice to hear him explaining how he acquired that awesome guitar. With you playing, the tone, the vibe and sound was all there! It was great to see both you lads, huge unabashed EVH fans coming together through this instrument and your appreciation for Ed and his music. Good on ya both. Cheers!
Thanks for your kind words. It's nice for me to know the guitar is now in such a great pair of hands.
Hey my friend i wish you could do an updated video on on how to play Eruption thanks
Peters original videos on Eruption are the best.
@andyracksthecams oh yes would love to see him do a updated version on his music man
@@donaldyoung9838but it'd be the wrong guitar. The Frankenstrat "is" the Eruption guitar?
@andyracksthecams oh yes your so right I have the evh 78 eruption guitar an the evh Frankie an the evh bumble bee with a 84 reissue 84 banana neck love them all
Hey Pete, wow that sounded so cool!
I have watched it 50 times. The sound is spot on brother!!
Love from Australia 🇦🇺
Very cool video and story to go along with the guitar. That guitar has been exceptionally well taken care of for its age! Great video as always Pete!!!
Hey Mr Thorn awesome videos an your definitely an amazing guitar player
@PETE THORN, So happy for you pete that you found one not only in trans amber but in such mint like new shape!😱 It is like the universe said
lets give him a second chance at owning one! 😁 Like yourself i was not able to get one back when they first came out and later really regretted it.
I did get a AXIS in trans red like he played in "Judgement day" on RHRN live. I love it! everything about the guitar is great to me.
BTW, your' opening playing and tone sounded EXACTLY like EVH! 😱
Excellent documentation Pete!
Another fantastic installment Pete. Thank you!
FWIW, I discovered MM guitars late in my playing life after being a Fender, Ibanez, PRS player, but I never forgot about the neck of a Sterling MM (forget what model) that I grabbed just as they were about to close for the day. I finally just went ahead and ordered a Silhouette Special, and then in quick succession, an Albert Lee HH with all-rosewood neck, and then a Luke III, also with an all RW neck. Man oh man, if only all my guitars could have those necks. "Sumptuous" is how I can best describe all of them. Phenomenal brand.
Awesome guitar Pete! I have a 92 that I have used since then. Mines beat up LOL!
Same! My Dad told me if I could get straight A’s in high school I could get any guitar I wanted. GC didn’t have a purple so they loaned a pink one for three weeks until the purple arrived. Kinda wish now I’d kept the pink 😮
Interesting bit of trivia for you Pete...he recorded the rhythm for Runaround on a tele fender sent him. That's why it sounds so single coily on the recording. The solo, of course...was his Music Man.
Could definitely hear that and that makes sense!
I’m at 1:48 and absolutely blown away at how perfectly you nailed Runaround! Also what a freaking phenomenal string of riffs and licks Eddie carved out for that tune. God! I’ve never heard it soloed and it amazes me how he still completely blows me away with his stuff as I hear it all over again from a new perspective. Ok now I’ll watch the rest of the video 😁.
Fantastic video Pete!
As always, thank you for sharing your talent with us and inspiring us!
Pete's EBMM EVH guitar is just the best.
Got one too, tremendous piece of kit.
It’s hard for me to watch this without getting a knot in my stomach. He died way to young. You better never die Jimmy Page or I’m completely gonna lose it.
And a lump in my throat.
Pete, playing absolutely on point in this video.
Also, the pure nostalgia of seeing the EVH Music Man in "Guitar Techniques" magazine.
Thank you,
Such a great story Pete. ❤ Great playing once again man. Cheers from Melbourne Oz.
I love those Seymour Duncan Custom Customs (SH-11s). At the recommendation of my FLGS, I dropped a set into a ‘96 MIJ Jackson Dinky (DKMG), alder back, maple top, bolt-on neck I found on eBay. Left everything else stock. THE funnest guitar I’ve ever played. I put it over my knee unplugged (It showed in in tune and set up decently out of the box), and it sounded great. Plugged it in, and with the stock pickups, it sounded like an electric razor. Ergo, the pickup swap. My FLGS knows my gear, and what I like, and made the perfect recommendation based on knowing me for so long.
Hi Pete - just a note on "3-axis CNC"; I've been a luthier for thirty years, and work in design for marine and associated things that use CNC. A 3-axis CNC is pretty much any basic CNC. Left-right, forward-backward are two of those axes (like an Etch-A-Sketch) and the third being up-down. At least in this context. Even though CNC was fairly new to production at the time (don't get me talking about Matsumoku, etc!) the real trick here was copying an existing part and using that as the basis for a programme that would move the CNC when making copies. Coordinate measuring (CMM) just didn't exist outside of super expensive industry, military, scientific, etc. which is how you take samples from an object for developing a model. The history of this small point would be an interesting video in itself, albeit for CNC dorks like me. It makes modern structured laser light scanning of objects and 5-axis CNC (which is in my game) truly space age by comparison. A lot of manufacturers were still relying on ganged copy carvers back then, which were literally a row of machines cutting parts with the positions all being guided by a pilot semi-automatically over an origin template. I imagine that this would have needed some proper programming gymnastics by the CNC coders of the time, since programs were still fundamentally developed by hand coding. Crazy stuff man. Also, that "gun stock oil" would have been Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil or similar. It's great for raw necks.
Amazing intro (of course) I do remember that advertisement. Bravo Simon. What an awesome video !!! One for the fans indeed. The For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge album was an amazing piece of artistry and work in motion. The depth of knowledge and perspectives you share are always enjoyable.
That was great, Pete. Described it perfectly. That magazine ad was a total shocker. Seems funny now to think it was such big news but it was, such was the impact of the man. Thanks.
Stellar playing (as always) and really beautiful closing thoughts. Makes the world go round indeed!
Thanks for sharing your guitar with the world, Simon!! Pete - spot-on with capturing Ed's spirit in your playing! As Ed said in the past: "You do a good me!"
This is a fantastic piece of media: great playing, great investigation into the EVH EBMM, great human interest story. Really top notch, man.
I love your video and the story behind it. Great as always, thanks, Pete! 🤘🤘
Great Playing and cool story. Played one in 1992 or so and was blown away, Played a Washburn N4 around the same time and both guitars were out of reach money wise but never will I forget the feeling. Thanks Pete!
Dude, your tone is always so on point.
Great story!
Pete, you're a monster player. That riffage in the intro was mind blowing. Thanks sir
Haven't heard that intro VH song in a long time. Brings back great memories! Thanks for the video.
Superb guitar. Awesome tone and playing, as always, from PT.
I was about to skip this video in my feed. But I'm genuinely happy I did Not! The intro playing man! Puts a big Eddie like smile on my face ❤️🙏🏻🙌🏻🔮
Man that ROCKED! Sweet tone and flawless riffs. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you kindly!
This was a great video, Pete!
Love hearing you Jam! Awesome 😎 Dude!!
Remember seeing that guitar back in '91 and drooling over it ever since. Never able to afford an original, but built my own 'parts-axis' just for giggles. Great video.
Great story, Pete. I remember, like yesterday, when that guitar debuted. So unique, like Eddie himself. I have one on the way this spring.
The EBMM EVH is such a fine guitar. The Gotoh Floyd is so smooth. The custom Dimarzios are perfectly tuned. The woodcraft and attention to detail is second to none. There's nothing else like it. It's a perfect guitar. I've dreamt for one since I was a kid. I had an Axis Tribute model for a while and it just didn't feel right. Getting an original EVH will have to remain a dream.
Your EVH is in incredible shape and so clean. You even have the original offset saddles. Incredible tone Pete and insane playing as usual. Thanks for telling this story and sharing the video.
I was surfing UA-cam and this popped up. I loved it..really cool, man.
EPIC video! I really enjoyed watching this. Great job PT
Thanks!
Take a shot every time Pete says ‘evidently’ lol. Love you Pete, keep rocking!!!
Congrats on getting such a cool guitar, and to Simon for getting it into someone's hands who can do it justice. Interesting story. It's great when the guitar community works like this. 👍😎
Pete is a BEAST! Great video on the history and build of this guitar.
I loved what you said at the end - I connect with this era on a deep level. That iconic Music Man ad that you show here represents the very beginning of my guitar journey, when I started playing 30+ years ago. I didn't ever own of these guitars, but what that ad represents for my life journey learning guitar through magazines like you said, and seeing this ad constantly... it's hugely important to me. It was hanging up in my room, and the '91 Van Halen show (Milwaukee WI) was my first major concert I attended. Aside from the nostalgia of this ad, was the radio ad for the concerts ... saying "other shows sold out in 6 minutes" ... Well sheesh, I wasn't going to miss out!
My aunt told me, for when tickets went on sale via phone - "Don't call the Ticketron in your city, call the # for a different city's Ticketron, so you will be able get through!"... and I did. Unforgettable. I bought the $35 (back then) tie dyed VH logo Tshirt and went to the show with my best friend, just at the start of my sophomore year of high school. Just perfect. I would love to play one of these guitars someday. Your intro really grabbed me too, thanks for all your work on this video!
Excellent playing, put an instant Eddie smile on my face.
Sounds killer Pete. What a gift to the guitar loving world, and I mean you. So chill yet talented, thanks
Thank you!
I also remember seeing that ad in GFTPM in 90 or 91 - it was so influential on the young me. They got a purple one in a local guitar shop in Newcastle and I would go and stare at it every week but it was way out of my reach. 35 years later I still dream of getting one. Maybe now is the right time, thanks for the video - great as always!
Great Ep! Great info! 🤘👽🎸
You have an amazing recorded guitar sound. I remember that EVH Story. That's when I become a Music Man fan.
Excellent intro Pete, awesome job
Thanks for the awesome videos, Pete!
Jawdropping intro! Always loved that guitar. Great video.
That playing at the beginning sounds just like Eddie came back to life. Very awesome job sir! As far as guitars, I can't help it, I'm a huge Kramer fan. I've just always loved Kramer guitars. From Eddie, to Mick Mars.
Great video, Pete! Love and miss Eddie every day!👍
WOW Pete, your videos are always awesome and jewels for us EVH fans out there, like myself! Of course the "wow factor" is not limited to your EVH related videos .... Anyways, thank you so much for all the information, the fantastic guitar playing and the amazing TONE !! By the way, I also love the SUHR PT PUs I put in some of my guitars. Cheers & Greeting from Germany
Amazing playing as usual Pete 😮 👌👌
This is why I LOVE electric guitars! Thanks Pete!
Hallo, I saw you at the Guitar summit 2022 in Mannheim germany, really liked your workshop then , thank you for this

Another great video, Pete! And you are ripping it up, as always!
Thanks for the wonderful history lesson and perspective.
I remember where I was, who I was with and what I was doing when a friend turned me on to VH the summer of 1978. “Running with devil” if you’re wondering. They changed rock and roll for ever. What EVH could do with a guitar was intimidating for this young music lover and budding musician. What Angus Young was doing at the time actually changed ME.
That tone is insane! Great guitar and player too
Great video Pete! Your content is a such a gift for us Ed-heads!

Absolutely killer playing!
Hell yeah Pete!! Man I got a lil choked up you're nailing his tone so great... AMERICAN HISTORY! Ruling...-Scott
I didn't know you can improve already perfect Eddie's tone. But Pete, you did it! What an intro. I am listening on crappy headphones and it sounds great. I have been following another YT channels lately so I commpletely forgot who is the master when it comes to guitar tone.
