Bill Hader Breaks Down Making Barry Season 3, Why he Loves Children of Men & What Makes a Great Oner

- With Barry Season 3 starting this Sunday night on HBO, I recently conducted an extended interview with Bill Hader, where he broke down the making of the series and revealed what goes on behind-the-scenes to bring one of the best shows on television to life. During the wide-raging conversation, Hader revealed how they write Barry, why Season 3 jumps ahead six months, how they balance the drama and comedy, what the new season is about, why eighth-of-a-page scenes kill you, why Barry is the toughest to write for, what it was like for him to film really motional scenes as Barry while also directing the episode, how they filmed the incredible oner in the first episode of Season 3, and how he worked with Carl Herse (his director of photography) to have the light reflect Barry’s mood. He also talked about his love of Goodfellas, Children of Men, Spinal Tap, how the show changed in the editing room, and so much more I could never list it all here.
I got to watch the first four episodes of Barry Season 3 before talking to Hader and they’re brilliant. Once again, Hader, Alec Berg, and everyone that works on the show have crafted a season that mixes the drama, comedy, and fantastic filmmaking to create one of the best shows airing on any channel. In addition, Season 3 is a real departure from the first two seasons because Gene Cousineau’s (Henry Winkler) acting class has closed, which leads to a completely new structure for the series. Trust me, if you’re a fan of Barry, you’re going to love the new season. For more on Barry Season 3 you can read our review. Barry also stars Stephen Root, Sarah Goldberg, Anthony Carrigan, Sarah Burns, D’Arcy Carden, and Michael Irby.
Since I know some of you like watching video, while others prefer reading the text, I’m offering the Bill Hader interview two ways: you can either watch it in the player above or read the conversation below.
Again, Barry Season 3 starts this Sunday night so set your DVR.

my favorite kind of celebrity interview is the COVID-era ones where every famous person looks like they just rolled out of bed and haven't showered
Bill is all of us rolling out of bed at the last second to jump on a zoom meeting.
About five minutes in I noticed he was saying "you know" a lot so I restarted and counted every time he said it and it came to a total of 183 times :)
Once you hear it, you can’t un-hear it. 😂
This is one of the saddest things I’ve ever heard
Holllly moly! That's crazy how many times he says that, _you know?_ ... 😏😎🤭 Lolol sorry I had to!! But ty for that great observation 🙌🏻👍🏻👏🏻
What a sad life you must live.
Different strokes I guess
Love hearing Bill talk about his processes and couldn't be happier to see such a deserving person making his dreams come true! He's one of my favorite people in the world!
Take a shot everytime Bill says "you know"
He sounds high 💀
Also everytime he says "yeah, no". 😆♥️
You will get alcohol poisoning by the end of the interview.
I wish I didn’t see this comment before finishing the vid, you know
Tried now I'm in the e.r with liver failure.
He lookis like he just woke up.
He's so weirdly endlessly relatable.
What I love so much about Bill is he’s never in a rush in these interviews and I love that Steven is such a great interviewer that he just lets him go. Thanks for this, so looking forward to Season 3
Yeah, so many interviewers ramble and constantly interrupt - so refreshing and great here
holy a 1 hour interview with bill
I have been blessed
Listening to Bill talk about his work is my favourite thing. Season 3 sounds so intense and it's so great hearing about how this intensity is being crafted, narratively and visually. I have no idea what to expect except a good amount of tachycardia lmao
Yeah Hader, we can tell your not sleeping. I'm thankful for your lack of sleep for my entertainment. I really love Barry.
The interviewer seems really nice, but I find the parts where Bill is cracking up and the interviewer is just completely silent hilarious
The interviewer is such a nice, knowledgeable guy. He's previously professed to Bill how much he loves Barry. So I think he might be a little starstruck, and paying a lot of attention to his reactions so he's not inadvertently fanboying. No shade meant. I think a lot of Bill fans would feel the same way!
@@samanthamaynard4447 no totally! He did an excellent job and had such great questions!
I liked him on Mythbusters better.
Barry hits all the taste clusters.
Bill really just loves the craft. You can see it, he so genuinely lives for it. More Barry please!?
Children Of Men is fucking amazing, listen to these two and watch it right now if you haven't yet for some reason.
It's interesting to hear him talk about Barry not having anything to do because the idea that he has nothing else going on *is* his story. The way he moves through life is similar to how he behaved in the second season, when he killed tons of people in search of Fuches. He's methodical and has his eyes on one goal. Meanwhile, there's chaos being left in his wake. Seeing more of those waves of chaos affect people in season three was so satisfying. Cannot wait for season four!
he's also so much more into making the show than being IN it
he’s right, choosing a favorite Coen Brothers movie is like choosing a favorite child for me it’s impossible… but i saw O Brother Where Art Thou? first and it holds such a special place in my heart
Same here. The music in that movie is so damn good. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs feels like a spiritual successor to that movie
@@macstrong1284 It's hard for me to, but not impossible. If I had to pick my favorite I would say Miller's Crossing. With Raising Arizona being a close second.
No Country for me. But I find I watch Burn After Reading every few months.
One of my favorite shows on television
"you're gonna be wrong. be wrong fast"
how could you not like Bill Hader.... damn
Bill reminds me of a blending of great talent from Mel Brooks and Alfred Hitchcock.
He is so dynamic in his abilities; for instance in season 3 episode 2 of Barry, the main character explodes verbally at his leading lady.
That expression of emotion is not "per say"
hard to do, but the emotional build up in the character (like a beautiful ford GT going from 30 to 215 in a hair of a second) is hard to express.
seeing bill portray a man with severe ptsd created by the death of his old marine friend: by his own hand no less, was superbly performed.
The leading lady should receive awards for her portrayal. She is a wonderful talent.
I honestly don't think I've ever been this hyped for a show ever and I've seen all the hugely popular shows like GOT. Can't wait to see season 3 next week.
Children of Men and Pan's Labyrinth both came out on 2006. I remember being completely blown away when I watched both of them in the theater
Good year for movies
@@alejandrocastillo9209 Yeah also cars
@@underclvss Yeah Cars is a good movie but why are you mentioning it here? These two movies show insane filmmaking prowess behind the camera. Cars is just a good kids movie. They do not belong in the same conversation.
@@Largentina. let him be silly he matters too
I love how all filmmakers think somewhat alike.
this was an awesome interview, great questions!
When they took the acting class out of season 3 it made the show take to a new equation. Before it was "hitman goes to acting class". But in season 3 it becomes "S1: Barry needs Fuches in order to get by but it is not working so now he is starting to defect to Mr. Cousineau. S2: Barry needs Mr. Cousineau to get by, but it is starting to get complecated so he is starting to defect back to Fuches. S3: Barry has nobody but himself and it's definitely not working and now he is imploding.:
very interesting show, cant wait for season 3
Brilliant interview.
Goodfellas was the first Scorsese movie I watched- on TV lol. And it's still the greatest movie experience I've had.
I like how Hader mentions that, as writers, they try their best to give even the extras something to work with. And it's true! There will be moments when even side characters steal the show, like the lesbian couple with too many dogs, and that's partly due to the writing being so good.
If they have dialogue, they're not extras
Collider has long provided the best coverage of Barry - will you be doing bts pieces again with Bill for each episode? Those were great!
“You know?” You, know!
“You know.”
Looking forward to season 3
you know count : 1,067
ily bill
I was wondering about that.
Love Hader. Argument could be made he's the best ever on SNL
@@RandoLePerson yeah, throw in Armisen, Wiig, Strong, Kenan Thompson, Sudeikis, Chris Parnell, Norm, Kate McKinnon, freakin Dan Aykroyd... there's stiff competition
I love this man
AWWE I haven’t seen him in so long :,) love u bill
It's interestingly funny and sinister show at the same time
Now I know.
Thank you.
Someone tell Bill about the Rutles! If he loves Monty Python and Spinal Tap, that's a great entry to the mockumentary canon :)
If hbo doesn't greenlight more seasons of Barry I will take my own life this is not hyperbole I love Barry
Hader is such a nice person
Big Cohen Brothers fan. "Raising Arizona" does it for me. :-D
Being on the red carpet of a movie you've been cut out of is something Manny Jacinto probably recently experienced. I went to see Maverick BECAUSE Manny was "in it," and then he's SO not in it. He's basically an extra in it.
a lot of ppl are talking abt how bad this interview is but it doesn’t seem bad at all
bill hader
Cool
I love season 3 Barry, I think thus far very best showing Barry's PTSD coming to terms. At least it wasn't after battle of winterfell. I would def stay up for Barry after house of the dragon though too.
Lol boy my tummy it hurts
Bill "ya know" Hader < 3
bill hader is a really cool guy you know
I Truly do Love Bill Hader and Barry but "You Know!"
He's the only "you know" abuser that I have total tolerance for. I'll put up with a lot of YK just to hear him talk.
Bill get some sun dude!! 😄😉❤
Drinking game: drink whenever Bill says "You know".
(Spoil alert: you might get drunk by the end of the interview).
Would someone please tell me which CO movie he spoke of after children of men, @48:18, please? Thanks!
He's referencing, Y tu mamá también, another film by Alfonso Cuaron, the director of Children of Men.
@@cafsfo Thanks very much! Y su papa y su abuela. lol
he says you know, in every fucking sentence
Why does the interviewer remind me of Adam savage from myth busters
Bill you're slowly becoming a character.... ya know....
That title was looking real sus for a second
Now I want to know what scene made the guy have a panic attack. I had one two weeks ago and would just like to know if it's past hahaha
“DO YOU LOVE MY DAUGHTER?” or the camera staying on NoHo Hank as his best friends are being ripped apart by some unseen creature or when Sally looks like she’s about to get strangled to death or when Barry is about to be executed by Albert and starts breaking down on the ground while screaming like a banshee
I'm guessing the strangulation scene.
So some people get 4 of the episodes for free. I wish I was a reviewer.
Bill "Y'know" Hader
Do these guys say "you know" a lot?
You know I think they do, you know.
Use me as a button for “manifesting an Oscar for Bill” (for either directing or acting) I can totally see it happening. Or at least nominations. Hit me up in 5 years
Totally agree. He's destined for an illustrious career as a filmmaker. His choices and confidence are a force of nature
When does he bring up Children of Men?
47 minutes in.
Yes, it's clear Barry doesn't get that there are consequences for his actions. His search for redemption is futile if he doesn't face that there are consequences-like losing Cousineau as an allie.
He also is misguided in thinking it's about changing his nature. I think being a murderer is his training and conditioning, not his nature.
Drink every time they say “One-er”
"You know" i can take a shot every time they say "you know" and you know i think i will be dead
..... you know
Have really enjoyed watching him go from his early days on SNL, supporting roles in Superbad and Hot Rod, had been my favorite cast member a long time before Stefan. Now fast forward to Barry and he's writing directing and starring in one of the only TV shows I watch. I didn't particularly like the whole storytelling with the young actress coming off a bit too woke or whiny and focusing on this very ancillary to the main story character having not only such an impact but spending a lot of possibly unnecessary scenes getting to something that could have happened without that character completely. Maybe it was the choices of the young actor i didn't enjoy as much and maybe felt like it stood out in a show that can get serious but didn't think it needed to take itself that seriously.
Bill is so sexy and handsome lol.
DILFISM
He’s daddy
Not tweedy daddy, or broadcast daddy.....maybe actor/ director/ impressionist daddy.
No offense to bill but he sounds like he was definitely toked up for this interview 💀
You aren't familiar with exhaustion from ongoing hard work, with little time to sleep? People on dope are dopey, not articulately answering questions intelligently, relevantlly with memory inact, as Biĺl is, in this interview.
@@daniellamcgee4251 it’s a joke.
@@daniellamcgee4251 Reinforcing negative stereotypes doesn't make for a good argument. Many weed smokers are well spoken, and intelligent.
@@Guerrilla_Grodd I think I see your point. I agree that many weed smokers are articulate and intelligent, but the chemical effects of weed dulls brain function, more than people who smoke are aware. Long term studies have now confirmed that regular weed smoking can also result in permanent brain damage to the executive function area of the brain which effects memory, planning, and organizational skills, etc. In adolescents, with heavy weed smoking, the natural development of this part of the brain to develop is usually inhibited.
Marijuana use also reduces the response of the reward centres of the brain, which is why it is common for people to lose motivation, as they aren't getting the usual pleasure from doing things. With the natural bio-chemical reward system dulled with weed, pre-existing depression and anxiety can be increased.
People with Marijuana-Use Disorder. (almost daily use, and unmotivated), can lose jobs, relationships, etc. Their lives can be effected in the same way untreated depression can. Also, heavy weed smoking can cause anxiety and depression, and psychotic disorders. A very small percentage of people have the gene for schizophrenia that is triggered by heavy marijuana. This happened to a close family member of mine, and a friend. I know of 3 others with diagnosed marijuana triggered schizophrenia. I have witnessed the damage of heavy weed smoking. No one knows if they have that gene until it's too late.
I am actually trying to counteract the reputation that marijuana is harmless. Most people don't know the risks, and that marijuana is 4x stronger now than in the 1960s.
As you know, 'dope' is also an adjective for something very positive. I am not discriminating against the people who use marijuana. Many are also creative and sensitive people who are self- medicating because they don't have other tools that are effective enough in the immediate, to get through life. They usually have emotions, or thoughts, they are trying to numb, or escape from. I have compassion and understanding because I have been through a lot myself. But recreational marijuana itself deserves to have a negative reputation. Intelligent people actively reducing their intelligence is tragic. And the problem with slow brain damage from weed smoking is that they aren't aware of it, so they are less willing to make changes in their best interest.
Bill looks so exhausted, it's really painful to watch, honestly. I feel him on the deepest level possible, it's just horrible. And the questions were very bright but I don't think the interviewer realized that he's allowed to laugh too. It's not an FBI recruitment interview it's a conversation with an artist. Maybe Bill would've opened up if the interviewer was more accessible, it's pretty unpleasant to watch someone cutting off another person's laugh or stream of thoughts to 'get things done.' Too bad. You had something truly beautiful in your hands.
Of course he's exhausted lol. Junkets suck, but this interviewer asked incredibly thoughtful and insightful questions and Bill was clearly grateful for that
Love BARRY, love Bill, but after hearing 4,000 "you know"s in the first 3 minutes, I couldn't listen to this interview any more...
I bet that Sally’s story is going to revealed as a lie. She was never abused, but by the time Barry learns that he already killed Sam and completely breaks down.
Lol. Nah cause we’ve seen him being menacing and abusive?
@@recessinthering8425 Not to mention, her behavior of trying to make a perfect dinner and get a gift for Barry after he screamed at her in the last episode is almost certainly a trauma response built up from years of an abusive marriage.
Oh wow, I'm surprised this interviewer is still working. Bad insight, questions and quips.
Season 3 was awful compared to the first 2. Full of waaaaaahmen issues bs.
@@Whimzico you're all over the place with that one sir.
