  • Camping gas cartridges, adapters, cheaper alternatives and refilling. All adapters and the G-works Gas saver are available on ebay
    www.ebay.co.uk/itm/G-WORKS-CAR...
    recommended filling ratio for cartridges is 80-85% all measurements done by weight ie empty cartridge + weight of gas = total gross weight filled, if exceeded reconnect the filling adapter, invert the filled cylinder and drain some back out again till you get the correct full weight..

    If there was an award for best all round video on youtube my vote would go here - straight to the point, clear, concise and understandable. I'm just about to buy my first stove for car camping and this is the "haynes manual" in video form for adaptors and how to save money on fuel. Top quality mate thanks very much.

    When doing the refill, it's helpful to prechill the receiving cannister in the freezer first, and take the donor can from some warm water. If you want 100% fill, you may have to do this twice, but in that case prudent to use a digital scale to make sure you don't overfill, especially if the receiving cannister does not have a blow off valve.

    The cartridges from garden centres that are used for weed flame guns have a standard screw fitting have 300 plus gms of gas for the same price as a canister but most importantly is iso/butane mix exactly the same as camping cartridges so will work in the winter.

    I really wish I had come across your video before making my portable mini stove purchase. I didn't know I required to make additional purchases of adapters just to interchange fuel sources between propane or butane canisters and cans. I honestly thought they were all the same universal size one sizedoes all screw on nozzle.
    My intended purpose was to use the same kind of mini stove in your demonstration but with the regular 1lbs green colored Coleman propane fuel bottles that are readily available throughout the States in major retail stores and even small mom and pop hardware stores.

      I understand that there is an adapter available that allows you to connect the large lefthand threaded Propane gas bottles to the smaller US style Coleman cylinders that allows you to decant into them, check on ebay for a supplier

    yea those can adapter are only for stoves that have liquid feeding mode or a pre heater tubes, it can become dangerous because those cans can feed liquid butane if not taken care properly.and you dont want a fireball stove.

    I've experienced when filling small containers from larger ones, that the small ones fill more when put in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. Temperature differential i think.
    I just received a #2 ("tripod") adapter from China, and the small tang was slightly bent, making it hard to attach the can to the adapter. We'll see what the seller says/does to remedy. Also, the can lifted the adapter off two legs, making it quite unstable. Did you have the same issue?

  • @MountainParameters
    @MountainParameters 9 років тому +1

    Comprehensive coverage of the adapters, well done. My one concern arose at the 2 minute mark. It did not appear as though that stove has a preheat tube, and the fuel canister position indicates it will liquid feed that stove if it is more than 1/3 full because it is laying on its side. That could result in a flame out on the stove, shouldn't that canister always be in the upright position unless you intend to liquid feed a winter mix blend via an inverted canister that is feeding a stove with preheat tubes?

    • @WillEDC
      @WillEDC 5 років тому

      Mountain Parameters you are correct. I believe if you have the “correct” side up it’ll be ok even with a full cartridge. All those steamboat burners have a side mount.

    You forgot the adapter that lets you screw any lindel thread burner onto any standard 1lb LP torch cylinder. Its way cheaper to run at $3-$4 a pound vs $7-$12 and straight LP will run at way lower temperatures then butane.

    lots of info there and works for a couple of my thermacell repellents, but not my thermacell lantern and portable one for my belt, they use the thermacell and conaire plastic butane cartridges, is it possible to find an adapter that will allow the camp stove iso butane canisters to fit where the plastic cartridge does, preferably with the hose you show on here.

    2:14 i get 3 foot orange flames using those with an adaptor , anybody any idea why ?
    is it because it has to be on its side ? air not gas getting in because side on ?

    • @robstone9146
      @robstone9146 7 років тому

      it's because you re burning liquid 'fuel' . If it stands upright then gas comes off the top, lay it down and you often gte liquid. Many burners have preheaters to make sure that you are burning gas, always stand the cartrisge up

    • @psa4843
      @psa4843 5 років тому +1

      2 years late but anyway my understanding is that those canisters have a L shaped plastic tube in them. If placed horizontal the notch has to be pointing up for the tube to feed gas, not liquid.

    • @totenvt
      @totenvt  10 років тому

      Björn Mundt I am not aware of a adapter to convert a propane cylinder to refill the small butane/propane mix cartridges. It would be possible to make one but would require brazing equipment and the brass fittings from a propane regulator along with a pigtail adapter to take a flexipipe.

    the only gas canisters that I have seen for sale in my country (Cyprus) are the Camping Gaz ones where you push the canister onto the stove and the stove actually pierces the canister (meaning that you cant remove canister until it is empty). Are there any adapters (preferably with a valve on them) to enable you to fix a Camping Gaz piercable canister such as the one described to a remote stove like an MSR Wind Pro II? Basically I want to buy a remote stove but I am not sure that i will be able to get gas canisters for it in my country. Any tips would be appreciated!!! Liked the video by the way!

    • @totenvt
      @totenvt  10 років тому +1

      I dont believe anyone makes an adapter to adapt a pierceable cartridge to screw fit remote burner. This is the main reason that the screw fit type came about because once fitted the canister could not be removed. Check with your local DIY shops to see if they stock the screw fit plumbers blow lamp cartridges in the plumbing section, if they do it will give you the opportunity to purchase a remote type burner for those as described in the video.
